The War Of The Worlds Continues - On The Moon And Mars! Time is running out for planet Earth. Marseria, the insidious Martian plague, has been infecting our world for over twenty years and has resisted every human effort to eradicate it.  With all life on Earth facing extinction, the only solution left is to directly access a specific piece of Martian technology. But, according to diaries left behind by Ogilvy the astronomer, the Martians have hidden it at the lake on the moon.  In 1945, three rockets converted from Martian cylinders take off on the vital lunar mission, and amongst the crew is Ogilvy's nephew, Jack Stent.  Will the astronauts locate the shadow-weapon, thought to hold the desperately needed cure for Marseria? Can it really be used to instigate another timeline on Earth so that mankind can survive? The stakes are high and so is the risk of contact and conflict with Martians.  Nearly two hundred years later, at a scientific colony on Mars, a shocking discovery is made about Jack Stent, and Ogilvy's Martian diaries are once again pivotal to human survival and the continuation of life on Earth. Gateway To Mars is the third volume of The Martian Diaries series that continues the classic H.G. Wells Mars novel in a compelling, unmissable action adventure. If you're a fan of The War Of The Worlds you won't want to miss this story of survival, courage and hope that brings the original tale full circle.   "A riveting sequel to H.G. Wells' The War Of The Worlds. I highly recommend this...to sci-fi, action-thriller, time travel and adventure fans." Readers Favorite Reviews (US)  "An absolute peach of sci-fi adventure - this series is dynamic. Fabulous escapism all the way." C.A. Powell, science fiction author, The Last Days Of Thunder Child "Gateway To Mars delivers a perfect conclusion to this remarkable trilogy, one I know I'll revisit time and again." Goodreads

And now for some of my bio...

Although I have been composing music all my life I only started writing about 2013. I have always enjoyed 'The War Of The Worlds' by H.G. Wells and in 2015 decided to continue the story myself as there seemed to be questions left unanswered. That is why I created my sequel to Wells' science fiction classic and I have added my own music and sound effects to the audiobook recordings to add atmosphere and mood.

Book 2 of the series, 'Lake On The Moon', links even more closely to the story of H.G. Wells' original characters. It was a bronze medallist in the 2020 Readers Choice Awards - science fiction category.

The third book in the trilogy, 'Gateway To Mars', continues the story in 1945 on Earth, and the 2130s on the moon and Mars, and brings the original H.G. Wells tale full circle.

There is also a companion book to volume 1 - a set of diary entries from 1913 by Ogilvy, the Astronomer Royal, which fills in some of the story from his perspective. The ebook is exclusive to my email subscribers but it will be incorporated into print versions of volume one. You van join my email newsletter here:https://subscribepage.io/martian-diar...

Apart from 'The Martian Diaries' trilogy I have adapted 'The Pilgrim's Progress' by John Bunyan. It was my first project combining text with music, and will be released in the future. I also have several hundred pieces of music, and unpublished stories and poetry.

I find much inspiration by getting off the beaten track and into the great outdoors, and am in my element exploring remote locations around coastal and mountain regions, but most especially in Wales.

Excellent story, more tomorrow.

I first discovered H.E.'s sequels to Wells' WotW back in 2019 when he released his first sequel (The Martian Diaries: Vol.1 The Day Of The Martians) as a musical story. The music (similar to Jeff Wayne's treatment of the original WotW) was superb and complimented what was in reality a relatively short story. My next encounter was when he released his second episode ( The Martian Diaries: Vol. 2 Lake On The Moon ), again as a musical based story. The story was longer and more complex, but the music was as superb as before and I was once again transported back in time to the early 1900 and fighting martian tripods.
Then both books were released as e-books to read rather than listen. They were good, but I had been spoilt by the musical versions.

The release of the third and final episode in H.E.'s trilogy, this book, differed in that it was released first (and at the moment of typing) only as an e-book. A lot longer than the previous two stories, I think it benefits when reading it, from being a book first. I think this is because H.E.'s writing has matured and the story stands on its own without having the music to support it.
There are some familiar faces and characters from the first two books and obviously familiar locations, but H.E. has let his imagination roam and as time has passed, we now experience far more technology including human space travel as well as the familiar Martian tripods.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and believe it brings the trilogy to a great conclusion, but I have to say I am looking forward to the musical version which I know is coming soon. Being a considerably longer "read" I realise, to produce the music for this, is a mammoth task and so can understand why the e-book came first, but I have to say that has only whetted my appetite !!

An excellent third part to this incredible series! This took me slightly longer to warm up to in comparison to the previous two parts, but it was well worth it in the end! A really well written, excellent continuation of the story & a truly brilliant tribute to HG Wells! I do recommend!

This review is for the audiobook versions of all three books in The Martian Diaries series.

Thoroughly enjoyed all three of them. I’m a lifelong WOTW fan and pursue any variant of Wells’ original story, so when I saw these on Amazon, I had to try them out. I was not disappointed.

Technicals: The audiobook is a PRODUCTION, not just a dry read. The narrators are fantastic, there are sound effects and music (the original score was written and preformed by the author as well) just like an old-time radio play.

Story: The characters from the original novel are given new life, with new science applied. Lovers of the steampunk genre will love the science, design and hybrid technologies (classic Victorian meets super-science). The story goes in various directions, with clever weaving into and throughout the original plot. There are twists (just a small spoiler!) such as a disease brought by the Martians that decimates the Earth population, just as they were decimated by “the humblest things” in the original novel. The Red Weed becomes an entity unto itself; we discover that it isn’t just a Martian food crop! Readers of dystopian, apocalyptic stories will enjoy the strange world left in the wake of waves of Martian invasions in different eras.

The third novel takes a definite turn into the contemporary world, taking on such themes as time travel, time dilation (think INTERSTELLAR), the dangers and ubiquity of unbridled AI, the insidiousness of hostile actors working behind the scenes going undiscovered until it was too late to stop them, humans greed and blind pursuit of science, but most importantly, the short memory humans have on their own history and past mistakes.

All in all, these books were a fun ride for any Wells fan, and are good enough to convert those who don’t know of his work.

It’s 2129 and space archaeologist, Alan Sterling is about to see his career on Mars come to an abrupt end. He’s been accused of vandalizing an important, excavation area called New Africa, where evidence of life has been found. He faces dire consequences with the charges and is adamant he did nothing wrong. Will he be able to find out the truth of what really happened and clear his name?

The scientists from the prestigious Armstrong Institute are alarmed, and not only with the discovery and its link to Alan. As more of their data and analyses are made known, other concerns of impending disaster emerge. The infamous, red weed that ravaged the blue planet centuries before may be on its way to Earth. There’s also evidence the Martians plan to reclaim their planet, putting the future of the red-planet, scientific colonies in jeopardy.

Author Wilburson has written a gripping, Sci-Fi original of a future jeopardized by the unleashing of nefarious events, with unforeseen, catastrophic consequences. Who is responsible, Martians, or Earthlings? A wrinkle in time provides a clue to the past and unfolding of phenomena that will leave you gasping!

The Martian Diaries series has been a stellar follow-on to H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds to read and enjoy. Gateway to Mars is an exciting addition to the series and is perhaps my favorite tale. A must read for fans of thrilling, Sci-Fi adventure, highly recommended!

I received an advance copy of Gateway to Mars, this is my honest review.

I’m a huge fan of the first two books in the Martian Diaries trilogy, and I was very excited to get my hands on an advance copy of Gateway to Mars.

I would consider this book more of a reboot of The War of the Worlds rather than a sequel to Lake on the Moon. It reimagines Wells’s story in the far future, where technologically advanced humans are this time invading Mars.

I loved all the call outs to the original book, as well as to the first two books in the Martian Diaries, as well as to the author himself!

As with the other books in the series, the question of God and religious faith is important, and I liked this detail.

It took me a while to get into this book. I was disappointed at first by how different it was from the other books, and I missed the characters I had grown to love. I found it hard to connect with the characters in Gateway to Mars, and thought their dialogue often stilted.

However, once I thought of it as a standalone book, I appreciated it much more. I like the ideas presented in the future world, as well as how the story develops when humans have the technological advantage. I found it very interesting to think about humans being the invaders on Mars. It’s also full of observations on current issues, and I liked the aspects of interdimensional travel as well as time travel.

Another great story by H.E Wilburson, which I look forward to listening to when the dramatized audio version is released. However, I would advise fans of The Day of the Martians and Lake on the Moon to think of this more as a standalone reimagining of The War of the Worlds, and leave behind their expectations before they turn the first page.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Enjoyed this story!

What an entertaining sci-fi story in Gateway to Mars by H.E. Wilburson. This is the third volume in what is currently a three-volume set, The Martian Diaries. I recommend reading each book in order. If you like HG Wells, you are certain to like these books. Gateway to Mars finds the earth still in peril and on the brink of extinction, due to a Martian virus. Between the past and the present, the fight for survival continues, with doctors trying to find the cure before it is too late. It's a magnificently written tale that gives so many details and brings the characters to life. It reads so believable, which is also a trait of HG Wells. Basically, Wilburson picked up where Wells left off in War of the Worlds. A definite attention grabber, so much I couldn't put it down. Both thrilling and intriguing, all the way to the end. The characterizations are engrossing and dynamic. I am a definite fan of this author! Whatever this author writes, I read. This author brings the words to life. The story brings in the believable, even if almost impossible. Gateway To Mars is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

In “Gateway To Mars,” the third volume of “The Martian Diaries” series, H.E. Wilburson presents a three-in-one conclusion to the trilogy. The story takes the reader from Earth to the Moon, to Mars, and back to Earth through a trip that begins in the past and ends in the future. Great science fiction.

Wilburson follows a straightforward, incremental style, as in the previous two volumes, much like the example set by H.G. Wells. Also in the style of Wells, Wilburson uses a single character to narrate the story from their point of view. But note that, from time to time, the story changes quickly, and it would be best for the reader to pay attention as they go along.

The story begins with Jack Stent in 1945 and ends with Alan Sterling in 2133. The two are from different times and different parallel universes and are closely related. In addition to the Martians and parallel universes, there are concerns about carbon footprints, global warming, and even a pesky AI system to deal with.

It’s a great read with lots of complexities and surprise twists.

Complex Series Finale
The final volume in The Martian Diaries, Gateway to Mars, was both intriguing and complex. There are returning characters and also some great new characters. I found this volume in particular, a little difficult to follow at times and felt that a second read of the trilogy in its entirety would be beneficial. It is evident that the author’s vision for the story is clear and that is why I believe a second read would be worth it. I enjoyed the audiobook version of the story as it is a well-done performance with amazing background sounds and music. My favorite part in this volume is the encounter with the world conquering AI near the end of the book. This book is a must-read for fans of The War of the Worlds and also for those who enjoy time travel, Martians, Mars and AI. There are some religious themes near the end that are thought provoking and formed a nice closing to the story.

With the previous two Mars invasions and the introduction of the disease Marseria in the previous book which has now infected most of Earth it has sped up human technological evolution and by 1945, where this books starts humans are travelling to the moon with the British the first ones there. A grown up Jack Stent who is stepson to George is on one of the rocket ships heading to the moon on a mission to destroy the Martian base there once and for all. But once there something disastrous happens and only travelling through time and parallel dimensions can save Earth now. However in the 22nd century humans realise there is something more terrible than Martians to contend with. After reading the first two books in the series this book seems to change gear and was a little confusing and hard to get into at first but if you persevere with it, it all starts coming together in to a suspense filled ending although with maybe a chilling warning that humankind may not be safe from each other.

The Martian Diaries: Vol. 3 Gateway To Mars
By H.E Wilburson @martiandiaries
This book is the end to the series that we deserve!
Gripping and clever, it moves in directions I didn't expect and swings from the concerns of the original to more contemporary subjects in science fiction without losing the human focus of the first three books (including Wells). With a drastically expanded story and a sure hand on the rudder, Wilburson steers us to concerns echoing those of today's world. This is one of those books I really hated to finish, I had become invested in the story and characters. But it ended well in a fashion that was true to the story. Well done!

As a devoted fan since "The Day of the Martians" (2018), I eagerly devoured "Gateway to Mars," the captivating third audiobook in H.E. Wilburson's thrilling series. While the story is relativity self-contained, I felt like I got a lot more out of it by revisiting the world Wilburson has meticulously crafted before starting on the new one. Besides, it was a good excuse to listen to the first two books again!

Gateway to Mars focuses on two characters facing dire situations. Jack Stent, Ogilvy's nephew, finds himself on a lunar mission gone disastrously wrong in 1945. Meanwhile, in 2129, space archaeologist Alan Sterling has been accused of contaminating a Martian excavation site called New Africa. Wilburson's talent lies in the way these seemingly disparate threads converge in a way that's both surprising and deeply satisfying.

Wilburson also finds a fresh perspective on the human-Martian conflict, which kept me on the edge of my seat. I also can't praise Paul Morris enough for his narration. He breathes life into the characters, ensuring they remain distinct and captivating throughout the story.

Gateway to Mars delivers a perfect conclusion to this remarkable trilogy, one I know I'll revisit time and again.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

"Gateway to Mars" is the third and final book by H.E. Wilburson.

It follows from the earlier books, which I loved, although it took me a few chapters to get into it as it's very different from the others. But knowing the author's writing style I soldiered on and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This time you find yourself in the 22nd century, 2129 precisely, and humans have started colonising Mars, during an excavation to an area called New Africa human DNA has been found. Human DNA on Mars? surely it must be a mistake or has some archaeologist tampered with it? Upon further tests, it was found that it's thousands of years old!!.

I won't reveal more of the plot as it gets very interesting and you have to find out for yourself. It can be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend you start from the beginning, You won't be disappointed.

Overall an excellent series which I thoroughly enjoyed and a fantastic follow-on to H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds".

Many thanks to the author for a review copy.

The Martian Diaries: Vol. 3 Gateway To Mars H E Wilburson has created another 5 star addition to his Martian Diaries trilogy, with the superbly crafted Gateway to Mars. Keeping true to the ethos of H G Wells, this has elements of The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine woven into the epic sci-fi storyline. Once again humankind finds it is in a titanic battle in the 22nd century with a new invasion of the Martian tripods on Mars and Earth and Alan Sterling, who becomes the Time Man, struggles to save the human race from annihilation.

They say ambition is the soul of wit. Wait, no, that’s not right... brevity! Brevity’s the thing, wherein we’ll catch that king’s conscience. Hold on. Let me reset.

Ambition is something, though, and clearly ambition is the driving force behind H.E. Wilburson’s The Martian Diaries: Vol. 3 Gateway To Mars . Whereas Lake on the Moon was twice the length of The Day of the Martians, here the third book in the trilogy is twice the twice. That is, double the length of Lake on the Moon. If I appear a tad discombobulated in this, my book report, there is a reason; and that reason is, the effect of trying to wrap my head around what I just finished reading.

To begin, let’s do broad strokes: did I want to keep reading (the sine qua non of any book)? And the answer is: yes. As much as we all want that bodice ripped off in a bawdy romance, I wanted the veil torn away so I could know what was, did, and will happen.

Clear as mud, you say? Yes, there is that...

So time travel reared its head in Lake on the Moon, and here in Gateway to Mars the rearing has become a hydra, of sorts, with heads composed of Artificial Intelligence, time travel, the future, and alternate dimensions of reality. Are you for real, I can hear you ask? And, as I nod most realistically, I point at the pages of this book and give a little shrug.

My prediction in the review of Lake on the Moon was off. Way, way, way off. You might say I missed by a whole dimension. Ha ha!

Look, reviewing Gateway to Mars without spoilers is nigh impossible, and where’s the fun in that? But I can say we’ve come far afield from a sequel to H.G. Well’s master work, and into Wilburson’s very own rather active imagination.

It’s clear I’ve achieved neither brevity nor wit at this point, so I will get to it: Gateway to Mars is a must-read for anyone who has read the previous two books. The story is wrapped up—that is, the story extending from The War of the Worlds is wrapped up—and... well, I can’t say there is closure, because there is not, but this new arc leaves us hanging in that most pleasantly annoying way that literature will sometimes do.

So take a chance on Gateway. It’s like Macbeth said in his comment regarding this very trilogy. When asked about Wilburson’s third book he was quoth: I am in [the story] / Stepped in so far, that, should I wade no more, / [I’ll repeatedly kick myself for not knowing what happened].

Truer words were never spoken. And, after a comment like that, how can you not grab a copy?

Broader in scope and scale--a radio play to make Wells proud

In reviewing the first Martian Diaries volume, "The Day of the Martians," I'd called it a pleasing Sci-Fi Aperitif: competently produced, but at only 2 hours in length, it wasn't quite filling.

Finally, at last, we've arrived to the meaty main course--enough to fill your plate and then some. In appropriate homage to the source material, this substantially longer 'audiobook' is really a bonafide radio play, with excellent sound effects, a top-tier narrator, and even music composed by the story's author. The music is well-produced and fitting across the board, showing some impressive cross-discipline skills on behalf of the writer. The sound effects enhance dramatic moments and vividly set the scene: as an example, early on, there's a speech broadcasted from Earth to a ship out in space, and the oration has some delightful radio crackle and post-processing overlaid that just sounds so sci-fi-film authentic. The narrator has one of those infinitely listen-able voices, with some good character differentiation where appropriate.

The writing style itself reminds me of Wells in all the ways that it should. The writing has that formality of language where you'd expect it to be read aloud with a classic early-20th-century transatlantic accent. I also appreciated the thoughtful alternate-history moments where a technologically inferior humanity grapples with being thrust into the space age.

That being said, if the first Martian Diaries felt like a bona-fide continuation of the H.G.Wells' "War of the Worlds," this installment begins to shake off some of that impression by introducing elements that the original story never included (even if Wells explored some of those elements in his other books). In other words, while the first installment was hyper-focused on extending "War of the Worlds" in a way that felt true to the spirit of that book, Vol. 3 seems willing to take on a broader creative scope--whether that is to volume 3's benefit or detriment will probably vary from reader to reader. I, personally, enjoyed the evolution of the story, but other readers might reasonably bristle that this volume feels a bit less War-of-the-Worldsy than do prior volumes.

In sum, readers who enjoy rich audio productions of compelling sci-fi tales will likely find plenty to enjoy in this series. The stories work well as natural continuations to Wells' novel, and this latest volume uses that foundation as a springboard into something larger in scope and scale.

Gateway to Mars is Perfection. The Martian Diaries: Vol. 3 Gateway To Mars

Gateway To Mars continues the The Martian Diaries in thrilling, pulsating, and epic fashion. We begin in 1945 with the heroic Jack Stent on a mission to the moon that goes tragically wrong. The story then continues with Alan Sterling in 2129 on Mars, fighting to save his career. Things soon take an unexpected turn with an astonishing discovery that changes everything and puts Earth once again at the mercy of The Martians. Only an assorted mix of men and women can save humanity from becoming enslaved and in time, perhaps extinct.

You'll meet so many diverse, brilliant characters along the way as you become entwined in an epic sci-fi tale with jaw-dropping moments you will not see coming. Even H.E Wilburson makes an appearance on the red planet.

You've done it again, H.E. Brilliant storytelling, continuing The War of the Worlds in a truly unique way that H.G. Wells himself would have been extremely proud. If you're a fan of science fiction you should not miss these thrilling stories. I can't recommend The Martian Diaries high enough. Five stars.

I loved this conclusion to the War of the Worlds extension trilogy. I have read the other two and thoroughly enjoyed those. HE Wilburson has captured the essence of HG Wells’s writing. This starts on the Moon and Mars, fighting to stay alive in a hostile environment, but all is not as it seems, as we discover, as the book progresses. The change, the sudden leap forward to the twenty-second century executed with an aplomb Wells would have applauded. The way the new characters mirror the old, the synchronicities and the tone of the book are flawless. If Wells had written War of the Worlds set now, with AI, our current tech and our instant access to information… this is what he would have produced. It came as a surprise to leap forward like that, but one I really got into.

Can you read this book standalone? Probably not. Much of it won’t flow the way it’s intended. All the little callbacks to the previous three books (yes, I’m including Wells’s original) will sail over a reader’s head. That said… reading all three is no bad thing. As a fan of War of the Worlds, this trilogy gave me a visceral thrill, as though discovering the hidden sequel HG Wells had caught in his time machine and brought to the 2020s.

An intriguing conclusion to the series, I will admit to some confusion when there was a change in setting, just read through it and eventually cleared up. Could have been more explanation in one area and the ending became more convoluted, probably worsened because I had another bokk to finish urgently and put this aside for a week or so.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of this trilogy and would highly recommend the first one in the series. This last installment for whatever reason I had to grind my way through as it totally could not catch my attention as the previous ones did, This being said, it may certainly have been on a personal note and if you enjoyed the first two of the series by all means give this one a shot.

I just did not finish. The story line did not stick close enough to HG Wells universe for my taste. I may have lost a bit by reading this version versus an audio book. The audio book would have come across more like a radio show and very likely I would have enjoyed it more. I might try to restart, but not in the near future.

Have a GoodReads.
