3.5⭐️ rounded up.

Starting with the fourth book in a series isn’t always the smartest, but I found myself enjoying this nonetheless. Detective Kat Ballantyne is a super interesting character. As she attends a crime writing convention with her husband, Van, one of the authors is found dead in the green room. Detective Ballantyne takes on the case and starts to investigate who might have wanted Mark Swift dead. There were plenty of twists and turns and the ending was both heartbreaking and satisfying, with the final twist taking me by surprise.
I really enjoyed Kat’s eye for detail and inability to stop until the case is fully closed. She recognizes when things aren’t quite right and can decipher even the most difficult of clues. I definitely want to read the other books in this series!

Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and Brilliance Publishing for the ALC!

These Detective Kate Ballantyne novels have really grown on me and I grab for them any chance they become available. This is a classic locked-door mystery which is my favorite trope of the genre. This story could be an offshoot of Clue for all the secret passages and mysterious characters. can't wait for book 5!

A book about an author...who was found dead at an affair he was being headlined at! Wow! This was the opening!!

And, talk about a LOCKED ROOM MYSTERY?? …. 😮😮😮

*** Warning: This one delves into rape and a bit of partner abuse. If this is something you can’t tolerate, you may want to pass on it. ***

So, DI Kat Ballantyne is at an author visit with her husband. While they’re waiting for the author to come on stage, later than planned, an employee comes on instead…screaming that he’s dead!
Being as Kat is right there, she goes to investigate.
Maybe he’s not really dead. Maybe he’s just sleeping?😴 But no, he’s dead.

And so, she starts to delve into the life of this author. And the more she digs, it seems the more people she finds who would like him to be dead! Including some of his ex-wives! 😬😮😮😬

What a tangled web we weave….

And all the stuff that comes out with all the digging… well, heartbreaking, and disgusting!
I wanted to reach through the book and give him a good, swift kick myself!

Of note, this is book #4 in the series.
RELEASE DATE IS COMING UP!! Look 👀 for it on 4/29/25!!

#TheLyingMan by #AndyMaslen and narrated nicely by #EllPotter.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!!

This is book four in the Detective Kat Ballantyne series, and I can confidently say that you don't have to read the others in the series first (because I haven't, ha). However, after reading this one, I will seek them out because I really enjoyed this "locked room mystery" mystery!

Kat and her crew battle against internal strife, lying mystery writers, interfering podcasters, and the fact that the victim was such a POS that it is easier to number people who DIDN'T have a grudge against him than did. Kat also has to confront her personal feelings about the case: she's always believed that no one deserves to be murdered, but dang, Mark Swift was a real piece of work. Kat discovers more horrific details of his life, and wrestles with the feeling that the murderer did the world a favour by disposing of a horrid man.

I enjoyed this novel: the characters are well thought out, the plot is twisty enough to keep the reader engaged, and the solution isn't too far out of the realm of possibility and believability.

I'll definitely look for the other books in the series!

I received a free audiobook copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.

This book was OK for me. It wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't awful. A classic detective who-done-it mystery with a few twists. It kept me interested and was well written. The narrator did a fantastic job capturing the emotions and personalities of the characters.

The lying man by Andy Maslen is number 4 in the detective Kat Ballantyne series which is based around the mysterious death of a crime author.
The book starts with Kat attending a true crime event with her husband where the main speaker an author is found dead backstage.
Kat takes on the case and as she delves deep into the authors world she discovers shocking secrets and plenty of people who would want the author dead.
Kat uncovers plenty of secrets and lies and discovers the author has committed some very heinous crimes in the past which set off emotional and internal struggles for Kat.
I enjoyed this book and there was definitely lots of twists and turns to keep the plot interesting .
I found the character Kat to be particularly personable and likeable.
I would definitely read the other books in this series as I would like to see the development of the characters in this book.

Book 4 in the DS Kat Ballantyne series. Didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others in the series as I found the plot to be a little ‘Agatha Christie’ Saying that , love the characters in the book and looking forward to how the new member of the team Fez fits in.

"The Lying Man" crafts a labyrinth of deception and moral ambiguity, drawing readers into a world where every detail pulses with hidden significance.

In this latest installment of the Detective Kat Ballantyne series, the story unfolds at a bustling crime-writing festival—a setting that doubles as both a celebration of literary ambition and a stage for dark, unforeseen revelations. When a renowned novelist is discovered dead in a locked room under circumstances that seemingly point to natural causes, DS Kat Ballantyne’s incisive eye unearths clues that hint at a far more sinister truth. The premise alone is intriguing...

Kat Ballantyne is a protagonist whose personal and professional conflicts are rendered with admirable precision. Maslen’s portrayal of Kat is both multi-faceted and deeply human. Her relentless determination to peel back the layers of an intricately woven mystery reflects not only a commitment to justice but also a poignant exploration of the imperfections inherent in those who seek it.

Beyond its compelling plot, "The Lying Man" indulges readers in a meta-narrative where the world of literature collides with hard-edged criminology. The backdrop of a crime-writing festival isn’t only scenery—it also mirrors the pervasive duplicity of its inhabitants.

Rivalries and secret vendettas simmer beneath the surface of public acclaim, suggesting that in this world, every smile hides an ulterior motive and every whispered conversation might be a clue.

From a technical standpoint, the pacing is as meticulous as it is surprising. Maslen orchestrates a tension that steadily builds, ensuring that each revelation, however minute, propels the narrative toward a crescendo of enlightenment and suspense. The clever misdirects and well-placed narrative pauses allow the reader to savor a moment of realization before plunging headlong into the next twist.

"The Lying Man" is a vibrant exploration of the complexities of truth, the seductive nature of deception, and the ever-present interplay between appearance and reality. For aficionados of detective fiction and lovers of nuanced literary explorations alike, this novel offers a rich, thought-provoking journey that renews our faith in the art of storytelling.

For those who find themselves captivated by this novel’s blend of intellectual intrigue and emotional depth, exploring other works in the Detective Kat Ballantyne series or delving into similarly layered mysteries can offer additional insight into the art of modern suspense.

3.5 Stars for me!

The ending is not given in this spoiler.

Tjis was a solid 4.5 Star read for me until the MC's conversation with a new Detective named Fez. Leah made an assumption about Fez due to her interactions with a previous partner and treated him with hostility. Fez ends up meeting the issue head on and Leah tells him that her previous partner treated her poorly once he found out she was gay. She misheard a conversation Fez had with another officer and believed he felt the same way.

Kat holds Fez back and says that he can file a claim due to Leah's racist behavior... what, what, what? Fez says no and that it wasn't a hill to die on. He handled the issue directly and with class and was happy to move on.

My problem is that the over-saturation of the word, racist, waters down anything said to a person of a different race or religion that you and/or they don't like as racism.

It is August of 2025 and it appears that offending someone is the same as hating them or wanting to physically hurt or kill them. Racism is horrific and is still alive and kicking. Making an assumption about a person's feelings towards you because of your sexuality is ignorance, not racism.

The author handled some of the more radical behavior a bit better by highlighting how aggressive those professing it are. Good intentions but brainwashed to bully anyone with a different point of view.

Kat's son is an example of how good intentions can create highly ignorant and dangerous people. He celebrates the death of the murder victim because he has different political and world views. Because he 'feels' that the murder victim doesn't align with his 'facts', he must be evil. Why do I say 'ignorant'? It us because he has no perspective other than what he has been told. He lives at home where mom and dad pay for everything and all of his needs are provided for.

If you want to dramatically reduce our reliance on carbon based fuels and products, something has to replace it that isn't worse. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Deforestation and global cooling was all the rage. Use three squares of toilet, reusable towels in bathrooms and a switch from paper to plastic bags (byproduct of oil). 1 -2 unsanitary and 3. millions upon millions of plastic bag waste. I drive an electric car and a gas car. The electric car (as of 2025) isn't great for road trips due to 45 minute stops every 200 or so miles. Get it to a 10 minute charge for 300 miles and a stronger electricity infrastructure and you have a full replacement for gas cars.

End of rant. 🤓

4.5 stars.

The Lying Man by Andy Maslen is an outstanding fourth installment in the Detective Kat Ballantyne mystery series.

Detective Sergeant Kat Ballantyne and her husband, Ivan, are at a crime writers festival when popular author Mark Swift is found dead. Kat suspects foul play and her hunch is confirmed by pathologist Dr. Jack Beale. With her colleague, Detective Constable Tom Gray still in hospital, she teams up again with DC Leah Hooper.

The first thing Kat needs to figure out is how the killer entered and exited the room where Mark was murdered. As it stands, she is puzzled by this lock room mystery but she is quite tenacious as she goes back to the scene of the crime in hopes of solving this perplexing part of the case.

Kat, Leah, and newly assigned DC Faisal “Fez” Mohammed investigate all aspects of Mark’s life. He is a bestselling author and it appears he might have burned a few bridges on his way to the top of the crime writing sales list. No one is off the suspect list including his former and current wives.

Kat is also still trying to solve the mystery of who deposited a large sum of money into her bank account. She remains at odds with her direct supervisor, Detective Inspector Stuart Carver. While Kat manages to keep him at bay, she knows she needs to neutralize the threat he poses to her career.

The Lying Man is a riveting mystery with an interesting cast of characters. Kat is dedicated to her career and she has a strong moral compass. However, what she, Leah, and Fez uncover about the victim presents her with an ethical dilemma. The investigation into Mark’s death is sometimes frustrating as there are few leads to follow. The storyline is engaging and goes down a very dark path as new information about Mark comes to light. Andy Maslen brings this puzzling mystery to a satisfactory conclusion that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next mystery in the brilliant Detective Kat Ballantyne series.

4* THE book I've been waiting for so far this year, so sooo glad I got an ARC. But, ugh, the comeuppance I'd been hoping for, didn't happen.

There's not been a bad book in this series, and this follows on nicely from the previous one that'd bigged up Kat's dad's and Carve-Up's roles in the 'bribery' situation. But, gah, I'd been hoping both guys would've been in for it; alas, it was not to be. But, from the ending of this tale, it seems that Kat has a new CI that'll be helping her get her all-too-right revenge.

The tale has a cosy mystery feel to it, despite the reveals about the deceased, and I think Kat did the right thing at the end, both where Tomski was concerned, and a former colleague. I mean, she's done similar-ish where Liz is concerned and not thought about the repercussions if that mystery gets unravelled, so yeah, I bought that she did that she did at the end.

I liked, too, the family bonding in this, especially the chat with 14yo Riley about how to respect the female sex. But, what's with Kat fancying the coroner? Yes, apparently he's a hunk, but she admits to herself she's jealous he's got Gina?? Isn't she meant to be happily married to Van? I do hope the author isn't going to break them up, or have Kat cheating - like her father. She's been nothing 'like father, like offspring' so far, so please don't have her go there.

The tale is believable and there's a little decent detective work but also some women who refused to be silenced who practically solved the case, though. It's quite PC in condemning some real-life cops who've sullied the badge, as well as having that conversation with Riley, but parts did feel a little inorganic/didactic. Still, it didn't detract from a good tale.

ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer, for my reading pleasure.

This was a fun take on your classic locked door mystery! DS Kat Ballantyne is attending a festival when a murder occurs – you can’t be any faster to a crime scene! It’s the perfect setting because it’s a crime-writing festival and the victim is a famous, or more accurately, notorious author. He’s discovered in the locked green room when a volunteer breaks through a window to check on him. Which is more of a mystery – who did it or how they did it? It’s confounding to everyone, and that’s just the beginning. There are too many suspects who had a motive for killing the author and too much opportunity with the high attendance at the festival and no cameras. Will Kat and her team be able to unravel all the threads of this complicated crime?

There are complicated themes in this story, and Kat struggles to balance being an officer of the law and a female in today’s society. The author is a misogynistic narcissist whose death most people celebrate rather than mourn. Will she even feel a sense of justice if she captures his killer when she actually wants to congratulate them? It’s something most women can relate to, especially those who work in law enforcement or the medical field. Their sworn duty wrestles with their intrinsic need to see evil people suffer for their sins. I applaud this author for tackling this tough issue and doing so in an entertaining way!

I’m a huge fan of this author and his series, and I can’t recommend both enough!

Rating: 4–4.5 *

The Lying Man is the 4th installment in the Detective Kat Ballantyne series. I really enjoyed the setup: a murder at a crime-writing festival? Yes, please. The locked room mystery vibe is always fun, and this one kept me on my toes with clever twists and a steady build.

Without giving anything away, I’ll just say: this book had me questioning my own sense of right and wrong a few times. There were moments where I found myself sympathizing with the killer and I love when a story challenges my thinking like that.

I was also really glad to see what happened with Tom after everything that went down in the previous book. I was worried...

As for Carver? Yeah… still waiting for karma to do its thing. Maybe in the next one. Fingers crossed.

Oh...almost forgot... I really like the new team addition. He seems capable, grounded, and a great balance to the existing cast.
Also, I really enjoyed the narrator’s performance in the audiobook. She brings Kat’s perspective to life in a way that feels sharp, steady, and believable ... she really matches the tone of the series.

Overall, this was a smart, layered mystery that delivered on both the plot and the characters. If you enjoy twisty crime reads with a bit of moral gray, this one’s worth checking out.

DS Kat Ballantyne faces one of her most challenging cases yet when a renowned crime author is found dead during a local literary gathering. The circumstances are perplexing—no clear evidence, no witnesses, and a locked room that offers no answers. As Kat delves into the investigation, she uncovers a web of secrets, rivalries, and motives among the attendees, each more complex than the last.

Complicating matters, Kat is under scrutiny from her superior due to a suspicious bank deposit that threatens her credibility and position. With a new Detective Inspector and her team’s support, Kat must navigate the treacherous waters of internal politics and a high-profile murder investigation. Every lead seems promising until it’s thwarted by solid alibis, leaving Kat in a relentless pursuit of the truth.

This installment in the Detective Kat Ballantyne series is a masterclass in suspense, blending intricate plotting with rich character development. The narrative keeps readers on edge, delivering twists and turns that challenge perceptions and keep the pages turning. A must-read for fans of gripping police procedurals and psychological thrillers.

Andy Maslen’s The Lying Man delivers a taut, suspenseful mystery that feels right at home alongside the likes of Law & Order or other top-tier crime dramas. With a sharp narrative and compelling character arcs, the story dives deep into a complex web of deceit, expertly leading listeners through a maze of motives, secrets, and shifting truths.

What sets this audiobook apart is its meticulous pacing. Maslen methodically introduces a wide range of suspects, each with enough backstory and intrigue to keep the listener guessing. The buildup is deliberate and well-crafted, heightening the tension and allowing the suspense to crescendo naturally.

The narration further enhances the experience, bringing authenticity and emotional depth to the story. Whether it’s the sharp dialogue or the chilling revelations, every twist feels earned and impactful.

Overall, The Lying Man is a standout addition to the crime thriller genre—perfect for fans of procedural mysteries and psychological suspense. It’s a gripping listen from start to finish, and a testament to Maslen’s skill in weaving a layered, intelligent whodunit.

I really enjoyed this novel - the first I’ve read by Andy Maslen, and I was really glad that it was suggested to me as a buddy read.

I liked main character Kat Ballantyne and I liked the way we were plunged straight into the action as she and husband Van took a night off at a crime fiction festival only for Kat to be pulled into the murder of an author who was supposed to appear at the festival.

I’d describe this book as a locked room mystery with a slice of Me Too at its dark heart. In his author’s note at the end, Maslen describes how after writing the locked room plot he decided he wanted an extra layer to the story. I’m glad he made that decision, as it was that layer that made it a page-turner for me.

I’ll be going back now to read Kat’s earlier adventures. I particularly liked the new member of her team, Fez, and as a result particularly didn’t like the way her longer-standing staff member Tom behaved, but I gather that Tom was previously injured in the line of duty and now Kat is concerned by his change in personality. So, of course, I want to know what Tom was like before and what happened to him!

Andy Maslen creates a thriller with a killer who impossibly escapes from a locked room that has his famous victim.

Detective Sergeant Kat Ballantyne and Ivan, her husband, have entered Criminal Herts, an annual crime-writing festival wherein famous author Mark Swift is about to enter the stage and be interviewed live. Kat has little interest in being there but it's Ivan's longtime interest as a fan for both of them to be there.

After a short time, a woman enters the stage and yells out to the audience that Mark is dead. Kat jumps out and enters the murder room after the door to the locked room is keyed open. Kate examines the room and comes quickly to two questions: How was Mark killed and how did the killer get out of the locked room.

These two questions drive Kat and her team throughout the book as they interview witnesses and question two of Mark's ex-wives and his current wife. These questions kept me reading right up to end until I could find the answers to those two questions. And boy was I surprised with the unexpected answers!

injustice at work

I got so much out of this story that represents true life. I don't want to give too much away...but one of the themes threaded through this riveting novel is rape. For me there is no distinction between murder and rape. Rape is a form of murder because raping/sexually molesting someone deliberately murders the person who was developing in their life's journey. After being raped I no longer was becoming that person I ended up being someone totally different, someone with complex-PTSD, someone with hypervigilence, someone whose body was permanently damaged. I was murdered and someone else grew in my place. I could so relate to wanting vengeance for being raped. I would end up being a murderer though and I couldn't live with myself then. No matter what.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and love Kat-the main character.

A huge thankyou to both Thomas and Mercer as well as Net galley for this ARC book. #TheLyingMan #Netgalley.
Firstly, in terms of the mystery and plot element, the author Andy Maslen cleverly weaved the "who dunnit" trope with a number of possible suspects in correlation to the first murder victim (the thriller author) and later with his friend and co- worker- this had me guessing right up until the crux of the story when the pieces started fitting together like a puzzle making for an immersive read.
Secondly, I found the main character of DS Ballantyne to be likeable and extremely believable and I also appreciated her empathy and professionalism when dealing with the suspects as a whole (unlike her boss Stuart Carver). The other characters were also a good addition to the story and well fleshed out.

Det. Kat Ballantyne is at an author crime festival, which she is not a real fan of, but her husband is, trying to enjoy herself. When the key author is late getting on stage the crowd starts speculating he is pulling some sort of stunt, which is what is sounds like when an assistant to the festival runs up on stage and yells that the man is dead. Kat immediately goes into police mode. Over the next few days way too much disturbing information about the man is found, including women coming forward about attacks, abuse and payoffs. With way too many suspects and alibis, Kat wonders if the real murder will be found, and with what she learns she wonders if she can truly keep her oath to arrest and charge the guilty considering the true nature of the victim. Blurry lines indeed...

This is the 4th in the series and while I always suggest you read the books in order, I really believe you need to with this series. Otherwise, you will not understand what is going on. It's like picking up a tv show in season 4. You don't know the back stories or the cliffhanger from season 3. Same here! But, mostly, you will miss the great character development and continuing plot lines. While the whole bad boss trope is annoying, I love that Kat and her husband Ivan have a good solid relationship! How many detective series feature a divorced, detached main character? If nothing else, that sets this series apart. So although I am still antsy to get more movement on the multi-book plots, I am settled in for the series!

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.

Kat is at a crime writer's festival when the main speaker is found dead in a locked room from the inside. At first it seems as it's a case of natural death, however, as the investigation proceeds they'll find he was drowned after being hit in the back of his head. It's not an easy case to work as there's a lot secrets surrounding Mark Swift's persona, how he dealt with women and also how he dealt with his wives. Kat and her team will uncover a deep well of crimes and an abhorrent way of life led by the deceased and some of his associates. The Lying Man has a great deal of mystery, humor, and action, and Kat is plagued with doubts regarding the outcome of the case. It also ends with a cliffhanger which opens another case of worms for the next book in the series.
I thank Mr. Maslen, his publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.

The Lying Man is the fourth book in the Kat Ballantyne series by Andy Maslen. This is a clever whodunit set at a crime-writing festival.

DS Kat Ballantyne arrives at the festival looking for a break from the demands of police work. But when celebrated crime novelist Mark Swift is found dead in a locked room just moments before taking the stage, her instincts kick in. Though the scene suggests natural causes, Kat picks up on subtle anomalies, those tiny details that scream foul play to a seasoned detective.

This is a very enjoyable series, excellent characters, clever plots that are well written and perfectly paced. This works well as a standalone but the series is too good to miss out on to just read this one. A 4.5 rating upgraded to a 5 star.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

An interesting twist on a locked room mystery -- Kat Ballantyne knows her victim, a famous crime novelist, was murdered. But she cannot figure out how his murdered managed to exit the room where he was found in the midst of a crowded crime writers festival.

And the more Kat investigates the famous author, the longer her suspect list grows. As much as fans adored his writing, his real life persona left much to be desired.

Another solid police procedural with a great female lead, some interesting new characters, and an intriguing mystery. Definitely recommend reading these in order as there are some underlying themes that tie the books together that are continued here, but despite a large gap between reading the last book and this one I was able to easily pick up right where we left off.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

A locked room murder mystery at a writing festival/book fair. The headliner, Mark Swift, is in the green room preparing to be interviewed on the main stage. But he’s late again. When someone goes to fetch him, he’s dead. Kate Ballentine attended the event because her husband, Van, likes murder mysteries. She doesn’t, because she has to solve them IRL. Like this one. Detective Ballantine jumps into action and we have a front-row seat to her actions and thought processes.
It’s quite a satisfying story. There are some hints to previous cases (this is #4 in the series), and I will definitely go back and listen to the earlier ones, as I like her character and her relationships with her best friend and her husband. The tension between her and her work superior reminds me of the series featuring Detectives Linley (Elizabeth Brown) and Richard Jury (Margaret Grimes) and their officious and odious bosses. Very enjoyable.
My thanks to the author, publisher, @BrillianceAudio, and #NetGalley for early access to the audiobook of #TheLyingMan for review purposes. Publication date: 29 April 2025.

This is the fourth book in the DS Kat Ballantyne series, and it is best to read them in order, so you can fully understand Kat’s backstory, including her troubled relationship with her father and boss…

I really like Kat’s character, the author has successfully created a strong, multi-dimensional, and likeable female lead. The supporting cast are also well-crafted, with each one of them contributing to the sophisticated story line. The author also creates a great sense of atmosphere and suspense, with timely twists and a well-paced plot, and in this book, he gives no clues as to the identity of the offender, which made me want to read on. This book is so much more than a standard whodunit, and I am already looking forward to the next instalment.

I had to preorder this book as soon as I finished the last one as I wanted to know how it got resolved. This gives a hint that it needs to be listened to in order to really get the background of the characters as this is referenced throughout. The lead detective is slightly traumatised, although most of this has been resolved in previous books - it is really the family and direct manager issue that is now being addressed. What I didnt understand is how so often she bypassed her manager and went to his manager - that would be interesting dynamic.

There are new characters introduced which look to be interesting.
The locked in murder was fun to resolve and I did appreciate the author's note at the end.

All in all didnt disappoint and now I cant wait for the next installment.

In the fourth novel featuring DS Kat Ballantyne, the tables are turned when she goes to a crime-writing festival for relaxation but finds herself at the scene of the murder of a well known author.

Maslen is a master of crime thrillers. He delivers plenty of red herrings, realistic dialogue, pacey writing, a likeable police woman and relatable relationships. The Lying Man has a very contemporary theme, and Maslen has Kat pondering on the weight placed on upholding the law versus delivering justice.

The "MO" in the crime is particularly inventive, with no initial clues about the perpetrator, which compels you to read on.

This is number four in the series, I feel this is better read in order so that you get the characters back stories and the references to previous events will be more meaningful. It's a great series, Kat is a great lead character, as she's likeable and doesn't do stupid things like some I've read. I enjoy the writing style and found myself whizz through the story which moves at a good pace.
My feelings about certain people's involvement were proved true but there were also some things that I didn't suspect, which is always good.
I enjoyed this more than the previous book as it dealt less with Kats contentious relationship with her father, which I preferred.
