Now that they have been married for almost two years, Christy and Todd are facing challenges neither of them expected. Everything that felt familiar in their relationship is being shaken. All they had hoped for in their future together is about to change.
When Christy shares her life-altering news with Todd, she doesn't receive the joyful response she was expecting. Aunt Marti inserts a few strong opinions about how the young couple should navigate this difficult season and when Todd's dad asks for help renovating his Newport Beach home it's clear that nothing will ever be the same for them again.
As Christy and Todd's relationship is radically altered will they continue to drift apart? Or will they come through the major shifts with a deeper love each for other and the One who brought them together in the first place?

Three and a half stars. Unlike a lot of people I had not read any of the Christy Miller series as a teenager, so I came to this with no knowledge of the two main characters, Christy and Todd, her husband of not quite two years. It didn’t matter that I had not read the earlier books. I quickly got into the story, largely because some of the issues and challenges facing Christy and Todd were familiar to me through the situations of family and friends involved in ministry. Christy works at time in a bookshop and Todd is a youth minister. I felt the situation when things start to fall apart, despite trying to follow God, was conveyed well. Christy’s reactions resonated more with me than the way Todd did to the problems they faced. It is Christian fiction and as such contains a strong faith theme. Bible verses and relationship with God run throughout the book, even though not all the characters who claim to be Christian at times portray the best character traits. But that is life. What I liked was that it showed even when a couple is in love, marriage will not always go smoothly and there will be times when communication breaks down and people respond to events in different ways. The book shows a young couple trying to live God’s way but that doesn’t mean everything always goes right. In fact sometimes they go from bad to worse before they get better. Occasionally the dialogue sounded a little forced to me. But that could be an age group difference. Even though I enjoyed this novel, it is probably better suited to young adults, particularly if they are Christian have an interest in learning more of God. Some of the secondary characters were interesting. On the whole this was an entertaining read, even though I thought the end was perhaps a trifle predictable.
There was something about the CHRISTY MILLER, SIERRA JENSEN, CHRISTY & TODD: THE COLLEGE YEARS, and KATIE WELDON series that just drew me in. I loved going back into their world; and I felt like Christy, Todd, and their friends were somehow my friends. So you can guess how thrilled I was when I heard Robin Jones Gunn was writing CHRISTY & TODD: THE MARRIED YEARS!! Christy and Todd forever! <3 *grins*
Forever With You, Book One in CHRISTY & TODD: THE MARRIED YEARS series, starts out with Christy waiting to tell Todd some important news. Todd Spencer is a youth pastor, and Christy loves being his wife and making their little apartment a home. But all things are about to change. Journey with this sweet couple through married life and up and downs in the ministry ... fall in love with their stories all over again!
I must admit, I didn't much like a good chunk of this book. It was a bit depressing, and left me feeling a little down, and annoyed, for some reason! Annoyed with Christy, then annoyed with Todd. For all the talk about their hearts being connected, they didn't seem very connected in the beginning of Forever With You. They didn't communicate very well ... tell each other what they were thinking. So for awhile, it was looking like a pretty sorry existence for them.
But somewhere along the line, things looked up. Not necessarily in the story, but in Christy and Todd's hearts. Our dear characters grew, and learned, and leaned on God.
And I fell in love with Christy and Todd, and their friends, and stories all over again!! ^_^ It was just so beautiful. Their walk with God. Their walk closer to each other. The precious, soul-deep memories made with true friends. The nearness of God. I think I struggled and grew with Christy and Todd a little in this book!
It was lovely to not only reunite with our forever couple, but also Doug, Tracey, David, Rick, Bob, Marti and a few others. We didn't actually reunite with Katie (over in Africa), but Christy did skype with her! *grins* I'm excited for the wedding promised to come in the next book! How wonderful to see how each character has grown and where they have gone. And not to mention, to meet Baby Daniel! <3 How far Christy and all her teenage friends have come - through the grace of God!
So yes, the faith theme ... beautiful. By the end, it was so deep and meaningful; very much touched my soul. I was stirred and encouraged by the message brought across. God is so good and faithful! I love when a novel brings that truth across! Amazing job, Robin Jones Gunn!!
The romance ... Christy and Todd are a happily married young couple. And in spite of this being a story where the main character is married, the author did not write sensual scenes! There were some sweet, deep, "lovey", slightly passionate moments, but I feel Robin did a good job of keeping it clean and the married couple's private times to themselves! So that was appreciated! *smiles* This series still has a feeling of being written for teens, so I would say about sixteen and up, perhaps.
Anyway, overall, just a rich beginning to this exciting, new series. Raw. Real. Poignant. Tender. Beautiful. Faith-filled. And joy! I can feel the joy! I am so looking forward to reading Home of our Hearts!
What a wonderful summer retreat. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Christy and Todd. Isn't it a joy when you turn the last page and you sit back as if you have just finished a Thanksgiving meal. Completely satisfied... smiling... and feeling as if all is right in your world.
To begin your visit you must know that it has already been two years since you attended their wedding. Married life is shaping into that period of challenges, changing expectations, and realizing that life isn't always following "your" outline. Christy has those moments when, as a wife, she struggles to follow Todd's lead. Todd has those moments for discerning what will be best for them, their future, and God's plan. With every decision there is a waiting period, one in which while waiting on the Lord to confirm your next step you must rely on scripture passages and your family or friends to pray with you. So as Christy and Todd walk through some tough times, we witness the power of a faith born and modeled in a very realistic scenario for so many married couples.
The strength of these characters is their natural "faith" in God's word, His ability to provide, and His plan/will for their lives. This type of strength endures due to the desire to walk out the challenges with prayer. Standing together for an answer to prayer. Being willing to be patient, loving, and supportive of each other in times of struggles. It is so refreshing to read stories in which the characters are so well faceted that you are comfortable with where the story line is going (joyously, with sorrow, or with trepidation) you trust the author's purpose.
Any of us who have survived those first five years of marriage can stand united with a witness that the road ahead will get better, that there will be joy, and that each season of life will work itself out as long as there is patience and love (1 Corinthians 13:4).
Christy and Todd is an ongoing series. Many of us have read and enjoyed their meeting, their high school years, their college ups and downs, and finally the celebration of their wedding. Robin has not disappointed her fans, this book is all about hope and strength. The storyline is so well woven between these young lives... their needs, their hopes, their foundation of friends, and their family support that you enjoy observing as their lives together begin to unfold. We are given the assurance that every season of marriage will be forth coming and that there will be so many moments to add to our Christy and Todd scrapbook.
This book is the continuing story after Christy and Todd:The College Years, which I actually didn't read. BUT, I didn't feel like I was missing something so this can be read without the college years.
Okay, now on to the review. :-)
If you are sensitive to a bit of romance or are a little younger, this book would probably be just a bit too much for you......It is the married years, after all...BUT, if you are good with it, the romantic moments are appropriately written so it's nothing without innocence.
As for the other parts, it was so great! I zoomed through this book, and was actually pretty surprised with how this was plotted. There was a lot going on here, with several great plot twists.
Christy has several God-moments in this story..... Moments when her heart is softened, her mind is changed or God shows her something amazing....
Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed was the "forever friend reunion" that we kind of got, plus, the last few chapters of the book were the greatest and sweetest thing ever!
Lastly, the thing that seperates Christy and Todd from a lot of fictional newlyweds, is the fact that their life isn't always romantic and lovely and perfect...And Robin Gunn doesn't try to portray it isas perfect either! God puts the couple in some major trials at the first couple years of their marriage, and the Spencer's came out of it the better.
Overall, this book wasn't fluffy and perfect and romantic, there was a LOT of rough scenes with financial and housing issues, but I could see God in Christy & Todd's relationship...And that was the most beautiful thing.
In anticipation of Robin Jones Gunn’s newest book, I’ve been re-reading the entire Christy Miller series over the past month. I enjoyed catching up with some old friends and even found a few books (Katie Weldon series) I had somehow missed. I grew up with Christy, Todd, Katie, Rick, Doug, and Tracy and they all show up in Forever with You.
Christy and Todd have now been married for a year and a half and they are being severely tested as individuals and as a couple. Christy has some news to share with Todd, but his news shakes her to her core. Their forever friends, Christy’s circle of sanity, are no longer close and the couple now has to navigate adulthood together. Will the two of them be able to come out the other side of their dark place with a stronger faith and greater love, or will all of their dreams lie shattered?
I read this book in one sitting, staying up way too late on a work night to finish it, but I could not put it down. Christy and Todd are better versions of their teenage selves, and I still felt a kinship with them. It’s nice to read a book about what happens after marriage. So many books today end at the engagement or the wedding, but most people know that marriage is hard (even those of us who aren’t married). Couples have to communicate, encourage each other, and support each other during difficult times. That’s exactly why Christy and Todd have always been so real to Gunn’s readers.
Forever With You was an amazing installment to Christy and Todd’s story. Christy and Todd have been married for almost two years. And in a few months, everything they’ve known is flipped upside down. Christy has news for Todd, but she’s surprised when Todd does not react the way she had hoped. Soon trouble arises and the couple navigates to Newport Beach where Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob join the story.
While they’re in Newport Beach, Todd’s dad requests help to renovate his home where everything is a mess. The time in which Christy and Todd find themselves is troubling, but through it they learn to put their faith in God. For them at times, that seems to be hard. The verses and references used by Ms. Gunn really help to show what the couple is going through, and the kind of help they need from God.
This story was awesome! All in all this was a wonderful installment and I cannot wait for the ones that follow. Although I have not read all of the Christy and Todd series, I was able to follow the storyline easily and it has made me want to go back and read the entire series. I have read many of Ms. Gunn’s books and have loved every one of them. She has once again written a must-read.
I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
I plowed through Forever With You and Home of Our Hearts. They were impossible to put down, even though they had their share of cheesy moments and the same things I disliked about the other series. Even though she can get heavy-handed with complementarianism, purity culture, and gender roles. Even though I don't know anyone who talks about God the way Christy, Todd, & Company do. Even though dear RJG doesn't use the word "sex" (due to the publisher?) when writing about married sex. This made me giggle when reading the few scenes which address Todd and Christy's marital bliss. What else can you do after reading a line about their "rainy, romantic, robust Sunday evening"?
I read the Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen books back in high school, and have been waiting patiently for this book for what seems like forever. Reading it was like visiting with old friends. A little awkward at first. But a few chapters in, it was like no time had passed, picking up right where you left off. And them staying up till 1 am to finish and write a review. Thanks, Robin, for creating characters and stories that are more than just a good book--they're Forever Friends.
Summary (from Amazon): When Christy Miller met Todd Spencer the summer she turned fifteen she only dreamed that theirs would be a forever love.
As Christy and Todd''s relationship is radically altered will they continue to drift apart? Or will they come through the major shifts with a deeper love for each other and the One who brought them together in the first place?
My Thoughts: I have loved the Christy Miller books from the time that I was introduced to them while I was in junior high. I've followed Christy over the years as she grew up. So needless to say, when I heard that Robin was writing a series about Christy and Todd and their married life, I was beyond thrilled. Because these characters are old friends of mine.
When I finally got my hands on a copy of this first book in the series, everything in me screamed to immediately dive into it. Yet I forced myself to wait. I had review copies I needed to finish, things going on in both my business and work. I wanted to be able to truly enjoy this book. So I waited. And waited. Until a couple of weeks ago when I was tired, emotionally exhausted, and wanting to read something that I could read for pleasure and not because I had to. So I picked up the book.
Immediately, I was welcomed back into Christy's world as if no time had gone by at all. For those of you new to the Christy books, I highly recommend reading them in order (Christy Miller Series, Sierra Jensen Series, Christy & Todd the College Years, Christy's Diary, Katie Weldon Series, Love Finds You in Sunset Beach Hawaii, and then this one). This book picks up where the fourth Katie book ends.
Christy and Todd have both matured from the time I met them as teens. It was fun to see them struggling to make ends meet. I loved them in these new roles. I loved getting to catch back up with Uncle Bob and Aunt Marti. I also loved how they each have grown so much in their faith. And the way that they have learned to trust God in so many different ways now.
Can you tell I loved this book? I did. And I'm eagerly awaiting the next one in the series.
I read this book for pure pleasure. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Robin Jones Gunn, Christy Miller, contemporary fiction, Becky Wade, young adult
I first met Christy Miller when I was in middle school, I think. As a young teen, Robin Jones Gunn's series made a huge impression on me. I loved the faith, relationships, themes... I read them multiple times and have always fondly remembered these characters. I've read both of the spin-off series (Sienna Jensen and Katie Weldon) and Christy & Todd: The College Years - so I totally freaked out when I found out Gunn was writing a series about their married life.
This was a much sadder read than I'd anticipated. Christy and Todd face a lot of struggles as newlyweds - job loss, moving, conflict with their church family, and miscommunication. I appreciate that they don't have perfect lives or perfect responses to difficult situations, but I still felt a bit distanced from this book. In fact, if I was evaluating this book apart from my history with the series, I'm not sure I would have even finished reading it. It was just so cheesy! Were the books always like that, and I just didn't see it when I was younger? I'm not sure, but I was a little sad to realize that I have, in a way, outgrown these characters.
I know I'll finish the series because Christy was such a huge part of my reading life growing up, but I've tempered my enthusiasm moving forward. I'm glad to catch up with the characters, but I do wonder if things would have been best left to my imagination.
I do my reviews as a letter, which is why they are written like this.
Dear Robin Jones Gunn,
It's always so nice to be reunited with Christy and Todd! They are some of my favorite fictional characters. This story in particular was a very stretching one, because Todd and Christy had so much change happen in their lives. I'd never really thought through what it would be like to be in the situation they were in, but obviously it had to be really straining. They both grew as characters, in their faith in God, which was really nice to see. Their marriage seemed really happy, but just a tad bit unrealistic. They hardly ever were at odds. Their affection for each other was written just right. It was appropriate but also sweet. The writing was well done. The only thing that bugged me was the occasional typo. But none of those really got in the way of the story. I read this two years ago for the first time (I had written a review here but I accidentally deleted it). I liked it a little more the first time around, but I still like this book. And it's still one of my favorites because of the memories I have of Christy Miller and her gang. Thank you for giving us another beautiful story. I look forward to reading more.
As a girl who related to Christy a LOT as a teenager and "grew up with her," I was excited to check in on our friends -- Christy, Todd, the entire gang actually. I've missed them, and I was more than up for a nostalgia trip back to their world.
And I appreciated the realistic look at both early married life and life in ministry. The CM series tackled hard issues from book one, and it was nice to see that pattern continue. Watching Christy and Todd struggle together didn't take the shine off their love story for me because that's what they've always done, and what I've always wanted for them -- life together.
However, there were canon inconsistencies that disappointed me. Several times Christy has realizations about herself or other characters (David, Marti) for the first time even though we've seen those realizations before, earlier in the series. Hence my three-star rating.
Alternate title: Christy & Todd: [Stuff] Gets Real
It wasn't a masterpiece-- some choppy editing, run-on sentences, and heavy-handed messages worked their way in. But I went in expecting another round of our favorite couple skipping their way over minor challenges. And then probably going to Maui. Again. Instead, I read a fairly honest portrayal of the suckiness of job loss, housing issues, and church strife. Christy and Todd react to these problems like... normal people. They get bitter, they panic, Todd plays video games and then has a mini-mental breakdown (gasp!), but they ride it out. And that was weirdly comforting. Because sometimes faith is less about maintaining a cheerful exterior, and more about gutting it out until things get better.
I like 95% convinced that Todd and Christy are real people living out in California right now. About in their early 40s with four kids.
I don't know how she does it but Robin makes these characters come alive. The stuff that they go through and the way the handle it is so real. The advice and comfort in this book were a balm to me as well as the characters.
I started this series when I was in high school. I was amazed when I learned that the author had continued this series to when, what at the time was my favourite couple got married. These books have taught me so much about life, love, spirituality and now about being married. This book is so uplifting and really embraces the meaning of struggle and sacrifice all while rising above and trusting God to lead you. I am sad knowing I only have two more books left!
This book was good. I enjoyed seeing Christy and Todd's faith grow through all of the hard times that they had in this book. I do have to say though that I feel like it was drawn out a little too much. It would have been better if there wasn't so much aggression in Christy and if their trials were a lot shorter. It was nice to have Doug and Tracy make an appearance as well as Rick. I really enjoyed the surprise ending. Can't wait to see what happens next!
AWW MY HEART!! Todd and Christy show truly what a good marriage should be and they show that in the ups and downs. It makes me want to hold out for a hero and to look forward to marriage someday. I love that Tracy, Doug, Nicole, Rick, David, Uncle Bob, and Aunt Marti still get woven into the story, as well as Katie and Eli. This series will forever be one of my favorites!!
This was a nostalgic read from my teen years I found at the thrift store. Quick and some problematic character traits in Christy and Todd! I’d love to discuss with someone! Haha good times.
4.5 - 5 stars I knew that when I put my laziness aside and I actually sat down to read Forever With You, I would read it in one sitting. I loved it more than I thought I was going to and I'll tell you why.
~The writing style was great as always. It was quick and easy to read. ~I was interested in the plot and cared what's going on surrounding the characters. ~With that, the characters were the main reason why I'm giving it such a high rating. ~Robin's intake of Christy's & Todd's marriage
I loved what Robin did with Christy's & Todd's marriage ~It showed you how spouses need to rely on each other when life gets tough. ~It also showed you that marriage isn't always easy breezy. ~It wasn't perfect, which I didn't even know I really wanted to see until things got real. ~I didn't want to see their marriage suffer obviously but I was a little worried that Robin would make their marriage seem perfect but she didn't. She not only put them through hardships but hardships that made their marriage be slightly tested and I appreciated that.
One of the reasons why I loved the characters so much in this book was because it seemed like they were more real.
Sometimes when Christy talked about Todd - or thought about him - it came across as she was raising him on a pedestal. I knew he wasn't perfect but in this story, it showed more of that side to him and I loved it. You get to see his weariness, his struggle, and you actually see him lose it; as bad as it seems, that was nice to read because Todd always seems with it.
As of Christy, her struggle to be patient and supportive as a wife was nice to read but also seeing her have an emotional meltdown was kinda endearing as well.
Katie was a little in this book and the parts that she was in, I enjoyed. I also liked seeing Tracy and Doug again, as well Christy's parents and little brother and of course her uncle Bob.
As weird as it sounds, character wise I really enjoyed Christy's aunt Marti. She's a big pain but we all have that one annoying family member that always has an opinion on everything. Because of that, it makes Christy seem more relatable. Some points that her aunt made did make sense and I slightly agreed with her on those points but I disagreed on Marti's execution. My point is annoying or not, I had more of an appreciation towards Marti, especially what she did in one of her last scenes in the book.
I absolutely love books that make me emotional and this for sure did. I cried halfway through this book (their emotions, my God) and I teared up at the ending. The God-thing that happens was amazing. Things like that happen in real life and that's another reason why I loved this story so much: IT WAS SO RELATABLE AND REAL.
The ending of this story was so beautiful and I really wish I bought the second book along with Forever With You because I want to jump into it! Can't wait to see what Robin has next :)
First off, I have not read any of the previous series that were about Christy and Todd. However, that did not hinder my reading enjoyment of Forever With You by Robin Jones Gunn. I did not feel lost within the story nor was there a lot of back story. Ms. Gunn seamlessly wrote her story so that even if you had not read any of the previous series, you would certainly find enjoyment in this new series about Christy and Todd in their married years. This book brought back a lot of memories for me of being just married for only a couple of years, no kids yet, living in an apartment, and trying to make things work financially. I really felt for Christy and Todd and all the struggles they were facing and that seemed to hit them all at once. I felt the emotions Christy was experiencing and wanting to tell her to hang in there, it will get better. It was interesting to read how this young couple really had to just let everything go to find the freedom to move on to the next step in their lives. If you have been a Christy and Todd fan through the years, or if this is your first Robin Jones Gunn book, either way it will be an enjoyable read. I received my review copy from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.
Well thanks Robin Jones Gunn. You've done it. I'm obsessed with Christy and Todd all over again.
Forever With You picks up where the Katie Weldon series finishes, but transitions over to catch up with Todd and Christy in the midst of marital bliss. However, that marital bliss doesn't last for long. A series of events lead to Todd and Christy questioning their lives and marriage in a totally new way and teaches them how to trust God in the midst of every circumstance.
This book is like eating a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies on a cozy afternoon while snuggled under a blanket. Something about Robin Jones Gunn's writing has always drawn me in and made it impossible for me to put the book down until I've gobbled up every last word. Every situation is so totally relatable. I feel like I know Christy as a friend, and completely relate to her emotions and reactions. I've read through all the series first as a teenager, then as a young single adult, and now I've picked up the married series as a young married woman. I found the story very powerful, and the truths about God and trusting in Him are ones that will stick with me, and can continue to help me as my husband and I continue on in our marriage. I highly recommend this book!
The Christy stories have always been so precious to me ♥️ This particular series is even more precious now that I’m also married and can identify with Christy in so many ways. She has always felt like a kindred spirit ever since I first started reading about her when I was thirteen. I love that Robin Jones Gunn made her so very human, and therefore, so relatable.
In this book, Todd and Christy’s world is shaken on its axis. Before they know what’s happening, they are both jobless and uncertain of what the future holds for them. But through it all, they remained optimistic and aware of who holds their future, knowing He would not abandon them in their time of need.
I love all of the scripture that Robin Jones Gunn includes in her books! Each verse is so precious and meaningful and helpful to encourage readers in their own lives and walks with the Lord. I also adore all of Todd’s analogies, which are so helpful in better understanding circumstances.
I wanted to like this one, I really did. I've been reading Christy and Todd since I was a teenager and was thrilled that we were getting more of their story. This book left me so depressed. I have loved ones in the ministry and know how difficult it can be at times. While accurate, I just don't want to read about it when I use books to escape. On the other hand, it felt good to catch up with everybody. It was a family reunion of sorts. I also enjoyed the house blessing. I'll have to remember that one. Towards the end, the book seemed to take a 360 from the struggles of newly married life and jumped right on the baby train. I could have used a more gradual transition. With that being said, I can't wait for the next chapter of the Christy and Todd saga
Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series was my introduction to Christian fiction as a teenager. I have grown up with Christy and her Forever Friends, and I couldn't wait to watch Christy and Todd Spencer as a married couple. What I really liked about Gunn's new Married Years series is that she doesn't sugar coat the story for the couples. Todd and Christy are really struggling financially, which weighs on Christy pretty heavily. It hit home with me. I'm tired to reading stories with married couples that seem so unrealistic. Plus, Gunn does a good job at picking right up where she left off with their story and invited me in to watch as they progressed in their relationship. I highly recommend this story for fans of Christy Miller and teens alike.
After waiting months to read this, I finally received it this past week. I cannot stress about how incredible this book book was. It was so well written and completely exceeded my expectations. I felt like their problems were dealt with in a realistic way - They weren't always happy but they had each other to help them through it. And in all honesty, I feel like to-be-married couples should read this. I would recommend reading the other books in the series before reading this one, but if you haven't this is a good stand alone series as well. Excited to be reading the next books in the series!
