A quirky and unexpected manga series exploring themes of grief and friendship in a heart-warming, light-hearted fantasy setting with plenty of humor, Merry Witches Life is a story about three women determined to learn magic and be the agents of their own happiness!
Join the Three Widows of Berlebagille in their second volume, full of stories of friendship, magic, and love!
Zoe, a witch who lost her beloved husband, has been hard at work learning magic with her best friend Shishka and a scarab beetle named Eliza. The widows hope to learn enough to bring their husbands back to life!
But life is anything but simple for the witches. Their human friend Noe has learned their secret. Zoe continues to fail at her magic studies. And a strange author and his “ghost friend” that no one can see have arrived in town to conduct interviews. Between new arrivals and old mysteries, one thing is certain. Something strange is happening in the village of Berlebagille...
My appreciation of this series is already starting to waver as it just meanders through little moments that are building toward a bigger story but in a very slow and indirect way.
I'm still committed to trying the next volume, but in the back of my mind I'm adding an "on probation" note.

I’ll get this out-of-the-way right away it gets an extra point because it has which isn’t it everybody who knows me is rolling their eyes at me but I can’t be helped. The artwork is nice and there’s a little bit more development of the story and what’s going on with supply I definitely like the characters are bit more flushed out and some of the new characters that are introduced in this volume are a little bit more interesting and have a little bit more depth to them and the ending is A lot more interesting than the first volume I’m kind of interested to see the where the story goes this was better than the first volume
Well, for a series with 'merry' in the title, there sure are some dark bits! It doesn't usually linger on them too much, but they're definitely there. In between those, it's a cute little series in many ways, but the mysteries keep piling up...
"First, adversity will grab them by the leg. Next, our grudges will lodge themselves in their minds. When our anger catches up to them... those criminals will face death."
I was so excited to jump into volume 2 of Merry Witches' Life! This volume immediately picks right back up to poor Noe discovering our girl's secret... their witches/bugs/something I'm still not quite sure what she is. LOL! But thankfully Noe is willing to keep their secret safe and I was so happy to see his friendship with Zoe and her friends grow in this volume!
More mysteries arise with the arrival of a newcomer to the village by the name of Alfred, as well as his ghost companion who only he can see. His appearance to the story brings on even more mysteries to the series, leaving me with even more questions that I'm dying to have answered!
Also, Clay's story is getting very interesting in this volume. I'm still uncertain what to think about Clay, but with all the mysteries surrounding him, I find him to be one of my favorite characters to read about in this series.
With Clay, Noe and Alfred being the 3 male characters who are forming acquaintances with the girls, a part of me hopes that they can form a different relationship with Zoe and her friends. Although they wish to resurrect their husbands from the dead, I think I would prefer if they didn't and decided to move on in life with someone else who could love them as their husbands once did.
Regardless, I am very very much anticipating the next volume in this series! (Which won't release until January 2026!!). After that crazy cliffhanger at the end, January cannot come fast enough!
3.5 For some reason my library had this one early without me realizing it. Anyway slightly better at points than the first volume, but still just a middle of the road series to me personally.
update: I wrote my original review with a few chapters/sequences left. The end of the manga definitely picks up, so I'll update my grade (originally 3 stars) and review. That said I don't know if I'll continue or not but the ending did have me a bit more interested in reading the third book whenever it comes out. However it's still a middle of the road series to me. The ending of this volume make it seem like the series is turning a bit darker and more mysterious than the first volume.
If I have any complaints it is that the series seem to swing between humourous, whimsy and cozy slice-of-life vibes to something more darker and mysterious and perhaps slightly more interesting in the long run. This occasionally makes it seem like the author was indecisive on which route to take with the narrative.
This second volume picks right up after the mini cliffhanger of episode one. It has more of the same slice of life feeling as the first volume, but this one introduces another set of characters. The mysterious deepens with this new character, and the witches progress on their journey of learning more magic. There is an ABRUPT 180 in tone in the last 1/3 of the book, which honestly shocked the hell out of me! The story is clearly maintaining the cover of "it's a cheerful slice of life about a group of witch friends!" but it's hiding something much darker underneath. This second volume now has me fully hooked into this series, and I'm super excited to read the third volume when I can get my hands on it!
5th manga for my 30 manga in 30 days: 2025 edition challenge
Volume 2 of Merry Witches' Life continues with all the fun and whimsy that it started with in volume 1. This volume adds more to the mysteries of Berlebagille with the introduction of multiple new characters and potential opposing histories of the town. Also, I believe romance is brewing for some of our characters!
I can not believe I have to wait until 2026 to read the next volume, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
