Wendy Pini
616 books399 followersWendy Pini is one-half of a husband and wife team with Richard Pini that created, most notably, the Elfquest series.
Wendy was born in California and adopted into the Fletcher Family in Santa Clara County. Early on, she developed as an artist and was the illustrator of her high school year book. She submitted samples of her artwork to Marvel Comics at 17 that were rejected.
Pini attended Pitzer College and received her B.A. in the Arts and joined the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society.
In 1972, she married Richard Pini and began illustrating science fiction magazines, including Galaxy, Galileo, and Worlds of If. In 1977, Richard and Wendy established a publishing company called Warp Graphics to publish their first Elfquest comic. Elfquest was self-published for 25 years and in 2003, licensed to DC Comics. The comic series has won several awards, including the Ed Aprill Award for Best Independent Comic, two Alley Awards, the Fantasy Festival Comic Book Awards for Best Alternative Comic, and the Golden Pen Award.
Wendy has illustrated other works, including Jonny Quest in 1986, Law and Chaos in 1987, and in 1989, two graphic novels of Beauty and the Beast. Recently in 2007, she completed a graphic novel entitled The Masque of Red Death.
Wendy has received several awards over the last four decades, including the San Diego Comic Convention Inkpot Award, the New York State Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, the Balrog Award for Best Artist, and was inducted into the Friends of Lulu Women Cartoonists Hall of Fame in 2002.

I`m biased. I read this thing for the first time when I was 11 yeas old, and it tore a lttle hole in my reality. If it had been published nowadays, with soMe and such, it would have a huge following, with their own nickname like "potterheads", Wolfreaders maybe? Or Cutterheads..More people should discover this wonderful, wonderful comic.

I first got into Elfquest as a young girl. My mom owned one issue and I must have read it at least fifty times. Impressed with the artwork and of course, the elves.
No, as an adult, I got my hands on at least the first 15 issues and I’m starting it from the beginning. I am loving it. The artwork is still as amazing as ever and the stories are fun.
The thing that does surprise me a bit is the attitude of the elves. They are so high and mighty. The moment they demand shelter, they are completely disrespectful of their hosts, desecrating a holy artefact and being surprised that the giants dump them in the desert. Honestly, you could have seen that one coming.

This has pleasantly surprised me, usually I am not one for fantasy but I always find myself drawn into a really good fantasy story. I’m not sure why it’s always a hard jump for me, maybe it’s an uncertainty I will be able to relate to the characters but so far this first issue has not disappointed. The art and color work is fantastic and the world created here is even better and a total shock to what I was imagining in the best possible way. This is a world of man when they exist as beasts, only for a storm to shatter the natural order and bring in an elvish castle which literally came down from the sky. The men approached the castle as the colorful beings that inhabited it stepped out into this new world, only to be filled with fear. They gave into this fear and it gave them strength as they massacred the castle, the elves finding that their magic doesn’t work in this savage world. The men took the castle as anyone who survived escaped into the woods. Is in the present day the elves have become their own warriors, surviving generations as they have neared to hunt and kill. And tonight we find that a tribe of men have captured one of their own as they have beaten and whipped the elf to sacrifice him. The rest of the tribe would not have that, they storm in with their swords and arrows drawn as they ride on wolf back. Their leader kills a man in the process and saves their friend, they do not jump to murder if necessary and that was his first time killing a human. But if it is to protect their own then blood would be shed.
But the men called for more blood to match their fallen soldier, and that night a wolf came to their leader to deliver a message of humans appearing around the woods where the elves hide with fire. They met the men outside the woods to try and convince them not to burn it down as the lack of food would cause everyone to starve, but the men only care about cleansing them from this world. As the fire is dropped one elf puts an arrow in the leader of the human tribe, but the fire spreads quickly and they are forced to flee. The l are takes them to the cavern of the trope where he calls on them to open the door. The doorkeeper unaware of the situation cranks the door open as the leader pops in and allows his people entry. The trolls do not take kind to visitors, especially as their caverns are filled with rich materials and they fear people stealing it. But the very blades the trolls forged for the elves in exchange for meats and other goods are now being used to compel them to bring the elf leader to the troll king. The two groups argue what is owed and how they have been friends on the past and how the elves need temporary help now. The king is not very helpful and ends up punching away the right hand man to the elf leader when he takes special interest in a magnetic stone, the stone is special to the trolls as they have found nothing else like it. This act of aggression angers the elf leader as he jumps on the troll kings stomach and puts a blade to his face…resolving the situation by chipping off a piece of the loadstone to give to his comrade. The elf leader then expresses he is simply looking for a new home for his tribe, so the king hurriedly orders his man to bring them to the tunnel of golden light. But the reaction of the other troll this is clearly a trap, but the promise of green peaceful woods far away from human influence is too great an offer for the elves to pass up. They follow the man and travel for days through the tunnels, singing their time away. Finally they reach the tunnel of golden light and the group is filled with hope, the troll refuses to go any further as the daylight is harmful. They keep one elf back with the troll in case it is a trap, but as the group heads out they find the bright sun and a wave of yellow sand across the land. It’s not exactly what was promised but they are forced to make do as behind them the man they left behind is tossed through as the tunnel collapses. Revenge for hurting the troll king’s pride. There is no turning back now, only an unfamiliar land. But that is nothing new to this group of elves.

The beginning of the Elfquest Saga. We have a rather uncommon view on the elves and a unfamilar setting in the stone age in contrast to the medievial world of your vanilla fantasy. In this first volume we learn who these elves are and what tragedy caused their journey that is the story of the original Elfquest serie. I enjoyed the reread.

Re-read. for the first time in english. The image are still so beautiful and the story still a great invitation to adventures. The only difficulty for me is that my first read of ElfQuest was with French translation of the Wolfriders names. But I'll adapt. Can't wait to read the rest.
