Gabrielle and Alex’s long wait for their baby son was almost over – only a few days until their little boy would be with them. Gabi had everything worked out – her birth plan was meticulous. Alex’s amusement and love knew no bounds – Gabi meant everything to him, as did Charli, his first born, and of course Charli and Adam’s daughter Bridget was the apple of everyone’s eye. The hand of fate; of magic would see things right.

But when that magic stopped working the family began to crack. Alex’s trust in fate was shattering and with the arrival from New York of Charli, she knew she had to be strong for her father, as he’d always been strong for her before…

Silver Dawn by Aussie author G.J. Walker-Smith is a continuation of the Wishes Series; of Charli and Adam, her father Alex and wife Gabi and their lives as they grow. This story is set over a short period, and mainly features Alex, Gabi and Charli. Silver Dawn is also an extremely heartbreaking and emotional story – a story of love, sadness, hope and of course, magic. I loved it as I have all the Wishes Series, and highly recommend it – but they need to be read in strict order to get the full appreciation of the characters and their lives.

Big thanks to G.J.for an ARC copy for review.

Have you ever read a book where it just reaches out and touches your soul. I know that may sound a little corny, but seriously this story did that to me. This novella showed everything from joy, laughter, sorrow, love, and hope. It was quite an emotional read and I will say thank goodness for waterproof mascara. Gemma continues to surprise and amaze me with each story she creates and her wonderful imagination is very inspiring.

Alex Blake is a wonderful man and an amazing father. He has always taught Charli to believe in the magic and what the universe tells her. But when an unexpected and dire situation occurs, now he's not sure of anything anymore. It was heart wrenching to see him so broken and his faith tested. But even with those hard moments there were the precious ones as well. A particularly special scene between Alex and his son that had turned my eyes into running faucets. Or seeing the incredible love that Alex and Gabi share.

"I love you, Alex," she whispered. "More than art and books."
Her declaration made me laugh. There was no greater achievement than being loved more than art and books.
I kissed her hand again. "I love you more than the ocean," I countered. ~ Gabi and Alex

Throughout this whole series one my favorite things has been the powerful bond between Alex and Charli. It was both heartbreaking and beautiful in this book. I loved watching her be strong for Alex and how she reminded him not to give up believing. She gives new wisdom to her dad that he always gave to her.

"Your giving me lots of what-ifs. Give me the truth. Tell me anything as long as it's true." Charlie smiled as if we didn't have a care in the world, and in that moment we didn't.
"I like it when you call me dad," I offered. "Even if it's accidental."
She shook her head, but the smile remained. "It's never accidental."
"Really."
"Never," she insisted, shifting the board to her other arm. "Sometimes I say it because I think you need to hear it. And sometimes it's just because I need to say it." ~ Charli and Alex

I loved every single thing about this story. It had it's heart pounding moments, but in the end it left my heart feeling happy and complete. This is definitely my favorite novella read of 2014.

I find myself at loss of words as to how to explain this book. It's amazing, it's heartfelt, it's honesty and it's emotional. More importantly though, I think it's GJ Walker-Smith's best book yet!

Silver Dawn is the continuation of Gabbi and Alex’s story in Sand Jewels. It’s set within the larger Wishes Series and takes place sometime between Storm Shells (book three) and Secret North (book four). It’s GJ Walker-Smith’s sixth published novel and quite possibly her most emotional and challenging one.

Whoever said that we’re never sent more than we can handle is a liar. I couldn’t handle the horror I’d be burdened with that morning

All Gabrielle Decarie has ever wanted was children of her own. So when her partner’s daughter (Charli) comes home pregnant and without the child’s father, she’s naturally pissed off. Even more so since it looks like Charli and Adam don’t want the child … a child that Gabrielle so desperately wants with every fibre of her being; a child that she thinks she is quite possibly destined never to have. That is until one day she does fall pregnant. This is the story of that pregnancy and what happens when its time to welcome her little bundle of joy into the world and things don’t exactly go to plan…

I’ve loved Alex ever since Saving Wishes. But what I’ve loved him more for is the way he acts towards those he loves, especially Charli. I’m close to my Father and yet I still find myself slightly envious of the relationship Charlie and Alex share. He’s her rock, her world, her everything. Even when she didn’t know it. But in this novel, Alex’s faith is tested and he starts to crumble with it.

In times of crisis, people look for meaning. Alex’s biggest problem was that he couldn’t find one. His whole faith had taken a pounding because the theory that bad things don’t happen to good people no longer rang true.

When Charli finds out she rushes back to Pipers Cove and picks up the pieces. Although she may be angry with Alex for the way he’s handling things (the lemon throwing scene anyone) she’s there to pick up the slack when Alex can’t.

I’ve always believed that Alex could fix the whole world when I needed him to, but my eyes have been opened in the most brutal of ways. He wasn’t quite that powerful.

Like Sand Jewels, Silver Dawn is a short and sweet novella. Unlike Sand Jewels however, Silver Dawn is emotional and traumatic and beautiful in it’s imperfections. That’s not to say the writing is imperfect, but rather the story line is not as happy as some of the other books. In fact the writing and story itself is honest, raw, emotional and heartfelt. And quite possibly the most true thing GJ Walker-Smith has ever written.

That’s not to say the entire story is weighed down in emotions. In between all the heavier moments, Walker-Smith has managed to seamlessly weave in her trademark whit and humour without making it seem forced or mocking the seriousness of the situation.

“Did Charlie have a lot of hair?”

“No,” I replied smiling. “She was bald until she was one – and bald again at three.” Gabrielle frowned, forcing me to elaborate. “Chewing gum.” I shook my head. “Terrible ordeal.”

I also loved that while Charlie was holding the forte down in Pipers Cove, Adam was supporting her from New York with their daughter Bridget. It brought a smile to my face being able to see how much he’s grown, even from afar.

“I love you, Adam,” I declared. “And your ugly tie.”

His dark chuckle was quiet and low. “You’re beautiful,” he told me. “Now go to sleep or I’ll mute you.”

Silver Dawn is a book I will carry in my heart for years to come. The pain and feelings that it evoked not only in the characters but in myself was soul crushing and a the same time indescribable and if that’s not the mark of a true story teller, I don’t know what is. Once again I’m in awe of GJ Walker-Smith’s imagination and the power of her writing.

Thanks go to get author for the arc.

EDITED: It’s been 4 years since I’ve read this emotional novel and it still brings me to tears with all that happens in a short time at The Cove. I didn’t think my love for Alex could be any stronger, but I’m proved wrong with this re read. Even though he was a little lost, and he was way out of his depth, he just needed to find the magic within the Wishes. 🐢

GJ Walker-Smith has just released another beautiful book in the Wishes Series.
This one is called Silver Dawn and it's a novella telling us more about Alex and Gabi, Dad Extraordinaire and the Parisienne Princess.

The book takes you on a roller coaster of a ride with the emotional tale of the birth of their son.

I am always happy when GJ has a new book, I know that I will never be disappointed. And this is why I have pre-ordered Star Promise due December 20th, just in time for Christmas!

I really enjoyed getting to know Alex better, he is a strong character that has his patience tested in this book. He is not even sure he believes in magic anymore.

We get to hear about the other characters at Pipers Cove too, which is always entertaining.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has read others in this series, or to anyone who enjoys a epic tale with surmountable odds.

GJ captured my heart with these characters over a year ago when I read the first book in this series, Saving Wishes. I have waited anxiously for each new release and she never disappoints me.

I adore Alex, he is a true gent with a heart of gold. There is nothing he wouldn't do for the ones he loves. I was so happy to be back when I heard we were getting more Alex and Gabi.

description

During this novella Alex's faith in the magic he taught Charli over the years fails him when he needs it most.

description

Charli arrives back where it all started ready to meet her little brother but she gets more than
she bargained for, she has to hold Alex together. Like he has done for her many times over the years.

description

I have always felt loved the relationship between Charli and Alex. The reversal of roles to a degree make it all the more beautiful in this book. Alex really struggles in this book, he's no longer the down to earth Aussie surfer, he's an emotional mess.

This novella had me in tears numerous times, sad and happy tears. I love the magic GJ weaves into her books, she is one of those rare gem's of an author, that once you find her books you will never want to miss them.

The author provided an ARC. This is an honest review.

This book finds Alex and Gabi moving into a new phase in their lives, towards the birth of their long awaited baby. Life ambles along for Gabi at a slower pace as her body restricts her normally focused pace in life. As the time of birth approaches, they find themselves in a situation that changes life forever and neither of them are ready to deal with it. Charli drops everything to be there with them.

This review is difficult to write, because I need to write without spoilers and I am bursting with lines that had a profound effect on me. This novella is different to the other Wishes books. It is true to the series, but the emotions in this book are so strong that it takes you on a journey which makes you adore these characters even more. The relationship between Alex and Charli is explored in a new light. Of course, no GJ Walker-Smith book would be complete without a fairy's tale and this one is 'special'. GJ's ability to write the sadness in this book but still be able to instil humour into that dark place is quite brilliant.

Oh, and when you get to 'The End' please just pause and take in that last paragraph because it sums up what an extraordinarily talented writer GJ Walker-Smith is. This now goes to the top of the list as being my favourite in the series.

I am without a doubt a fan of GJ Walker-Smith (like boarder-line stalker ;) ) but i love ALL her books. And Silver Dawn did not disappoint!!

if you want a book that is going to make you "ugly" cry... then this is it... but also, you will love Alex and Gabi's story. You will also love the characters that feature in Silver Dawn, there will be some laughs and there will be some tears.. but at the end... you will want more...

i don't like spoilers... so you aren't getting any from me...but a simple READ IT will suffice...

if i could give a book more stars - this whole series would get the maximum available!!!!!

My recommendation before you read this book, is to read Saving Wishes, Second Hearts, Storm Shells, Secret North, and Sand Jewels - the beginning of Alex and Gabi's story.

Grab the tissues!!!

What an emotional book! This book really grabbed my heart. Up until the very end, I wasn’t sure how this novella was going to play out. It’s nice to see the back stories and how the other characters are doing. It lets us know in the main books why the characters do what they do and say what they say. I needed this book because I needed some of Alex and Gabi. This book did not disappoint.

Okay, with the synopsis out of the way I can say that I got the copy as an ARC and as if there are ever any other ways than giving an honest review... Anyways, here's my honest review.

I was scared of that book, I really was, especially because some teaser sounded incredibly sad, but for me the book started out amazing since there was a little fairy dedicated to me!!

Besides the fact that she 'has special needs' I can say that this is the most amazing thing ever! Thank you so so much, you have no idea how much that means to me...
About the rest... Of course, it was emotionally draining from there. Walker-Smith has infinite passion to draw the sad and yet incredibly beautiful scenes out until you are sure that nothing ever can piece your heart back together. Seeing Alex go through a struggle like, through heartbreak like that actually made me feel right along with him.

Books that grip you like that are rare... Especially novellas because it's an art to put so much emotion into a few little pages without being a full out cliché.
Walker-Smith exceeds - as always - all expectations concerning her greatness. She touches your from head to toe, heart to soul, inside and out. One of these days I want to ask her how she manages to make my heart bleed with the simply words "He has rockstar hair".

What I loved most about that book though was seeing Alex and Charli back together. It's hard to explain what it is about those two, but they are everything to me. Seeing them again was like seeing a friend I hadn't met in years and still realize I don't love him or her any less.
It's amazing how Charli has grown in the course of the series, and how she still can be Alex' litte girl when at the same time being a great woman.

What is left to say? Easy. It broke my heard closing that virtual book and knowing that I had to leave my friends another time. I know as well though that I'll be back with them as long as they'll keep coming.

The Wishes-Series continues to shape me as a person because every time I read another page, I aspire to be a little more like Charli - stronger, better and yet my unique kind of crazy.

And, of course, there is no need to point that out again, but OMG, I am so much in love with Alex, I don't know where to put that!!! He'll be my most favorite book boyfriend of all times. Ever.

Because he was my true first always and first forever.

I was so unbelievably unprepared for this story.

I've been pretty constant in my enjoyment of Walker-Smith's Wishes series; meaning I found them fun and sweet but ultimately light and easy. But SILVER DAWN changed everything. I'm wrecked. I spent 98% of the time reading each word through a veil of tears with my emotions caught in my throat. I couldn't know how it would all turn out and I refuse to even hint at the ending in this review.

I liked the original novella starring Alex & Gabi, SAND JEWELS, but felt a little like it was mostly superfluous information I could have done without. I would've liked to have much more of the story post-Adam's arrival to Piper's Cove and instead we only had a tease of it. Whereas this installment of the couple in question, fastforwarded five years, prominently featuring a Charli appearance, was incredible and made me appreciate their relationship far more than the telling of it's beginning. It was heartbreaking. Sweet. Brutal. But, in true Walker-Smith fashion, magic.

As an added treat I also couldn't help but notice some familiar names from the Walker-Smith fan community and those scenes accounted for part of the 2% of the time I wasn't crying. Also part of that percentile were some other familiar names (fictional) and faces. I've said it before and I'll say it again : Walker-Smith outdoes herself with her secondary characters. Especially their story arcs. The person they were two books, or even only one book, before does not guarantee how they'll be in the next. Each one changes, grows, even the most ridiculous ones (ie, Wade). This could have been a short simple story of the birth of Alex and Gabi's child, the struggles they face and the question as to whether or not they come out the other side. Instead it was so much more.

Though this is the first in the series to reach my own personal top-shelf favourite, it can't be said that Walker-Smith doesn't constantly craft a wonderful tale. Each is their own little piece of magic. Not just for the characters.. but for us, too.

This is Alex and Gabbis story as they prepare for the arrival of their baby.
This could be a stand alone book – but you will gain so much more from it if you have read the others in this brilliant series.

The emotional heart strings it pulls are as strong as you might expect from a full length book – Joy, Love, hope and heartache – I shed tears more than once!
Really well written, and I’m going to admit that I think this novel is the best in the series so far
This would be the first Novella I’ve read that I can honestly say I loved! (generally not a fan of them) I’d recommend reading Silver Dawn to everyone.

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of Silver Dawn by Mrs GJ Walker-Smith.

Im a huge fan of GJ Walker-Smith, and I cant explain how beautifully written this book and the deep emotions that blooms within me when I read this. I was so speechless with every moments of this book. This novella shows a different side of Alex and i love this side of him. I have come to love Gabi more in this book, she shows the wonders of being a mother and Charli, loving how beautifully she have grown. All in all, Its just perfect read. ❤️

Very good. I wasn't sure we'd get a happy ending out of this one.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“My children are rule breakers, even before they’re born.”

“Why are you making him wear a hat?” I asked. “He has rock star hair. He should be showing it off.”

“Whatever I’d taught my daughter over the years would forever pale in comparison to the things I’d learned from her. I hadn’t made Charli. She’d made me.”

Hooray, another Alex and Gabi story! It's great to catch up with these two again. Alex and Gabi finally welcome their very own baby into the world. But when things don't go to plan, it throws Alex for six. Charli to the rescue! Alex is lovely as always. These books never, ever disappoint me.

Ugh! Can someone just rip my heart out right now? My heart is in pieces. This book was so sad and heartbreaking.

Alex and Gabrielle have waited a very long time to have a baby and it should be a time of happiness, joy and celebration. However, things just don't always go as planned.

Although this was such a heartbreaking story it was still very well written. From the beginning I was an instant fan of Alex and fell hard for his character because he was just so strong, confident and an amazing father. In this story he starts to lose his way and it truly broke my heart. I wanted to reach into my kindle and just embrace him! I felt his pain and his heartache. His love for Gabrielle, if it wasn't obvious before, it certainly showed how strong it truly was in this story.

Charli makes a surprise visit to come see her brother but what she wasn't prepared to see her father fall apart. Alex has always been there for Charli and she's determined this time around to keep him from losing all hope and to find his way back to magic.

Alex struggles with the turns of events in his life at the moment and is reaching his breaking point.

What happens when you start to lose hope?

Even worse, What happens when you start to lose faith in magic?

G.J. Walker-Smith has done such an amazing job in this series. With every book she pulls you in and you become more and more consumed by these characters and their stories of struggles, insecurities, hope, magic and love.

Oh be still my heart. I can't even find the words to describe how good this book is. If you've read any of the books in the Wishes Series then you most likely understand this. GJ Walker-Smith writes books that are an indescribable kind of amazing. My heart always feels lighter and my outlook on life better, it usually takes days to wipe the cheesy grin off my face. I fall more in love with these characters with each book and I honestly miss them after I've finished. I don't want to say much about Silver Dawn, spoilers would be very easy. Just know that while this book is a bit short, its a whole lot of greatness. If you haven't started the Wishes Series, you're seriously missing out and should start it immediately. I am now patiently awaiting the release of Star Promise. :D

I am finally able to write this review almost a year after I read this book. This book is wonderful. It is filled with emotion and will make you ugly cry! I took a long time to write this review because her writing is very true. I and a number of women that I know went through birth experiences like Gabi does. I vividly remember my newborn baby being brought to me while I was lying in a Coronary Care Unit bed. I have many friends who have pictures of themselves with their babies lying next to them while they were on ventilators. I thank the author for dealing with this subject so honestly and with such depth of feeling. Living it and watching loved ones going through this is horrible so it was refreshing to read an account where the impacts are not brushed aside. This is a book that is not to be missed!

One of my favorite things about reading Silver Dawn was that it was honest and genuinely felt real. There was no hiding any emotions. Through Alex's mind, he's putting his wants first because he feels like he's about to lose it (almost) all. Here comes Charli, and throughout all the books I've loved seeing how much she's grown, and yet stayed true to the things of her heart, but she really pulls through for Alex. Even when Alex has always been the one to catch her when she fell, it was like a two way promise for them. She came to let him know that if he were to fall, Charli would be there to catch Alex too. I can't wait for Star Promise, I'm going crazy waiting for December to come around!!!

The absolute best in the bunch. I mean... Alex. Just wonderful and realistic and moving and heartbreaking. I would've liked to have gotten some Gabrielle POV early on, but beggars can't be choosers.

Alex is a favorite of mine... and being a 30-something old reader, it's fantastic when a great series highlights someone of that generation and not make them so ancient sounding (as is the case in most YA and New Adult novels, sadly.)

But, as I said in a previous review for a previous book... some reflection and comparison of Charli's mother would have been appropriate. Definitely missed.

Beautiful story.

Tragically beautiful

Another value add novella for The Wishes series.

Jack's entry into the world was an eventful one tipping everyone off axis. I appreciated the not so rosy side of childbirth this story portrayed.

Alex still remains my favourite of the male charters in this series although I was worried he was going to lose his shine for a while there.

How is it possible to love characters so much?

Sometimes when authors write books, you love the stories for different reasons. But for me, it's always about the characters, how they interact with each other and whether I would want to know them in real life. I couldnt be more in love with the Blakes and Decaries if I tried!! Every single one of them.

Maybe it's the Aussie in me but Alex and Charli are so authentic, the things they say and how they say it, feels real to me. Im not sure if Im making sense, but the trueness makes me love them more.

I can see this series of books as a series on Netflix, who's working on that? Someone should be!

Lastly, and completely for the benefits of a community announcement. Do not start this book without tissues, if you don't need them then you're probably not human and I don't think we can be friends.
