Academy of the Wicked : Year One

Rate this book
I never thought I'd willingly walk into the dragon's den, but here I am—Gwenivere, the only girl stupid enough to infiltrate the infamous Wicked Academy.

Oh, and did I mention I'm a hybrid? Part vampire, part witch, and now, part boy... at least as far as anyone here knows.

Infiltrating the all-male Wicked Academy wasn't my smartest move.
I thought I was prepared for anything.
Turns out, I wasn't ready for the vicious bullying, the cutthroat classes, or the three devastatingly handsome paranormal princes who've made tormenting me their new favorite hobby.

Damien, the Vampire Prince with his seductive smirk that promises trouble and temptation.
Nikolai, the Dark Fae Prince whose charm is as deadly as any weapon.
And Cassius...the rare Duskwalker Prince...enigmatic, dangerous, and far too perceptive for my liking.

They started as my tormentors, but as the weeks pass, I'm not sure what they are anymore.
Enemies? Allies? Something... more?

They think they can break me.
I'll show them what happens when you back a witch-vampire hybrid into a corner.
Because in the hallowed halls of Wicked Academy, the most dangerous player might be the one they never saw coming.

Welcome to the Paranormal World of Wicked Elites! The 100,000-word Steamy Academy Romance is where magic crackles, deception is an art form, and the line between hate and love is as thin as a vampire's fang. Think you can keep up? Brace yourself, for this is a one way ride, you don't want to miss!

So, the thing that interested me the most was the thrope about gender bender in an academy, and the secret of MC being a girl lasted a whooping... 4 pages. Yep, bye

Attempted to dip my toe back into one of my favorite genres and this is what I get. This was soooo hard to read. The writing was all over the place and exhausting.

This read like:
Trauma dump
I’m horny
I’m a badass like no other badass
I’m insecure and confused
I’m horny
I’m powerful no one knows all of my awesomeness
I’m damaged and broken
Someone understands me
I’m powerful and ready

If you remove the ridiculous amount of internal dialogue you would have a book that’s maybe ten pages long. It has some decent ideas but the trauma dumping and bond lust was 90% of the book. I’m just surprised I finished it

This was very obviously rushed. The protagonist infiltrates the school but very soon catches the attention of a group of boys who hate her at first but also feel attracted to her.

Then, there are mate bonds that aren't explained enough.

The premise was interesting but I would have prefered if the book centered more in the story rather than the romantic relationships and smut.

How do I say this tactfully?

This was the literary equivalent of premature ejaculation. Just flagrantly ridiculous with its overwhelmingly flowery prose, as if the cloying assault of whimsical adjectives could somehow make up for the author's ineptitude in building an actual story.

Right off the mark, the author ditches any attempt at maintaining the "I'm a woman disguised as a man" setup. And then literally within a handful of pages, we're sprayed with a firehose of how unique and powerful and awe-inspiring and shocking and jaw-droppingly-unexpected and beautiful and important and singular and WHATTHEFUCKEVER the FMC is. Not even an attempt at a crescendo, just a jarring symbol crash before we can even get settled in.

Then BOOM, another symbol crash as she engages with one of the MMCs. Ooooooh aaaaaah, look at our insane chemistry and stars aligning and page upon page of flowery word vomit as if that's the key to convincing us that the scene isn't just some awkward, zero to bang-it-out that would put cornhub to shame.

To be fair, I quit rather early in at 71 pages, but each of those pages was hard won and full of aggravation. Not only is everything told to the reader, but the author's limited adjective choice means that we are veritably harangued with "ancient", "dark", "cold", and an assortment of other similar selections intended to imbue a sense of primordial otherworldliness, but instead is so overblown that it might as well be satire.

And finally, I couldn't possibly stomach an entire book of Gwen, who is written to be some quirky, snarky, badass outcast... but, like, if a teenager on TikTok wrote her. In other words an annoying, juvenile, low-brow character who describes other women as bitches and whores because they think it makes them cool.

Wowwwwww okayyyyyyy totally didn’t see that ending happening! Omg okay on to the next in series! This legit has all the feels!!!! Enjoyed this & didn’t see some twists! Love the dialogue super witty & steamy!!!!! No grammatical errors which is always a plus! The story flowed nicely!!!! Definitely can sense the connection loved that! Props to the author for creating such realistic & engaging characters & plot!! The chemistry between our main characters was great more like insta love/lust!!!! Wanted more about that & some more background details, but overall did love this! Especially loved the forbidden romance trope!! Possesive male alpha & his love eeekkkssss :) definitely fun escapism! Can’t wait to read the next in this series!!!!

ok, could use more editing

I was really intrigued and excited to read this, but it was way too convoluted to get a grasp on. It started out good, and then quickly you realize you’re basically reading the same thoughts and dialogue over and over in too many words. Then, we way too quickly get drawn into very big picture stuff, like date and prophecy, and the language is very meta, without a good physical description of anything, and soon I’m halfway through the book and only like half a day has passed in the story, and we’re in this huge fight where like a thousand students die? Felt like the plot was being pushed way way too fast to make any sense, and apparently it’s taking place at an academy, but I’m 60% through the book, and the only academy type thing is the repeated obsessive descriptions about her uniform? Also the randomly bold lines kept throwing me off, it didn’t make any sense to have them there. Overall, the book just felt like the big fate and prophecy stuff was being pushed wayyyy too hard and fast, and we weren’t getting any reality. Not enough personality of the characters, or dialogue, or intro to this supposed “academy”.

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This is a 4.5/5 on my trauma scale- it missed a five due to not being a life threatening situation, but that ending was very much a “what the heck?” moment and I personally am anxious to know more! Alas, as of mid February 2025, book two isn’t yet out, so consider yourself warned!

Disguised as a male to enter Wicked Academy, Gwenivere hopes to find the artifact that can heal her sister.
Instead she finds herself bonded to a powerful supernatural Prince, and enrolled in the academy trials.
It’s not called Wicked Academy for nothing though, and Gwenovere will have to work hard to make sure she isn’t exposed, and that she manages to survive the trials…

This is a fast paced story, with some very dark overtones, and some intriguing characters. There are also a couple of very steamy scenes, so if you like spice, keep reading!
The story quickly dives into things, but there is a very dark turn towards the end which changes the feeling of everything, and I admit I am intrigued.
I’m also mad at certain characters, who knew Gwenivere/Gabriel was emotionally compromised (she TOLD them she was bipolar), and when she spirals, they honestly don’t seem to notice! Yeah, I’m still mad!

Anyway, if you like complicated, twisty RH fantasy/Academy stories, with a little darkness and a lot of danger, then you’ll enjoy this book!

Personal Notes/Reminder for when the next book is out

>>>>Spoilers ahead, read at your own risk<<<<

Gwenivere is a natural born vampire-witch hybrid, but there is something hidden about her past.
She’s a twin, and her twin sister has been declining from magic loss, and is now in a magical coma.
She disguises herself as Gabriel, a male hybrid, to get into the academy, where she thinks a cure for her sister is.
She lands on the bed of Damien, a vampire with the potential to become a pure blood. I’m not sure if he remains relevant, and would personally like to see him pounded into the ground and stomped on. There’s a huge switch from seeing a scene from his PoV, to later him becoming the enemy, so is he relevant?
She meets Nikolai, a fae prince of immense power, and a jerk.
Cassius, a duskwalker with his own grim reaper shadows; he’s the first bonded, and Grim (his shadow creature) is cool. Not sure how much of Grim is real though! Things get steamy between them in the first few chapters.
Mortimer, one of the seven teachers that rule of the academy, nerd, unable to help due to his role at the academy. Not sure if he’s just a watcher or a potential mate.
She accidentally bonds to Cassius, and becomes a member of their group, ready to begin the trials the academy puts its students through.
The first trial is something that Gabriel is instrumental in making the first years pass in a victory for the first time in fifty years.
During the trial, she accidentally bonds to Nikolai (deliberate on his part), and things get steamy between them after she recovers, and after a face off with the creepy headmaster!
She is accepted into their group, but Damien leaves, leaving their group just shy of completing year one.
The rules of the academy are explained, there is a complicated point system, where everyone abuses everyone else to get points.
When Gabriel is left alone by Nikolai and Cassius to fend for himself, Gwenivere finds herself spirally into a trauma response.
She is saved from harming herself by an old friend Atticus, who was there in the past, brutally punishing all those who would harm her, before being imprisoned. Now, once more, Atticus helps out, he disguised himself and came to be with her. Vowing to help her punish the mates who neglected her in spite of their vows, Atticus becomes part of their team, and they move into year two.

Gripping and enrapturing. This book doesn't take time to warm up, it's off before the countdown has even begun, which is something I enjoyed. Nothing is worse than reading a sample, being intrigued but hoping the story picks up and then you download the book and it literally never picks up. One of the road bumps this story experienced was in the first intimate scene with Cassius. Reading that scene was similar to waiting in a really long line on a holiday when you forgot your headphones in the car. To say I was impatient for the next part of the book is putting it mildly. Another bump in the road was the power level scale. It seems some of the characters in this book are infinitely powerful, but you still have to compare the power of others to that scale. So how does that work? Idk and it seems like we'll find out more. It definitely confuses me tho because comparing infinity to a finite well of power is not how math works but I guess the limit does not exist as they say.

Overall I definitely enjoyed this book and I'm excited for the next one. I am excited to see the boys grovel as well! Ain't nothing better than femme fatale that can get her own revenge but has a loyal soldier to do her bidding and Atticus showed up at just the right moment for it. Gwen has all the makings of a "don't want to raise a hand cause they might chip a nail but will break all of them to spite their foes" type energy. Atticus is unknown, but with the way he showed Gwen so much care, I already love him. I'm really not certain if Damien will be a friend or foe in the end, his relationship with Nikolai makes it confusing if he's into women and since we only get one POV scene from him, we're even more in the dark. It's a switch up for me on which bondmate will break first, Nikolai is way older it seems than Cass and Damien so I would suspect him but I think Cass might prove me wrong. I hope by the time the next one comes out that I remember the plot of this one, but we'll see.

I was a little skeptical at first because the premise reminded me of her Brighten series but thankfully it is different though there are slight similarities. This book does remind me of her Celestia series with the bond marks, and Cassius’s “familiar” though (not a bad thing)

For me it’s a little wordy and I found myself skipping over paragraphs to “get to the point” of some conversations. It was also repetitive in certain parts. Ch “Morning glimmer & burning lust” and the following Ch “undo the restraint between us” are basically the same thing just different POVs. Completely unnecessary.

Damien is an ass and I hope his demise is slow and painful. Gwen’s naivety about the “wicked” part of wicked academy was annoying. They actively and repeatedly warned her of what to expect yet she gets mad at them for not coming to her aid? Pull up your big girl parties and fight back girl?! Talking about “they’re all the same. They made me fall for them then treated me like garbage” please bffr, that literally didn’t happen. And who in the world is Atticus?
Introducing who seems to be a crucial character at the very end of the book was confusing and slightly annoying. We end on a cliff hanger unsurprisingly and I have soooooo many questions with no answers lol. I hope this next book has the answers.

Like a lot of other readers, I was sucked in by the 'girl disguised a a boy' trope in another RH fantasy academy setting. Safe to say that interest lasted about as long as her cover- one chapter tops? Not only did I feel misled by the 'summary', but I struggled with understanding half of the terms being thrown at me from page one. I do love a good action scene to start off a novel and hook the readers, but then to fill the next three chapters with four perspectives of one conversation and terms like Hexarch, Duskwalker, Flesh Crafting and the Order? Sorry, do I look like a walking encyclopaedia on all things supernatural and fantasy? Safe to say a decent chunk went over my head and the rest that I did actually take I almost wish I hadn't because we have another FMC who is a special snowflake and absolutely OP and playing the 'noble hero' who immediately catches the attention of all things with a dick- especially the 'ones who never looked at a girl before... until her'. Then the smut starts crazy soon after and a bunch of things are glossed over because why the heck not huh let's just throw some smouldering abs on that for ya instead. Bummed, because this sounded great in theory and iffy in practice. Maybe with some heavy revision this could be a great starting work to a more in depth series.

Honestly, this was kinda good. I don't know how to feel about it. A lot of parts confused me, especially at the end, but I think that's mostly my fault for skimming it. I also did not mind them revealing her true gender at the beginning- it just made things easier in my head. But I was not really into the fact that they were also interested in Gabriel. It just felt so off- like I'm always down for some MM content, but why would she have to use magic to make herself look like a guy for you to be into her? I guess this mostly applies to Damien. I dunno, it seems like they're gonna keep doing the gender switching stuff for more sexual stuff later on- lowkey a turn off for me so prob not gonna read the rest.
Also, the first part of the trials should've been at the end of the book. I don't understand why they were all put in a life-or-death situation roughly 12 hours after they met. She should've gone into the school- maybe spend like a week roaming around- then get caught by the guys- then they 'help' her assimilate herself into the school- and alas, finally the trail/ betrayal arc.
Also did not like how easily they fought this Damien; it seemed ridiculous since they all knew each other for this long. They have one inconvenience, and their only choice is to kick him out?

Spoiler**

This book isn’t what the description makes it out to be which is sad since the whole premise is about her pretending to be a boy. She is literally made out to be a girl within a couple pages. Also the description of the book makes it seem like the main guys will bully her which never happens except for one and he leaves the group so like not a love interest?? and this literally happens in the last few pages. I’m honestly confused the book just doesn’t flow but I will say I am interested (it doesn’t take much) and want to know what happens. I understand her feeling for feeling betrayed by her “mates” but they did literally tell her they couldn’t do anything so I don’t know how to feel about it. Also this last guy just popped up outta nowhere he’s just like thrown in it feels like. I’ll keep reading cause why not 💁🏼‍♀️

This review is more for myself so I can remember everything when book 2 comes out. Overall, it was good. Hints of MM in the coming books, but none in this one. I dislike the push and pull, especially because the first 80% or the book was everything I needed. Then again, the last chapter was also perfect... It was just getting to the last chapter that took some work.

All in all, I'm on the fence about Book 2, but that might change by the time it comes out.

Good world building.
Realistic characters
Like the FMC
If D makes a comeback, I might break my phone... or dnf
No mm, but hints...

Academy of the Wicked: Year One, book one of the Paranormal Elites of Wicked Academy series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). I stopped reading this writer a few years back due to a lot of repetitive dialog, but I was intrigued by the synopsis and decided to give this book a try. I'm happy to say, this (very prolific) writer has had tremendous growth and with her writing style. The few repeats I think I only noticed because I was waiting for them. It's wonderful to see this author doing well. Her imagination and empathy for people show in her work. I'll be reading more, again.

Love the characters and how they met. Book was fast paced with a clear goal to save her sister then suddenly she is attending school, has boyfriends and friends… until the very end when they ignored her. Wtf?! So much potential in this book but the ending baffled me! Curious to learn more about the new character added in last chapter but frustrated at choices made. If I skipped last chapter I would add a star to my rating. Usually I like cliffhangers but this one was more of a bad bullying scene that made no sense. I wanted the group to pull together as friends but they worried about points?!

Another hidden MM

Did not realized this was a MM type of storyline. I was enjoying the plotline until it reached 80%. That's when the MMM side focused came up with the jealous vampire who had relationship with the h that's supposed to be bonded with the female. Then it went down hill with the ex h of the h bullying the female who allowed it and the bonded h did not do anything. What a disappointment that this book went down hill at the end. Don't care for the change of M/M/M relationship focused. Another one that did not disclosed what type of book this was. Not my type of storyline.

What a wordy book to say not much at all.

No idea why the guys are at the academy now considering they’re “ancient”, no idea why the FMC is staying. No idea what the plot line is supposed to be, except highlighting how uniquely amazing and powerful everyone in the group is. No real idea of how the bond marks formed or their significance. And Grim isn’t Grim? I don’t understand.

But my god every pov had the most wordy, repetitive inner dialogue. So much written, nothing said.

Why am I thinking about reading book 2? 🫣 I can’t imagine the mess of writing will improve much, so maybe I’ll skip it.

Ok look, this book is not good: its dialogue is repetitive, relationships jump forward and back for no apparent reason, and some things flat out do not make any logical sense.
BUT
It’s entertaining as hell and if you just view it as a manhua webcomic then it’s quite funny too.
Just picture the scenes as if they were in full webcomic mode and it’s a lot of fun.
Anyway I was having a stressful night and this proved a surprisingly pleasant distraction. Still only giving it 2 stars, but it’s 2 stars given with a begrudging fondness as opposed to frustration

Not what I expected, at all

This was supposed to be a simple supernatural Academy type read. This book hooked me and would let me get sleep. The building character dynamic was great. The strong female lead showed intelligence, strength and vulnerability. Boy the ending. On to book 2 because I must know more.

This book was so captivating! It just starts full tilt and doesn’t slow down. There is also a lot of information to process at like lightening speed. Some may think that lends it to feeling rushed, but I never felt that way.

I found this book a refreshing take on a fantasy academy romance. So much intrigue and what seems like incomprehensible possibilities!

This book/writing was not for me. Dragged to finished, boring struggled to keep my attention. Definitely insta connection but in a way I felt I was missing something/didn’t feel like the first book. No world building. Very very repetitive. All over the place with no solid direction, random. Weak transitions. Good potential concept poor follow through.

Disappointed

The story itself has me intrigued. However the writing is repetitive and irritating. Paragraph upon paragraph of repeating the same things in slightly different ways that serve no purpose in furthering the plot or giving any more depth of meaning. Sadly I do not think I can read any further books.

DNF in first chapter. This author can’t be a serious writer if she’s using both past tense and present tense in the very first chapter while stuff happen at the same time. I absolutely don’t get the high rating - how can readers look past that?

DNF at 23%. It's not what I thought it was going to be, I thought she was going to infiltrate as a man then there'd be lots of mystery... Nope. That was gone pretty quickly. I found the writing really difficult to follow, lots of internal monologues. Just not for me.
