As with almost all of Jodi Pucoult’s novels , she has an amazing gift of presenting a story that gives you so much insight to thoughts and feelings about many issues. She dedicates so much time to researching that what she writes is authentic. Fantastic!
In the book Nineteen Minutes it is about a teenage boy named Peter who was struggling mentally so he caused a school shooting. In the shooting he killed multiple students and a teacher. Peter was constantly bullied and he had very few friends throughout his childhood and high school experience. "Every kid in this school played a role: joke, brain, beauty, freak. All Peter had done was what they all secretly dreamed of: be someone, even for just nineteen minutes, who nobody else was allowed to judge." (Picoult 448). This quote shows how he suffered from being alone and he finally couldn't take it anymore. He wasn't trying to kill anyone, only himself, but he claims people got in the way at that's why he shoot them. As Peter's trial becomes closer and closer his lawyer is slowly unfolding all these facts about Peter and the truth. Josie Cormier was once Peter's friend at the time in Elementary school but then she stopped being his friend. Later in high school Peter liked Josie had a boyfriend named Matt. Matt was killed in the school shooting and everyone thinks Peter did it. Josie was at the school shooting and saw everything that happened. Josie is a witness but claims she doesn't remember anything until she does. At the very end of the book Josie finally tells the truth and makes a huge plot twist. However, Peter's trial didn't end the way he wanted, he was able to tell everyone why he did it and share his side of the story. "Everyone thinks you make mistakes when you're young [...] but I don't think we make any fewer when we're grown up." (Picoult 423). This quote shows how many in the world make mistakes and how powerful story.
In the book Nineteen minutes I really liked how it was a court case because it kept me intrigued. Since you don't know what happens to Peter till the end of the book I constantly wanted to read it because I wanted to know what happened. I also like how it included some romance throughout the book. Something I didn't like was how intense the book was because it made me emotional especially towards the end. Since you don't find out what happens to Peter till the very end of the book I didn't love that we had to wait that long because every chapter was closer to finding the truth but it made me very antsy and a little angry in a good way.
Overall the book is very interesting and powerful, I would definitely recommend it. However since the book is very intense I recommend it to high school students and adults. No one under the age of 14 should read this book due to the severe violence in it. I think the book highlights an important topic, a school shooting, the author did a great job of writing the story. If you like an emotional and powerful story with a little bit of romance, some bitter-sweet moments, and few moments of friendship then I recommend reading Nineteen Minutes.
I really wanted to love this book, first one I’ve read by this author but I thought it was terrible. Just going On about irrelevant detail, I’ve had to put it down 60% through, just drivel. Not for me
