A Pride and Prejudice adaptation set against the glimmering backdrop of Broadway, A Certain Step is a beautiful and compelling friends-to-lovers romance that delivers everything you could want in a heartfelt, swoon-worthy love story. The chemistry between Ethan Everett, a charming Broadway heartthrob, and Willa Davidian, his talented best friend, is absolutely magnetic. The slow burn of their relationship had me hooked from the very first chapter, and the emotional payoff is worth every page.
Willa, an understudy for the lead role of Elizabeth, is an introverted, demisexual woman with a complicated past. Her strict no-actors rule for dating is in place for a reason, but as Ethan’s feelings for her deepen, and hers for him grow as well, the stakes feel incredibly high. The premise alone makes this a perfect choice for romance lovers, but the setting within the dazzling world of Broadway, particularly during performances of Midnights at Pemberley!, adds an exciting and unique layer to the story.
What truly makes this book stand out, however, is its heart. It’s a love letter to friendship, healing, and finding someone who makes even the ordinary days special. The characters, both main and side, feel wonderfully fleshed out. Miles, Sahar, Sam, Niomi, Declan and Christian each brought something wonderful to the narrative, adding depth and humor to the story. By the time the curtain falls, I was left with a deep sense of satisfaction. I am now eagerly looking forward for Sahar’s story to be told next.
This book is the perfect remedy for a Blue Monday or any day that needs a bit of magic and warmth. A true gem!
