This book is my love letter to the glistening world of live theatre, friendships, music, TV, and movies, and to the little girl inside of me with big dreams and no idea how to make any of them a reality. It’s my love letter to Jane Austen and the way her words changed my life. It’s my love letter to my favorite—and underrated trope—friends to lovers.
This book is about doing the things we love with the people we adore right beside us, and it’s about healing, too. It’s about ordinary days that are made better by those around us.
And maybe, most importantly, it’s my love letter to the ones still waiting to be someone’s first choice.
My biggest hope to any reader who opens this book (whether you love it or hate it) is that Midnights at Pemberley feels like a safe space for you. You’re welcome here, as you are, and I hope you feel that. I hope you have a blast!

I loved this author’s first book, To the Skyline, so I was super excited to get a chance to read A Certain Step early. I loved this book especially how the main couple yearned for each other and loved each other fully and that there was no third act breakup! This a great version of a workplace he fell first best friends to lovers romance. I think many of my friends will appreciate the setting of it being a Broadway play and the play being a different take on a Jane Austen novel.

Nothing like a warm beautifully written friends-to-lovers story to brighten what's known as Blue Monday (especially this one IYKYK). And even better if such story is titled from a Austen literary quote.
I am familiar with the works of Gissane Sophia and I have to admit I am late posting my review of To The Skyline (coming soon, promise!) but I was truly looking forward to read this book. Of course, I love Jane Austen and having Pride and Prejudice as a background play inspired in this universally acknowledged work was a great bonus.
And I have to say, dear reader, I was not disappointed at all! I am not as familiar as I would like with Broadway and theatre plays (other than my brief experience as a middle school playwright lol) but I enjoyed having a glimpse of this universe, where actors give their best to portray a play, and in this case a fantastic rendition of the Bennet sisters' story in a contemporary cabaret fashion. I liked how the environment of what happens behind stage is portrayed in a realistic way, showing the author's commitment to take us into this world. And especially, by having that as a background scenery for this delightful love story between two friends was a wonderful experience as a reader.
The main characters, Ethan and Willa, are so relatable in the way the author portrays them, and both their interactions between each other and with their friends and co=workers are so natural and organic that it is easy to believe how anyone can ship them (there, I said it). I enjoyed learning more about their fears, their struggles and how they fit greatly with each other. Time and again this is a common situation we might have faced and perhaps even starred at (having a friend so close that people will wonder if there is anything more than mere friendship). However, I liked how their transition towards that stage was not rushed at all in my opinion; it felt earned, and with an adequate degree of exposition in between it was totally credible.
And with that, of course, the conflict arises and I don't mean to spoil it at all, but I truly appreciate how Gissane portrayed it. Perhaps the biggest question someone who had faced the choice of pursuing a romantic relationship with a close/best friend is what if it doesn't work out? Could things go back to the way they were? Can a friendship survive unscathed a failed romantic relationship between such friends?
It is not an easy choice - it is a risk and it could work out, or perhaps not. And as much as we take our own perspectives and experiences about it and use them to judge how a fictional character might react, I think it is one of the things I enjoy from reading fiction: how can we think about the situations we read about, and we use it to learn more about the characters, and the challenges they face. One of the things mentioned is how social media can affect us as individuals and how actors and artists can face both the unwavering support of their fans as a token of appreciation for sharing their craft and their talents with the world, but how they are exposed to the ugly side of the internet and how the anonymity can work as a bolstering device for individuals to release their worst upon creators, or to stalk them. It's a sobering notion and totally understandable to be affected by it.
I also commend having a tracklist for this fictional play's songs that I would definitely pay to go and watch on the stage!
Definitely a must-read book! Truly recommend it!

I absolutely loved Ethan and Willa—they are perfect together. Their ability to understand each other without even speaking is truly amazing. Their relationship felt so natural and heartwarming, making it impossible not to root for them. The tension between their unspoken feelings kept me hooked, and every moment they shared was filled with so much depth and emotion. The entire time, I kept thinking, "Come on, come on, just confess already!" There were moments when I felt like jumping into the book myself just to shake them both and make them admit their feelings! 😩
I’ve been wanting to start reading classics, but I haven’t actually tried yet. So, at times, I found certain aspects of this book a little confusing—especially the drama, the numbers, and some of the references. However, once I got the hang of it, I absolutely loved the concept! This book has made me even more curious and excited to finally dive into the world of classics 🥹
The side characters were just as amazing, each bringing something special to the story. Miles, Sahar, and Christian quickly became my personal favorites. Their dynamics added even more depth to the book, making it even more engaging. I cannot wait to read Sahar’s story next—I'm definitely keeping an eye out for it! 👀

Hello, my new favourite friends-to-lovers trope book! 🎀
Earlier this year I was thinking how I've not read many theatre-based books and then I got a signup email for this book and definitely took it as a sign that now is the time to dive into this world and thankfully this story has now a special place in my heart.
Willa and Ethan, both were so cute and their friendship, their chemistry, and their understanding of each other were so beautiful.
Ethan, what a wonderful man he is! Talented yet sceptical of his magical acting, he's so much in love with Willa! He was so nice, attentive, supportive and such a great man, I adore him so much.
Willa, a beautiful dancer, is highly talented yet she lacks confidence and consistently tries to do better, I loved how she worked on herself throughout the play and her relationship with Ethan.
The setting was so dreamy and fun to read, it was a play based on pride and prejudice course it had to be amazing. I loved how the author described the lives backstage and the supporting characters are so amazing as well.
I loved this book so much! Highly recommend it 🎀❤️

Book 1 in the Midnights at Pemberley by Gissane Sophia, A Certain Step is a friend's to lovers romance.
A medium paced read I found it very enjoyable, it had a mix of characters and being plot driven. The characters are diverse and definitely loveable.
This theatre style read is a must, especially for all those who were theatre kids growing up.

“Ethan Everett loved his best friend, with every bone in his body.” Who doesn’t want their hot best friend, who wears tortoise shell-colored glasses, to love them?
Ethan was the perfect romantic lead. He was sweet and caring. He ended up going for what he wanted. I loved that Willa was demisexual and how Ethan was so accepting of that. There was a beautiful ease with their relationship that happens when someone falls in love with their best friend. The tension when they are onstage together was fantastic. I need to see this in real life!
The side characters in this story were fabulous too. Even though the leads in a romance book are the most important, I feel that making sure your side characters are just as important. Too often I end up disliking one or more of them, which maybe my own flaw, but these side characters truly did feel like a friend group.
Gissane writes beautifully and is adept at creating vivid environments. I don’t think I’m the only one who would love to see Midnights at Pemberley come to life! We need a P&P musical like yesterday!

This book has such a cool premise, as I’m really unfamiliar with broadway and musicals the idea of it really intrigued me.
I loved the friends-to-lovers trope and honestly Ethan was big simp for Willa and I die for that shit 🥹

Obsessed? Me? 1000% yes. Now, where do I begin? How about a little bit about this book?
So this story is about the cast of a broadway show called Midnights at Pemberly, which is a show that is sort of Pride and Prejudice if it occurred in the Moulin Rouge with all of the passion and sensuality one could imagine. While we get to meet the entire cast, this story is about Willa, the dance captain and understudy, and Ethan Everette, who plays the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. And these two have had a totally normal and platonic friendship since they met during rehearsals, right? Wrong. These two are so down bad looooooong before they admit it, and it takes Willa stepping into Elizabeth for them to admit it. But it's not immediately easy sailing.
Now what else can you expect in this book?
Ethan. Everett. One of the most down-bad-for-a-woman, pining-away-with-adoration-and-love-main characters that I've ever read. And maybe it's representative of how important his friendship with Willa was before they became more, but he is always attentive, encouraging and supportive. He's a genuinely good guy who, despite being cast as a lead and having many fans, worries that he isn't good enough and is always working to be a better man and performer.
And Willa- the beautiful and talented dance captain/understudy who loves performing but experiences a lot of imposter syndrome and confidence issues. She's real, going to therapy and always working on herself, who grows into a more comfortable and confident version of herself through this production and her relationship with Ethan. She is also Armenian, and there are important discussions in this book about how much harder POC have to work to be treated equally- especially in Broadway which has a history of not casting Black and POC actors/actresses in parts that are not specifically for POC.
And some honorable mentions for the whole friend group. Sahar was the best friend and roommate Willa could ask for, both a support to her friends and providing some comic relief- I will definitely read her love story next (and if it's not the coffee guy, I'm going to flip a table). And the rest of the cast watching Willa and Ethan dance around each other, taking bets when they would finally do something about it, were so perfect in their own ways as well!
Now, this felt like a book that was written directly for me. I mean, a friends to lovers romance (which I'm a sucker for) that takes place on a Broadway show (theater kid energy here) based on Pride and Prejudice (hello? the first classic book I ever LOVED), with a demisexual lead (can totally relate).

Willa has been best friends with Ethan for two years, since their run in the Broadway musical “Midnights at Pemberley” began. She’s healing from a breakup with a true dirtbag of an ex.
Ethan is a man obsessed- he just hasn’t realized it- until the opening of this book. Willa has flown home to England for her brother’s wedding. Ethan is a mopey mess whose friends engage in delightful shit-giving to point out to him that he is DOWN BAD for his bestie, Willa. (I love a good friend group in a romance novel. *happy sigh*)
Willa meanwhile is across the pond feeling very alone, and realizing she really misses her best friend. That he may, in fact, be her person- the face she’s searching for in every crowd. Ethan greeting her upon arrival back in New York stirs up SO MANY FEELINGS- and our story is off!
Sometimes in friends to lovers, the back and forth internal dialogue about “I can’t say how I feel because I can’t lose my friend” can get a little bit much for me.
Enter Sahar, Willa’s roommate and other bestie. I love her😂 She says to Willa the exact words I was thinking and I felt so much happier knowing someone was trying to set Willa on the path to GO GET YOUR MAN!
I love that this workplace romance takes place in a Broadway musical production. I am not a theater girl, but I was impressed with how well written the stage scenes were written. I was able to visualize what was happening, and honestly, I need the Midnights at Pemberley play to be written. It sounds amazing!
Ethan plays the leading man, Darcy, and Willa is part of the dancers ensemble and the understudy for Elizabeth. The slow build of the growing attraction and sexual tension as she helps Ethan rehearse dance scenes, or he watches her dance on stage is perfect.
But the scene when Willa has to go onstage as Elizabeth after the lead actress has to leave for a family emergency- the longing and the love and the sexual tension were so well written.
No third act breakup, and the chapter at the Tony Awards made my heart so happy.

I'm a big fan of the friends-to-lovers trope. And I'm also a theatre kid. So, the plot of this book is very niche for me. I assumed that I would finish this book quickly, in less than three days or so. But that was not the case. No, I'm not in a reading slump. It was this book. The whole thing is painfully millennial. From the characters down to the writing, the language, and the scenarios. And I'm very aware that most contemporary romance novels are written by millennial authors; therefore, most of the time, the main characters are millennials. I've read hundreds of them at this point, and yet this is only the second book that was difficult for me to get through because of the same reason. And you know the best thing about the friends-to-lovers trope? What makes it so so good? The tension. The yearning. And I'm not gonna lie; sometimes the miscommunication is so good, too, when done right. But this one, Willa and Ethan, just lacked that. I'm not saying that they don't have it, they definitely have all of that, it wasn't just enough. Which made them kinda boring and two-dimensional. This is not to say that their problems and challenges as a couple and as individuals were not valid. They definitely are, and a lot of people would relate to them. But being "conflict-free" shouldn't equate to being boring. It's not the same. You can be conflict-free without being boring. I also enjoy fluff more than smut. This was 90% fluff, and yet I found it to be redundant. It's like reading a Hallmark card. Not much depth. I wished there was more showing than telling. SHOW me how they love each other. Communication and love declarations are all good and important in a relationship, but they would be better if they were accompanied by action. I'm still rating it 3 stars because I still liked Ethan and Willa's relationship. One whole extra star for that.

Willa and Ethan have been best friends for year and are both working in the same Broadway Musical “Midnights at Pemberly” a Hamilton-esque version of Pride and Prejudice (which is such a fun concept). Ethan has been pining for Willa for a while, but she is just starting to realize what she feels for him. Once they realize their feelings for each other, Ethan is so kind and patient with Willa that it is the cutest things ever!! I found this to be extremely believable and how real best friends turned lovers would go. Little to no awkwardness and a willingness to listen and support each other.
There are only 2 spicy chapters but I came to find it wasn’t about that. This story is about the journey to feeling comfortable with each other and making that connection first before taking things to the next level. I usually like more spice, but I was much more invested in their relationship and watching it grow that the shmexy time!
The musical theater setting was so much fun to get a glimpse at, and the cast of supporting characters?? I loved every single one of them!! They were all so much fun and engaging that I really got invested in the story!!
I cannot wait to see where the story goes next!! I NEED a Sahar an Jay story!!

Pride & Prejudice is one of my favourite books of all time so reading a book about a musical based on it felt like heaven! I kinda want this show to be real because I need to see it for myself 🤣 I loved this book so much. The friends to lovers trope can sometimes seem rushed and fake but this was perfect. You could feel the tension between Ethan and Willa from the second they both realised their feelings were growing and the chemistry when they performed together was palpable through the page. Everything felt so natural and real, it was difficult to remember this was fiction at times. Really can’t wait for more from this series because all of the side characters are incredible too!

Dual POV 3rd person
This was a very sweet, albeit predictable story, and I really enjoyed how the Broadway musical they both performed in was sort of a parallel to/framework for Ethan and Willa’s story. I’ll be honest, I really wish Midnights at Pemberley was a real musical because I want to go see it lol. I am finding the “he/she couldn’t possibly feel the same way as me” and “ don’t want to ruin our friendship” thing to be over done in books lately, though.
The story dragged a little in the second act and the whole “you remember so much about me” seemed overdone BUT I do think the slow pace they moved at as a couple was a nice change from most stories I read. Along with that Willa’s character helped me understand more what being demisexual is like.
Based on the 3rd act drama and author’s intro I feel like I can’t say anything negative about this book lol. I did like it, and hopefully it’s clear that it’s more of a me issue and my preferences than being critical of /mean toward the author. Overall I did enjoy the story, but I feel pretty neutral about it.

From the get go, I was sucked in to Willa and Ethan's world. A Certain Step is such a big YES! Willa and Ethan are coworkers and BEST friends who intend on staying friends. Their chemistry and familiarity with one another is very next level and I'm a big sucker for friends-to-lovers. This book has me in a chokehold and I love it so much. It made me reflect and think on my relationship; there were multiple moments where I was reflecting and thinking to myself, "Yup, been there done that. Still like that. Holy shit, that's me."
I love how Willa and Ethan know each other. I love how their story plays out alongside all the complications and heaviness of a relationship like that. I appreciate how their individual thoughts and feelings are addressed separately and together. The communication between them is amazing. I love how supportive their friends and families are.
If you are looking for a book to binge but is lighter on the spice but just as heavy on the plot and character development, this is the book for you. I love and enjoy this so much that I'm going to pick up a physical copy so that I can experience this all over again.

Ethan and Willa steal your heart in this. They are so sweet and watching them be the absolute best of friends and then slowly start to realize they are madly in love with each other is such a fun journey. Plus you get all the fun of their found family in their cast on the Midnights at Pemberley musical (which also sounds amazing and I need it to be real lol) all the characters in this book just make it so fun. And Ethan really gives the saying “to be seen is to be loved” to a whole other level throughout this book. I can’t wait to get more of them in the second book. Honestly so so good 🤍

"She was like gravity sometines. No matter how hard he tried to fight, he couldn't prevent the steps his body took to be near her."
I was so excited to read this book from the moment I first read the description. It has all my favorite tropes and was set in a Broadway production, so it had something new too! Willa and Ethan were best friends to lovers combined with a workplace romance. Ethan was so Boy Obsessed that I believe his face would be the definition in a dictionary. Willa had such a beautiful arc of growth while she fell in love with Ethan, it was just a great read with great pacing.
I loved literally everything about the musical aspect and all the characters involved. All of the theatre scenes were lovely to read and enjoyable. And the nosy castmates made the story more entertaining and helped the plot along. The added social media content that all the characters were a part of was just so fun to read.
I will most definitely continue to read this series because I need to know what happens next with the Midnights at Pemberley cast. This was just such an adorable love story with adorable characters.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a first for me to read a book set in a Broadway play, but I loved how they set it up. They basically give you the cast list and a press release about the show the characters are performing that's the setting of the book. So well done. Demisexuality and mental health representation are genuine and relatable. Ethan Everett is the leading man in all ways. Handsome and well-known actor in his own right, he's set for a Tony run with this role as Darcy. Because oh yeah, the musical is a Pride and Prejudice retelling that honestly sounds amazing, and I want to exist for real. His best friend is Willa, an ensemble cast member and co-dance captain on the production - it was a connection from day one. She's out of town for her brother's wedding, and he's missing her, realizing he's crushing on her but also denying it. She's lonely and realizing she's missing him, but also not sure how she feels about that. She has a lot to unpack in her own life before she can be with anyone, though. This story was really cute and so original in the plot device of having it all be a Broadways play. I'll let you see how it all unfolds on your own.

I read A Certain Step by Gissane Sophia recently, and I am absolutely wrecked in the best way possible! Ethan and Willa’s friendship is everything we all secretly dream of pure, deep, and so real that you can't help but feel every moment of their transition from friends to something more. 🤭 The tension between them? Heart-stopping. I found myself begging for them to finally admit their feelings because every second of their quiet longing felt like it was tearing me apart.🥹
Ethan is the dream guy we all wish existed. As they work together on the Pride and Prejudice musical adaptation, “Midnights at Pemberley”, Ethan and Willa become best friends. For Ethan, his attraction goes beyond friendship but Willa has a rule against dating fellow actors.
An opportunity of a lifetime comes when the lead actress is on an emergency leave, allowing Willa to act as Elizabeth, while acting across Ethan, who is Mr Darcy. The explosive chemistry they have in person, translates into the same onstage and their kiss finally leads to a new phase in their relationship.
This was a really good slow burn, friends to lovers romance. As a big fan of the original Pride and Prejudice, I loved how we are given glimpses of the musical adaptation scenes and how the script ties in with how they felt at that time. I wished I could watch this musical in real life!
I also loved the family which they have found in the whole cast and crew. There is true love and care, with no hidden motives. Everyone is so genuine without the typical envy or sabotage to guard from.

Normally, I’m not a fan of friends-to-lovers, but this one was perfect🥹
It felt like reading a book where both characters are wholesome… like, sometimes it’s just the guy whose acts of service are boosted up, but here, both of them are sunshine-coded!!
Ethan and Willa are perfect for each other💕
The slow burn was totally worth it, and it made me want to shout at them to just kiss already!😂💕
Their chemistry was so natural, it never felt like I was reading something fictional💕
I’m not at all familiar with how Broadway or musicals work, but this book gave such an insight into that world, I really felt like I was behind the scenes too🫂
And the mental health rep👏👏
I’m truly happy I get to read more books that focus on mental health representation. It makes healing easier for those who read through it💕

Ethan and Willa are costars in a new broadway show, best friends, and secretly hopelessly in love with each other. Told in dual POV, this follows both of them as they attempt to express their feelings for each other, deal with success and fame, and ultimately reach that perfect happily ever after (with no silly third act breakup!)
While this is a good love story, has some good representation (Willa is demisexual), and just a great balance of spice to romance, this gets 4 stars from me for its portrayal of broadway. The show itself (YAY Pride and Prejudice!) is really well crafted, the scenes of the cast are just really believable, the setup of the show is incredibly authentic: it is clear SO much research went into building the setting of the plot. Its immersive from page one. Honestly I found myself caring a bit less about Ethan / Willa (it was clear they belonged together) and more about the show itself and the cast of characters!
Hopeful for more in this series.

As a theatre nerd I was so excited for this book. The author really took me through the emotions I used to have before performances. Having one character be a bigger star than the other was also a really interesting hierarchy to explore.
I also loved the demisexuality representation. It IS real and I think this is possibly the first book I’ve ever read that outright stated a main character was demisexual, others have only alluded to it. Also, YAY for not having just straight, white characters. I loved all of the diversity in the book and the discussions of how much more difficult it is for non-white actors to get roles that are for traditionally white characters in theatre.
Willa and Ethan both have feelings for one another. Ethan is more confident in his feelings than Willa but they’re both too scared to come clean to the other. Willa is terrified of losing Ethan and we get to be with her as she works through it.
