Rey de Invierno es un romance paranormal independiente con final feliz. Cada libro de la serie Las Cortes Wyth presentará a una pareja diferente, con una historia completa y un final feliz.
This was an intriguing and imaginative read. The winter court needs a sacrifice to save it from a spreading curse that is infecting his land. A selfless and pure human. One human life weighed against and the entire court of the Fae and for the winter king there is no contest. Amber a down on her luck and now jobless young girl is that human. Kidnapped and taken to the winter court Amber suddenly finds herself a part of a whole new world one she never dreamed existed. Cadewyn is the winter king of Wyth and from the very first moment, he feels himself drawn to his new houseguest. He's aware he has to sacrifice her for the greater good but wishes it was otherwise. His feelings naturally deepen the more time he spends around Amber and naturally he feels such guilt especially as he is also withholding the full truth from her to gain her cooperation. Cade fights his feelings his need to protect her conflicting with his ultimate goal. I wasn't much a fan of his blowing hot and cold even though I was aware of the whys I just felt so sorry for Poor Amber. She was such a sweet girl who just wanted someone or something to call home. and the constant push and pull was not fair. This in itself wasn't an incredibly angsty read and if you like the romantic fated mate type of stories this one would definitely be a fit for you. It also could have done with some fleshing out as I wasn't always feeling the emotion between Cade and Amber and some of the scenes and secondary characters were a tad choppy. Quite a quick read, I managed to read it in one sitting and it's dual POV which I do prefer. This really was an easy and enjoyable read with a lot more positives overall than negatives. Giving this one a thumbs up from my camp. I would be interested in seeing what comes next from this author. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Winter King (The Wyth Courts, #1).
A story about shifters is always a good start for me. This story was well written and held my attention. The author has created a world in another dimension that is constantly bathed in snow. It is inhabited by Were’s and other monsters. In this case, the Were’s are good. There are also Fae and Goddesses. It is also a story of love and war.
Cade is the King of his land, and a darkness is threatening to overtake his kingdom. He asks the Goddess of Wyth what he should do and is told it is a curse with but one cure. Meanwhile, in the human world, Amber’s life is falling apart. She lost her job, has a mean roommate and hates her life. However, she is pure of heart and selfless. Just what Cade needs to save his kingdom.
Cade goes to her world and kidnaps her. Well, sort of, since her life is such a mess anyway, she goes willingly. She is told about the curse and introduced to the Goddess. From there you must read the story to find out what happens. There is more to this story than what I have given you. It truly is a fun read and fairly quick, but that maybe because I couldn’t put it down.
This was light and fluffy. This had an amazing idea with some really cool monsters and magic but it was rushed, choppy and fell flat. I read it all in about 2 hours. It was too predictable. It wasn't a bad read but I felt there was this huge story to tell and it could have been much more.
I was asked by the author if I would read and review this book and I am so glad I agreed! I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down!
Cade is the Winter King in the fae realm of Wyth and when a curse is literally destroying his land, he has to venture to the human realm to find one who is selfless in order to stop the curse. He has no problem with this at all and sure enough finds Amber, a young, girl whose life is not going the way she wants at all. He drags her back to his palace, where she believes she is dreaming, why else would a man this gorgeous be in the same bedroom as her?!
Reality soon kicks in and while Cade doesn't directly lie to her about why she is there in his world, far away from anything or anyone she knows, he doesn't tell her the complete truth either, so not really knowing what she is agreeing to, Amber says she will help save his land and its people.
However, others soon hear about this human girl and things progress rapidly in the Winter fae realm, yet Cade cannot stop thinking about Amber as being more than just a sacrifice. Knowing what he has to do to save his land, he is torn between his people and Amber. Luckily for him, Amber forms a plan of her once she really finds out what is going on and in the end Cade gets more of a surprise than he could ever have hoped for!
I loved this book and the romance element was just perfect in my opinion. Both Cade and Amber both seemed to feel needed, feel wanted and their union felt right to me. I really feel for Amber at times too as she never really understood why Cade would pull away from her and he couldn't explain it either without telling her things he didn't want her to know.
I loved the world building - I can really picture how beautiful this realm was and as much as I hate the cold, it made me want to see it myself!
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy to review. I look forward to reading more from this author and this series.
I stopped reading by the second chapter. The constant saying of things like,"frost above," "oh my ice" was ridiculous. Read a few pages and you'll see how dumb it is. Just because a character is from the Winter Court does not mean its a good idea to substitute saying with words like, winter, frost, ice etc.
This is the first book in The Wyth Courts series by this author, and although it held a lot of promise I do think it needed developing more, the story needed a bit more oomph, it was a bit predictable and I didn't feel the connections with the characters. That said I did enjoy the story, there is definitely scope for more books, so will keep an eye out and see how they go.
So the idea behind the story is that the Winter King, Cade, has had a curse cast upon his land and only a selfless and caring human can save his world and must be sacrificed to do so. Amber is very much a do gooder, always helping out others in need and gets taken by Cade back to the Winter Court. He tells her only she can save his land, but keeps to himself that she has to die in order to do it. They have a connection that draws them to each other, he ends up spending time with her and falling for her, and so ends up with a major decision, save the land or save her.
Its a quick short read, the story is there but needs filling out a bit to make it better. Cade's use of winter related curses did tend to get a little annoying though! Let's see what book 2 brings.
With an intriguing premise I really wanted to like this more. It was a quick and light read with a few moment of charm. However, the overall story felt a little rushed and I wished that the author dove into the plot a little bit more. There were a lot of opportunities to make the plot alot more interesting, but overall it felt very predictable and the characters underdeveloped. I look forward to reading the second book in the series.
The author provided me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
A curse, a sacrifice and an impossible choice. A wonderful new series full of magic, fae and fated romance. I really enjoyed the characters and loved how the story played out. It was hard to put down once I picked it up.
It was good I enjoyed the book Amber is truly the most selfless human and caidin find himself in between a rock and a hard place save his people or follow his heart
Winter King Series: The Wyth Courts Book 1 Author: JS Dark Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy Romance Release Date: October 9, 2019 Pages: 184
REVIEWED BY MEMBER OF THE PARANORMAL ROMANCE REVIEW TEAM King Cadewyn (Cade) of the Winter Court has been brought news that a curse has been placed on the land and the land is dying. The Habred live in Tywyll Forest which is inhabited by monsters and after the war with them every leader and important person including the commander were killed. Unfortunately unknown to Cade was the fact that the commander’s son lived and has sworn revenge. By destroying Wyth’s land there will be nothing left of the Winter Court and its people. The only hope to save everyone is a sacrifice, a sacrifice of a pure-hearted, selfless human. Cade was guaranteed that when he arrived in the human realm he would recognize the one he needed.
Amber is twenty-one just lost her job and lives with a drunken roommate named Kimberly. Her life does not look promising but in spite of that when she sees a homeless man going through the garbage she hands him her jacket and her lunch. Then an elderly man drops his wallet spilling all his money on the floor, not only does Amber return every dollar she also refuses a reward. Her next act of goodness is to return a little puppy that was taken from a little girl by a group of bullies and with every act Cade knows that he has found that one true pure-hearted and selfless human.
With no other choice Cade uses magic to put Amber to sleep and returns her to his castle, he doesn’t hide the fact that she is in the fae realm and the Winter Court. Refusing to reveal that he brought her there to be sacrificed he appeals to her sense of goodness and that he requires her for a special ceremony that will save his people and land. Not one to turn her back on anyone in need she readily agrees and has to undergo cleansing. The one thing that Cade didn’t count on was falling for Amber and he knows he has to stay away from her.
This book was like reading a beautiful fairytale complete with a handsome fae king and a beautiful human girl. There is intrigue, betrayal, lies, secrets and romance. What happens between Cade and Amber is not something I will reveal but I will say this is a must read and I can’t wait for more. Although this is a series each book will be about a different couple and will have a complete ending.
Great Fae fantasy romance! Amber is down on her luck. She just lost her job and is living with a horrible roommate. What's special about Amber is she never looses her empathy, kindness or willingness to help. Cade is the Winter king in the Fae realm of Wyth. His land has been poisoned by a curse from longstanding enemies. In order to save his land he needs a pure hearted sacrifice. I loved Amber and Cade. They are perfect for each other! I felt bad for both of them, but they were doing what they had to do to survive. Amber was so sweet and compassionate, I hated to see her struggle. Cade was struggling as well. He so badly wanted to save his land and his people, but was so torn on the sacrifice required. I thought the flow of the story was great, no filler or stilted dialogue. Easy to get into and the story kept pace. The descriptions were amazing too! It was over before I knew it, I would love to read more about these two. I love the concept of the different courts and can't wait to see what's next!
2.5 stars. Good story, but like many of the other reviewers I agree that the overall book could have been fleshed out more. There was potential for more storylines and insights/perspectives from other secondary characters that were not taken. Because the book was so short the emotions between the two main characters were not as deep and more one dimensional than necessary. If the book were longer there would have been more time to build the tension and attraction between the main characters. Overall, ok book but could have been more.
This reads like it was written by a talented amateur high school student. So many little things, like how the lead character is supposed to be small and delicate but yet somehow has big breasts and wide hips. The prose is just bland and the sex scenes uninspired.
I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I found it very surface-level, predictable and I'm not entirely sure the characters had personalities. This would be great if you just want to switch off for a predictable, fae romance though!
I bought this series of 4 books as it came up as a 99p offer - and sounded so much like an ACOTAR rip off that I had to know more. It turns out this was published the year before ACOTAR, which makes me wonder if the author read that book on an ARC read or something? Because they’re so similar in places that it’s hard to overlook the similarities, but while I have some issues with the first Sarah J Maas book in that series, they are nothing compared to the issues I had with this absolute pile of poop. The author has a real obsession with certain terms, and massively overuses them, and I’m not even talking about replacing swear words with frost/freeze/snow etc which is another issue in and of itself. A lot of the time there are factually incorrect phrases, like seeing a person’s hair “down their back” when the person is facing them. Like, dude, you can’t SEE that it’s down her back, it could be pilled into a massive bun on the back of her head for all you know. Her head rested on his shoulders. What, one head rested on BOTH SHOULDERS AT THE SAME TIME? Things like that just make me mad because it’s sloppy writing that could be easily cleaned up with some time and some care. Basically, I would expect issues like that to be gone in the first edit. What really made me laugh was all the mentions of the fmc being obsessed with fantasy novels. Maybe if the author had read a few more of those same fantasy novels the heroine was obsessed with then this book would be better. At least the author would know not to use terms like hard-on in a frosting fantasy novel. It kinda takes the reader out of all that world building you’re doing. I have zero intention of reading the other three books in the series, even though I already purchased them. This one was bad enough to put me off. And I will absolutely avoid this author at all costs going forward. This is one of the worst books I’ve read, and that’s saying something as I’ve read 50 Shades.

Synopsis: His court is dying, and she’s his only hope …
Monsters of the Tywyll Forest have poisoned the Winter Court, unleashing a prophecy that demands a human sacrifice to save the withering land. Willing to do whatever it takes to save his people, King Cadewyn of the Winter Court ventures to the human world in search of one insignificant life to claim...
Amber was used to her life being in shambles, but getting kidnapped and whisked off to a magical fae realm was a new low, even for her. While feeling drawn to the fae King by a sizzling attraction, her apprehension builds to a panic over why he brought her there.
When Cade discovers that Amber is his mate, can he still carry out his plan to sacrifice her? Or will the malicious plotting of others within the court leave Amber trapped in the mystical realm with nowhere to run?
Pace At 198 pages, I spent too much time reading Winter King< than I should have. The pace was just okay, enough action happening within the plot to keep the story moving enough but it didn’t really hook me, suck me in, like it should have. At my usual reading pace, I should have finished this book in an afternoon and it took me almost three days! But I can’t place all the blame on the pace and plot because they were actually not too bad compared to the characters…
Characters I am not generally a violent person but Amber was driving me to towards a life of crime. I wanted more conflict from her, she was too agreeable all the time. Like I get it, she’s kind-hearted and selfless, blah, blah, blah, but people can feel and experience multiple things at once. She acquiesced to be sacrificed was too easily. She was practically giddy about it, spinning around a field a-la Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, announcing to the universe that, yes, she had made up her mind and was going to sacrifice herself after about 10 minutes of contemplation. I could not relate. Maybe that’s a sign I’m too stubborn for my own good but I like to call it self-preservation. I would hope that if I was kidnapped and told I was going to be killed to save a random kingdom (that I had zero connection to), I’d want a bit more information and maybe think on it for a bit longer than a single night.
Unlike Amber, I think that Cade is a much more developed character and experiences a wider range of emotions, although he seems to just cycle through the same ones. His internal conflict between duty and desire is more compelling and makes him the more interesting character. Without Cade, I’m not sure I could have finished the book because Amber was driving me bonkers.
Spice Yes, there are a couple explicit scenes after a slow-ish burn and a fair bit of build-up. The scenes are written decently well but they are a wee bit vanilla, in my opinion. Still, I would classify Winter King as a lower-end spicy read.
My Thoughts Overall, I thought Winter King was an okay read. I probably wouldn’t read it again and I don’t feel super compelled to continue with the series, although each subsequent book features a different royal couple so Amber likely won’t be there to annoy me anymore. The writing felt very surface-level to me. I tend to create an image of the scene and characters in my head and I had a lot of trouble picturing this story. More telling, less showing. The fact that I didn’t DNF is a good sign but it just didn’t tick my boxes. Regardless, I think if you aren’t a big fantasy reader because you don’t like the complexity of the world-building or learning the intricate magic systems and you like a sweet romance then you might enjoy Winter King. It wasn’t my particular taste but that’s not to say someone else won’t love it.
Recommended for You might like Winter King if you’ve tried fantasy before but found it too long and complicated and you prefer a sweet romance with a good-hearted heroine and a bit of spice.
Cadewyn is a fae king of the winter court and the book opens with him learning of a curse to their lands. The curse is unable to be overcome unless a pure hearted human sacrifice is found. The fate fae whose name changes also tells Cade where to find this pure human. Cade transports to the human realm and encounters Amber. She's so wholesome that she gave food and her clothes to a homeless person minutes after losing her job, helps her ungrateful roommate out of jams, went out of her way to find the owner of a puppy lost in a park, and helped a stranger who'd fallen without stealing his money that was in the wallet or accepting a $100 reward for her help, and this was after she lost her job. At this point in the book, I was feeling that Amber was too much of a goody two shoes for me to be able to enjoy the story and had mostly given up on it. At that point too, I wasn't really engaged with the story or the characters. Continuing on though, Cade had been following Amber for days so he witnessed her selfless acts, but he finally took her away when he saw her going into a gentlemen's club. Amber was going to search for work, but Cadewyn pulled her out and took her to the fae realm instead.
Once there, Cadewyn asks for Amber's help in saving his kingdom but doesn't disclose the fact that she'll need to be sacrificed to do so. Amber being who she is, agrees to stay in the fae realm for two weeks leading up to the ritual and agreed to go through a daily cleansing the fae fate had told them was required. While at the winter court though, Cadewyn and Amber are drawn to one another and go on dates and spend time together. Amber finds out but way of a conversation in a tense situation between Cadewyn and his enemy that she's supposed to be sacrificed for his kingdom. Amber is hurt but not for long since they get back to the winter court castle and she asks Cadewyn to make love to her so that she doesn't die a virgin. Side eye here for me followed by a massive eye roll. I get that Amber is selfless but golly, I'd have expected her to be hurt longer than that.
When sacrificial day arrives, Amber gives herself up and is stabbed through the heart which ends the curse. But Amber is transformed into a fae version of herself because the fae fate along with the land made it so. Now Amber and Cadewyn get to live their happily ever after.
Amber is for sure a sweet girl but it's so unbelievable to me that she barely has a had thought about anything really. Cadewyn was meh and I'd give the romance the same, but maybe that was appropriate for a winter court story. I think it would've been better to add more explanations and information here and there to fully flesh out the story. I thought there was so much there with the curse and the other fae that could've been better explored as well instead of that word salad of names and introductions to the other fae court VIPs that we got at the end. Some inconsistencies can be explained away but were left out there without tying them up. Overall, it wasn't really for me.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
The king of the Winter Court faces a dilemma when a curse is cast upon his kingdom and he needs to sacrifice a human who is pure of heart in order to save his kingdom, and his people. Only problem is, the woman he needs to sacrifice is his mate. The idea behind this book is good and it's certainly a light, enjoyable read with dual perspectives (something I always enjoy), however I found it lacking in depth and character development. That being said, I know that this is the first of what is supposed to be a series, so maybe future books will carry a bit more depth, history and character building. As for this one, it's easily enjoyable but I wasn't enamoured by anything or anyone as I didn't get much in the way of background of any of the characters, little history of the fae land, just a brief description of how it was broken up and the rulers, so I didn't development any attachments to anyone or anything. If you are looking for a light, easy read then this is a solid choice as it's enjoyable and fast paced.
I am part of a big community of readers that LOVE a good journey to Faerie. This story did not disappoint!
It's difficult to not like Amber, and even knowing the motivations for King Cadewyn taking her back to his kingdom, it's hard not to feel for the guy. He's just trying to save his realm after all. There's drama, that wonderful feeling of being dropped into a lush mythology and some truly steamy romantic tension.
If you are a fan of fae / human romance, this is a great choice!
The Winter Court is under a court. To save his Kingdom King Cadewyn needs a sacrifice. What happens when that sacrifice is also his mate? Amber is a great character and was taken from her home and into the Winter Court. While there she develops feelings for the king. Plenty of creatures and action with some steam. This was a great story. Loved it! I am voluntarily reviewing an arc.
This was an interesting read. I really had high hopes for this book, as I really loved the blurb. It had high potential. But I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped. It was really hard to keep my interest.
I was disappointed by this book, and it makes me a little sad. The premise of the plot was good – the King of the Winter Court of the Fae must seek out a truly selfless human to sacrifice in order to free his lands of a curse that is quickly turning everything in sight into a black, searing ash… only to fall in love with her amidst the hijinks of the Fae courts and the local vicious monster population. But the execution is where this story quickly failed.
The writing came across as juvenile, and while there's something to be said for an easy read, that doesn't excuse the comically terrible and constant snow-blighted cursing constantly going on (see what I did there?) that sounded like a children's cartoon attempting to get around a PG-13 rating. Like, I get it, it's the Winter Court, haha, they all curse in frost-bitten… but it got old really fast.
There was also a distinct lack of tension in any form. The author was constantly making the characters reveal all of their thoughts in inner monologue, explaining everything, even when it didn’t need to be. At one point, one of the characters completely recapped the few hours for the reader, even though we'd just been through it. It was an incredibly lackadaisical way of stumbling through the story. It was such a shame! There was so much world-building right under the surface of the story, and it felt like the author just didn’t want to take the time to put effort into constructing the story the way it deserved. The characters were one-dimensional, and other than the main couple, served very little purpose to the plot for the most part.
Did I hate the book? No. It was cute. I liked the characters, even if I felt like I was reading fanfiction from a 14-year-old. I just wish more thought and time had been put into polishing it to make it into something truly worth reading instead of what I got, which was just a short whimsical story thrown together just enough to make sense. If you want a fun, easy read that doesn't require a lot of brain power to get through, then this book will serve that purpose, but I don’t think I'd pick up this author again.
