I promised my best friend I’d take care of his hellion of a sister. A sham marriage probably wasn’t what he had in mind.
Growing up, the three of us were inseparable. Now the only time she speaks to me is to tell me to get lost. Fair enough. Maybe I do go out of my way to make her mad, but I’d take her hate over her indifference any day.
But when it comes to a rodeo competition, we’re on the same side, for once. With a prize of $100,000, it would make her career—and she could finally give her mom the help she needs. Her skill and my horse are a winning combination. The only problem? The rider has to be the owner…or immediate family. The only way she can compete is as my wife.
She thinks our marriage is all for show, but there’s nothing fake about my feelings for her. I’m determined to make this marriage real. All she ever had to do was just say when.
Elizabeth Bright writes smart, passionate romance with heart, humor, and heat. "Sparkling prose...unrelentingly sharp...unabashedly nerdy." (Bookpage) When she's not writing stubborn heroines and the men who adore them, Elizabeth can be found hiking and rock climbing. She lives in Washington, D.C. with her two daughters, who are every bit as headstrong and wonderful as the characters she writes.
“She was a rainbow in a gray world, and the thing was, if you stood next to her long enough, you got the crazy idea that maybe you could be a rainbow, too.”
After the great book 1 in this series, I was eager to read the sequel. It was very good as well, a 4.5–5 star read – until it wasn’t. As so often, sex and a lack of communication skills got in the way.
It’s a shame because the beginning was so good. Braxton Hale, Essie Price and her brother Jack were best friends for many years in high school. But one day, when Essie and Brax were out hiking, something happened. You don’t know what it was, but they both refer to the day as the day the other one almost died. For unknown reasons, Brax withdrew and stopped being Essie’s friend as a result. After graduation, Essie started a career as a barrel racer and was on the road most of the time, Brax went to college to become a lawyer, Jack joined the army.
Fast forward 15 years. Essie has retired from the sport and is back in town, working as a horse trainer on Brax’s brother’s ranch. Essie and Brax’s relationship is still strained because they never talked about what happened and why Brax dumped his best friend, and they bicker a lot. Still, when Brax’s horse is due to compete at a horse show in a class that requires a relative to be the rider, they come up with the brilliant idea of a fake marriage. To make it believable, they have a wedding with a big party, and she moves into his house. The plan is to divorce after the show. In theory.
Clearly, they were not only friends, but secretly in love all those years ago. Brax, in particular, is still madly in love with Essie to this very day (and everyone but Essie knows it). He hopes to eventually turn the fake marriage into a real one. He is caring and thoughtful and very cute. Despite a few flaws (namely his tendency to run away in the middle of conversations and his sexual preferences), I liked him very much. Essie is also a likeable main character, and to watch their relationship deepen is great. At first. The problem is, they still don’t talk about the past, and when they start having sex, they hardly get anything else done. To make matters worse, Brax has a (slight) dominance kink and Essie has to beg a lot. (Still not my cup of tea).
In the last third, the story gets completely stupid. You finally find out what happened on that fateful day 15 years ago. Alas, you still don’t know why he pushed her away afterwards, because in the middle of their conversation he suddenly babbles about a promise to her brother – and off he goes. Luckily, her ex-boyfriend is on hand to make her husband jealous, and Brax is caveman enough to drag her back to his cave, er, house. Of course, they still don’t talk, but have sex instead. Some time later, after more back and forth, Brax finally reveals his reasons for withdrawing and the promise to Essie’s brother, and the explanation is pretty thin and ridiculous and not convincing at all.
However, I don’t begrudge them their HEA, because even though the story was lacking in the second half, I liked the first half and both MCs very much.
💓𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲: 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻🐴 💭This story got me hooked with its interesting premises. Essie, a former barrel racer, is in the middle of a heist; she’s trying to steal a champion stallion from a horrible drunk. Brax, her former childhood best friend, tries to stop her by buying the horse himself instead. And, long story short, they enter a marriage of convenience to win a competition and start living together. The thing is, Essie hates Brax for abandoning her 15 years ago. But Brax is determined to earn her forgiveness and make this marriage real…
✅I adore Essie! She is as feisty as James (the FMC from the first book) but in a different way but still endearing nonetheless. Their banter was so fun, I love how strong and independent she is despite the hurt she carries from being abandoned by her own father. There’s plenty of “My Wife” moments from Brax and some great spicy scenes!
❎The first half of the book was so good, but after I found out the reason for Brax cutting her off, it was just disappointing. And the amount of time Brax kept leaving her in the middle of an argument is driving me up the wall; he is, as Essie said, a COWARD. So in contrast to the first book, the communication in this book, is atrocious, to say the least.
✨Fortunately, the ending kinda almost makes it up, love the cameos from the previous book and the side character’s plot, now I’m so curious who will be getting a book next and with who?
New favorite series alert?! JUST SAY WHEN was so enjoyable and a great follow up to book 1; this time we have Adam's brother Brax and his bickering relationship with his ex-best friend Essie, a recently retired barrel racing rodeo queen. These two had great chemistry and they clearly both saw arguing as a form of foreplay and it did not disappoint once they finally gave into their desires. Once again, Bright's writing was so engaging and I was just swept up in the story and didn't want to put this down.
If you're looking for the perfect "he falls first, and harder" situation than look no further than Brax. This man has been pining since they were teenagers at first glance he seemed like an uptight, rule follower but underneath his protective walls he loved so deeply that he was willing to give up everything to make sure Essie was happy. Compared to his brother, Brax was more cowboy adjacent, since he was a lawyer by day, but that didn't mean he didn't love the Lodestar Ranch or that he couldn't rope some cattle (or a woman) when necessary. He was the perfect steadfast and reliable partner to show Essie that she could be loved truly and forever.
As for Essie, she was a complete spitfire and I loved her! She was outspoken, not afraid to take chances, devoted to her horses, and a little bit messy. Her walls were sky high due to a disinterested father and a desire to prove she could be independent and not rely on anyone for help. It took her a long time to see that people caring for her and protecting her wasn't a weakness but the greatest strength. She definitely made Brax work for their marriage of convenience but don't worry, he seemed to enjoy it just as much as she did.
I'm excited to read the last Hale brother's book next because I have a feeling Zach is going to be a lot of fun to read about. And I'm hoping we get Jack's book at some point too because he certainly had me intrigued even though he was only on-page for a few chapters.

I loveddd this book. Not only do I fully relate to Essie but I loved how Brax was there for her. They pushed each other’s buttons but you could see how much they loved each other. I do wish they would have just talked instead of drawing things out. I loveddd the fake marriage angle and some good light spice.
The fact that they both relate to the incident as the day that the other almost died was so heartbreakingly cute.
Also the secret tattoo!! He hasn’t been with anyone else since she moved back home, crying!!
Aww Brax and Essie 🥹🙌🏻 Love love love them. Just simply loved how Brax would do anything for Essie even when she herself says she's got it all under control... He just wants to be there for her. He knows and respects that she can handle things herself, it's just him showing her how much he cares and loves her...without straight forward saying it. And Essie, LOVE her. A true cowgirl who can handle anything and everything. Doesn't back from a challenge. And hates asking for help. The tense friendship between her and Brax was just the best. And when we finally learn what happened, why there was distance all of a sudden between the two...you couldn't help, but understand...and respect Brax for it honestly.
And freaking Jack, Essie's brother 🤣 Need more of him. Your typical protective brother, but also best from of Brax. His reaction to the last minute wedding was hilarious. Sorry Brax.
Just simply loved this book. Enjoyed it. I cried and laughed. The spice was perfect. Brax is 🔥
I adored the banter in this one. It was cute and silly and laugh out loud funny. It was very clear from the beginning that Brax was down bad for Essie and always had been. I love that. I love a man secretly in love and just dying to be with her. This was a quick read full of heart and spice and everything nice. I loved it.
I love a smitten man, and this hero has spent a lifetime loving his girl. Though the "it's always been you" trope isn't my favorite when the couple's history is messy, I'm a big fan of marriage of convenience romances and this series as a whole. If you love a hero who has just been waiting for the right time to get his girl, then this one's for you. It's light, sexy, and swoony, with a childhood friends to enemies to spouses to lovers romance that's got banter and plenty of sexual tension. I loved that our heroine was such a spitfire, and that our hero knew exactly how to handle his girl. They were friends for years before becoming estranged, and that history is a great foundation for their (kind of) fake marriage. It was easy to see the ways they were perfect together, which made all those wasted years hurt even more. The vibes are lighthearted and playful overall, though there's definitely an edge of angst to their interactions. While the tropes weren't the ideal match for me, I enjoyed the story and am very excited for more from the series.
The story follows Essie and Brax, two people who bicker so much that it's easy to forget that they used to be the best of friends. Brax ended their friendship at 17 without ever explaining why, and that's made every interaction since fraught with tension. Fifteen years later, Brax is now a buttoned-up attorney and Essie is a firecracker of a rodeo star. When a horse brings them together, Brax realizes that it might be in both of their best interests to get married (it's complicated). While Essie may believe that it's a temporary marriage of convenience, Brax knows that there's no way he'd voluntarily let his girl go again. As the two navigate their ever-changing relationship and move in together, it's difficult to remember all the reasons why their marriage was meant to be fake.
I loved the first book in this series of interconnected standalones, and we got a feel for Brax and Essie's dynamic in that story, so I was pretty excited for this. Marriage of convenience is one of my favorites, and I'm definitely a fan of "he falls first" scenarios. Those elements were excellent - you could absolutely feel Brax's love for Essie throughout, and it was fun to watch her opinion of their relationship slowly change. They had tons of chemistry, and there are plenty of spicy scenes. I was less enthused by their history, especially once we got to know more... it always drives me crazy when the hero thinks he knows what's best, and this is for sure one of those situations. Very much personal preference, but I couldn't help but bemoan the 15 years they were apart and all the time they spent with other people. I appreciated that we didn't hear much about Brax's previous relationships, at least. There was so much about this romance that I really loved, and the cast of characters is fantastic. I can't wait for the rest of the series, because this was very good overall. Definite Elsie Silver vibes, while still feeling like something fresh and unique.
4.5★ - We’re back at Lodestar Ranch and this book ticked so many boxes for me, plus it had one of my favourite ever micro tropes which was done to perfection. It was heartfelt and witty with a healthy dose of spice.
I absolutely loved Brax + Essie and was completely invested in their story right from the start. The verbal sparring, pranks and banter between these two was so good, I found myself giggling at my kindle multiple times. They had known each other for most of their lives and I enjoyed the progression they made from best friends to loathing to lovers through forced proximity that a marriage of convenience can provide. The flashbacks throughout helped build their history and understand just how deep their connection went.
I loved Essie instantly. She was strong and independent, could hold her own and had a sarcastic sense of humour I could totally relate to. She was so determined to not need or rely anyone but herself and I loved how she learnt to lean on Brax and the way they became a team. While she battled with being “too much” he showed her how he could never get enough and I adored them together.
Now I love a cowboy, but how about a small town attorney who’s a cowboy at heart, buys a horse to help the girl he’s always loved and can lasso more than just a cow (👀🤭)… yep. Brax Hale’s love language was acts of service and he will have you swooning on your couch. I melted at the way this man did so much for Essie, while doing it quietly and instinctively, despite the animosity that had developed between them. He never wavered, was steady, showed up and would have (and did) do anything for her.
I really enjoy this whole tribe and there were so many great moments with the Hale brothers and Essie’s sewing club girl gang. We get a good dose of Adam + James here as well and I’m looking forward to who might be next in this series!
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁: small town romance, childhood friends to enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, brother’s best friend, secret tattoo, it’s always been you.
I enjoyed this one better than book 1. And I don't typically enjoy second chance romances or childhood friends to lovers ... which should tell you something.
Essie is just the right amount of sassy without being a full on bitch to everybody she encounters. She's got just enough brat in her that her dynamic with Brax fits. He's got just enough dom in him to make that dynamic play out nicely in and out of the bedroom.
The only thing is that this felt like a bingo card for contemporary romance tropes. We started out with childhood friends to lovers, to enemies to lovers, to a fake dating marriage of convenience, to second-chance romance. BINGO!
We're talking about a very quick read here... and ALL of that was somehow crammed in it?
It could have felt unnatural, but somehow it wasn't the weirdest thing ever. There was enough backstory to make all of these elements work at least a little.
I wasn't the hugest fan of the flashbacks - sometimes they work in stories, and sometimes they're pointless. I didn't really find these ones all that worthwhile.
And the mystery surrounding why they fell out as friends at 17 wasn't all it was built up to be. I was expecting something dramatic or catastrophic and I guess it COULD have been...but it really wasn't.
It kind of all just hinges on the fact that Brax is sort of a chickenshit (a term even his brother uses to describe him). Every time he and Essie try to have a conversation about their past or their current relationship or their future he runs like the cops are chasing him. It wasn't an attractive trait, to be honest.
All of that being said, I did enjoy this. With a few strategic tweaks, this could easily have been a glorious little 5 star read. As it is, it's a definite improvement over book 1, so there's that.
You had me at marriage convenience. And, add some banter and I am hooked. I love this series, and starting with book 3 and working my way around has been interesting. I do not ever want to leave Lodestar Ranch.
4.75⭐️ My SHAYLAASSSS, loved them so much. She thought he was marrying her to help her, he actually married her because he always wanted her to be his 🙇🏻♀️🫠
Quotes:
Essie was here. Wherever Essie was, that’s where I wanted to be, too. I just needed a reason.
And my heart did that thing again, that stupid, stupid thing. My wife, it whispered.
“Jeans and cowboy boots on the bottom. Button down and tie on top.” She air circled the items with her fingertip. “It’s the clothing equivalent of a mullet. Business up top. Party on the bottom.”
“And when we’re done here, we’re going to the jewelry store to get you a ring, because here’s the thing, hellion, and it’s a very real part of being married to me. Even if your heart isn’t taken, your body sure as fuck is, the same as mine, and you better remember that. While we’re married, it’s me or the vibrator. There are no other options, understand? And we’re putting rings on our fingers so there’s no confusion.”
“Then why doesn’t he think I’m amazing?” she asked damply. “Because he’s small, honey. He’s so fucking small. And you… you’re bigger than the whole sky.”
“I can’t be satisfied with anything less than everything. Not when it comes to you. ”
I mostly liked this book but I didn't love the MMC who has a habit of protecting the FMC and making unilateral decisions for her that affect the both of them because he knows what's best and honestly, that's the kind of patriarchal bullshit that irritates the hell out of me in a romance. Treat her like the adult she is and let her make her own choices. (Admittedly, one of those choices came when she was 17 and she wasn't technically an adult but NEITHER WAS HE). Anyway, hot sex but the MMC annoyed me and a little bit more grovel was needed.
Good gods. Elizabeth has done it AGAIN. I had the opportunity to ARC read for A Cowboy in the Streets and I am so thankful and glad I was able to ARC read for Just Say When.
I just am obsessed with the Lodestar Ranch series. Cowboy Romances are one of my favorites in the romance category and Elizabeth nails it every time.
Essie pulls a heist to steal a stallion from a horrible caretaker (screw him), she thinks she gets away with it only to find out Brax saves her and buys the horse himself. This whole thing ends up leading them in a fake marriage in order for her to compete in a competition with Pirate (the Stallion). I was absolutely hooked and I did not want to put this book down at all.
Brax & Essie. GOD I LOVE them. Their banter & their connection was just so enjoyable. I love Essie’s sassy personality, but she also was so badass and independent. I admired her a lot and her humor had me cackling multiple times as I was reading. Brax. Man that MANS MOUTH. The small town attorney and part time rancher was just a whole sexy combination that I was sooo there for. I was swooning for him. He was so caring and he loved so hard for Essie. Like seriously that man was over the moon for her even if she “hated” him. He is the kind of man you can count on to show up and that’s exactly who and what Essie needed in her life.
I am so excited for what’s next in this series and I can’t wait to see whose story will be next? I genuinely don’t know who it will be because there’s so many possibilities but I love all the side characters so I am down for WHOEVER.
Tropes: 📖 Small Town Romance 📖 Attorney x Cowgirl 📖 Former Childhood Best Friends 📖 Marriage of Convenience 📖 “My Wife” “My Husband” & so many more good tropes!!
I’m not kidding when I say y’all should pick this series up because both books are incredible. Thank you Elizabeth for the opportunity to ARC read for you again !! 🫶🏼🧡
⭐ 4.5 🌶️ 2 🥵 Spicy chapters: 20, 23, 27-20, 35 📚 Tropes/Themes: flashbacks, first love, it's always been you, "fuck it", marriage of convenience, forced proximity, lawyer X horse trainer/rider, brothers bestie, childhood best friends, friends to enemies to lovers, small town, cowboy 👀 Dual POV 1st person 💔 Triggers: mentions of DV and animal abuse, parental abandonment, parental death
💬 Well, per usual I devoured this book. Actually according to my timer/tracker thing it took me 3 hours and 12 minutes to read this. I don't think I can adequately explain how feral I go for these books 😂 The ooey gooey feelings, the swooning, the snark, the butterflies. I just love it so damn much 🥹 (it's ok, you can side eye me. I'm side eyeing myself lmao)
I very much loved this story, especially because I'm such a sucker for the tropes. As previously mentioned, the swoon factor was cranked to 11 and I spent most of the book smiling. I didn't even hate that Essie is stubborn and hard-headed, which is something I don't normally like in romance books.
However 😬 Brax's character seemed a little disjointed to me when it came to the spicy stuff? Maybe disjointed isn't the right word, more like he acted in a way that seemed out of character. Almost like I didn't expect his more aggressive side? I'm really not explaining it well 🙈 Like the "fuck it" moment. There wasn't a whole lot of lead up to it to me, and then I expected him to be like a squishy little cinnamon roll in the sack but he def was more like an alphahole lite.
I'm not complaining about him being like that (def love an alpha in the sheets 💦) all I'm saying is it just threw me for a loop. I still loved this book and I still recommend this series to anybody because it is beyond phenomenal.
Tropes: Small town Childhood best friends to enemies to lovers Brother's Best Friend Marriage of convenience Lawyer X retired barrel Racer Dual POV
I love the Lodestar Ranch series! In Book 1, I was obsessed with Adam... and I had no idea I would fall so hard for "rule follower" brother Braxton! But I did! Brax was the MMC in didn't know I needed. He comes off as a stickler, but the man is holding on to past trauma that has changed the whole projectory of his life and all I want to do is hold him... while running my fingers across his chest tattoo lol
Brax was best friends with Essie and her twin growing up. But a near death experience cause Brax to seemingly push Essie away. Which worked out for her career-wise! She's a champion barrel Racer who's recently retired and working on Brax's family ranch. But ever thr fiesty one, Essie steals a horse which snowballs a marriage of convenience between her and Brax. Will they finally admit the feelings they've had since they were teens?
I loved Essie! She has rainbow hair, loves horses, likes to irritate Brax, and stab things at sewing club. Haha she's my type of bff. I love her fiestiness, her passion, and her courage.. and she may have daddy issues. She's so real and the banter and relationship between Essie and Brax starts as the best slow burn. You're just yelling at them to both get over themselves and to pick each other! I loved them.
After being sick and just in an overall slump I was finally feeling better and finished Just Say When. It was just what I needed to get out of my post sick slump!
A cowboy romance will do it every time! And boy did Just Say When did exactly that. Essie is a spit fire who won’t take no for an answer, and Brax is a rule follower who made a promise to her twin to keep her safe. From start to finish I couldn’t stop laughing at the banter between Essie and Brax. Even the handful of times he left her speechless, he left me speeches as well. 👀 I really enjoyed that even though they started off rocky there was no earth shattering thing to break them up. They communicated and admitted when they were wrong. The love they have for each other outweighing anything that could keep them apart.
“Because I knew how it would be. The way it always is with us. Too much, and not enough” -Braxton
If you are looking for an easy to fall in love with cowboy romance then pick up Just Say When! I can’t wait to see what Lodestar ranch has in store next! 😉Thank you Elizabeth Bright for the opportunity to read Just Say When!
I am a huge fan of Elizabeth’s writing - this was such a lovely comfort read for me. As a bedraggled toddler mum (hey mamas, I see you), I just need some escapism. Elizabeth’s writing is pure escapism.
What I loved: ❤️ The tension at the start ❤️ The flashbacks to their teen years ❤️ Essie’s sass ❤️ Family relationships and characters from the previous book reappearing (I love you Hannah. Adam I missed you 🥲) ❤️ Brax is just bloody lovely - both lead characters are very human and yet he’s still quite dreamy ❤️ I’m really in love with the community/world they live in ❤️ The spice scenes are juuuust right - I had just finished several romance books where the nooky descriptions had left me cringing my eyeballs out, I needed this book to get me back on track. Consider the book smut troll who lives in my heart satisfied by “Just Say When”
What I wanted more of: 🌈 More descriptions of Brax’s body-ody-ody please, because I lied, that little book smut troll is clearly never fully satisfied. 🌈 Flashbacks of what exactly happened after the near-death experience and how that then led to Jack warning him off etc.
I can’t wait for the next book. I’m assuming it will be Zack? Will she be Hannah?! Will she be Chloe?! Will she be someone new?! I can’t wait.
If you enjoy her cowboy romance then definitely also check out her small-town romance series “Hart’s Ridge” - I binged it in about a week.
Genuinely enjoyed this more than I expected to!! I love the burn of an enemies to lovers story and the payout was crazy in this book, I felt so satisfied 😭 I wish we saw a little more of Jack in this story, but I think he has his own book??
Also BRAXTON “you’ve always been too much for me, so I guess I’ll have to keep pushing myself to be more so I can be enough for you” HALE is genuinely the blueprint 😩
Excited to read about Zack and Hannah in the next book!!
4.5⭐️ I just love this series so so much!! Brax and Essie are so clearly each other’s person, and I ate it up!
What I loved❤️ -marriage of convenience -brother’s best friend (but also her best friend until he wasn’t👀) -he’s a rule following lawyer, she’s a wild retired barrel racer convinced she’s too much -she’s a little bit of a brat and he loves it -secret tattoo
Childhood friends to strangers to lovers will always do it for me! These two were so cute together and the push and pull was done perfectly! Love the family dynamic, the girl’s friend group, the banter between the brothers and the strong willed fmc!
Essie and Brax were best friends growing up. Until the end of junior high when he suddenly seems to despise her. Now, over a decade later, she has chosen to move on from her very accomplished barrel racing career to something more fulfilling back home. Which lands her at Brax’s family ranch as an apprentice training reigning horses.
Queue the suppressed feelings, banter and all things that come along with forced proximity.
