Book two

There is one major issue that I have with this book and one minor issue that stood out and kept bugging me.
I'll start with the minor. Prices, yes prices. They paid for lunch with a gem worth ten gold. Wasn't a feast just a regular normal lunch, so why would it cost ten gold? Another lunch they spend a handful more of the same type of gems to get a private room. They spend gold like it is pennies. It just doesn't fit and kept pulling me from the story. The economy should collapse if it takes that much gold just for lunch.

Okay now my major issue,
I'm not a kid, why does everyone treat me like a kid? This is complete trash and should never have made it into the story. He is fifteen. In a world like that and a society like that he would be considered to be an adult by even the young age of twelve. Our own history is full of examples. Alexander the Great was sixteen and leading massive armies in battle. So the constant references to the MC being a child never fit in the story.
I should let her know I'm fifteen isn't a thought that should have crossed his mind. It wouldn't have bothered anyone else much less the older woman that showed a little interest in the MC.
You train them like they are adults, you give them missions like they are adults, they kill like adults, so trying to then turn around and say but they are just children is so off putting that it is gag worthy.
They are also slaves so age really doesn't matter to anyone in that society.
Why is the seal tied to an arbitrary age number? Makes absolutely no sense.
Technically the human brain doesn't stop developing till around twenty-five years old, so it would make more sense if the seal released when the brain finished developing instead of some arbitrary number that society claims you are an adult.
Which also makes no sense. The Empire seems to run on child soldiers.

This just makes everything very odd and confusing.
If you can ignore that the story is just okay. The fifth prince is not believable at all.
The phony assassination attempt was stupid and came out of left field. That "twist" in the story just didn't fit and didn't make sense.
I want to test my grandsons guard so let's send assassins because there is no way an accident could happen and the prince could be killed. Just no!

3/10 Just to much stuff didn't fit the rest of the feel of child slave soldiers.

Look, I know this is litrpb and the point is for the MC to be kinda op.
But this one is just too self-indulgent even for litrpg.
Usually I want to be impressed by an average MC with a few trump cards overcoming overwhelming odds.
But this is an overwhelming MC overcoming average odds.
It's all just too easy, he is too successful, too ahead in the game for tension to develop properly.
Not only is he incredibly smart with eidetic memory etc. (which is already kind of a no-go trope knowadays even in power fantasy) he is the chosen one on top of it. I was kinda on board with the whole iron card turning out to be secretly totally awesome. But the author can not stop stacking more and more awesome traits to the point of it becoming completely ridiculous. Everything is just handed to him from every direction.
It's kind of like watching a smurf with cheats stomp noobs. It's funny at first but it becomes boring and annoying very quickly.

In addition there are various inconsistencies that I could maybe overlook in a normal book but when it comes to litrpg I have higher expectations about consistency. For example, the iron wing is supposed to be this uber secret hidden arm of the military that nobody knows about. But as soon as the MC becomes a member, suddenly everyone knows about it as if it has always been common knowledge.
In short, the rules change with the authors' whims which kinda kills a litrpg story for me which has a very heavy emphasis on rules.
There are lots of examples of sloppy inconsistencies like that.

The first book was a promising start but this continuation is just kinda weak.

Ohhhh wow! Soooooooo awesomtastic! I adored Crow's Fortune! It might be hard to believe how much I love deck-building litRPG adventures. And Seth Ring stepped it up a notch! I know 'cause I've read every deck-building litRPG I can find! I can't believe that I missed this when it was released, it wasn't until I downloaded Healing Skies that I realized my error and quickly got the second book! This book isn't crunchy either, something that can clutter up a story. This is Mateo's story as he trains and gets stronger. But Mateo has an edge, Corvus his bonded Spirit Crow. With Corvus help he learns, becoming stronger, far faster than expected! And wow do I love Crows! I even have a Crow tapestry on my wall...
So grab this litRPG 'cause the beginning of Healing Skies makes soooooooo much more sense now! And just 'cause ya otta!

Here's a few quotes that amused me:

"...which means her potential is tremendous. Plus, she’s clearly in charge of this murder, which means you’ll get a lot more benefit than just a single crow.”

“What’s the difference between a one- and two-headed snake?” Mateo asked. “Well, one of them has an extra head,” Teller said unhelpfully."

"All my ideas are good. You’re just too thick to understand their value most of the time.”

“I picked you because it was that or spend the next few thousand years caged. I picked you because regardless of your abilities, I’m confident in myself."

“The most dangerous man on the battlefield is the man who stays alive.”

“Isaac, you hold the blood of Kell, blood that demands a spine."

I am really enjoying this series. I initially was really excited by a military based story line with Mateo being part of an elite military group going on campaigns and while it has quickly changed from that I am for the most part happy with the direction.

To start with things I liked: the world is so big there is so much storyline potential, the characters are well written, and I think the throne competition is a good plot line. Overall the story is just really exciting and I like the setting.

What I don’t like: this seems to be one of Seth’s sloppier books I noticed more grammar issues than typical (for example calling the main character the wrong name,) contradictions to plot points previously written, lack of detail about cards being location based head/arms/legs (which I thought was super interesting combat system,) and as others have mentioned the value of the currency is so all over the place it is distracting. Additionally, this story initially was set in an all human world, but out of nowhere multiple fantasy races were added in a pretty sloppy manner.

Biggest worry with this book is that it is going to become too much like Seth’s other series. You already see to much bleed over from Tower and Dreamers Throne and I worry going further down some of these magic plot lines will pull it away from being a very interesting story about an empire with an exciting army and fighting system.

Guilty pleasure reading:
"A good change of environment... it has the right tones of relational touch points as well as skills and people underestimating him."
My Experience & Analysis:
In this second installment, Mateo moves undercover, which provides a gratifying shift in stakes. I particularly liked the focus on his tenacity—his need to first understand the problem and scope it out before acting. Seeing him set up a "smooth and non-violent invasion" using his unique skills was a highlight for me.
What Worked:
Animal Perspectives: The element of seeing through and controlling animals made for some fun, different perspectives.
Systemic Exploration: The book touches on the role of the black market and corruption in a way that’s quite philosophically interesting—essentially asking if one man's corruption is another's strategic preparation.
The "Savant" at Work: It’s great to see Mateo working his way around people who are explicitly stronger than him.
Critiques:
Age vs. Capability: I think the age of the protagonist needs to be about five years older; there’s a gap between the age expectations and the trust/capability of his skills.
The "Chosen One" Trap: Because this is a web serial cut into a book, the ending feels a bit lacking. It pushes too far into the "chosen one" area, where people become subservient in a way that breaks the "underestimated" element I liked so much in the first book.

The second book in the Chain of Feathers series by Seth Ring.

It's a page turner! Mateo has completed his basic training and is now being trained as a spy. He learns how the spy network runs and then is sent into the field to work with two experienced agents. Only his secret mission can't be shared with them.

They wonder why he's so standoffish and doesn't ask for help. Then he starts sharing and they're amazed.

Don't miss this series if you like epic fantasy with the main character getting progressively stronger!

The forging continues!

Matteo’s forging continues and he’s up to his ears in intrigue! And despite his desire to stay anonymous he seems to keep drawing attention to himself. It was fun to see him grow some more in power as well as age, and the forward path that we are following should make for some interesting interactions coming in the future. Definitely looking forward to the next book and seeing what the title is implying!

Black ops in a Fantasy world

Great read, but it follows a strange narrative. Usually the MC is driving the story, but it seems like this one is driven by duty. A lot happens, but none of it is what you'd expect in a fantasy novel. I'd call this story more of a military fantasy tale, involving a special wing of the military similar to Israel's Mossad or the US Rangers. It's fun.

Decent sequel

All in all, I enjoyed this book. The one thing I will say as a critique, is that I feel like the main character just rapidly advanced in regards to his social power all within the span of several days. I hope that the author can successfully navigate through this rapid progression Without making it seem that the main character no longer has to struggle to reach his goals.

Great continuation!

I enjoyed getting to watch the main character continue to grow throughout the book. I also found it funny how the feather missions intermingled but had to be kept separate. I might be spoiling the book. But I found it full of action and training. Also some new and old characters! I can't wait for the next book. I'm really looking forward to it.

Really liked this series so far

This is a very interesting series. I personally enjoy the main character and his "feather." The story is very well developed and constantly moves forward. There are lots of moving parts, but the book covers them well enough that the reader doesn't get overwhelmed. Highly recommend this series.

Don't hesitate on this one!

Honestly, if Seth Ring ever writes a bad story, I'll eat my hat. Mateo is such an interesting character to explore as is the world he is part of. I've not liked or been interested in any of the deck-building novels out there, but this series has been great so far.

He was really good can't wait for the next one

It's actually funny, but I was hoping for a little bit more stat sheet I think he only did it twice. I think it could have been done at least two or three more times. Also I think he could have connected with more Beast and kept the rat with him

Another good read

Definitely not as good or engaging as the first book, this is filled with long-drawn out details about the iron wing, the empire and various political machinations, but very little action. It’s probably setting the stage for what I hope will be an epic book 3, but will I be bothered to read the third book after this book - not sure.

Starts strong, but quality drops

After the first few initial chapters, the writing becomes sloppy, and the story feels hurried and unauthentic. Disappointing after the enjoyable first book.

Awesome Stuff

This story of a young man who is taken as a slave soldier who has a photographic memory was a fantastic read. He and his crew are reunited and have their first assignment. Protect a prince who doesn’t want to rule, just paint. Fantastic Stuff

I recommend this book, very interesting. 😃. Anyhow. Try this series, its worth it.

(20 words is a bit much for leaving a review (mobile). I think we should decide by ourselves how much we want to write, this msg is for Amazon if they are "listening")

felt like a bridge

Writing is great and I am enjoying the concept and overall story. I didn’t deduct any stars because I did enjoy it, but it felt almost like a bridge between stories, rather than a full story on its own.

I was thinking that the 2nd book was gonna have sophomore slump but it kept me entertained and added new elements I wasn’t expecting. Books that keep a sliver of mystery throughout always make me want/need to discover what comes next.

Numbers and plot by omission

The numbers binder around again.
And the plot mostly advances by people forgetting to talk about things or leaving things out. Terrible plot advancement.

Overall, the characters are likeable, the world is interesting, the pace is good.

Probably 3.5/5

It was better than the first, though I enjoy the parts with the trio together more than anything else, and they were apart for a decent amount of the book. Still, there were some satisfying moments of progress and power, which is fundamental to the genre, so it scratched that itch.

Superb

I thought the first book was brilliant but book two is better , the feather are split up and Rose and Eric are away honing their skills whilst Mateo continues his climb to greatness
