Did it keep my interest? 4. Shea delivers a fun, ridiculous novelette. And for only the second time this year I read a book with my eyes!
Did I enjoy the topic? 4. Such a stupid theme. So happy Shea Serrano is in our world to deliver bad ass absurdity.
Was the dialogue realistic? 4. It sounded like a real trial. Or at least a trial I’ve seen on television. Except it involved a werewolf. Humanizing the werewolf so that they blends into society was great.
Would I recommend to Jen (smart, discerning reader)? 3 Our son Turned me on to Shea’s writing, so I’m thinking if he told Jen this was a family book club, then she would read it. If I suggested it, no way.
Would I have recommended to my Mom (read for entertainment)? 3. See above. Gramma loved her grandkids. If Joey recommended it, she’d read it.
I love Shea Serrano. I love the way he markets his books. The style of his writing. The Secret Email Club. His want to write stories he wants to read no matter how bonkers the idea is. I love that he’s experimenting more and more with fiction. Shea Serrano is one of those people who you not only admire but want to emulate.
Werewolf Lawyer is a bonkers concept. A lawyer but for werewolves. A legal drama. Cool. Easy sell.
It’s a fun read too. Shea did his legal homework. It’s not my favorite thing he’s ever written (could have probably used one more edit) but the back half of the book really cooks.
It’s a funny concept that takes itself waaaay too seriously and that makes it all the more fun. Let Shea write whatever he wants to write and I’m going to read it every time.
Werewolf Lawyer is exactly the wild, hilarious, and heartwarming ride you’d expect from Shea Serrano. This book blends the absurdity of a werewolf navigating the legal world with deep, meaningful moments that will catch you off guard. Serrano’s signature humor and knack for creating relatable, lovable characters shine through, making this an unputdownable read. It’s part legal drama, part supernatural thriller, and all-around fun. Whether you’re a longtime Serrano fan or new to his work, Werewolf Lawyer will have you laughing, cheering, and surprisingly emotional by the end. Highly recommended!
I’m giving this a 3.5. I love Shea and his writing. This was a good blend of being way too serious but also not serious at all. It felt like reading a small novelization of a phoenix Wright Ace Attorney game. Sort of bonkers with a rather Law & Order predictable plot, but just an overall fun time. I’d love more Thomas Atwell content in the future with maybe just a smidge less dialogue.
He gets a little bit better with everything. The characters feel a bit more fleshed out and his tone (which is his greatest strength as a writer) delights as always.
I can’t wait to see what comes next from him because eventually it’s going to be something so special that we’ll feel like fools in hindsight for not seeing the progression.
A brisk courtroom drama set in a world where werewolf transformations have become exceedingly mundane. I had no idea what to expect from such a concept, but I must say: this was good!
Pure entertainment — predictable at times, but it earns bonus points for the novelty of being set in Houston.
