Fun light reading. A few observations. While young men in the wild west were doing things in the adult world in their teens compared to youths today, it is a little far fetched to think that a 16 yr old would be leading a multi strike force of federal and local LEOs in the second largest city in the US. Like where did he get the knowledge and experience to do this? It doesn't come naturally, one has to be trained. No sense in beating this to death, it's fiction. Second, leaving the book with the hero seriously wounded smacks of the movie serials in the late '40s when I was young-leaving the young damsel tied to the railroad tracks with oncoming train barreling down was a sure way of getting you to the theater next Saturday, or in this case the 3rd book. Also, the book never seemed to end -always need to remember that there were more bad guys to catch. Something that I saw in a review of the first book was that the prices of stuff in the early 1870s seems awfully high-this was also equally present in this 2d book. I think if young Card was worth ca. $125K then, that would be the equivalent of millions today. Despite all of the above, I will probably purchase the 3rd book.

Card became engaged to Jean Marshall on his trip to carry out his promise to his family to bring their murderers to justice. He receives an urgent msg from Jake Marshall to return. There he finds Jean on her death bed. After she is buried he receives a special commission from the President to retrieve the kidnapped 11 yr old niece of Attorney General Carpenter. This was an action packed adventure with Card becoming a Special United States Marshal for the Department of Justice to catch all the characters involved in this kidnapping. A note of humor to me is the directions to find your way to a certain spot, i.e. go east 6 miles then turn north at the big oak tree hit by lightning. I can remember my Dad giving similar directions in the "olden days".

Card returns to his farm after fulfilling his promise to his mother. His fiance gets fatally ill, before Card can get everything ready, leaving him alone once again. When the Attorney General of the US's niece is kidnapped, Card is made a Special US Marshal to get her home safely. Very interesting read.

Really Good but a Little Long

I think I enjoyed this more than the first one. It was really good. However, there were several opportunities to end the book, but it kept going on. Overall, very good though.

Better than the first

I'm thinking this author is finding his place. His writing is getting much better or I'm just used to his style. Enjoyed this and look forward to the next book.

DNF- liked the first book ok but there just felt like so much filler. Like overly detailed accounts of how the characters get from point a to b instead of focusing on the interesting bits
