All Roads Lead to Sovereign Mountain

Freya Hatfield knows one thing for certain—to never, ever get tangled up with a man like Deacon Ryder.

Growing up surrounded by her harsh stepfather, Aiden Hatfield, and his sons, she vowed to not to repeat the same cycle as her mother.

But after leaving her home in the Appalachian Mountains to move to rural Montana, six months later she finds herself the obsession of their neighbor—a much older, rough, tattooed rancher with a dark past and a willingness to do what it takes to get what he wants.

He’s everything she swore she’d never accept.

But all it takes is one fateful meeting on a stormy night, and she can’t stop coming back to him.

When circumstances pit Aiden and Deacon against each other, Freya quickly becomes a bargaining chip in a harsh dispute.

And as Freya gives into Deacon’s obsession, they both find something so much darker than they expected.

And something sweet enough to fight for.

We go back to Soveriegn Mountain, and we see a different side to it this time. I was riveted the whole time, and I can't quite decide what I felt about it. But I know it's good. Haha! That's not the best explanation, I know. Yet I always find this author's writing to be so powerful. I am so impressed with how she uses obsession, sexual connection, and trauma bonding to tell a powerful story. I just sit there and stare, with a slack-jawed expression.

Both Deacon and Freya are from traumatic pasts. Well, for Freya, it's a traumatic present. She is trapped under her stepfather's boot, and there doesn't seem to be any hope for her. She may live and die in his home. But then, she catches Deacon Ryder's eye, and for better or worse, her life will never be the same.

I loved the subtle but powerful use of Daddy kink in this novel as well. How it helps heal the pain she has regarding that name and the way Deacon gives her her power back through her submission and his care for her. It was beautiful to see.

Finally, one of the issues I had about Westin, was for how similar it felt to Sovereign. I didn't want this series to just be the same story, with the same kinks over and over. To me, this was NOT the case with Deacon. There were different issues and traumas that we looked into the heart of here. I think that it gives me both what I loved about Sovereign, but also dug into fresh pain and pleasure.

I enjoyed it so much and I can't wait to see what is coming sext.

I don’t know… maybe my expectations were too high, but I waited months for this, so can you blame me?

Compared to the other books, this one just felt kind of flat. The others had so much depth, tension, and energy—this one didn’t quite hit the same. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t leave a strong impression either.

I did enjoy a few moments, especially how sweet and caring he was toward her. That part was genuinely soft and swoon-worthy. But outside of that, nothing really stuck with me. I can barely remember most of it, which says a lot.

It was fine… just not what I hoped for.

Firstly, I would like to say a huyuuuuuge thank you to Raya Morris Edwards and her publishing team for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review.

Deacon was a character I did not see coming, his story is quite traumatising but that didn’t stop him. He was obsessed with Freya from the moment he knew she existed and frankly, that’s all I really wanted.

This is a SPICY dark cowboy romance. Crank up the rating from Sovereign and Westin X100 because Deacon was pure filth. Raya has definitely kept us readers fed.

🥵Touch her & 💀
🥵Daddy k!nk
🥵BDSM
🥵He worships her
🥵Age gap (she’s 22, he’s 40)
🥵St@lking
🥵Strong FMC
🥵Mirror & suspension play
🥵He has a br33ding kink

I will say this is definitely a longer storyline in the Sovereign mountain series. There’s quite a lot of information but in this instance it works as it helped understand characters actions.

3.5 - 4 stars!

Was this book hot AF? Absolutely. The amount of heat that this book had had me feeling things😂.

But I always find myself baffled by BDSM romances. On the one hand there was a part of this story that tugged at me and pulled visceral feelings I didn’t know how to process. On the other hand my brain rejected the power play and my “I’m a strong independent woman and I won’t be told what to do” came out.

Maybe it was the introduction of a “contract” that was off putting. That the relationship started out on a contractual basis and I convince myself passion and real emotion is lacking. Or maybe I actually found the entire idea of a BDSM relationship sexy and I felt shameful for liking it. Because any other romances I read with a dominant male is cat nip to me. Although, the heroines tend to be fierce.

You obviously didn’t come here to listen to me spill my inner guts to you so I’ll just say I both loved and disliked this story😂. But Deacon was the ultimate dominant that spoke his feelings through play and care and I was putty for it. He was just everything.

“Because I’m about to give you the most disrespectful fucking you’ve ever had, and I want you to feel beautiful for it,” I say. “Remember when you’re gasping for air and begging like a whore that I can be gentle.”

Freya was the part of this story I didn’t like. But I also loved her. It was tumultuous for me to say the least. I loved her naivety and general kind heartedness but I felt her to be meek at times as well. I couldn’t connect to her or relate. And maybe that’s the heart of the issue. But when Deacon and Freya were together everything felt right.

All this to say, this story had all the heat I love and the suspense and action to keep me turning the pages. I’m kind of annoyed I didn’t start with the first book in this series but if you knew me, I’m just not about that life sometimes. It feels like this series is going to have a formula and I’m totally ok with that but I’ll likely feel the same way for everyone else’s stories. But BRING IT.

These people had too much sex for her being so sheltered and him running a busy ranch. It bordered on boring.

Not enough drama imo.

I’m ho€ for pregnancy & breeding, but DAMN. Deacon takes it up the notch, never read so many repetitive lines of pregnant/pregnancy and if she’s pregnant or might be pregnant. LIKE WE GET IT. NO NEED TO SAY MORE, DADDY.

Not quite five because I didn’t like how experienced he was, it took away from some of what they did and made it just a little less special. However, I do loooooove that once he saw her, he knew she was it for him and never looked at anyone else again after that.

I really enjoyed Deacon! It was well written, paced well, and had lots of drama. I do not think it is for everyone. There is a huge power imbalance between the hero and the heroine, which can be a little off-putting. It's quite BDSM heavy, but I don't mind reading something like that once in a while. The smexy times were hot for sure. I've enjoyed the whole series so far and am looking forward to the next one!

I had really high hopes for this book just because of the tidbits we got of Deacon in the previous two. And honestly I’m just disappointed. It almost feels rushed and I had a hard time connecting with the main characters. I was more interested in her stepbrother Bittern than anyone else.

I didn't enjoy it, although I thought I would. I could never get behind the hero. I didn't find his POV attractive or appealing. Some things he said made me eye-roll instead of sigh. The hero also falls immediately in love with the heroine and while I would have usually ate up the hero buying things for the heroine, without ever saying anything to her, I just felt like he loved her for her physical appearance.

I guess one personal reason is that I prefer cruel, diabolical villains over paternalistic brawny, salt of the earth dudes, which is why I don't read too many MC or western romances, perhaps. Although I loved the first novel of The Sovereign Mountain...

I also found the daddy kink not exactly how I like it. That was a real interesting choice to have the heroine's daddy issues resolved through an older man, the hero, who was often compared to her dad in physical resemblance and bearing in terms of the tattoos and the energy they exude, except that the dad is mean. Unfortunately, I felt unmoved by pivotal moments in the novel such as when the father smashes her bug collection (we knew this was coming) or when we get the reveal of the father harbouring feelings for the heroine.

Freya was doing her best. As a heroine, she was really selling shy Appalachian heroine but the father and the hero characters didn't bounce off her well.

This is one of the best dark cowboy romances you’ll sink your teeth into. What’s the song “save a horse…” yeah you catch what I’m saying. This is the first book I’ve read by the author, and you can bet I’ll be circling back to the first two books and going forward.

Freya’s life wasn’t easy growing up with her stepfather after her mother left. Deacon has his own traumas that he endured. Once Deacan sees Freya he is obsessed and will stop at nothing to have her. Freya is drawn to Deacan but has some reluctance as she wants to break her family’s tribulations.

Once they are trapped together during a rainstorm, walls come down. Their chemistry is indisputable and the steam.. off the freaking charts! So much even I was blushing!

The author effortlessly kept me riveting with this story. The suspense and drama that played out kept me engaged and on edge. And the way she delivered the spice… wickedly hot! I’ll say this is one guilty pleasure you won’t want to miss!

Deacon by Raya Morris Edwards
4/5⭐
4/5🌶️

This was my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it! The two main characters, Deacon and Freya, both have tough childhoods that shape who they are. Deacon is familiar with violence, while Freya lives in fear under her stepfather and stepbrother. Despite their different personalities, their chemistry sizzles right from the start!

Freya is such a sweet and innocent young girl who has gone through a lot of emotional abuse. Her stepfather moves them to Deacon's town after buying land there. Deacon has his own tragic past, but he’s determined to fight for what he wants. When he first sees Freya working in a café, he becomes instantly captivated by her and can’t help but stalk her a bit—he truly believes she’s the one for him.

At first, Freya is understandably wary of him because he reminds her of her stepfather. However, as she gets to know him better, she realizes they’re actually very different. Deacon is gentle and protective of her, willing to do anything to keep her safe. It’s heartwarming to see Freya slowly open up to him and find comfort in his presence. I loved the moment she decides to embrace her desires and trust him to be her dominant partner. He always prioritizes her well-being, which is so sweet!

The chemistry between the characters is off the charts! There’s plenty of spice in this book that will definitely have you blushing. Though I haven’t read the earlier books in the series, it was fun to see the previous characters popping up when Deacon needed help. If you're in the mood for a dark cowboy romance with a morally gray hero and lots of spice, you don't want to miss this one.

All Roads Lead to Sovereign Mountain

Deacon has quickly become one of my favorites—though Sovereign still holds the top spot for me.
Please note the content warnings, as the story explores sensitive topics.
Freya and Deacon are two people shaped by pain. She’s endured a life of emotional abuse from her stepfather, Aiden, with only her stepbrother Bittern offering her comfort. When Deacon enters her life, she’s drawn to him—but also wary, seeing echoes of Aiden in the intensity he brings. Freya is determined to break her family’s cycle of suffering, unsure if Deacon can be part of that journey.
Deacon’s past is equally harsh. He’s fought hard for everything he has and will do anything to have Freya by his side. His obsession with her knows no limits, and he refuses to let her stepfather destroy what they’re building. As their bond deepens, Freya begins to trust him, embrace her desires, and believe in their future together.
I loved seeing Sovereign, Keira, Westin, and Jack Russell—who I’m dying to learn more about—and I can’t wait for Jensen’s story!

Dark cowboy, age-gap, and he is thoroughly obsessed with his lady...SIGN ME UP!

I love this series so much, because it is about building a woman up. Raya writes such tragic backstories for the main characters. Especially, the female leads.

Freya Hatfield is being raised by her step-dad after her mother leaves when she is young. You get a glimpse of how Freya was treated by her step-father and step-brothers as she is growing up. The Hatfields move for the Appalachian Mountains to Montana. One day, Freya is spotted by our MMC and little does she know that her life is about to change. Deacon will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and for the amount of time he waits, he seems like a patient man. Once our characters lives become intertwined, the spice happens really quickly and there is SO much spice (no complaints here). It is delicious, and had me blushing and giggling.

I love this love story, and how it develops for Freya and Deacon. They learn how to lean on each other during their more vulnerable moments.

I didn't think I'd love anyone more than Sovereign but Deacon really stole that number one spot!

After Freyas mom leaves her with her step father and dies she's left to take care of the house and her step father and stepbrothers, the only things that bring her joy are all her beetles and butterflies she finds and pins in frames. When her family moves and she finds a job at a local cafe, little does Freya know the love of her life will spend months stalking her.

Daddy Deacon lays his eyes on Freya and decides he must have her , after living his life in foster care and being abused by his adoptive father all Deacon wants is a woman to love him, and to make a family of his own. After a storm blows in and he convinces Freya she has to come stay at his home cause there's no way to get her home in the storm, he starts the plan of making Freya fall in love with him.

From chastity belts, to @n@l hooks, suspension and sex in front of mirrors, their dynamic at its core is so beautiful. All Deacon wants is to finally give Freya someone that wants to love and take care of her, and he will do ANYTHING to make sure nothing comes between him and his girl 🖤

Freya Hatfield's tale begins with her stepfather stepping in after her mom hits the road during her early years. As she grows, we catch snippets of her less-than-glamorous treatment by her stepdad and stepbrothers. The Hatfield clan packs up and moves from the Appalachian Mountains to the wide-open spaces of Montana, where Freya catches Deacon's eye.

Deacon's past is a rollercoaster of battles; he's clawed his way to where he is and won't let anything—or anyone—keep Freya away. His obsession is like a dog with a bone, determined to keep her safe from her stepfather's meddling in their romance. As their connection blooms, Freya starts to trust Deacon, recognize her own yearnings, and dream up a shared future.

This whole saga is a delightful tangle of lovable characters popping out of nowhere to lend a hand to each other!

Things to know

age gap (40M/22F). stalking, discussions of childhood neglect and emotional abuse, heavy use of kink, instances of dubcon (mainly regarding stalking and pregnancy), Violence and weapon use, consensual sex without birth control. Pregnancy and childbirth related content, abusive home environment. Emotional and physical incest (not between blood relatives) is implied, pregnancy that results from an abusive relationship between non-blood relatives in a character’s past, Chasity belt, anal hooks, suspension, use of mirrors

So this series y’all…. Is so dang spicy. I need to do the percentage of spice for this book because lord have mercy on us all. It’s hot.

Deacon and Freya had sparks flying.

Let’s start with Deacon. Literal stalker. He sees Freya from afar and right then and there. Yep. That’s the one. I’m taking her home with me.

He concocts this elaborate plan to get to meet her after watching her work and go to church like a voyeur. The plan included tracking devices, puppy ploys, storms and fallen trees. But it’s fine because he gets the girl.

Freya… sweet sweet Freya. Comes from a very abusive upbringing. Verbally and emotionally abused. She lives with her stepfather and stepbrothers. They have newly moved to this town and she has no idea what she is in for.

Forbidden, drama, found family, bdsm, daddy kïnk, age gap (22-40), boy obsessed, he falls first. Magic.

Freya recently moved with his step-father and step sibling, she's stuck living in her secluded life by the man in her family seeing no way out of this toxic cycle. Deacon takes one fleeting look at her and soon become obsessed with her.

//
She lit a fire in me. My heart was nothing but an empty hearth, and no matter how hard I struck the tinder and fanned the flames, it was always so cold until I laid eyes on her.
My family, right here in my arms.

my babies 🥹💖💖💖

I did not expect this to be so cute and I loved every single part of it, yes it was dark, both bc the heavy topics and the character's behaviours but OMG at the same time Deacon was the greenest flag ever 😩😩 he stalked her for months, basically kidnapped her not one but two times and gifted her a dog but at the same time he put a hit on her "ex-bf" and beat her step-dad to an inch of his life (hehe) for smashing her bugs collection.

My girl Freya went trough a lot, her mother abandoned her when she was little and she grew up abused verbally (thank god not more) by the man on her family, she developed coping mechanisms to escape this reality and make everything slight more tolerable unable to escape. When she first met with Deacon she was scared of him being yet another man in her life to abuse her like her step-father, but this cannot be more different from the reality.

Deacon was patient with her, to not scare her off and most importantly he gave her the safe space to be able to get out of her toxic way of think and act and finally discover herself 🥹💖
His love and care for her was so transparent from the very beginning.

Thank you to Raya Morris Edwards & The Author Agency for trusting me with this ARC.

This book sucked me in relatively early and made me stay up way too late reading it. The writing was very poetic and I found the characters really relatable. Bittern stole the show for me though I loved Deacon's foul mouth and Freya's little quirks as well.

Favorite Quotes (subject to change in final copy):

"The world has made it clear that sex will change me, but men, they reincarnate themselves before the bed is cold. Sin doesn't stick to them, somehow."

"Alone is my favorite place. Quiet is my favorite sound."

"There's nothing poetic about loneliness. It just fucking hurts."

"That doesn't go away. I can give her safety for the rest of her life, but she'll still always cringe inside every time she messes up, expecting to be abused."

Im so fucking easy, give me a hot man that works with horses and is instantly obsessed with the FMC and I’m sold.

I felt so bad for Freya. Life gave her the worst cards without a single reason. And Deacon too, the start of his life was rough and not what any child should live like.

“Yeah, how’s it feel to be a little bitch?”

Deacon was unintentionally funny. That man said “no tracker on her phone cause it’s invasive…but I’m going to clone it so I can see her texts and stuff :)”
When the spice hit I was not expecting Freya to be so hot but I was happy. It was also a lot sad to see how words stuck to her and tainted a part of life that’s not only natural but healthy. It was so especial to see her reclaiming that hurtful word with Deacon’s help.
He was rough but caring and sweet. He listened and payed attention to all the things that made Freya happy. He plotted and schemed to get her and worked to keep her.
I need him to go see a doctor about his nose because it probably would be better off having some steel in it…

"Why put flowers in my hair?" she whispers.
"Because I'm about to give you the most disrespectful fucking you've ever had, and I want you to feel beautiful for it,"

Freya was too nice for her own good sometimes. She was naive and scared, wanting to break the cycle but not knowing how. The moment she met Deacon she saw a new path, but fear still held her back. The BDSM dynamic helper not only him, but also Freya, giving her the opportunity to let control and fear go and lay her trust on Deacon’s feet. I liked how open and willing she was once she trusted, and that trust was strong. She believed in Deacon and his feelings for her wholeheartedly.

“I always feel loved now. That has changed me, fundamentally rewiring my brain, healing my heart.”

It annoyed me a little how naive and ignorant Freya was in terms of “leaving” her stepfather and what he was plotting for her and the land. She kept comparing Deacon to her stepfather and while they appeared similar it was unfair once she got to know Deacon.

"Mind if I borrow that pussy for a minute?" he says, kissing up my neck.
"It's all yours, daddy,"

Around the 64% mark it’s when it felt a little slow. Like the pace was dragging and the same loop of things kept happening with minimal changes. I wanted to shake Freya so she would stop being scared because as much as I understood her train of thoughts, it was frustrating. But then it picked up again and they connected deeper and opened up to each other.

The solution for the easement came to me at like 79% because I’m a genius (jk I was ruminating about the little tidbits of info we got from the beginning and boom idea) And then turns out I was wrong. (You can laugh at my delusional detective skills)

And after meeting Sovereign and Westin I’m DEFINITELY going back to read about them.

Thank you to The author agency and Raya for the e-arc!!

I really wanted to like this. I was so excited for this book ever since I signed up for the ARC last year! Seeing the artwork had me hyped, and the tropes were right up my alley. But this book? Yeah… this was not it.

First off, the pacing was atrocious. Everything is told rather than shown, and nothing pulls me out of a story faster than an author listing events like a grocery receipt. I did this, then I did that, and after that, I did this and that… Like, just shoot me in the head and put me out of my misery. The sentence structure didn’t help either—short, choppy sentences that made the reading experience feel like nails on a chalkboard. I tried to push through, but the repetition made it unbearable. Every sentence was basically said twice in different ways.

But honestly, my biggest issue? This book felt predatory—and not in a Haunting Adeline or Lights Out way, where you can’t help but like the stalker. No, this gave off straight-up pedophilic vibes. Yes, she’s an adult, but she has the mentality of a child and is extremely sheltered. And the MMC being 18 years older? That’s already questionable, but combine that with his behavior, and it’s just ick. (Not that he even acts like he’s 40, because… yeah, no.)

Also, how stupid do you have to be to get into a car with a large strange man? No self-preservation instincts at all?? In a storm, I’d still rather take my chances in the woods than willingly trap myself in a car with a man I don’t know—who just called me sweetheart. Like?? Hello?? Red flags are waving.

And let’s talk about this “strong” FMC… because where? She was as meek as they come. The MMC? Named himself after his first horse. Yes, he willingly changed his name to what his childhood horse was called.

Look, I love dark (and I mean DARK) romance. Give me an unhinged, OTT MMC with stalking and obsession, any day. But this? Not it.

I don’t usually judge people for enjoying books I didn’t like, but if you liked this one? I have questions. This was awful, disgusting, creepy, and all the negative adjectives you can think of. I cannot understand how anyone enjoyed this.

“Maybe that’s selfish, but I want more than just food on my table.”

This sentence hit me harder in this book than any other. Anyone can say they raised their kids bc they put food on the table but actually being there and giving them a healthy, happy environment is something totally different. Deacon and Freya were born into worlds where their home lives were just food on the table and they wanted more.

We finally get to see the mysterious Deacon in this story and all his psychotic glory. This man had no shame in how he was going to get his woman. I loved both Sovereign and Westin but Deacon took the cake with his tendencies. This man stalked her for months before approaching her bc he knew that once he had his plan in place, there was no going back once he had her.

Freya in this book was just trying to survive her household when she meets Deacon. The woman was verbally and emotionally abused her whole like with other her stepbrother, Bittern, having her back. She just wanted to not be afraid anymore and to be able to live her life freely.

Unlike Sovereign and Westin, Deacons antics and his inner monologue cracked me up. This 40 year old man having to give himself a pep talk is everything to go talk to her. He’s been around the block more than once but Freya literally fried his brain. And his explanations on explaining things to her were priceless, especially when this man took her, I was cracking up how nonchalant he was and Freya is freaking out.

My heart broke for all of them but Bittern just stuck with me. He tried his best to protect Freya and he was just numbing his own demons. I also love this intricate web of different characters that just come out of the woodworks to help these men out. Like I want all of them to have a story.

This is book 3 in the Sovereign Mountain Series and my favorite one 🖤🖤 I’m OBSESSED with Deacon!! The mouth on this man 🥵🥵🥵 I will drop to my knees in a heart beat 🧎🏽‍♀️😂

One look is all it took for this man to be obsessed with Freya & the things he does to make her his are TOP TIER! I love me a morally grey character and Deacon delivered! Unapologetic, unhinged & touch her die! HERE FOR IT ALL!! 🖤

Freya living her whole life surrounded by harsh men swore to never fall for a man like them, until Deacon comes to sweep her off her feet! She deserves everything he does for her, she needs all the love, attention and care in the world 😩🫶🏽

So if you want a dark cowboy with lots of smut, DEACON is for you! Enjoy 😉🖤

Daddy Deacon was hottttt 😮‍💨 His mouth and the kink in this book were a great time. I also reeeeally loved his obsession and how thoughtful he was when it came to Freya 🥹 Him buying things for their (one day) home together, picking up things that simply reminded him of her, secretly getting her a dog, having created an attic space that was her own safe space 😭 The care and thoughtfulness was so beautiful.

Freya is a bit of a work in progress 😅 She’s had it rough but she’s so sweet and pure. I loved seeing her feel safe and secure with Deacon, when she’s never been able to feel that way.

Bittern, wow what a character. He was so damn lovely. I was so happy to see him survive this story, go to rehab and get clean / get the medical help he needed, and have his own family in the end 🫶🏻

The story seemed to drag a bit for me near the end but overall, I really enjoyed this one 💕

I really wasn’t prepared for Westin to be dethroned like that but here we are…. (I’m sorry Westin) I think this one also took the cake for the spiciest of the series thus far…..

Deacon- @rayamorrisedwards

Deacon Ryder has always had to fight for what he wants and what he deserves and meeting Freya was no different. Once he sees her for the first time he knows he will stop at nothing to have her. Freya comes from her own fractured family and just needs someone to love her. While Deacon seems too good to be true she can’t deny their attraction and chemistry and starts to wonder what could happen if she let herself fall and be taken care of for once.

THIS BOOK HAD IT ALL. Morally gray- obsessed- st@lker - will do anything for her- MMC. 🐝DSM. Schmink. All of the spicy microtropes you could ask for. The way that Deacon Ryder puts his mind to something and follows through??? I love him. These two had the best chemistry and connection. I loved seeing Freya finally allow someone to care for her IN THE WAY SHE NEEDED TO BE CARED FOR!!!! And the way Deacon tried to hold back some of his crazy until she was all the way invested??? I. LOVE. HIM.

Deacon Ryder I found your theme song-
To quote Queen Ariana “I see it. I like it. I want it. I got it.”

Thank you so much to Raya + @theauthor.agency 🖤

Freya grew up around hard men, her step dad and step brothers are the type of men she knows to avoid. Freya wants to more for her life than what her family has known. After her family moving from Kentucky to Montana, she is in the same situation in a new place. Deacon has taken an interest in Freya and is planning to make her his, but Freya has sworn off men like him. The pull between them is too much to ignore.

I could it get enough of this book. I adored the writing style, it defends pulled you in and transported you to Sovereign Mountain (I place I’ll always want to go back to 😂). Deacon Ryder 🫠 definitely the sweetest bad*ss stalker MMC. The spice was fire, the chemistry between these too was so strong. The relationship between Freya and Deacon was everything I love in a dark romance. Deacon is the protective and possessive MMC that will stop at no lengths to keep her. Their story is an emotional one with but MCs having traumatic pasts, but to see them get their HEA was everything.
