This did SUCH a strong job of what it set out to do, and especially for a debut novel!
The premise is that a segment of the population has "time travel" genes, with individuals attending a special school that trains them how to handle this ability. The junior year of high school features a time travel test--an independent assignment in the past. Charlotte ("Charlie") will sail on the Titanic, with instructions to rescue a priceless book that historically ends up at the bottom of the Atlantic.

I liked that the time travel serves the story but doesn't require much technical explanation or additional sci-fi trimmings, so the story can zero right in on the adventure — and more importantly, the ethical quandary... Charlie is told not to interfere with major historical events, but experiencing them in real time challenges her feelings about what is the right thing to do. It's quite a gripping YA-style read and I would definitely read more by this author.

Content note: Mild swearing and high-school hormones

I would recommend this book so much. It read so much better than other Titanic stories I've taken an adventure on. I saw this book on my Facebook timeline since before it released. Their is a bit of a twist in the beginning but the story still aligns with most of the facts. The history, the best friend lovers, and that this is such a clean story too. Their is nothing graphic about it that my teenager would enjoy it. Yes, I would recommend teens reading this. The only hard about the story towards the end is when the main character goes silent after a traumatic experience. This book gives you a whole different light of Titanic that I hadn't seen in other books. Going back in time with the two main characters definitely gives you a new experience. If you haven't picked it up, I recommend doing so. I plan to buy a Paperback version of it to keep and reread over and over and over.

This was a very creative story with an intriguing premise! Overall, the MFC, Charlie, was a headstrong, smart character who was determined to do the right thing even when she was set up to fail.

This was my first time travel book (if you don't count doctor who), so i was very interested to see where this would take me. It kinda reminded me of Kingdom Hearts, where Sora was inserted and interacted with the main characters of different movies. Charlie was able to talk to Captain Smith and Thomas Ansdews and was besties with Molly Brown. It felt... a little cheesy, to be candid. A lot of the characters gave off a very "look at me" vibe, and I wasn't a big fan.

And then there was Quinn. I was originally under the impression that she'd go back and time and fall in love with somebody from that time period. I was disappointed it was Quinn because he annoyed me and didn't really seem to have much chemistry with her. Their romance felt out of place, especially while they were on the Titanic.

First and foremost, I thought the time travel elements of the book were weak with glaring flaws. It seemed to be used as a backdrop for the romance aspect and therefore, no deep thought was given to such a convoluted idea. As someone who enjoys the plot line of books, this was a hard issue for me to get over.

Overall, this book was a young adult romance - emphasis on YA. Which helped me determine that YA romance is definitely not my cup of tea. The writing was fine, had some good sparks here and there but nothing amazing. The characters were kind of cute but mostly cheesy and annoying which I believe is due to the high school romance not an author flaw. I did think the description of the Titanic and the historically accurate elements and characters was done beautifully!

I got sucked in and was halfway through before I realized it! Charlie is a delight - I loved her internal dialogue as modern girl dropped into an era of proper speaking and constrictive clothing. I also loved the fact that even though the ability to time travel was just a fact of life for Charlie, she still struggled with the right way to use it - does she follow the written rules and just hope for the best or does she take action and try to stop a disaster?
I highly recommend this book - the story, characters, and world building made for an easy and enjoyable read. If you like watching a semi-introvert step out of her shell, following a budding romance, or tagging along on an adventure, then you should enjoy The Titanic Test!

Ann K. Simpson's The Titanic Test: A Love Story is an extraordinary novel that offers a fresh take on a historical event explored by many authors before. The story centres on seventeen-year-old Charlie, who, like her parents, can time travel. The Academy she attends encourages this ability and is preparing to send her back in time for her Junior Year Test. But there's one catch: wherever she goes, Charlie must not interfere with the events of history. With the help of Quinn, a senior at the Academy and Charlie's childhood friend, she must navigate the past while adhering to the strict rules of her teachers.

When Charlie is assigned to travel to the Titanic to recover a valuable book of poetry, she resolves to remain detached and stay in her cabin unless she’s on the search for the book. However, as she bonds with people from different social classes and learns their personal stories, Charlie soon realises she cannot stand by and watch. She becomes determined to do everything she can to prevent the Titanic from sinking and save those she has come to care about.

The Titanic Test: a Love Story is a gripping read which I finished in one weekend because I simply couldn’t put it down. The blend of history and time travel is beautifully executed, and it is clear that the author invested significant time researching the Titanic. The vivid depictions of the ship’s décor, food, and fashion made the story come alive. Additionally, the novel highlights the rigid class distinctions and societal expectations of the time.

The bond between Charlie and Quinn, both modern protagonists aware of the Titanic’s fate, creates an exciting tension as they attempt to alter history despite the rules against it. They are both extremely likeable characters, and I’m hoping that the author has a sequel planned that will take them to another time and place. This was truly a wonderful read.

I would like to preface this review by stating that I have an inexplicable fascination with all things Titanic. That has likely cushioned this review a great deal.

I thought this was a clever story. Was it a little unhinged that a time travel high school would send a student back to a sinking ship for a test? Yes. However, my younger self would have absolutely been obsessed with this book and so I enjoyed the ride.

I appreciated the real people who made an appearance like Molly Brown and Thomas Andrews.

An interesting premise and well written, I enjoyed this book and will look out for more from this author.

I would’ve rated it higher except:

The romance wasn’t very fleshed out - even though the characters had history it felt like instalove which isn’t my favourite.

Also I found the story too idealistic and I didn’t feel the conclusion was realistic.

I mean I knew how the story of the Titanic was going to end but I still read it kicking and screaming. I’m not marking this as having spoilers because it’s 2024 and if you don’t know what happened to the Titanic I can’t help you.

But also the love story was adorable and I had a grand old time.

In a world that exalts free will, Charlie Landers feels anything but free. Born into a family of time travelers, her path feels predetermined—every moment shaped by the doctrine of mastering time. Yet, Charlie longs for simplicity, a chance to live in the present, unburdened by the shadows of the past or the uncertainties of the future. Her Junior Year Test, however, forces her into action. This high-stakes mission demands she travel back to April 15, 1912, and rescue an invaluable book from the doomed RMS Titanic. As the icy waters close in and her own purpose comes into focus, Charlie faces a profound question: is her mission to save history, or to rewrite her own destiny?

The Titanic Test: A Love Story, by Ann K. Simpson, is a compact yet deeply resonant novel, rich with themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Within its pages, fictional characters intertwine with echoes of real lives, reminding us of those who once walked this earth. Simpson skillfully bridges two timelines—the familiarity of modern-day high school and the haunting reality of the early 20th century—as we accompany Charlie and her companion Quinn into history. The result is a story that challenges readers to reflect on what history can teach us, but also on what we must unlearn in our present lives.

Charlie Landers, the novel’s protagonist, is relatable and well-drawn. She embodies the frustrations and dreams of a teenager trying to balance extraordinary responsibility with a yearning for normalcy. Neither an overachiever nor an outsider, she feels like someone we know. This sense of familiarity makes her journey all the more compelling. Her companion Quinn, evolving from friend to love interest, is equally well-developed. Their dynamic—grounded, understated, and genuine—adds richness to the narrative without overwhelming the plot. The romance enhances, rather than distracts from, the story’s emotional core, and their fleeting moments together carry a quiet poignancy that resonates.

Simpson’s attention to historical detail elevates the novel. From the language and mannerisms of the early 20th century to the precise unfolding of events aboard the RMS Titanic, her commitment to accuracy is commendable. Readers will appreciate the way historical events—especially the tragedy of April 14-15, 1912—are treated with respect. The "one pebble" theory woven throughout the narrative reinforces the novel’s central tension: the weight of small decisions and their rippling consequences. This blend of action, introspection, and historical immersion keeps the pacing tight and the pages turning. Simpson reminds us that the Titanic was more than an engineering marvel; it was a vessel of dreams, carrying thousands of souls whose stories were abruptly silenced. Through Charlie and Quinn, readers are given a chance to reconnect with those lives—to feel their hope, despair, and humanity in ways that transcend time. Simpson’s storytelling captures the fragility of life, yet it also celebrates the enduring power of human connection.

This novel is more than historical fiction; it is a reflection on destiny, choice, and the lessons we inherit from the past. The seamless narrative, well-rounded characters, and meticulous respect for history combine to make The Titanic Test unforgettable. For history enthusiasts and lovers of immersive storytelling, this book is a treasure—a beautifully crafted tale that bridges time, offering fresh perspective and emotional depth in equal measure. Simpson delivers a story that lingers, reminding us of both life’s fragility and the enduring threads that connect us all.

Okay, this one gave me mixed feelings that I shall try to explain…

The things I liked?

I must be a friends-to-lovers fan, because I really liked the romance and thought it was sweet. I’m not sure I would change anything of that part of the story. The background information about them scattered throughout was impeccable and the scenes leading up to the time travel were so good.

I also liked the fact that we got to see passengers from all three classes and that there were repercussions in the end for sneaking into first class.

Also, I really, Really liked the roommate character. She was well-written and very realistic. Just everything about her was *chef’s kiss*.

The things that I was like: Why? Why was this necessary?

I could totally pick out scenes from the movie “Titanic”. Maggie Brown getting a lead character to a first class dinner? Check. A woman suicidal and trying to jump off the back of the ship but someone stops her and then she and her rescuer almost get into trouble because they aren’t in the same class? Check. Leads ending up in the cargo hold? Check. Leads running around the ship to avoid getting caught? Check. MFL getting forced into lifeboat without MML and her jumping back onto the Titanic? Check. Leads saving someone/people from first class? Check. Leads getting into the Atlantic as the ship sinks? Check.

Now, if this was intentional on the author’s part and the book is supposed to be more of an ode to the movie (which is entirely possible, seeing as the MFL watches the movie multiple times before going back in time) and should be viewed like a fanfic of it, I suppose it’s alright and she did it well. However, that was not the expectation I had going into this book. I am pretty sad/disappointed that the majority of the story felt very unoriginal and more like a PG version of the movie with time travel added so the leads don’t die. So, for me at least, I felt like I had to deduct two stars for unoriginality.

Overall, it seems well-written, but I found that I didn’t like specific things that, if taken out, the story would be fine.

I can’t exactly say the writing style was bad, but there were things that made me uncomfortable. Multiple times the author mentions the female body in a way that is like, “okay, fine, but what woman mentions her boobs almost every day? This seems like it could be written by a guy.” Like, I know that her point was probably that women’s bodies shouldn’t be taboo, but when I read these instances, I felt like it was objectifying the MFL. For one moment, I had to think of her as body parts and not a human being…and then that moment happened again…and again. I wonder if these moments were used to be more “Women’s Rights! Femininity!” but I felt this was done well with the friends the MFL makes and the conversations they have that all that objectifying wasn’t needed.

There were other things within the book that made me, personally uncomfortable, but I can’t say I want to put in the effort to defend them all. Added all up, I decided to deduct another star for all of them and call the rating good enough.

“I find the Titanic and what happened that night very interesting, so I was up for reading this book. I enjoyed it a lot. The time travelling stuff is cool, and the MC was fun to root for. I don’t know what I’d do – hide in my cabin or try to stop it hitting the iceberg.” Girl, aged 15
“I loved the ‘culture’ on the Titanic. Well, it’s good if you travelled first class! The best character is Quinn. I think there’s a lot of suspense in the story, and the romance – which is not my thing – was okay too. Most YA will enjoy it.” Boy, aged 14

What if time travel was not only possible, but taught in special high schools and regulated? Seventeen year old Charlie just wants to be the best possible surfer and try to ignore her impending junior year test that will send her somewhere back in time to complete a task that is somehow supposed to make her into the girl Mom and Dad, both accomplished time travelers, want her to be.
Then there's Quinn, her year older neighbor, who also attends the academy she goes to. They've known each other since they were toddlers, and she thinks of him as an annoying, buy likable older brother. But how does he see her?
When she learns that her test will send her back to 1912 to be a passenger on the Titanic, tasked with retrieving something of value, she's at first horrified, then determined to hide out in her second class cabin during the time she'll be on the ship. When she boards and discovers her senior class Minder is none other than Quinn, she's angry, thinking he knew ahead of time and that's why he was messing with her emotions in the weeks leading up to the test.
Then things get alternately intriguing and messy. Charlie starts making friends as well as rescuing a young woman who is a third class passenger. Her mission starts going off the rails when she decides she cannot let all these people die when the ship sinks after hitting the iceberg.
I'll let you discover the rest of the story. However the way history, customs, and class rigidity of the time, are woven into the story, along with the question of just how much Charlie, and a reluctant Quinn, CAN change the past, make this an astonishingly fine read. It's a perfect mix of history, romance, and 'what if' as the author brings the fateful voyage and its passengers to life in a most vivid way.

Very amazingly good

I wasn't sure what to expect when I choose to read this book. Being a huge history nerd about the Titanic and having read a lot of books that just don't do it justice. This book is glorious. The author creates a tale that flows with the right amount of perfect detail adding little snippets that any Titanic lover will enjoy.

The level of romance is perfect and not sappy or over powering. Something do so write is the EDD and flow of language taking the time to create dialog that would belong in the 1912 and not being lazy like many and just writing it with modern attitude.

And finally the fact that the author did not wash over the tragedy and how it would effect some one intimately. Portraying PTSD within a tragedy like this and not making it out as a woo is me situation but giving it light and complexity and depth and understanding.

Can't recommend this book enough.

I wasn't expecting to like, let alone love, this book! The beginning was a bit slow and not at all intriguing, but I pushed through. I adored Charlie and her personality. She is so strong and has a sense of what's right and wrong. She brought up the moral question of time travel. Would we do everything we could to save lives, even if it meant altering time? She not only went against the rules but also weighed the cost of changing things and her conscience. I love her for it and admire her for it. Quinn is a great character, and I love how he helped Charlie. However, Charlie deserves all the spotlight. Yes, she couldn't have done what she did without his help, but she had to fight him to help. I love the change she underwent over the course of the book. She grew beautifully. Love the ending and the way this book was written! I can't wait to see what else this author will come up with.

Well-written, fast paced, and traumatic as we meet the doomed passengers of the Titanic. I found one spelling error (Forrest instead of Forest on page 185) and "f'ing" should be written as "effing" on page 277, but otherwise well-edited.

Time travel has a basic conundrum--how does a time traveler not change history to such an extent that it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things? And yet, in the face of the deaths of so many innocent people, how can one not want to do something to save their lives? That is the question Charlie faces as this high school junior is sent back to rescue a valuable artifact.

I really enjoyed reading this, but it was unbelievable that any school would send high schools students back in time without close adult supervision to ensure that they didn't create a drastic change in history.

I read this book in one weekend, almost all in one day. The author does a great job of weaving historical facts we know about the titanic throughout the story of two modern-day teenagers sent back in time. I’m usually skeptical about reading books that involve high school aged protagonists, but this one was different; no cliche high school drama or anything of the like. The story will keep you hooked and turning page after page, reading through the thrill of the characters’ time and experience on the ship. I have always been intrigued by the Titanic and this book continued to pique my interest.

As many others, the Titanic has always had a chokehold on me. As does time travel. This YA novel has both, so it was basically made for me. I loved this debut novel and following Charlie's quest, her drive to change history, and the interwoven romantic subplot. Just like the iconic movie Titanic, The Titanic Test drops you in to experience the Titanic and see what it would be like to be on that fated journey. Because the main character understands the destiny the passengers face makes the stakes even higher. Absolutely loved it, would highly recommend.

This scratched my Titanic and time-traveling itches

I lost both sleep and productivity reading this compelling novel. Thanks to the Kindel app on my phone I was even reading it while brushing my teeth. I’ve been interested in the Titanic tragedy ever since reading my grandparent’s old book about it back in the 1950s. The concept of a time-traveling school analogous to today’s STEM academies was something I hadn’t seen before—what a clever way to get the high school-age main characters on the Titanic. I highly recommend this book.

I won this book from one of the giveaways. It is a YA book and I am not a YA but thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed! Absolutely loved this book. I have been interested in the Titanic since I was a child, which sparked my interest in this book. The main characters were truly likeable. Not all female main characters are 🙄 haha I loved that the book did stick to some of the actual history and people on the titanic. I shed a few tears during some of the more emotional moments. Couldn't put this one down. Great read and highly recommend. 👍🏽

Thought this book really delivered - and the scenes on the Titanic were like stepping into history with how well the details of the ship were described. Gave it to my girlfriend after I read it, and she loved it. She was a huge fan of the romance between Charlie and Quinn, and couldn't stop talking about the ending. We both thought it was cool to imagine modern people time traveling to the Titanic. Highly recommend this one for everyone.

An engaging and entertaining combination of time travel and history brings the final days of the Titanic to life while contrasting Edwardian and contemporary culture. I loved how time travel and its implications were handled.
