This book had me all in my feelings! I almost stopped reading it, but it’s been a priority of mine to learn my history; the history of the beautiful island where my parents were born and raised, where I was born. The author does a great job getting the reader to travel from early history to current and explains the politics related to PR in plain, easy to understand English. I also learned a new word, “diaspora” and I fit the definition! I go back to PR often. Now more than ever, I am looking forward to my trip in just a couple of weeks, as I’ll be there with my even more heightened Puerto Rican pride (if that’s even possible)! I’ll be starting Book 2 soon!
This book takes you on a journey through Puerto Rico’s history. Starting with the Indigenous people through three different European colonizers and the US rule is fascinating and something I knew little about. This book is an easy to read but detailed history of Puerto Rico only known to some as a popular stop on a Caribbean cruise out of Florida. It is fascinating to learn the history is this very unique place. Citations would have been nice so those interested could dig a little deeper into some of the topics. Otherwise, excellent.
I loved this book. The author tackles each era of Puerto Rico’s history with precision and great detail. I’ve been to Puerto Rico twice and lived in a neighboring island but was shocked about how much of the islands history I was unaware of. If you’re a history buff or just want to learn more about Puerto Rico’s rich history, this is the book for you.
I’ve always been fascinated by the histories of specific locations. If you’ve ever wondered about Puerto Rico, this is an excellent source of an interesting history. From the native Taino and Columbus’ arrival, all the way up to hurricane Maria’s Devi station only a few years ago. This book will lead you through the past and even predictions for the future of Puerto Rico.
It’s a good general summary but needs an editor. Most statements are too general “x transformed Puerto Rico culture” but then no examples. It also repeats information to the extent where you think you’ve already read this section and lost your place in the book, but no they are just repeating information.
