V.B. Lacey is an office manager by day and an avid reader-turned-writer by night. She grew up on stories of magic, love, and sarcasm, and equips her writing with all three. She lives in Texas with her supportive husband and two rambunctious dogs. When she’s not writing about morally grey characters and far-off kingdoms, you can find her reading (mostly fantasy and contemporary romance), playing board games, or spending time with friends.

✨ This prequel is best read after reading the first book in this duology Long Live, because Long Live showed the aftermath of a Kai and Aiden’s marriage, but also hinted at Kai and Aidan’s past, and what they were like. Technically, you can read this whenever, but my personal opinion is that it’s more enjoyable after reading book 1 :) ✨
Wildfire tells the beautiful love story of two elementals: Aidan, the fire elemental, and Kai, the water elemental.
The two couldn’t be any different power-wise. Aidan is fiery and temperamental, powerful and dominant. Kai is a free spirit, wild and longing for a human life, lonely yet finding happiness in her element. And yet they’re star-crossed lovers, destined for each other.
This novella was so beautiful. Heart wrenching, tragic, sentimental, left me almost sobbing and smiling. Lacey has a wonderful way with words, and her ability to craft true vulnerability into her writing is such an amazing thing. Her characters are so deep, their feelings so raw and valid. She explores humanity at its core.
I love Aidan and Kai. They are undeniably each others’ storm and yet both each others’ solace. They cherish each other deeply, loving with such a beautiful humanly love, despite being immortal elementals. Even after their marriage, their love was still palpable and as true as ever.
But over time, conflicts, pride and anger for in the way, and marred their seemingly happily ever after. Wildfire shows what it’s like to trust after heartbreak, and learning to love even when it hurts. It shows the true love a man has toward his wife, choosing selflessness and sacrifice above all else to ensure her own happiness.
Seeing their romance develop was so adorable. The hearts melting, the banter, the fond memories and funny moments… it was love at first sight 🥹🥹
This book packed a punch, guys. It was short but so deep and elicited so many reactions and thoughts from me. It raised the question, what does it take to love? and who are we willing to chase into the slave beyond, to the edge of forever?
Fire and Water, dancing together dangerously. A couple getting burned in the heat of the battle, Yet willing to risk it all for their undeniable love.
Wildfire was amazing!

⇒ 𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 🗣️ 💭 💦 More than anything, Kai desired fulfillment. Happiness. To no longer be rocked about like a vessel on the waves. That was what she deserved, wasn't it? After all she had done? She watched the humans find their joy time and time again, always wondering when it would be her. When her bright smiles and enchanting laughter would one day be true.
Then, there was Aidan. Searing, fervent, protective Aidan. A man who rose to the challenge of his people time and time again, keeping them safe at all cost.
And from the very beginning, since he took his first breath, he had only ever longed for one thing.
𝘏𝘦𝘳.
Fire and water. Coal and ice. Two elements who could never survive alongside one another, who were equal in their ferocity and magnificence, who, when thrust together, would drown the world in its flames.
Their love was a tale for the ages. A myth among gods.
💦 He loved watching her like this. One could practically 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 her pull to her element, with the rhythmic dance of waves crashing against the riverbank, her long hair twirling around her neck and shoulders in the wind. It was as if a sense of peace washed over her.
Something pricked his chest. 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 was never a word he would use to describe his fire. Invigorating, forceful, overpowering. It was a piece of himself he couldn't live without. But he didn't seek it the way Kai yearned for her water, or how Jade found comfort in the earth around her.
When he thought of peace, he thought of turquoise eyes and a bright smile. The scent of salt and citrus and rolling tides. He could be himself around her, without fear of being 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩, without having to rein his true nature in. That was the kind of peace he wanted. The kind that put his entire mind, body, and soul at ease.
💦 Aidan represented 𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺. An eternity of flirtatious smiles and absent touches. An eternity of love and devotion, passion and heat and life. Or an eternity of misery and heartbreak, a failed attempt at happiness that would lead to a neverending reminder of what she lost.
💦 "I'm sorry," she whispered back. "I'm sorry it took me so long to see you."
“You have nothing to be sorry for." He kissed her cheek, his lips lingering on a fading tear. "I think I've loved you enough for the both of us."
She leaned into him. "Now I have an eternity to catch up, I sup-pose."
“Is that a promise?”
Inching up on her toes, her lips brushing against his, she mur-mured, "That's a promise."
💦 He loved her so absolutely, so unconditionally. And he’d known her their entire existence—there was nothing to hide, no flaws he didn’t cherish, no dark thoughts he hadn’t already had himself at one point or another. He was an infinite reminder that she would always be loved. An endless potential of days filled with laughter and nights spent in warmth. A promise of forever that she’d never had before.
💦 “You don’t have to bother with that," she said, nodding pointedly at the oars and flicking her wrist. The water churned beneath the canoe and they picked up speed.
"I know, but I want to. I like to know I can still do things for you. That I can take care of you." His lips quirked upward. "Do you know how intimidating it is being with the great and mighty sea goddess?"
💦 "Marry me," he whispered beneath the shell of her ear.
She choked on an inhale. Hands on his chest, she pushed away and steadied herself. "What did you say?"
His eyes were clear and resolved, not clouded with desire or hazi-ness. "Marry me, Kai. I know it's a human tradition, but that doesn't make it mean any less. They bind their lives to one another.
They promise to love until their dying breaths." He traced his thumb over her parted lips. "I want that with you. To love you until the edge of the world."
It was a human tradition. One that ended when they no longer lived. But it was a beautiful one. It came from their passion and devotion, from the desire to solidify their love and bear each other's burdens and share in the joys and sorrows of life.
Maybe it was ridiculous, to think that two immortals could promise such a thing when forever stretched before them. But if she had learned anything from Aidan, it was to never underestimate how fiercely they could burn.
💦 Aidan showed her every day how much he loved her. Words would never do justice to the way she'd brought him such peace, and so as he slipped the ring on her finger, he kissed her fingertips and whispered a simple, "To the edge of the world."
She took his left hand and slid his ring on, folding her fingers between his and squeezing. "To the edge of the world," she repeated.
Without warning, vines sprung from their clasped hands, twisting and twining around their arms. White flowers grew and blossomed in the blink of an eye. A sweet floral scent filled the air, and Kai looked back at Jade with a wide smile. The earth elemental winked.
The priest announced them husband and wife. Before the words left his mouth, Aidan put a hand to Kai's back and dipped her low, his lips covering hers.
𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘦.
But she was so much more than that. She was ingrained on his very soul. He couldn't get rid of her even if he tried.
"I love you so much," she whispered just for him, as Rynn and Jade clapped and cheered beside them.
"I love you, sweetheart," he said, kissing her again. Everywhere their bodies touched was fused together, the winding vines around their arms a fitting symbol of the way she was forever wrapped around his heart.
He dared the world to try and take her from him. To take 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴. As sure as the sea and the fire blazing in his spirit, not even the gods could tear them apart.
This novella was so good!!! I loved getting a glimpse into Kai and Aidan 1,000 years prior to the events of Long Live and Forever Reign! It makes the events of this duology even more meaningful and there were a few fun easter eggs if you’ve already read the duology!
the devotion between aiden and kai is so special. i loved learning more about their story in this novella. we also get more history of the political world which cleared up some of the questions i had while reading book one. this novella was quite short, but packs an emotional punch. i would probably recommend reading this before reading the duology for a more impactful read 🤍
I really enjoyed this book! I love the writing and the characters :D I started reading Long Live, and then I got Wildfire. So I decided to pause reading Long Live and read Wildfire. I don’t regret it!! Now I know the elements' personalities more and the history of the world more, which helps a lot. So my recommendation would be to read this first.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ •no-language🫢 •Level 4~ Steamy Attraction/ Interaction Described attraction and/ or detailed kissing scenes
VB Lacey is quickly becoming a favorite author after reading In the Wake of the Wicked I jumped at the opportunity to read this novella before I dive into Long Live.
The contrast in the timelines was done expertly, tugging at emotions of how things were and how they fell apart. I’m completely captivated by Kai and Aiden, by the way something so intense and beautiful has the potential to build or destroy.
The author has an elegant writing style that mixes beautiful prose with emotive imagery, without drowning readers in details as the story unfolds. This particular story struck a chord as a reminder to allow yourself to live and adventure, not just exist. And that sometimes becoming to enmeshed in a situation no matter your intentions may only hinder your cause, while standing idly by may be more damaging than firmly announcing your beliefs and daring to take a stance.
Overall this is a well crafted novella filled with love and hurt that thoroughly convinced me to read the full series.
It was nice to dive back into this world, even if it’s only a novella prequel! I love the love story that V.B. Lacey wrote out between Kai and Aiden and I ship them so much! That ending though? That hit hard, but overall, the backstory between those two, Jade, and Rynn was worth reading!
This was an amazing introduction to the Elementals of Ilona. There was so much love and tension between Aidan and Kai. I can't wait to find out more about what caused them to push each other away before their great slumber. This may be a novella, but it's packed full of angst, love, tension, war, and major decisions. I cannot wait to read more of the Elementals of Iona in Love Live.
This was a great short novella about the world of the Elementals of Iona. The romance between Aiden and Kai was adorable and super sweet! I haven’t read the other books yet but I’m exited to start!
🌊 The vibes: - prequel novella - dual pov - Elemental Magic - Closed door
🔥 My thoughts: This was a fun addition to read if you loved the Elementals of Iona.
🌊 I read this after I finished the duology and I felt like that was the perfect time to read it. I liked to see moments that were mentioned in the duology. Seeing the elementals again was perfect because I definitely missed the characters after finishing book 2.
🔥 I don’t think this one is necessary, and I almost think it would be confusing if you read it at any other placement than after the duology. But that’s just my own opinion on when it should be read. I enjoyed this little read!
Aiden and Kai 🤍 I missed these characters so much! I’m so happy I saw you can download this free book on the authors website. Such a treat!
1,000 years before the duology begins, we get a glimpse of the Elementals life before the slumber, in this short novella. I would love a book solely on Aiden and Kai’s future 🥹
Travelling back 1,000 years back before the events of Long Live. Here we follow Kai and Aidan's epic story. A story of love, sorrow, and sacrifice in this novella entitled Wildfire.
Wildfire can be read at any point of your choosing in the reading of the Elementals of Iona Duology!
“‘Sweetheart, I would follow you to the edge of the world and beyond, until we are the only two stars in the sky.’”
Wow! I don't know what to say about this novella. I was just so amazed by this novella. This was the first V.B. Lacey book that I have read and I was so impressed and now I can't wait to immerse myself into the Elementals of Iona Duology and get to know the characters better and explore the world.
I learned after reading this novella that I should have read the first book of the duology, Long Live as it follows what happens after Kai and Aiden marry and hint at Kai and Aidan's past and what they were really like. Thankfully, it doesn't matter though and the choice is yours when you read this novella.
I loved Wildfire, it tells this beautifully stunning story of two very different elementals: Aidan who is a fire elemental and he lives up to his element in his personality. And then we have Kai, she is the water elemental and she is as calm as the soft waves on a calm day and yet can be as fierce as a tsunami when it is called for.
Aidan and Kai couldn't be any more different when it comes to their power.
Aidan is so fiery, volatile, and brutal, and he's dominant.
Kai is a free spirit, wild, and all she wants is the normal life everyone else has, she often feels lonely in her life and yet she is finding happiness in her element.
And now, they are star-bound lovers, fated to be together, destined to be the others perfect match.
For a novella, I will say that this is an emotional roller-coaster. It's heartbreaking, tragic, sentimental, and there were times that I was left crying and others where I was left smiling in joy. I will say that Lacey has the perfect way with words and she manages to weave in true vulnerability into this story, and it's such an amazing thing to read.
Each character has such depth to their personality, all their feelings are so raw and you can tell they are all valid. I love the depth each character has and the arcs that each character goes through and the growth and development you see through the novella is so perfect and spot on, I'm just in awe of Lacey's talent.
And the way that Lacey uses her writing, the worlds that she creates, and her characters to explore humanity and the core of humanity is stunning.
Aidan and Kai, I love these two characters so much. You can see that they bring out both the best and the worst of each other. They are the other's storm and yet they have the ability to come together and find solace in each other. I love the way that they cherish and love each other so deeply, loving each other with such a human love that is so beautiful and true, even though you know that they are immortal elementals, you still feel like they are 2 humans who love each other so deeply. And even after they get married, you can still see how there was always a storm brewing between them and yet they love each other ever so deeply.
Sadly, as time passes conflicts, pride, and anger all get in the way and seem to blacken what could have been a happily ever after for them. Wildfire is the perfect is a perfect novella showing what it can be like when you trust after your heart has been shattered, and what it's like when you choose love, even when it hurts the most. We can see the truest love a man has and shows toward his wife, it's what it looks like when you choose selflessness and sacrifice above everything else, ensuring your own happiness.
I loved seeing this romance as it developed, even though there were times when it was so heartbreaking at times. Watching Aiden and Kai's hearts melt, and their banter was so perfect and on par, and the novella is full of so many fond memories and funny moments, you know that in reality Aiden and Kai did fall in love at first sight.
You have to know that this book is going to hit you in all the feels and you are going to go on one heck of a roller-coaster ride. Yes, it is a short novella, but while it is short, it has depth and it has so many emotions, and elicits so many reactions and it really makes you think sometimes.
The biggest question I had from this book was: What does it really take to love and fully love?
I am not entirely clear how VB Lacey just managed to make my heart soar and then tear it apart in 100 pages. This was such a fantastic prequel to the Elementals of Iona series. I intensely enjoyed seeing each of this foursome before the events of Long Live. And seeing Kai and Aiden’s beginnings was everything. The ending though. I am still crying.
Highlights: ✨Prequel Novella ✨Elemental Magic ✨Found Family ✨Betrayal ✨Soo many emotions
Favorite Quote: “I want that with you. To love you until the edge of the world.
Devoured it. Would’ve finished faster but responsibilities got in the way!
The yearning between Kai and Aidan is palpable. And the bond between the Elementals is a sweet, deep one. I can’t wait to read more and for them to come back in the Iona Elementals duology.
Love V. B. Lacey and everything she writes!
🔥 Elemental Gods/Goddesses 🌬️ Star crossed 🌳 Civil war 🌊 Closed door romance but still steamy
This novella was so good and a whirl wind of love and sorrow and magic with Fire and Water.. it will definitely get you hyped up and ready for the book Long Live. You can’t imagine not knowing how these two powerful immortal people become more. I can’t wait to read Long Live!! Wildfire is the perfect name for this novella because whew it’s something else 🔥 ‼️Available Now‼️ Included are: ♥️Epic Love ❤️🔥Fire Magic 🌊Water Magic 💨Fast Paced Spice radar is 🌶️🌶️ Stars radar is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nice prequel, it was a sweet story and provided some more details about the important events from the duology.
It has some nice backstory if you read it before the duology. I think reading it first would've made me more invested in the duology earlier since the multi-POV from the beginning of Long Live was a bit much!
(Download Wildfire on the author's website if you're having trouble finding it, like I did!)
Interesting take on the Elements being magical beings. This was written in 3rd person, dual pov, and goes back and forth between past & present. I really enjoyed Kai and Aidan's story.
Perfect length for a prequel (95 pages long). The ending made me excited to read the next book.
Love V.B. Lacey's storytelling abilities, can't wait to read the rest of this series.
This novella was really fun and I could see myself binging the whole series if my ADHD wasn’t demanding so many different books right now. I do wish one important part of the conflict would’ve been more detailed but other than that, great use of past and present to build the characters and story.
