Forced away from the Outback she both loves and loathes, bush pilot Amelia Fraser has lost everything - except her compassion. Running from tragedy, she finds herself in Settlers Bridge, determined to never let anyone get close to her again ... because accepting love might mean she is ready to replace her memories. And she'll never let that happen.

Widower Heath Brennan has learned to channel his grief into anger and self-recrimination. Haunted by the tragic accident that claimed his wife, he is a recluse, grappling with guilt and a heart full of unresolved anguish. His nineteen-year-old daughter, Charlee, battles her own demons. Once the perfect child, she's now a troubled university student in the clutches of drug addiction. Her rage towards Heath for her mother's death forms an impenetrable barrier between them.

As Amelia and Heath navigate the treacherous waters of grief and guilt, they learn to confront their pasts, their pain ... and consider the possibility of healing. In the midst of brokenness, they might just discover that the act of reaching out could be the key to finding solace and perhaps, a way forward.

Wings Above the Mallee is a poignant tale of loss, love, and the reluctant journey towards redemption, where every character learns that mending a broken heart begins with a single, courageous step.

Though fortunate to grow up in the South Australian country – initially on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula in a tiny town where the school had a total enrolment of only eleven students, and later on a sheep and wheat farm in the Murraylands - in typical teen fashion, Léonie couldn't wait to hit the bright lights of the big city when she graduated.
However, a couple of years working in various government departments, including the State History Trust and the Education Department, saw her longing to make her way back to the country.
Through a circuitous route (isn't that life?) she now finds herself splitting her time between her home and professional counselling practice in the beautiful Adelaide Hills and her childhood farm. She definitely has the best of both worlds!

Amelia Fraser is a bush pilot, she’s spent the last three years constantly on the move, and not staying in one place for long. Amelia does have a soft spot for animals and she rescued and cares for a magpie and a possum. Amelia arrives in Settlers Bridge, she’s going to do some temp work for the council and her friend Dr. Taylor Hartmann has organised a hanger to store her plane.

Heath Brennan is a widower, he bought a farm near Settlers Ridge, and because he wanted to get as far away from his past as he could and be closer to his father Sean. Heath is a recluse and he hates leaving his property, and he’s mourning his wife and the life they had together. Charlee is Heath’s nineteen-year-old daughter and she has turned to drugs to numb the pain of losing her mum and to cope and she’s a mess. Heath can’t believe his once beautiful daughter is a shell of her former self and he doesn’t trust her and they barely speak and when they do Charlee pushes his buttons and Sean steps in as a referee.

I received a copy of Wings Above the Mallee by Léonie Kelsall from Allen & Unwin and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This story grabbed my from the first page, I couldn’t wait get to know the characters and discover how the plot would unfold. A narrative about living in a small Australian country town, where everyone is trying to help and pry or get you to join a committee or group, what a heavy burden loss and grief is, finding forgiveness and recovering, dealing with addiction and giving someone a second chance, overcoming a tragedies and being able to move forward.

I really liked how caring for animals and injured wildlife gave Amelia a purpose and she shared this with Charlee, it provides an outlet for their emotions and they heal both themselves and the animals.

Léonie Kelsall writes novel’s that make you think and about topics which one day will affect us all, or someone we know, and she explores the good things in life and like love, friendship and family, and the difficult situations such as death and grief, in a caring, considerate, insightful and thoughtful way and I highly recommend Wings Above the Mallee and five stars from me.

As Amelia Fraser approached Settlers Bridge from above, her small Jabiru aircraft filled with her few possessions, as well as her rescue animals, she knew she'd only be in Settlers Bridge for a few weeks, then she'd move on. The temp position she'd acquired was enough for now. Landing on the small airstrip on a farm on the outskirts of town, Amelia had no idea that the family who owned the farm would become a pivotal part of her life. Sean was a charming Irish man, whose widower son Heath was a morose, angry and at times downright rude person. While Charlee was a surly, resentful teenager with a drug problem. Swimming in grief, the family were struggling to survive.

When Amelia took on a lamb whose mother had died, then a second one, she added them to her menagerie of Dusty the magpie and Biggles the possum. The animals were her lifeline and helped her focus on something other than her grief. In the meantime, the town and its people surrounded Amelia, so she soon had some people she could call friends. Amelia's compassion, empathy and understanding drew Charlee to her, and in time Heath. In helping to heal these people, could she heal herself? Was it possible to have a happy future and leave the past - but not the memories - behind?

Wings Above the Mallee is another exceptional read by Aussie author Leonie Kelsall which I enjoyed. The small South Australian town of Settlers Bridge, not far from Murray Bridge, has been home to a few of the author's novels - the previous, The Homestead in the Eucalypts - is Taylor's story. Wings Above the Mallee is a story of loss, of heartache and grief, and the steady and sometimes reluctant journey to redemption. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin AU for my ARC to read and review.

This is a moving, emotional, heartfelt and heartwarming story all rolled into one, with another visit to Settlers Bridge, one of my favourite places to be we catch up with friends that we know and we meet bush pilot Amelia Fraser and widower Heath Brennan, two people going through grief and hurt, will they find love and happiness together, can two wounded souls help each other, this is a must read.

When Amelia lost everything she ran or flew off in her small plane with her rescue animals Dusty the magpie, and Biggles the possum because they are easy to talk to, she picks up temporary office work and does her best to not get close to people because losing them hurts too much. She finds herself in the small town of Settlers Bridge will this place change her life?

Heath is haunted by the accident that took his wife’s life he has bought a farm in Settlers Bridge and is a recluse, his father Sean and daughter Charlee are there as well but both have their own demons to cope with Charlee is nineteen now and is nothing like the daughter she used to be, struggling with drugs and university, Heath struggles to find a way to make things change, the blame she holds against her father is huge, will this small town and its residents help bring them back to together?

When Heath and Amelia meet when Amelia hangers her plane on their property there is a connection, a small one but when Amelia jumps in to help rescue a lamb things start to move between them and soon she is looking after two lambs, Charlee likes Amelia and this brings Heath and Amelia closer together but there are a lot of hills to climb before they can find the love and happiness that they both deserve there is a lot of pain and grief to unwrap and open up about first, will they get there? And what about Charlee will she find her way to normal again?

I truly loved this one so much Leonie Kelsall writes from the heart her characters are real, honest and so easy to love and I loved Heath, Amelia, Charlee and Sean, there were tears and smiles from me throughout this story, the rescue animals add so much to the story they are the best, but the love that flows from the pages of this story had me turning the pages, I do highly recommend this one, it really is a must read, thank you MS Kelsall for another keeper.

My thanks to the publisher Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.

There’s just something about Leonie’s writing that is magical, she can take you into rural South Australia and immerse you into the town of Settlers Bridge where you really feel the emotions and grow to love the authentic characters and animals.

Wings Above the Mallee by Leonie Kelsall is a rural romance story featuring a female pilot, intense grief and guilt, dark issues and a wonderful community spirit.

It was interesting to encounter the daily lives of people living in rural Australia and the daily challenges they encounter which are all too true to life in these country small towns.

Amelia Fraser is a bush pilot, she’s suffered a horrific tragedy in her past and she has arrived at Settlers Bridge with Dusty the magpie and Biggles the possum, her rescues that are now her family. Amelia has promised herself never to get close to anyone ever again.

Angry recluse Heath Brennan is a widower and his wife’s death still haunts him, his estranged daughter Charlee aged nineteen is also still battling with grief. Heath is now living in Settlers Bridge on a farm with his father Sean and they meet Amelia, on first impressions Heath seemed to be one of the most infuriating men she has met. Dad Sean is a likeable man and a recovering alcoholic who is trying to give support to his son and granddaughter.

I absolutely loved this story and the difficult emotional aspects, of second chances and being able to move forward with life. And of course I loved the wildlife and farm animals featured throughout. Highly recommend.

An exceptional and unputdownable story of healing and hope.

Big thanks to Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review.
It’s time to return to Settler’s Bridge and a new emotional rural story featuring some new faces and some familiar ones.
A tale of grief, loss, hope, friendship, family, learning to trust again and healing from the past.
Pilot Amelia Fraser is running from her city life and settling into the small town with a determination of never loving again.
Farmer Heath Brennan is a widower and dealing with guilt, as well as coping with his daughter Charlee’s chaotic and dependent lifestyle.
Then they meet……
Will sparks ignite or will love fly away……
A welcoming plot, a camaraderie cast, a close knit country community, a selection of cute furry and feathered friends, bringing the many feels to the pages, all in a delightful reading package.
I particularly like the character Sean and his words of wisdom.
I love when I read an idyllic rustic book by Leonie, we are also getting the darker subjects and social issues woven through, making the narrative more authentic.
One that readers will enjoy.

Wings Above the Mallee is Léonie Kelsall's 7th novel and finds us back in Settlers Bridge, a small town that has entered my heart along with all of its residents. I love the community spirit, the gossip and the matchmaking seniors.

Amelia arrives in Settlers with her rescue pets, dusty the magpie and Biggles the possum. She is running from heartache and won't connect with anyone too deeply as the fear of caring again is too great. She has come to visit good friend Taylor and work a temp job for a few months before moving on again.

Heath is now living in Settlers Bridge with his father Sean who is battling an alcohol addiction. Heath is angry and despondent which is his way of coping with the guilt and grief over the death of his wife.
I loved the relationship between Sean and Heath. Sean kept an eye on Heath and always looked for some brightness in every day and made sure to point this out to Heath. He never gave up on Heath even though he had his own problems.

Wings Above the Mallee is the story of two broken people coming together but fearing that their combined grief may be too much to bear. There is always an underlying message of hope that they could help each other to heal.

You will find lots of heartache in Wings Above the Mallee, which overwhelmed me at times, however the lovely community balanced this out with their matchmaking and fun gossip. Throw in a dose of animal rescue, communities working together and some teenage rage all making Wings Above the Mallee a book not to be missed.

Wings Above the Mallee is an exploration of grief, loss, guilt and addiction and the long process to forgiveness and healing.

**Wings Above the Mallee**
by Leonie Kelsall

In a gripping tale of resilience and emotional upheaval, bush pilot Amelia Fraser is forcibly uprooted from the rugged beauty of the Outback she simultaneously loves and despises. Having recently endured a devastating personal tragedy, she feels as though she has lost everything—except for her innate compassion. Arriving in the small and tight-knit community of Settlers Bridge, Amelia is resolute in her decision never to allow anyone to penetrate the walls she has built around her heart. The fear of embracing love and potentially replacing the vivid memories of her past terrifies her, driving her to maintain a solitary existence.

Meanwhile, widower Heath Brennan wrestles with his own demons. After the tragic accident that took his wife away from him, he has succumbed to a life of anger and self-recrimination. Heath, once an outgoing and loving husband, has become a virtual recluse, haunted by guilt and grief that refuses to let him go. With unresolved anguish echoing in his heart, he finds it increasingly difficult to navigate his days, often retreating into isolation to avoid confronting his pain.

Adding to the complexity of Heath’s life is his nineteen-year-old daughter, Charlee, who is caught in her own battle against despair. Once a bright and promising student, Charlee has spiralled into the clutches of drug addiction, transforming her into a shadow of her former self. The deep-seated rage she feels towards her father for the death of her mother creates an insurmountable barrier between them, hindering any hope of reconciliation or understanding as they both grapple with loss in isolation.

**Wings Above the Mallee** unfolds as a poignant exploration of loss, love, and the challenging journey toward redemption. In this moving narrative, each character learns that healing a broken heart requires courage and that the first step often involves facing their fears and reaching out to one another.

As I delved into this story, I found many of the characters grappling with profound losses and grief, each in their own distinct manner. Personally, I found the book difficult to read due to my own experiences with loss over the past year, which may have hindered my ability to fully connect with the characters and their struggles. Despite this, I want to emphasize that my difficulties in engaging with the story should not be seen as a reflection of the author's remarkable talent for storytelling. The depth of emotion and complexity woven throughout the narrative is undeniably compelling.

Wings Above the Mallee is the emotional new rural romance from Léonie Kelsall. This was my first read from this prolific Aussie author but it won’t be my last.

“Running away. That’s what life was all about. Running away from guilt and from emotions.”

Amelia is running away from tragedy. Careful not to settle in one place for too long or form any connections, her animals and flying are her whole life. Arriving in Settlers Bridge, she meets Heath who is also grieving. Surly and damaged, his father Sean is his only real contact. His nineteen year old daughter Charlee has her own demons which also add to Heath’s guilt. Heath and Amelia have more in common than they realise, but will this bring them together, or will they both continue to blame themselves for the past and hide behind their grief?

Wings Above the Mallee was an incredibly emotional read full of grief and guilt, but balanced by love and hope. Amelia’s “feathered and furred” family were such a highlight of this read and their antics lightened the mood when it was most needed.

Heath and Amelia were both wonderfully engaging characters. Watching them punish themselves for past tragedies was devastating, but their actions were also incredibly understandable. I also really connected with Charlee and Sean.

The fabulous community of Settlers Bridge was such a warm and welcoming place and now that I know Léonie has set some of her other books there, I will be returning to the town very soon.

Another installment in Leonie Kelsall's rivetting country romance reads set in Settlers Bridge.

Amelia Fraser finds herself flying into Settlers Bridge to start a temping job that will keep her busy, and hopefully stop her thinking about her tragic past. She is determined to keep to herself and never let anybody close again.

Amelia meets Heath Brennan, a widower who has become a recluse, stricken with guilt and grief after the death of his wife. He is also struggling with his drug-dependant daughter who is battling with her own demons.

There is an attraction between the two, but will their harrowing losses of the past, and their grief bring them together or tear them apart?

Once again, Leonie Kelsall has kept me captivated with the good people of Settlers Bridge! Where is this place, I'd really like to move there!!

I love the mentions of the local nearby townships and city, which are actual places known to this old born and bred South Aussie girl. It brings so much realism to the stories along with real-life dramas and relationship struggles that can only be written to this level of understanding from great insight! I think our girl Leonie has a great deal of wisdom, intelligence, common sense and experience in those deep pockets of hers!

I listened to Wings Above The Mallee as an audiobook and I just loved it. Narrator Casey Withoos brought the characters to life, while author by Leonie Kelsall delivered an engaging story. I loved the setting in Settlers Bridge, South Australia where the quintessential country characters made me feel right at home.Bush pilot Amelia Fraser is in town on a short contract. She’s lost everything and is determined not to let anybody close again. Widower Heath Brennan is fighting his grief over the loss of his wife in an accident, which has also turned his bright and bubbly daughter Charlee into a drug addict, who seems to live her life blaming Heath for everything. Against this background, it is hard to see how Amelia and Heath could possibly find a future together, yet as their story progresses they slowly heal and grow closer. Loss and grief are certainly central themes in this story, but there’s also plenty of hope and healing and, of course, there’s that wonderful welcoming feel that only country towns seem to be able to deliver. This has been a great story!

Leonie Kelsall is quickly becoming one of my favourite rural storytellers, with Wings Above the Mallee a fabulous addition to the Settlers Bridge community.

It was quite different to Kelsall's previous books, in terms of this one being a bit of a heavier read with grief a focus of three of the main characters. But I found this central story of loss, love and being brave to find yourself again heartwarming and I found myself really hoping these characters would find themselves, and happiness, again as the story unfolded.

I really enjoyed the writing style and pace of this one too. The landscape descriptions from Amelia's perspective in her plane were just beautiful. I also adored Amelia's menagerie aspect which added much need lightness and fun.

I definitely recommend this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Allen & Unwin for a copy to review honestly and in advance.

Amelia grew up on her family's outback property and since she left there she hasn't stopped running. Arriving in Settler's Bridge for a short stay, Amelia parks her light plane in the hangar on the Brennan's property.

Amelia takes the Brennan's orphaned sheep under her wing to care for along with her pets, Biggles the possum and Dusty her magpie.

Amelia makes autonomous connections with all of the Brennan's but she harbours a secret from her past that means she does not want to get too close to anyone.

It is challenging for Amelia as community members and the Brennan's embrace her. They want her to stay on in town but how will she be able to settle?

In this book the author, Leonie Kelsall, delivers more likeable characters and takes us into another beautiful rural setting in the state of South Australia.

This book explores love, loss, grief and the challenges to living life after tradegy.

Wings Above the Mallee by Leonie Kelsall is the story of Amelia Fraser who flies to Settlers Bridge to stay for a short time. She has been running away from memories for a few years now and doesn't expect this place to be any different. The only reprieve she has is when she's flying her trusty plane and is free in the air. She also enjoys looking after her magpie and possum.
Heath Brennan is a widower having troubles with his daughter Charlee and battling his own demons after his wife died. He doesn't like to be around people and can't handle his emotions. He lives with his Dad who tries to heal their family as much as he can.
Life is not fun for any of them but when they meet all their lives change is so many ways. This brings up many questions for them amid doubts they can cope with the changes. This book has many heavy themes such as grief, loss, addiction and guilt. As we get more into the story and the town gets involved the characters show more dimensions and there are some lighter moments while working through issues. I really enjoyed the way this evolved and think there are lessons for everyone if they're open to them. Love comes in many forms which were also explored in relatable ways.
I love Leonie's books and this is another winner.

This story is heartbreaking and gut wrenching yet simultaneously heart warming. I loved every second of this book and spent my entire holiday devouring it. Amelia’s backstory is devastating and her character today comes through clearly and strong based on her experience.

Heath and Amelia overcoming their persona issues and learning to trust one another is realistic and beautiful to watch.

I wish I could go back and read this again for the first time.

Wings Above the Mallee is a moving story of finding oneself and their ability to move on from previous heartbreak.

The character of Amelia appears a strong woman, not afraid of flying her plane or rescuing animals. But deep down, Amelia hides her pain by moving around to stop the pain from creeping in.

Heath is in a similar situation. He is a recluse due to a trauma he and his daughter suffered and he feels that hiding makes it easier, rather than deal with anyone.

What I loved about this book, was that the animals mentioned in the book brought people together and allowed their emotions to be addressed.

Wings Above the Mallee is an emotional and heartfelt read that delves deep into grief, healing, and second chances.

Amelia Fraser is a bush pilot escaping a tragedy that’s left her emotionally guarded. Heath Brennan is a widower riddled with guilt, struggling to reconnect with his daughter, Charlee, who’s battling her own inner demons.

When their paths cross, the journey that unfolds is full of emotional depth and quiet strength. It’s not an easy path, but it’s a hopeful one—and one that reminds us that happiness can still exist after loss.

I loved everything about this book. The themes of courage, loss, and redemption are handled so beautifully. A captivating rural fiction read that leaves a lasting impression.

A story of loss, grief, addiction, healing, finding love, learning to trust and mending broken relationships.

Majority of the characters are dealing with a loss or grief of some kind and all in their own different ways - the way Leonie wrote and intertwined their lives and situations was done with a lot of care and truly captured how difficult going through such things are.

I unfortunately just found the rest of the story along with the above just didn’t quite click - there were the RAG meetings which I found repetitive and tedious, there is a petition for a skatepark for the youth of the town, discussions of a petting zoo and just a few other little things that were just a bit much.

If just a couple of these added storylines were taken out, this would have hit the mark.

I’ve reached chapter 10
This is a very gloomy story.
I like happy country people who are living their best like , not drop kicks who are so dysfunctional druggies who whose father issues.

Can’t see the happy ending at all.
I wasn’t happy with the last Kelsall book so should have given this one a big miss.
Resorted to skimming from chapter 11 just in case it gets better. I do t want to read about the drugged up youth thanks. I’m not interested in the craved home boyfriend of the chick with father issues! Oh my goodness…. She needs deliverance!

That pilot should have got in her plan and flew far far away. She’s really a background character…. The druggies are stealing her thunder.

After a lot of skimming… chapter 25 stated Ethan the pedophile is the girls mentor… it’s not what it seems 👀
Well I’m glad I didn’t miss that gold nugget.
Still a whiny lot of characters.
So cashed up Amelia us going to built the skatepark… it’s usually a Reno on a house or pub but this girls spending on a concrete skate park down town country town for the druggies to all hang out at 🤔 I don’t think I met the local coppers 😂 they might need a new recruit to patrol the park 🤔 And the. She goes into business with the drug addict … that’s not wise 🤔 good job it’s fiction.

Chucked the last few chapters and went straight to authors note.
