She turned to face her. “I know you’ve had a lot of people in your life who didn’t want you enough or didn’t care about you the way you deserved, and I need you to know that stops with me.”
“It does?” Olivia whispered.
Slowly, Margaret stroked her cheek with the back of her knuckles. “It does. Anything you want, ask me. If I can give it, I will try. And to be very clear,” she said intently, her gaze locked on Olivia’s, “I do want you.” Then she kissed her.

Vengeance Planning for Amateurs sucked me in and didn't spit me back out until I read the last word of the book. I can't even describe how amazing it felt to get enchanted by a book again, to the point of reading it in one sitting.

As some may have noticed I haven't been reading much at all these past months, mainly because the university-assigned reading has left no room for my favourite pastime: reading sapphic books that make me go psychologically insane and giggle and re-realise how gay I am. But now that I'm back on the bandwagon I do NOT plan to get off. "Get off"...lol. Now that I'm back in Winter's grasp, I'll probably have to go and read whatever books of hers are left that I haven't read. (I think it's only Changing the Script 💔).

Enough about me, how shall I pitch this book... Well, the set up is just such fun. As you may be able to tell from the title, we follow Olivia (h), a muffin business owner, and the owner of the bookstore she hosts her bookclub at, Margaret (h) as they embark on a quest to get revenge on all of Olivia's exes.

Winter has declared this her first RomCom and I'd have to agree. I admit I was unused to the lighthearted tone of the book but that didn't last very long, lol, Winter always incorporates some grit and depth into her novels.

Brief intermission: I just need a second to complain about the name choices. I simply cannot keep track of all the gay Olivias. Or Olivia's in general!! And sorry to break it to any authors but Olivia Jaeger is the best Olivia so you've gotta pick a somewhat more unique name to make your character stand out. And Margaret? That was the name of my Scottish choir director who had a fascination with the royal family 😭.

Genuinely, choosing more unique names would make the characters more memorable. For instance, everyone knows who Inej is and what book she's from (if they've read it of course — Six of Crows ). In the past Winter has chosen names like Lena, Felicity or Eden which I think are much better in comparison. Now I'm sure it's unintentional, but another one if the most popular sapphic books Count Your Lucky Stars had characters names Olivia and Margot. It's just too similar, please we need to switch it up!

Okay intermission over. Back to our regularly scheduled programming of me saying that Winter is too good of an author — she is. Here, she's added so much nuance and thoughtfulness to nearly every aspect of the novel. I truly didn't expect our love intrest to be a so that added a layer of complexity for sure.

The little things started to pile up, leading to a convincing connection between our two heroines, and the way they began to care for and weaken for each other was very endearing.

"...but after that, will you join me?”
“I’d love to.”
“All right, then.” Margaret pulled away. She sighed at herself. “No. I need one more for the road.” She leaned in and kissed Olivia once more, softly and wistfully.

However, unfortunately for Winter, she's her own greatest competitor. It seems unfair to rate this more harshly (I'm literally just rounding it down rather than up, don't know why I'm being so dramatic), because I know Winter is capable of a little better.

The characters this time didn't stand out to me. Their background, hobbies and motivations were sound, but their personalities were not as memorable as characters have been in Winter's past novels. Don't get me wrong, I was squealing all throughout because that's what happens when you pick up a Winter book regardless. Margaret (the appointed love interest) did have her moments. I liked how commanding and direct she was.

*Gives list of her qualifications*
“You left off modest.”
“You wish me to feign a mediocrity I don’t possess?” Dr Blackwood’s eyebrow lifted. “No.”

I liked how she had a weakness for our protagonist, and I loved to read her diary entries, I thought that was a very nice touch.

However, overall, I can't say there were many moments of gravity and tension. Toward the end there were some, and maybe I'm just more partial to Winter's hand at darker, more serious plotlines and situations, but I kept hoping for more intensity in the moments they were together.

Their first kiss was cute, but it didn't have as much build up as I tend to enjoy in other Winter novels, and there's only . The rest is fade to black and, to be honest. Winter has written better sex scenes too. That's not the say the was bad, but the dialogue wasn't the best.

It feels so cruel to complain about dialogue being millennial but! 😭 the whole "you like when I'm badass? or my awesomeness? hehe" made me cringe a lil too hard. Also, when Margaret would validate Olivia's emotions she would ALWAYS respond with something adjacent to "really? you don't think I'm stupid and it's all my fault?".

On the topic of Olivia, she was...also not the best heroine. She had a very doe-eyed personality, and naivete became frustrating at times. Apparently what Margaret likes about her is her ability to make Margaret want to tell her things? Okay... I just am quite a fan of Winter's usual power couple pairings. Not that a kind-hearted muffin business owner cannot be a powerful woman or that you have to be mean and cold to be one, that's not what I mean. It's the mega-innocence that I didn't love, but maybe that's a me thing.

Though to be fair, she had some serious character development, which was probably what Winter was going for. She really learns to stand on business by the end.

Still, Winter never fails to make me feel, and I felt a LOT. I also really loved all the side characters, Winter was really great at making the setting and surroundings very vivid. The plotline was thought through so well, I loved how seamlessly everything worked out in the end. And you know what? I have a newfound respect for taxidermy.

Overall, though I shat on this book a lil, I truly think it was an absorbing, endearing read, especially for those who are less into Winter's grittier books. Please check TWs though. TW: .

100% worth the read, a great way to start my 2024 sapphic reading, I'll always be looking forward to Winter's releases.

Lee Winter has outdone herself with Vengeance Planning for Amateurs. She has created an epic romantic comedy for us all to enjoy.

Olivia’s life is fraught with the disappointment of being taken advantage of by her ex’s. Revenge becomes Olivia’s new mantra but she is just too nice to be diabolical. Olivia decides that she needs a henchperson for guidance.

Vengeance Planning for Amateurs is a fun romp with laugh out loud dialogue, a sexy Ice Queen with a razor sharp tongue and a bookstore full of offbeat characters. What could go wrong? Or right?

I was so disappointed to wake up this morning with the realization that I had finished this book last night. It was ridiculously funny and I wanted more. Olivia is a sweet, thoughtful person who bakes award winning muffins and supplies them to small businesses throughout Melbourne. One of those spots is the cafe/crime bookstore where her sister works. Liv has reached a watershed moment in which she has decided to confront her abusive ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends and in order to move forward, she has to ask or demand what is owed to her. Margaret, the acerbic, elitist academic, who owns the cafe/bookstore, agrees to help.

Olivia is the one we cheer for but Margaret is the character who steals the show. Their banter had me laughing deep into the night and awake longer than I should have been. The story is chock full of hijinks, quirky bookclub members, and a love for food. Too many details to describe but it’s like a surprise funbox where you continuously find small humorous bits.

What I also liked about the book is watching Olivia and Margaret grow as individuals. One of my favorite things about Lee Winter books is that alongside the angst is an adult conversation. We all like that literary bite to the heart but it’s satisfying to see a couple evolve through communication. 4.5 stars rounded up and I look forward to a future audiobook.

This book was everything. It was hilarious, heartwarming, heartbreaking, happy, haunting, and likely a bunch of other H-words I’m not creative enough to string together. I would recommend it for absolutely everyone. It has a mix of elements that provide something for everyone; it’s a sweet romance that also tackles heavier topics, all wrapped up in a package of hilarious misadventures and vengeance.

After Olivia, our golden retriever-sunshine-cinnamon bun protagonist, gets her treasured taxidermy penguin stolen she embarks on a journey of vengeance against her four evil exes. Unfortunately vengeance isn’t in her wheelhouse, so she posts an open call for henchperson interviews. Dr. Margaret Blackwood, a frosty and cynical academic (ugh!), applies and the results are a delightful yet emotional thrill ride of a novel. If that description doesn’t grab your attention, then you don’t like fun!

The general premise of the novel made me expect something overly wacky that required far to much suspension of disbelief or unreasonable good luck on the part of the protagonists, and this is NOT what I found. Despite the wacky premise the novel is grounded and realistic (in a good way that doesn’t distract from the plot) while still being outlandish and entertaining. Peppered throughout were more serious elements while both characters address their difficult pasts (you don’t get a list of evil exes without some issues to work through!) which added some great depth to the novel.

The romance was very well done, but also not the primary focus of the novel (which I like). The characters acted realistically and like real adults which was refreshing, and they both had great character arcs that were noticeable and satisfying. There was a whole host of side characters who enriched the novel and made the setting feel larger and more lived-in; particularly the down on their luck family that featured heavily throughout the novel to great effect (I loved them so much and wanted to reach into the book and lend a helping hand!).

I can’t believe this was my first Lee Winter novel, and I found it entirely by accident. I have read all of their other novels now and they are incredible!

Updated after audiobook listen:

This book went from a 4.5 to a 5 after listening to Cat Gould’s outstanding narration. Her Dr. Margaret Blackwood is one for the books! Hilarious and sexy.

This is a story that builds and I loved it more as it went along. My favorite parts are in the last quarter and it’s worth the wait!

4.5 stars

This is a really fun book where Lee Winter joyfully flexes her comedic muscles. The next closest in tone of hers would be Changing the Script - but you can’t really compare the two.

Olivia Roberts is a kind, loving, muffin-baking entrepreneur who has been taken advantage of for the last time by romantic partners and decides to recruit folks to help her get back at those who have grossly wronged her. She does so at a crime bookstore owned by icy, brilliant and well read Dr. Margaret Blackwood, whose acerbic tongue rivals the best of any of Winter’s previous ice queens. Those who follow Winter on social media will understand when I say that I wondered while reading this if the character is a homage to her fiancée Sam, because as sharp-tongued as she is, her behind the scenes commentary is also hilarious.

As we’ve come to expect from this author, the book is not just humorous, but wonderfully clever - from the chapter headings and slogans on buttons Olivia wears daily, to the books and Australian history referenced throughout. And if you pay attention to details, there are some not-so-hidden nuggets that make you smile all the more.

Go into this one expecting lighter fare and then hang on for the ride!

5 Stars!!!

Lee Winter has a particular brand of ice queen that is 100% up my alley. Haughty, acerbic, intelligent, capable and frosty women are THE BEST ICE QUEENS. Pair that with sunshine and rainbows personality but highly sharp? Perfect match.

Going in I had zero expectations about a stolen taxidermied penguin. It’s Lee Winter so just trust the process. I laughed and cried. It’s been a while since I did both because of a story. All aspects of the book was deliciously devoured.

This has been a fun and entertaining story, at times crazy, at others sad. It took a while to connect with the plot, but the introduction also makes sense. Because the characters, both the protagonists and the multiple supporting characters, all play an important role in the story, so it pays to be patient.

The main character is Olivia Roberts, who owns a muffin business and counts Mary Buggs's Bookstore among her clients. Olivia is positive, she trusts others and that has caused her to be taken advantage of on multiple occasions, especially all of her exes. But she'll draw the line when her latest ex steals her most prized possession, her stuffed penguin, Trip, inherited from her nana Betty. That will trigger a desire for revenge on Olivia's part towards her exes. But she does not have a vengeful mentality so she must hire a henchperson to plan her actions.

It is then that Olivia begins to interact with the owner of Mary Bugg's Bookstore, Dr Margaret Blackwood, reclusive, mysterious, haughty and unapproachable Dr. Blackwood. Cynical and contemptuous too. But for some reason Margaret feels protective of Olivia and that will benefit both of them.

The book's dialogues are fun, complex and elaborate. Nothing is left unexplained. Even intimate conversations are genuine and honest, however harsh and cruel they may have been at times. But the personalities of the two protagonists, certainly antagonistic, have led to these extreme emotional situations.

A refreshing book that I definitely recommend.

This is an unusual Lee Winter book in that it is a bonafide romantic comedy. I thought it was silly and ridiculous but in a good way.

The premise is a bit absurd in itself. Olivia, tired of being taken advantage of, decides to get revenge on her exes. She needs a “henchperson” to assist her and Margaret applies for the job. Olivia and Margaret are as different as night and day. Olivia is the sunny, sweet one whereas Margaret is the grumpy ice queen. It makes for an amusing journey on their way to love. Silly, right?

It’s told from Olivia’s pov. There are some journal entries from Margaret that allows the reader to be in her head space about her feelings. The journal entries were very helpful in the beginning because Margaret was closed off in her interactions with Olivia. This is a slow burn and Margaret’s melting was nuanced. I enjoyed her insights and the way she processed her feelings through the journal entries.

I thought this was good fun and enjoyed my time with it. While it is ridiculous for the most part, there were a few serious moments. Those moments were fantastic and allowed me to take these women and their lives more seriously and gave them more depth.

Also, if you don’t like muffin puns you may want to skip this.

Recommended!

What a funny, ridiculous, and brilliant book! I absolutely loved Margaret and Olivia together—their scheming was both charming and hilarious. Margaret’s passive-aggressive comments had me laughing out loud, while their patience and protectiveness toward one another made their bond all the more endearing. I ended up loving this way more than I expected!

You muffin miss this read!

Olivia makes muffins and runs a crime book club at a local bookstore, but when her ex steals Trip, the stuffed penguin her nana left her, she is on a mission to recruit a henchperson to help her get a little revenge on all her past lovers who have wronged her. It is Margaret Blackwood, elusive owner of the bookstore who comes to her rescue, and together they make quite the team!

Awesome! Loved every second of this. It was quirkier than I am used to with a Lee Winter story, but that only endeared me to the whole story even more. The title eludes to a dark story, yet with the humour it just made it really fun and playful while Olivia, Margaret, and all the brilliantly unique characters from the bookstore and book club got involved in Olivia’s planned revenge. Margaret had that cunning clever only someone with an ice queen persona can possess, but there was more to her than the average ice queen, which just made me love her.

Now, Olivia, the kindest and sweetest person who people who were supposed to love her had been absolutely awful to, so I totally got her reasons for wanting her revenge. Even though she’d been pushed too far though, she was still lovely and kind, and showed real growth in accepting that just because she was good didn’t mean she deserved or had to take any of what had been dealt to her. I admired her greatly, and even when she was exacting revenge, she was still so kind and caring, so she really, really, needed Margaret’s help in making sure these exes knew she was serious about making it clear she’d been hurt and would take no more.

This was just so good that you have to read it! I loved it, couldn’t put it down, and know I will read it again and again. It was filled with brilliant moments that’ll make you laugh and put a smile on your face, while you fall in love with Olivia and Margaret falling in love with one another in the most unlikely of situations.

Well, Lee Winter definitely steps out of her comfort zone for this one. It was absurd in a very fun way.

The book was written from Olivia's point of view with some excerpts from Margaret's journal that show enough of her point of view to keep the reader from getting frustrated. Margaret was definitely the most interesting and intriguing character. The main quality of this book is how "alive" it is. The book club members bring even more life, making the vengeance scheme become a joyful mess. Olivia wears her heart on her sleeve and even gives her shirt to others, making malicious people take advantage of her. Margaret is aloof and an introvert who shuts people out after grief strikes her. Olivia takes her out of her shell in her ridiculous way, and it was nice to read.

Sadly, the chemistry between them was not Winter’s main focus, and at some point, it was a bit too close to friendship for me. Some other topics didn’t really speak to me, like bushrangers, but that’s totally on me, my mind being a million years from my own country’s history, let alone Australia’s. I also admit that Olivia’s niceness, tiptoeing around being a total doormat, and being such a big victim was a bit frustrating to read even if I felt sorry for her.

Despite some things that didn’t speak to me, it was a fun read, and I always appreciate Winter's pen.

This was fun.
I'm generally not fond of the rom-com genre, but I enjoyed this book.
Even though Olivia frustrated me at times. A lot. And the plot itself was rather absurd (although for rom-com standards it was probably very reasonable).

This is a story about Olivia Roberts who drives an old van and makes muffins in her home kitchen for sale to various coffee shops and a bookstore. Olivia also leads a book club discussion group at this same bookstore that specializes in mystery books. And especially Australian brushrangers and the cops who hunted them down.

The bookstore owner, Margaret Blackwood, is brilliant, aloof and a very private person. Margaret’s mother is the vice chancellor at the same university where Margaret used to be a professor. And her mother is extremely controlling and demanding. Margaret, who has suffered a personal tragedy, decides to help Olivia get revenge on her exes, who have all done something terrible to her.

This book has a bunch of dry humor and was a change of pace from Winter’s normal style. But, Margaret was every bit the ice queen character as Winter is the expert at developing. And Olivia is the bumbling, shy, younger character we have seen before.

At the 75% mark there is an awesome Easter Egg that made me so happy to see a glimpse of my most favorite Winter character from a previous book. Yeah for adding that. And this part of the book was very well written when we have the showdown between Olivia and Margaret’s mother. Sooooo good.

Also I was happy to learn about Ned Kelly and the history of Australian Brushrangers.

Thanks to Ylva Publishing and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this ARC. .

I was really worried to read this as I wasn't sure such a quirkly blurb would lead to a decent story. I shouldn't have worried - Lee Winter outdid herself with this one!

Vengeance Planning for Amateurs is a delightful mix of sharp wit, endearing characters, and a refreshingly unique premise. Olivia Roberts, a sweet and accommodating muffin entrepreneur, has reached her breaking point after years of being taken advantage of by exes. Determined to take matters into her own hands, she turns to the icy and intellectually intimidating Dr. Margaret Blackwood, the owner of a crime-themed bookstore, for guidance in her quest for revenge.

Winter’s hallmark is her masterful creation of Ice Queens, and Margaret is no exception. Her razor-sharp tongue and sarcastic humor steal every scene she’s in, making her a character you can’t help but love. Olivia, on the other hand, is the perfect foil—kindhearted, optimistic, and full of surprises. The banter between them is laugh-out-loud funny, and their dynamic evolves beautifully, blending humour with genuine emotional depth.

This book is more than just a romantic comedy; it’s a clever exploration of growth, self-worth, and unexpected connections. From the quirky cast of supporting characters to the clever chapter headings and literary Easter eggs, Winter’s writing shines with creativity and charm. Perfect for anyone in the mood for a smart, feel-good story with heart and hilarity. A great book and I definitely recommend giving the audiobook a go too - Cat Gould's narration is fab!

This is another win for Winter. (God I hope that’s one of those things that is said so much it has gotten old.) Winter is a phenomenal storyteller with a talent for carrying the reader through the emotional depths of her characters. You really experience the shallows of their grief and highs of each and every win. It was as romcomy as I would expected; cute and definitely a little absurd at times. Overall, an enjoyable, quick read I didn’t want to put down. And here comes the but, BUT, it didn’t hit the same mark for me the way Winter’s other books hit. To be honest, she has a really high bar, so keep that in mind. I think the story was just a little far fetched for my tastes, and the characters just a little too much for me. One was a little too austere and hermited, and the other a little too bubbly and sweet. And a henchperson? It’s funny i guess, but just a bit on the bizarre side.

That being said, I really did enjoy everything about this book. It was refreshing to read an uplifting book for a change of pace. Of course there was an emotional blip at the 70% mark, but not the typical earth shattering drop I was prepared for. Yes it was tough for a min, but it was a quick minute. Minimal angst is my jam. I don’t enjoy feeling like garbage so I really appreciated this more uplifting tale.

What a treat, my favourite book of the year so far, and it's only January! My first book by Australian Lee Winter, who it seems has written several other books, which I will need to discover.

Olivia is a prize winning muffin maker who also runs a weekly book club at Mary Buggs Bookstore, which happens to be owned by the reclusive Margaret and named for her favourite busranger, much better than the overrated Ned Kelly. This very slow burn romance has enough fun going on and excellent snarky dialogue to satisfy every need. I loved just about everything about this clever and entertaining romp through Melbourne.

As much as I loved the story and wonderful characters and adventures, a very slight niggle with a full on sex scene towards the end. I have no problems whatsoever with a racy sex scene, just did not work in with the entire tenet of the story for me. But five full stars from me nonetheless, so much fun.

This was a cute story that was very unique. It did take me a bit to get into the flow of it but once I did I enjoyed it. Olivia and Dr Blackwood complimented each other really well throughout the story from acquaintances to friends to lovers. It is a very slow burn and at first I didn’t feel the chemistry between them, but as the book progressed that grew and could feel it once they finally got together.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW - October 2024

I had a fantastic time listening to “Vengeance Planning for Amateurs,” and wow, did Cat Gould truly take Lee Winter’s words to another level! She aaaaaaaaate! 🔥

I enjoyed this audiobook from start to finish. This was my first time listening to Gould, and it definitely won’t be the last! Winter’s romantic comedy is as sharp and delightful as ever, and I’m thrilled that Gould is such an effective voice actor! Her narration truly brought the emotions to life—making me feel every moment even more deeply. Like, I found myself extra seething over Olivia’s exes (looking at you, Annalise!) and, most of all, over Margaret’s mother!

Gould’s narration elevated Olivia’s and Margaret’s vulnerabilities and their dynamic; I rooted for and cried with them even harder! 🩵

Plus, Gould’s Aussie accent made my favourite funny moments even more hilarious! I laughed with extra delight with the secondary characters, aka the Book Club Squad—the comedic spice in this romantic comedy.

In other words, Gould’s narration of “Vengeance…” made me an instant fan! ❤️‍🔥 Thus, I’m giving this audiobook my loudest recommendation! Whether you’ve read the book or not, Cat Gould’s first-ever narration of a Lee Winter book is a must-listen!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

P.S. Now I’m off to save money so I can buy another Cat Gould-narrated audiobook—Jess Lea’s “A Curious Woman.” I can’t wait to hear her performance as another formidable Margaret!!

BOOK REVIEW - Feb 2024
5+ stars – and then some!

If you're in for a wild ride filled with laughs, suspense, and sizzling romance, look no further than "Vengeance Planning for Amateurs" by Lee Winter. This book is like a delicious mishmash of genres, blending comedy, suspense, and romance into one heck of a page-turner.

From start to finish, Winter kept me hooked with her signature wit and clever storytelling. I found myself chuckling at the hilarious antics of the characters one moment, on the edge of my seat the next, and fanning myself from the steamy, off-the-charts romance in between. And let me tell you, Winter's descriptions of muffins were so vivid, I found myself craving them for days on end, despite never being much of a muffin person before.

But the real star of the show is Margaret Blackwood, the ultimate ice queen who steals my heart and leaves me swooning. As someone who's been a fan of Winter's work for years, I never thought anyone could rival Catherine Ayers as my ultimate favorite Lee Winter Ice Queen. But Margaret Blackwood proved me wrong, and now I find myself torn between two formidable fictional lovers. 😳🫣

In summary, "Vengeance Planning for Amateurs" is a must-read for anyone who loves smart, exhilarating storytelling. Winter has once again knocked it out of the park with this novel, leaving me eager for whatever she has in store next.

Wanted: One delightfully hilarious rom-com.
Lee Winter: Delivered.

Comedy of errors with a feisty ingenue verse the softest ice queen ever. Dr. Blackwood never really stood a chance!
- taxidermic penguin
- dead lousy guard peacock
- gravity defying ladder
- so many muffins
- book club (yay!)
- Miss Honey reference!
- Anne of Green Gables reference!!
- painful pasts
- several winterverse easter eggs
- agile russians
- and I think, the mafia??

Whatever you think this book is—it’s so much more! The structure and set-up of the novel are creative and interesting. The characters are as real as the rest of the Winterverse. Lee really leaned into the humor! All the witty one-liners you love are here AND we get to see this duo fail successfully over and over again.

Olivia just doesn’t understand why she keeps getting treated horribly by all of her exes. We see her soft and overly trusting nature screw her over one time too many. She’s fed up, and finally ready to do something about it. But knowing your exes deserve a taste of their own medicine and having the constitution for implementation are very different. Enter Dr. Blackwood.

Day 1123 post H, something happens and then there was your life before, and your life after. Dr. Blackwood has not just shut down, she’s shut out—the world and everyone in it—until she can’t help but crack the door open on a little crime novel book club in her little crime novel bookstore. The predictability of their merry band of chaos is acerbic catnip and Dr. Blackwood can’t resist.

I’m impressed with how will the comedy and romance overlay and interplay. They are distinct, yet symbiotic. At times, I got so lost in the sometimes-revenge-sometimes-healing hilarity that the romance of it all caught me off guard. Watching Margaret shed the layers of grief and start to live her life again would capture my whole heart—followed by a side-splitting one liner that brought the comedy back.

This is a slow-burn explicit rom-com. “Chapter 28: Wanting.” I want more…books like this.

Favorite Quotes:
“You know, you can call me Margaret, if you wish.”

“Not everyone deserves access to me.”

“She is a curious, baffling woman. Her courage is astonishing.”

“She held out her emotions to me—pointed right at them as if they were a small helpless bird—and asked to know mine in return.”

“I don’t blame you if you feel terrified of more pain…I’m just sad about it.”

First off, let's all agree that Lee Winter has nailed the title of the year; it's early, but this one will be a tough act to follow. In fact, the whole book sits at the top of my list. I'm sure there will be other fantastic releases, but Vengeance Planning for Amateurs is truly one of a kind.

Olivia leads a content life as a baker, friend, sister, and affable leader of a unique crime book club. Tired of being taken for granted in relationships, she cooks up a plan to exact revenge on her exes and places and ad looking for a henchperson (paying in muffins, naturally).

She is surprised when the reclusive and snarky bookstore owner, where her club gathers, applies for the job. With limited options, Olivia reluctantly gives the perplexing woman a chance. As they navigate Olivia's revenge list, their attempts often end in comical failures, yet somehow, they still manage to succeed. Amid the chaos, a love story unfolds, but both Olivia and Margaret must confront their feelings before trusting their hearts.

Lee Winter is THE Ice Queen writer, and she seamlessly weaves her signature style into this comedic masterpiece. Witnessing Olivia's journey to rediscover love and trust, alongside a well-developed cast of side-characters, makes this novel a heartwarming exploration of revenge and romance. Vengeance Planning for Amateurs delivers a refreshingly original and captivating romance that had me completely immersed and grinning non-stop.

I received an ARC from YLVA publishing via NetGalley and am leaving a voluntary review.

As someone who has read and enjoyed several of Lee Winter’s books, I have to admit I was intrigued that she chose to write a romantic comedy. While not being her usual genre, with Vengeance Planning for Amateurs I would argue that she’s proved herself as versatile as the best in the business. Full of humor and fun Australian bushranger history, this book is a well-crafted wild ride that packs an emotional punch.

Perfect for fans of slowly melting Ice Queens and well, complete idiots, this book was just as absurd as the blurb promised (and I mean that in a good way). With her first foray into this genre Winter did a wonderful job of balancing the comedy with heartwarming romance and great character development. I highly recommend this book and am very much hoping she continues to explore this genre in the future.

I received an ARC copy of this ebook from Netgalley and all opinions are my own.

3.5/4. Olivia, a skilled muffin maker known for her kindness, finds herself fed up of being taken advantage of by her past partners. Margaret is the reclusive bookstore owner. They team up to deal out revenge to all of Olivia’s past partners. It took me longer to get into the story because I simply did not like Olivia’s naive nature. The humor drew me into the story, along with the slow burn. Not my favorite Winter book but, I enjoyed it! I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 without rounding up for now, I think.

This was honestly hard for me to rate. Some of Lee Winter's books are still one of my favourite romances. And this one was well written and engaging. I genuinely liked not only the main characters but secondary ones as well. But it didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

It was so not my type of humour. I think I hold very high standards for romcomcs in general. They need to make me laugh out loud for me to be impressed, which didn't happen in this case. I did smile while reading, but I'm just not a fan of an over exaggerated writing style to the point of it being utterly ridiculous for the sake of the genre.

The chemistry also didn't seem crazy good to me. It was just pleasant. I'd still recommend it, though.

A rather strange novel that didn’t make me laugh but was odd enough that I kept on reading and finished it. Unlike anything else I’ve read. Worth a gander.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lee Winter’s first (and hopefully not last) romcom. Vengeance Planning for Amateurs was a delightful read - her signature wit and clever storytelling were on full display. The humor was fantastic, and I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. The quirky dynamic between Olivia and Margaret was a lot of fun, and their journey from adversaries to something more was both entertaining and heartwarming.

All in all, this was a wonderful, light-hearted read with plenty of laughs, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a witty, feel-good rom-com. Can’t wait to see what Lee Winter does next!

Audiobook Review:

I also had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook version. Cat Gould did an excellent job bringing the characters to life, capturing the humor and emotional depth of the story. It was a fun and immersive experience that added another layer to the already delightful story.

As expected and anticipated, a great read. Hilarious of course but I’ll admit I had a couple of incidences of ‘lump in the throat’.
Two clueless characters, clueless in very different ways and said with absolute affection, set out on a journey of vengeance. And just as an aside, vengeance was totally justifiable and necessary to all parties, the characters and this reader.
Olivia was a lovely soul pushed to her niceness limits and Dr B was, well, delicious. (I can just see the expression on her face if she knew I’d said that, so our lips are sealed. Okay?) The other cast members, aka aiders and abettors, rounded out the story nicely.
What else? Read and enjoy.

Vengeance Planning for Amateurs by Lee Winter is a fun rom-com that will make you laugh, snort, and wonder how two very capable women can be so bad at vengeancing.

I love this book, so much. I’ve already read it twice and could happily read it again and again. It is different from what we usually get from Winter, but no less brilliant or enjoyable.

Usually, in a Winter, ice queen novel I’m all about the ice queen, but this time it was an equal 50/50 split. I adore both characters so much.

Dr Margaret Blackwood is an icy recluse. She has her reasons for shutting herself away. She left the world of academia behind a few years ago and now owns a crime bookstore. Hidden away in her office she is rarely seen or heard from. Except for once a week when she opens her door to ‘join’ the WOMEN IN CRIME book club meetings. For two years she listens in silence until one day it seems she can hold her tongue no more and her acerbic comments float out the door.

Olivia Roberts is kind, sweet, and good-intentioned. This means that unfortunately she is easily taken advantage of. She has had a lot of bad luck when it comes to her love interests. Not one of them seemed to want her, they were just out for what they could get. After her latest horrid ex steals her beloved stuff penguin Trip, she’s finally had enough of doing nothing. She advertises for a henchperson to help get revenge on her unsuspecting exes. Imagine her surprise when the illusive bookstore owner, (who also happens to be very attractive if it wasn’t for her caustic comments) applies and is the only applicant who is qualified for the job. Well, she does own a crime bookstore, that has to count for something.

Olivia and Margaret team up to reap vengeance for all the wrong doings that have been bestowed on Olivia. Yet they soon realise that for capable, intelligent, women, they are very bad at vengeancing. Some of the schemes they come up with are borderline ridiculous (okay some even cross the line, there is a scene with a foldable ladder, that will have you laughing while praying everyone survives).

During all this vengeance planning the pair get closer, discovering things about each other that turn an unlikely partnership into romance. But obviously slow-burn, this is an ice queen book after all. I adored watching these clueless idiots fall in love. Margaret always wants to protect Olivia, that’s why she applied for all this henchpersoning. But she also has a vulnerability, that is unique for an ice queen, and dare I say it, she is actually quirky and very cute. Olivia finds it hard to stand up for herself, she has been trodden on one too many times. Yet when Margaret needs her, she is there to protect her in a dazzling display of bravery and loyalty. It's beautiful.

There are fabulous side characters in this story. The book club members are a funny mismatched bunch, who rarely stay on topic ,and enjoy gossiping more than book discussions. Emma a clever, observant ten-year-old who seems to be the only one who has a clue as to what is happening. Then Winter has given us Olivia's vile exes to boo and hiss at.

The writing as always in a Winter book is exceptional. There is wit, humour, emotions, and swoony declarations. There is also all that plotty goodness that this author excels at and clever subtleties throughout the book left for the reader to find. My absolute favourite is Margaret’s journal/Diary entries. Winter has used these to let the reader see what Dr B is thinking. There are clues and subtle changes as the story unfolds that show where Margaret’s head is and when she changes. It’s brilliant and I’ve re-read them several times already.

Don’t worry, although this is a rom-com Winter still manages to get in a few gut-wrenching moments to still your breath and give you misty eyes.
So, as you can tell I highly recommend this book. It’s 5 stars plus from me and one that I’ll read again and again.

Vengeance Planning For Amateurs is the sixth novel by award-winning Australian author, Lee Winter. Having her heirloom stuffed penguin stolen is the last straw for award-winning Melbourne muffin baker, Olivia Roberts. She decides it’s time to get revenge on her four exes, all guilty of unforgiveable mistreatment, of taking advantage of her generous nature. She puts up a notice in her happy place: Mary Bugg’s Bookstore and Coffee House is where she moderates the Women in Crime Book Club, and where her older sister is barista.

“Wanted: One Henchperson Duties: Assisting in vengeance planning and execution of a revenge bucket list. Payment: Six months’ supply of assorted baked goods from Love Muffins”, the ad says, and it draws several applicants, including a few from her book club, as well as her sister’s persistent ex, and ten-year-old Emma Garrity, a voracious reader who claims a quiet corner of the book store after school for her homework.

One or two applicants misread the ad, but while Davo, a seasoned felon, won’t work for muffins, he does offer a piece of good advice: “Revenge is a science, not a blood sport. Remember that.” Ultimately, it’s Dr Margaret Blackwood, owner of Mary Bugg’s, who convinces Olivia she has the right qualifications to fill the role of henchperson.

Olivia’s plans are, by her own admission, a bit pathetic, but Margaret has some good ideas and, even though “We’d have these great plans, and nothing ever went according to them” the revenge seems to happen almost by accident. Meanwhile, with a little help from their friends, the feelings each has for the other are gradually realised and revealed.

Although Winter stuffs her romcom full of popular Australian culture references, it still somehow seems generic, lacking a genuine Aussie feel and, once the vengeance aspects have been resolved, and the romance established, the story runs out of steam despite a few pages of hot sex, and readers may find themselves skimming towards the end. The bushranger tangent? Ho hum. May appeal to those who enjoy silliness and same sex romcom.
