3 stars. A solid but also predictable good feels book. It's like any other royalty x commoner read. I liked the characters, but I didn't love them. The plot as already mentioned is extremely predictable.

I feel they played too safe with this one. I also didn't see much of Harper's style in this book and I'm not that familiar with the other author.

An OK read to pass some time with minimal angst.

I’m not typically a fan of princess stories, so this alone may influence my review/enjoyment of this book. Just putting it out there. I decided to give this a go because it’s Bliss and I consider myself a Bliss fan. Though I haven’t loved all of her books, I’ve loved most of them (like maybe 90%). I also really like some of Lydon’s stories, so I was ultimately just curious about this mash up.

‘Once Upon A Princess’ was a sweet (almost cavity inducing) story about Princess Olivia (AKA: Charlie) who is unhappily engaged to be married to someone (Jemima) who is ‘perfect for royalty’ but not perfect for Olivia. Theirs is an arranged marriage of convenience. After the announcement of their engagement, Olivia takes off for a few weeks to the quiet and solitude of a quaint town called Otter Bay. Here she meets Rosie, the owner of a cafe that is sucking her dry financially. Charlie and Rosie hang out a bit, they fall in love, stuff happens, drama happens, and then comes an incredibly cheesy happy ending.

I could see much more Clare Lydon in this book than Harper Bliss. I think the only time I clearly saw Bliss was when the phrase ‘arrow of lust’ came up, as it’s clearly a favorite of hers. It’s been in several books I’ve read by her. It’s the sweetness factor that I think is typical Lydon. There was such a lack of angst or a truly deep issue that I couldn’t feel the Bliss vibe. Maybe that’s a good thing? I don’t know. She’s definitely dipped her toe into something different here and sometimes change is good.

I’m not really sure I want to rate this, as the book itself wasn’t really my flavor, as noted earlier. I love a good romance and I have enjoyed/appreciated books by both Lydon and Bliss. This was technically very well written, flowed well, and we have two well defined characters that are impossible not to like. My subjective rating would probably be 3*. If I were to be more objective and rate this book purely on content and for the right audience, I’d give it maybe a 4-4.5*. Because of that, I’m not leaving a star rating.

Olivia Charlton is an out lesbian and the fourth in the line for the British throne. After a long period of service in the army, her mother, the Queen, asks her to settle down and get married. Her parents find a suitable candidate in Jemima Bradbury and all is arranged for an imminent royal (and lesbian) wedding. Olivia decides to take a break under a false name in Cornwall to relax from the commitment stress. In the small town of Otter Bay she meets coffee shop owner Rosie Perkins. Rosie is beautiful, hard working and straightforward. Will Olivia deny her attraction to a commoner and follow the call of duty to marry Jemima?

In my opinion, this book should be read like a fairy tale, maybe not in the strict sense (after all, there are no enchantments or magical creatures) but because some events are a bit far fetched. However, after a moderate suspension of disbelief, 'Once upon a princess' is a very enjoyable read. The slow-burn chemistry between the main characters is spot on and there is a right balance between joy and angst. It has a British feel, not only for the obvious royal theme and English setting, but also in the vocabulary, food and pop culture references which is an asset in the story.

Clare Lydon and Harper Bliss are a perfect match in the world of lesfic. They are both accomplished and talented authors with a - more or less - similar writing style. They both excel at writing well crafted characters, flawless dialogues and hot sex scenes. Hopefully for lesfic fans this won't be their unique collaboration.

Overall, an enjoyable read specially if you are into royalty. 4 stars.

A princess (or should that be Princess?), fourth in line the English (and other) throne, is weeks away from marrying an ex . . . she's been pushed into this position by her mother, the Queen. The, as in the Princess - Olivia, and Jem dated when both were in their twenties, roughly 9 years before the start of this story, but their time had come and gone. They weren't actually in a relationship when the Queen arranged this situation, and that is what this is about - an arranged marriage.

Instead of tackling what an arranged marriage might look like, the book instead follows the princess as she flees to Cornwall, to 'breathe'. I've read pretend/fake/marriages of convenience, but I do not think I've read an arranged marriage book. I've even read books where the two parties are 'compromised' into a 'forced' marriage - but none of those correspond to an arranged marriage (as in, even in the 'forced marriage' something of the marrying people's own will brought them to that position; not all arranged marriage involves parents putting the marriage together, but that's what I was driving towards, since that is what happened here - the mother arranging both Olivia's sister's marriage (to a man named Miles - years before), and Olivia's marriage, or, at this point, engagement to Jem. Because, you see, Jem is 'the right sort').

Right, so, instead of following a relationship between Jem and Olivia, we follow Olivia 'breathing' in Cornwall, a small town there to be exact, something called, if I recall correctly, Otter Bay. Where she meets the other POV character in the story, Rosie Perkins.

Rosie, roughly 28 years of age (or exactly that age?), has run the family cafe for about 8 years now - after her parents died in a plane crash; and has raised her sister during that same period of time. The cafe looks kind of run down, and is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, but Rosie is still trying to keep things together. Helping her is the chef, Gina, who is trying (and failing) to become a citizen, and Rosie's aunt, Hilly (I've actually forgotten the aunt's name, I think it's something like that). At home in her tiny apartment is Paige, the sister about to head off to college, and Cher - yes, the famous singer. heh, no, that's the cat's name. Oh, and, to round this out, Amy, Rosie's ex, keeps popping up and hounding Rosie into taking her back - to restart their relationship (she, Amy, also has a pet, a dog named Biscuit, to really round things out).

So, that's the situation that Olivia finds when she wanders into town, flees an overly aggressive shop-owner (Connie, who wants to sell Olivia a hideous blouse) and into Rosie's cafe. It is not clear if Olivia remembers their earlier collusion, but Rosie and Olivia actually meet before - when Olivia arrived on the same train Paige came in on, and Olivia accidentally walked through Rosie. Rosie recognized her when she sat down - to a large extent because of the fancy expensive jacket.

Right, so, Olivia, wishing to keep people from gazing upon her, taking pictures of her, hounding her, etc., for being a princess, says that her name is Charlie - which is what her fellow military called her (that's another thing the mother controlled, no not being in the military - that Olivia is no longer in it; pulled out when she was 30, three years before the start of this book, because it was time for her to follow her royal duties, or something like that).

Olivia and Rosie flirt. Come close to dating. Actually go on a date. Etc. etc. Then the truth comes out and . . . . stuff.

Sexually explicit.

Interesting book.

Weirdly reminded me of another book I'd read, though that one didn't include a princess, just someone that was kind of posh coming into a small village and 'wooing' the local favored lesbian woman (both books the small village knew the local woman was a lesbian). That other book was set in Wales, though, not Cornwall. And, as already noted, didn't involve a Princess - and that other woman, the posher one, actually was also from that village, she'd just left to make her money in . . . London? before returning. Thought this book here, the Princess one, was better than 'Poppy Jenkins' - though my feeling about the book was something of a minority view.

Once Upon a Princess is a modern fairy tale, wisely published after the British royal wedding. In fact, the dedications says: To Meghan and Harry.

The story is very cute, very well written and the main characters are very likable. But the story is also extremely predictable. Princess Olivia (aka Charlie) goes incognito to Cornwall after announcing her wedding. There she falls in love with the commoner Rosie.

One thing I don't understand. How can princess Olivia hide her identity with a pair of glasses? Seriously? Like Superman?

Anyway, I love this book and I look forward to reading more from Clare Lydon and Harper Bliss.

Every now and then I'll pick up a book that is essentially a modern day fairy tale and be pleasantly surprised by it. This wasn't one of those. Though I read through the book in one sitting, I did so by skimming every now and then because the story was very predictable.

Unfortunately I also didn't really feel a lot of chemistry between Rosie and Olivia/Charlie. They just didn't seem to make any kind of impact on me as characters to even be very memorable. Overall for me this was just an average read on every level. I wonder if the writers just got caught up in the whole royal wedding fever? Either way i'm glad both the wedding and book are over. NEXT!

This book was ok. I was looking forward to reading it but it stalled for me midway through. I wasn’t feeling the connection. I put it down for a bit before I finished it, which probably didn’t help. Oh well, others have given it 4* or more so your mileage may vary.
BTW - it’s a relatively small village. Wouldn’t they notice someone was visiting the manor, especially since it had been closed for awhile?

Princess Olivia just announced her engagement to a women she doesn't love or particularly like, so to get her head straight she decides to spend a few weeks at her estate in Cornwall. What she didn't expect was to fall in love with the local owner of a struggling cafe down the street.

I've discovered that I really enjoy the royalty romance, I didn't understand how all these straight girls can read book after book about a commoner falling in love with a royal but all it took was changing a few pronouns and here I am, a big fan! 'The Princess Affair' and 'The Princess and the Prix' by Nell Stark are excellent and I also listened to the audiobook of 'Her Royal Highness' by Rachel Hawkins and damn if it wasn't endearing.

'Once Upon a Princess' doesn't disappoint either, we have a 30 something princess who now finds herself being ordered to marry and has chosen with the encouragement of her mother, a former lover who is of adequate breeding according to her royal parents. I enjoyed her journey, her backstory and overall character arc, it's hard to relate obviously but you can easily see why she struggles and falling in love makes it even more complicated for her.

Rosie is selfless and kind who hasn’t done much for herself since dropping out of university 8 years prior after her parents died so she could move back home and take care of her sister. Now she is swept of her feet by this random Londoner who one day walks into her Café and introduces herself as Charlie, and by the end of the book has been thoroughly bamboozled, hell of a good ride, read the book.

I bought the conflict and didn't feel like the characters were making stupid decisions left and right although there is a scene where honestly the truth should have come out but you gotta have some drama, it's a lesfic.

We have a terrible controlling mother, terrible ex times TWO, an Argentinian cook and a royal wedding, given to us by lesfic veteran Harper Bliss and Clare Lydon. Well done!

What will Charlie (Olivia) do!?!

unfortunately this one is the first DNF of 2020 for me... I gave up at 20%, not because the book was bad or problematic, it was just too much of a "meh" and "blah" for me... the writing style was ok, not great... I didn't really connect with either of the main characters and there was way too much telling instead of showing, for example, how Olivia was spending time in Rosie's cafe meeting other people and sort of bonding with her, but we never really saw that happening... and I decided I don't want to waste more of my time finishing a book that just doesn't interest me... again, it's a shame, cause I was really looking forward to reading a romance about two women :/ I am definitely gonna keep looking for one that I will love ;)

XOXO

YAY Royal Love!!

Princess Olivia is an out lesbian and second in line for the throne. Since she has because she is a woman of a certain age, her mother has decided that it is time for Olivia to be married. To make matters simple, the Queen has already picked out the woman she will marry, her ex Jemima. Jemima has the perfect pedigree and even though Olivia does not love her nor does she want to marry her, it is a done deal. Begging time to get her head together she runs off to the small town of Otter Bay where she meets the delightful and lovely Rosie….

Olivia is a free spirit trapped by the constraints of being a royal. She has the world’s eyes on her and her mother never lets her forget it. As much as she hates her obligations, she is reluctantly willing to do right by them. She is beautiful, smart and strong and I will admit I fell a little in love with her.

Rosie has her own obligations to meet. She is raising her sister on her own as her parents have died. She will soon be sending her sister off to university. Rosie runs her late parent’s restaurant to make ends meet but it is a struggle. She is tough, dedicated and lonely. She is also pretty adorable. She is sweet and cheerful, always trying to stay upbeat, and loyal. There is a lot to admire about Rosie. You will not be able to resist their pull and will hope most passionately that they will come together as a couple and give us the Happily Ever After we so desire.

There were definite clues that this is a Harper Bliss book but I noticed a difference as well. I’m thinking that this is Ms. Lydon’s touch. I have never read anything by her before but after reading this I will be sure to read some of her other books!!

Very timely story, smart move 😉

Of the handful of books I’ve read in this teeny lesfic subgenre of princess novels, this is my favorite. Yes, it’s cheesy, yes, it’s playing with cliches, but I didn’t care.

It had a bit of a Poppy Jenkins feel, not sure if it was just the cafe/countryside vibe or something else as well.

I‘ve never read anything by Lydon, I might now.

Added: didn’t hold up quite as well in reread.

I don't read nearly enough lesbian fiction at I would like, and I was very excited when I found this. It definitely lived up to my expectations and I found it such cuteness overload and feel good goodness. Definitely interested in reading more from these authors for sure. O hope the got more lesbian fiction to offer

I absolutely loved this book! I have to admit I love princess stories that have lesbian characters. It was a little drawn out with the “hiding” part and I wish she would have told her sooner but that is just minor.

I just wanted a light cosy romance to feel fluffy about, and this fit the bill nicely.

Although there was still some light drama enough to keep up interest.

I enjoyed the story of an out lesbian Princess named Olivia (disguising herself as Charlie) falling for the 'common' orphan unsuspecting cafe owner, Rosie.

A light romance with a royal touch. The characters are likable enough, with Princess Olivia escaping from London and her arranged engagement. Rosie is running her late parents' financially failing cafe, while worrying about her younger sister's upcoming university expenditures. The storyline is a bit predictable. The ending a bit too convenient. However, I did like the book. It's a nice read to de-stress during a busy work week.

I loved this book. I think this is one of my favorite princess stories so far. The fact that Clare Lydon wrote it might have something to do with that. At first I didn't realise that Harper Bliss co-wrote this with her but that only makes the book better, in my opinion.

I loved the dynamic between Olivia and Rosie and liked the side characters as well. The story was a bit predictable sometimes but overall that didn't really bother me.

For me this book was hard to put down but at the same time I didn't want to finish it because that meant the story was over. I would give it 4,5 stars which rounds up to a solid 5.

I was a little sceptical of the storyline of this book but with two of my favourite LF author's co writing I had to check it out... and I'm so pleased I did. The story sucked me in right away and immediately I was a fan of charlie/Olivia. Rosie was a Fab small town girl who put family loyalties first and wouldn't take off of anyone. This follows your typical Rom com style with the meeting, falling in love, the break up and then the reconnect and you could see where it was going from the start, but isn't that what we all look for in a light hearted summer romantic read.

I give this story three stars because four would be too lean a gap to five stars considering how rarely I [want to give] five-stars ratings. Also, this story was royally (oh, yes, I did) a story of U-Hauling. Furthermore, I not a fan of cheating even if your engagement is in pomp and circumstance only. Too much cake and eating it, too for Princess Charlie-Olivia. I did appreciate the chapters containing adjustment details post the entirely-too-soon engagement. Not including those would have been entirely too “happily ever after” even for a story like this. I pictured Princess Alexandra like a young Princess Margaret in spite of her being older in this story, and was torn between feeling a mild crush and an adoration for how much the compassionate big sister she was. All in all, a sweet long weekend read that won’t involve any complex emotions which is what I needed.

Rosie is running a local run down inherited Cafe on the Cornish Coast and Olivia/Charlie is running from a royal life she doesn’t want but was born into and they literally run into each other and so the story begins.

This book is wonderfully written by two of the best Lesfic authors out there, Clare Lydon and Harper Bliss who joined forces and both authors brought their best qualities to this story. The humour, it’s funny, the angst, yes I shed a tear and of course the romance, heartfelt and it sizzles, this whole story is so good, I loved it from the beginning and I was left with a good feeling and a smile at the end.

I just love every word of this story because it brought out so many emotions for me. I never knew there were so many rules that came with being in a royal family and this story is definitely an eye opener because many people envy them but they don't know the personal toll it can take on each individual in a royal family. There are not enough words that I could use to express my deep affection for Olivia and Rosie. These resilient and tender-hearted women seemed like dear friends to me because I could empathize with the predicament both women were in and I must say that this story is touching and thought provoking as well. After I read this story I got a serious case of wanderlust because I really love the vivid descriptions of this beautiful landscape! This story will make you ask yourself if you are really living your life or are you just existing until the day you die.

Every princess deserves her own happily ever after…

Once upon a time (sorry, couldn’t resist) there lived an out lesbian princess named Olivia. She wants to marry for love but it’s complicated when the Queen presents her with a good match, royally speaking. Honor and duty has been drummed in Olivia and when the pressure of her life gets unbearable, she escapes to the Cornish coast in disguise. She meets and falls in love with café owner Rosie. Olivia keeps her true identity a secret from Rosie but when all is revealed, she may lose the one woman she’s ever loved. Can these two overcome the odds and grab ahold of a happily ever after or is it all a dream?

I’m a big royal romance fan and I picked this up for a British feel-good romance. I loved both Olivia/Charlie and Rosie. They’re well-drawn characters with depth which made this more than a fluff piece. The conflicts are honest and believable. The Queen, while lovely to see open to her daughter’s sexual preference, is detestable in her classism views. A clear antagonist to both Olivia and Rosie. The plot ran at a good pace, filled with plenty of drama and romance. I was sad when it ended and wanted more.

If you’re a romance fan and looking for a new spin on a modern fairy tale, pick up Once Upon a Princess.
