MARY LEUNIG'S SECOND COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS, FOLLOWING 'NO PLACE LIKE HOME' WAS A RUNAWAY SUCCESS. THERE ARE LEGIONS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE JUST WAITING TO BE AMUSED, BEMUSED, SHOCKED, ENLIGHTENED AND TO FALL ABOUT GROANING WHILE CRYING WITH LAUGHTER OVER MARY'S NEW COLLECTION. AND DON'T THINK THEY'RE ALL MEN - PETER CAREY'S ONE OF HER GREATEST FANS (HOPEFULLY PETER IS GOING TO WRITE A QUOTE FOR US TO USE ON THE BACK COVER).
There I was, thinking that Fay Weldon, Margaret Atwood and Alison Bechdel were telling it like it is, and now I see that they were just toning it down so as not to upset the men. If disquieting feminist cartoons are your thing, rush out and buy this collection immediately. There are some truly unforgettable images.
It's a great shame that this Leunig stopped creating for public display. I wonder if it is because her work is unrelentingly dark and sad without any of the moments of relief that temper her brother's work. To put that another way, did she stop because she wanted to or because we needed her to?
(For people who aren't sure what's going on: a collection of (cartoon) drawings, focusing mostly on women but other matters as well. Not a word of explanation, so be sure to turn on your brains.)
