I can honestly say that I felt compelled to write The Rebels. I took a risk on writing it and it turned out to be a complete game-changer for me. When I began writing, nearly six years ago, I honestly wasn't sure what I was "meant" to write. I just knew that if I didn't take a pen to paper immediately I was going to die, haha. I wondered for years where my purpose in writing was until I dreamed up the idea of The Rebels. I hadn't taken on a project like The Rebels before so I kind of tried to ignore it at first, but it wouldn't leave me alone. It was seriously driving me crazy. So, I decided to take the risk and write what I was meant to write. I can honestly say, it opened my eyes to a whole new world and I love every piece of it.
Temper begins life rather timidly, beaten down, so stuck without a voice like many of us are. Every now and then, her true personality begins to shine through, until she grasps her purpose, her courage, and embraces herself and her world.
Voss is a man of extreme honor. He has such a great love for his country that he is more than willing to lay down his life for it. Being a military wife, I know a few men (and women!) with similar characteristics. Voss finds himself in a dilemma when he has to decide how to serve his country best, which unfortunately requires him to do the unthinkable in the "military world."
Wesley... Oh, how can I describe Wesley? To be honest, he wasn't supposed to play as big of a role as what he did. To my own amusement, Wes just wouldn't shut up. I don't know why I ever expected any less of him anyway. There isn't much to be said about Wesley that he doesn't say for himself. We all need some fun, even when everyone is afraid, worried, hungry, cold, tired and oppressed, and Wes will take his fun wherever he can get it.
Daddy and Mama are fire and ice. Hot and cold. Dark and light. Opposites truly attract when it comes to them. Daddy can be harsh sometimes but that's what I love about him. He's a southern man to the core, always afraid of showing too much emotion. Mama, on the other hand, is as full of love and faith as she can be.
Shawn and Allison have a special place in my heart. It's been hard as a military wife to find true friends. We move around so often and lose touch with our loved ones. Temper, who felt very out-of-place in her own life, needed good friends like Shawn and Allison. I've met a few military families who I can truly say I'll never, ever forget. I love them to pieces.
...then there's Sutton, our black wolf. He's dangerous in more ways than one and if I ever write a sequel to The Rebels, you'll see much more of him.
I hope everyone who reads The Rebels understands how much love and pain I poured into it. It wasn't easy to write. There's nowhere in the world like the United States of America. We have the potential to be the happiest country there is and I believe we once were. I don't want to see our nation destroyed... I want to see it renewed, revived, improved. And the military? Well, I'm part of that honorable life. What I want everyone to understand with The Rebels is that many times, our military forces are stuck in the middle. Our military heroes see first hand how our country is failing itself yet all they can do about it is follow the orders given. It's time to be strong and reclaim our country. We were never meant to be passive little worker-ants for our congress to order around. We're supposed to have a voice! The longer we just sit around and follow the orders given to us by the "leaders" of our country, the more oppressed we're bound to become. How can the president even relate to "his" citizens? He makes $400,000 a year, not to mention his extra expense accounts, a free mansion to live in, etc... How can he possibly relate to men and women who work two or three jobs just to survive and feed their family? How can he relate to the struggling college student, or the average military family who GOES WITHOUT? How can our congressmen, who also make close to $200,000 per year, truly represent US? They can't. Furthermore, they won't, and they simply don't want to. It's our job to struggle and suffer so they can thrive. The sad thing is, they think we're too dumb to realize it. What can we do about it, anyway? Well, we should figure that out together. Stand strong, guys. Hope you all enjoyed The Rebels!
