Fleeing the clutches of Robespierre’s revolutionary Tribunal in France, Lili Minet makes a desperate escape on a ship headed to England, but her dangerous flight takes an unexpected turn when a violent storm catapults her off the ship and eighty years into the future, leaving her stranded in the unfamiliar world of 1873 England. When lighthouse keeper Armitage Pierce rescues a woman from the tumultuous sea, he does not anticipate her silent, cold response to his gallant efforts. Though he is wary of this woman and her odd behaviors, he finds she is just as wary of him. And he can sense that she is not telling him something of great import to her. Only Armitage’s grandfather, a man seasoned by the mysteries of the sea, can seem to penetrate Lili’s defenses to offer her support. But as Lili heals from the physical and emotional wounds of her ordeal and Armitage continues to offer light and safety to her, a tender friendship blossoms between the two. Yet the shadow of danger looms as the threat that chased Lili from France all those years ago reemerges in her new present. Together Lili and Armitage must navigate the challenges of a love that defies the boundaries of time and the perils that reach across the decades to ensnare Lili. As the storm clouds gather, Lili and Armitage face the ultimate test—whether their bond is strong enough to rewrite the pages of history itself to save them and their love.
The cover initially drew me in and then once I learned the premise, I just had to read it. I am so happy I purchased my own physical copy because I enjoyed it so much!
I don't think that I've ever read a time travel book where someone from the past travels forward in time but its still the distance to the past for the reader. It was fascinating reading the FMC's discoveries of the the at that time modernities- her reaction to the train especially!
I really enjoyed everything about this story except for how many times the reader was told the FMC saved 76 people from the guillotine--that was pretty aggravating to me actually, a few times is fine but over 10 times is excessive.
I enjoyed the characters, how the time travel worked, the descriptions of the time periods, and the promise of future stories with the tides of time.
There are so many things that I want to say in my review but then I start thinking about each thing and second guessing myself because I don't want to spoil anything for you! Nope. Because you have to experience this book yourself! Hence my "Just Read It!!! The End!" comment. Hahaha! But that is accurate because I want to you pause what you're doing and read this book now! I need people to talk to about it. Oh the struggle of reading an early copy, really early and waiting patiently to talk about all of the twists and turns and THAT ENDING!!!! Oh my word!!! Sarah M. Eden, fabulous job on this amazing time-slip novel! I was hooked. You can write time-slip novels anytime you want to. I'm here for them all!!! Just sayin'!
I loved it all! I'm soooo beyond happy knowing there is a second book coming because I need answers. It's not a cliffhanger per se but definitely leaves it open for plenty more goodness to come.
I had some inklings and guesses that I really hoped would be the case and I loved seeing what the outcome was for it all. Some I was correct on and others were fun surprises!
It's a beautiful story of family, love, healing, sorrow, friendship, falling in love, and much, much more! Seriously, mark your calendars and just read it as soon as you can!
Content: Clean. The book is written with nothing more than a few kisses but it does deal with the French Revolution/the Reign of Terror and death and loss. But the author did a wonderful job portraying that without making it graphic. I'd happily have my teenagers read this.
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Fleeing revolutionary France, Lilli makes her escape to England only to be caught in a dangerous storm that sends her 80 years in the future.
Armitage Pierce rescues a woman from the water near the lighthouse where he is a keeper but her strange behavior makes him suspicious - who is she? How did she end up in the water? As the two spend time together as Lilli heals, a friendship grows between them that changes into something much more, but dangers from the past threaten their hope of a future together.
What you'll love: time-slip dual pov swoony romance
It is hard to find all the words to tell you just how AMAZING this book is! At the same time, I don't want to spoil anything so I am keeping my list extra short because you need to go into this one with only the minimal information!
This book is storytelling at it's finest and I was completely hooked from the first page. The adventure, the suspense, the heartwarming family relationships, and oh my word, Armitage and Lilli!! (insert all the crying and melty emojis here). Talk about an epic love for the ages! And all of the twists and turns and surprises - I lost count of how many times my jaw dropped or I gasped out loud.
This breathtaking journey through time is one incredible ride and I loved every single minute of it! 10/10, would absolutely go on this adventure again. I am still living in a book hangover from it four days after finishing but I don't even care! An absolute must read, my friends, and this will undoubtedly be one of my favorite releases of 2025. DO NOT miss this one!!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
It's been a while since a book has made me really cry, but The Tides of Time completely wrecked me in the best possible way. This story was an absolute gem, and I can't get over how beautiful it was. From the heartfelt romance to the unforgettable characters, I felt like I lived every moment with them.
Lili, in particular, is such a fantastic heroine—strong, compassionate, and so wonderfully real. And Armitage? His loyalty and devotion to Lili were just swoon-worthy. I found myself utterly captivated by their connection, and honestly, I just need more of their story. Where's the next book, please?!
If I had to pick a teeny-tiny complaint, it would be the dialogue. Armitage has a very distinct way of speaking that initially felt a little distracting. Over time, though, I found myself adjusting and just rolling with it. But the French? Oh boy. If only I'd had the ebook version to quickly whip out Google Translate! There were several moments where I was left guessing what people were saying, and I definitely missed the full richness of those interactions.
The time travel aspect? Brilliant! It added such a thrilling layer to the story, and the second half was intense. I couldn't stop turning pages, desperate to know what would happen next. The suspense was real, and I was on the edge of my seat until the very last word.
In short, The Tides of Time was a beautiful, emotional, and gripping read. If you're a fan of historical romance, time travel, and characters you can’t help but fall in love with, this book is absolutely for you.
This was such a fun story! Lili lives in 1793 France but gets transferred to 1873 England after falling into the sea. There she meets Armitage who is a lighthouse keeper. I loved watching Lili not know what things are and having to learn them. One thing like seeing a train, terrified her and I can understand that. I liked that even though Armitage didn’t know why Lili acted peculiar he still wanted to help her. I also liked that his Grandfather did know and was there for her. It’s hard to write a review on this story without spoilers so I will just say I really enjoyed this story and found the historical events really interesting. Overall a great book and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
2.5⭐️ this wasn’t my favorite nothing really stuck out to me, but it was still good. it was kinda interesting the history part because the stuff going on in the book was what i was just learning about at school. i loved the idea that love defies time itself like that was just such a beautiful concept. also some of the parts in this book were so corny i was cringing so bad and i know she was french but honestly i just thought it was confusing the french to english even tho i know some french
。၄၃ characters ၄၃ 。
_lili: eh she was kinda weird she wasn’t my favorite main character tbh
_armitage: okay lowk how did the romance start bc it was just like one second they weren’t tgth and next thing you know they are
_the grandfather: he was my favorite character he was so sweet
_géraud: he’s such a butt head i was so ready for the siblings to make up and for him to be nice but nooo that couldn’t happen
~favorite quotes~
“”My heart is smiling, too, and that is a very new experience for me.”” {page 148}
“But he wasn't that Géraud any longer. She knew he wasn't. Why, then, did she keep trying to find the brother she’d lost? And why did she keep letting him hurt her?” {page 209} ->i feel like this is so relatable with so many people bc its like you keep letting them in just for them to hurt you two seconds later
This story was super wholesome and the idea was beyond intriguing. I love a good time travel romance. However, these characters felt a little flat to me because they felt as though they had no arcs and were naturally perfect. Except when they disliked each other at the beginning that went away super magically. The plot wasn’t really existent except for the beginning and the end, but the middle was literally “we exist in this lighthouse,” so while very adorable, and an interesting concept I wished for a little bit more.
🌊 Release Date: March 4, 2025 🌊 . . . This was such an intriguing take on time travel! To be honest, I was a bit hesitant going into this book because I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Thankfully, true to form with Sarah M. Eden, this book was an absolute delight! The characters felt true to life and quickly pulled me into their fascinating story.
Lili Minet lived a life of constant fear, on the run from the Tribunal in France, as she worked to save the lives of others in danger of facing the guillotine. When one such excursion goes awry, Lili’s ends up thrown into the ocean in the midst of a raging storm in 1793 and is saved by a kindly lighthouse keeper, Armitage, in the calmer waters of England in 1873. As is to be expected, Lili’s life is completely thrown off its axis as she works to navigate this strange life in a new century. She begins to finally learn to depend on others, rather than just relying on herself, and discovers the beauty of love along the way.
Armitage was unsure of what to think of this strange woman he’d pulled from the ocean. She seemed to be hiding things from him, but the language barrier made it difficult to communicate, much less discover her secrets. Soon a tentative friendship formed between Lili and Armitage as she brought light into the lives of both him and his grandfather. But when an unexpected “guest” showed up, all of their lives were once again thrown into a jumble. Will they be able to overcome all odds and finally find a love that transcends time and danger?
I loved the story that this book told! It was so beautiful and filled my heart to overflowing ♥️ The “language” of that time did take me a bit to get used to, but once that was out of the way, the story flowed well. It was a lovely tale depicting the healing process of past hurts, the beautiful journey of discovering true love, and a riveting adventure spanning the tides of time! . . . I received a complimentary arc from NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing. All opinions listed are purely my own.
The Tides of Time is instantly immersive adventure that will take you back in time to the wicked heart of the French Revolution all the way to the shores of late 1800's England.
This book started and ended with a bang, but the middle is a tale of rescue and safety in the form of a small town where our main character Lili finally gets to breathe for the first time in years. Its utterly sweet and charming and I loved watching the two main characters slowly fall in love. I also loved the elderly grandfather character who provided wisdom and comfort to characters who needed it.
I also really appreciated the time given to create historical accurate time period portrayals that immersed me in the different time periods. I loved how the sea lore was easy to grasp and smoothly transported characters to where they needed to be. There were also some fun unexpected twists that really were quite clever.
Lili was a fierce heroine and I found her to be so easy to love and enjoy. Armitage was so sweet and kind, and I love that the skepticism of her arrival was short lived. I am so glad this will be a series because I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. This is a wonderful, darling and daring tale that I recommend to all sweet historical romance fanatics!
Oh my goodness! Such a good time slip romance. The way that things are described from someone out of the era is brilliant. And all the emotions are there: confusion, fear, suspicion, anger, love. So many things to love about this book but it's better going in blind so just trust me.
'Lili firmed her spine and her resolve. She was not easily felled. There were two explanations for what she was seeing: either someone had gone to great lengths to deceive her, or she was no longer in 1793. Why someone would undertake the former, she couldn't begin to guess. Yet the latter was impossible. Utterly and completely impossible.'
One of my favorite things about the time slip genre is the impossibility of it becoming possible through the pages. It's intriguing and really adds something new to my regular reads. This is Sarah M. Eden's first time publishing a time slip novel, and I hope she doesn't stop! I was completely captivated, and it held my attention from start to finish. There is suspense, danger, high stakes at every turn, adorable found family elements, and a romance of rivals/enemies-to-more that will make you swoon for days!
I found the historical aspect fascinating, and Sarah captured it in a way that truly brought history to life. Every detail enriched the story, making it even more immersive, and I always appreciate deeper dives into historical time periods.
I fell in love with all the characters—especially the grandpa! He was adorable, and I would love to see more of him. I loved how everything came together by the end, and let me tell you… THIS IS A MUST-READ BOOK! YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Trigger Warnings: French Revolution, talk of the guillotine, mild violence, death of loved ones, romance (kisses only)
I am convinced that Sarah Eden can do no wrong. Her books are always top notch, and The Tides of Time is no exception. This book has everything you could want in a book - amazing historical detail, a courageous leading lady, a kind hearted hero, a villain you just want to give a facer (or fifty), an awesome cast of supporting characters, a dose of mystery, plot twists you didn't see coming, slipping through time, the sweetest romance....what is there not to love here?!
Lili and Armitage are seriously the cutest couple. They were so perfect for each other. There were times I wasn't sure how everything could possibly work out for them, but it all came together in the most satisfying way! I was so excited for them to get their happily ever after.
If this book isn't on your TBR lists already, it needs to be. Trust me, friends. This is one book you don't want to miss. And lucky for y'all, you don't even have to wait that long to get you a copy because it release on Tuesday 🥳
Many thanks to the publisher for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.
Big Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy!!
''The Tides of Time'' is the first time travel series that incorporates history with a romantic story full of fantastical elements.
First of all, the author does a great job of creating the perfect atmosphere for the story in addition to the endearing characters. Also, the historical element was well interweaved with the story and learning more about that period was interesting.
On the other hand, the pacing of the story was off. The book probably needed a hundred or so more pages as to the plot to have some breathing space, especially in the final chapters, when everything happened way too quickly. Moreover, the love story suffered from that lack of more pages and it felt forced at some points. But, there was chemistry and they were both really sweet.
Another final note should be made on Lili's ability to speak English, which got pretty elaborate at times, but was quite elementary in others.
If I could give this book 10 stars, I absolutely would!! Oh my gosh, I was completely captivated by this story. From the very beginning, I could not put this book down. Lili’s life in Paris is absolutely scary, and crazy, and then it just gets crazier from there. Armitage enters the story, and it just gets oh so good. They are destined for each other and I am obsessed with them and their love story. Their adventures are insane and difficult, and will not allow you to ever put the book down.
So clear your schedule, because this book is about to take over. My only wish is that we had a little more of them in the end, I wasn’t quite ready to end their story. I wish I knew just a little bit more about their HEA. I neeeeed more Sarah 😉
Enjoy my friends!!
Thanks to the author for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
The idea of a time travel novel set between the French Revolution and Victorian England is fantastic. The historical elements and portrayal of the era were what I liked most in The Tides of Time. Unfortunately, I found the concept of the book more appealing than its execution. First of all, the story itself isn’t bad, but the pacing is uneven—the middle drags quite a bit, and by the end, everything happens very quickly, within just a few pages. Secondly, I feel the magic system and the rules of time travel aren’t explained thoroughly enough. Thirdly, the romance isn't very convincing. I felt that Lili had more chemistry with other characters (they were not by any means love interests) than with Armitage. The love story between them seemed more like a plot device than a genuinely developed relationship. It was hard for me to get emotionally invested in it. Still, it was a quick read, and I enjoyed it. It wouldn't be my first choice for a time travel romance, but it's not the worst book either.
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This read has left me speechless. I have been thinking about it since finishing it and will continue to do so for a long while yet.
Is it possible to give a read more than 5 stars? If so, I give this story all the stars possible!
This is the best blend of high stakes historical setting, local legends, and a love story for the ages!
Armitage quickly became one of my favorites! Once he got over his initial shock, he was someone I would deem worthy for my daughter.
Lili was the best blend of fierce protector, strong woman, and taking little steps to accomplish incredible feats. She is absolutely one worth remembering.
I listened to this amazing book, read by Mary Jane Wells, and the voices made me fall even more in love with it! Truly. Both my inner and outer monologues gained a French accent. 🇫🇷
Read this book if you like: ⚡️ 1790s France ⚡️ The Revolution ⚡️ Freeing the Innocent ⚡️ Lighthouses ⚡️ Small Island Villages ⚡️ Adopted Mothers ⚡️ Shawls ⚡️ Matches ⚡️ Green Lightning ⚡️ Local Legends
Content: strained family relationships, grief, Madame Le Guillotine, romance- kisses only.
3.5 stars, rounded down. This book had an intriguing premise and was well-written. I thought the folklore about the "tides of time" was fun, but I wished it had been explained more thoroughly.
I felt that the pacing of the story was a bit uneven, and the ending felt abrupt. It seems the author intends to write more books in this series, which makes some sense. However, it felt like a lot occurred in the beginning, then not much happened in the middle, and then everything unfolded rapidly at the end. I believe the pacing would be better if the middle was shorter and the buildup to the climax was extended, with more resolution at the end. (But then again, Sarah M. Eden has published over 70 novels, while I haven't published any, so what do I know? Haha.)
I wasn't completely convinced that Lili's character could muster the courage to rescue so many people during the French Revolution. While I could see her motivated by compassion, I didn't think she demonstrated enough gumption and bravery throughout the story. It might have been helpful to develop her character more in her own time before she time-traveled to the future, where she was more lost and confused.
The audiobook narrator did a phenomenal job. She did a French accent beautifully and also did a convincing male British accent for the men in the story. Very well done.
Overall, this book was fine. I would recommend it if you enjoy clean historical romances and are looking for something a bit different from the usual mold.
SO GOOD. If you like any of the following, you probably should read this book: Scarlet Pimpernel exploits, timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly Doctor Who shenanigans, sweet but not cloying romance, found family, or Poldark (it’s not Cornwall but I was still getting vibes!).
(Textual note: Characters speak with some grammatical idiosyncrasies that could be jarring if you’re not familiar with them. Swapping around “she” and “her”, “us and we,” etc. But it’s accurate for the time and is also explained in-story.)
I am a loyal fan of Eden's work, have read everything she has written, and have enjoyed reading each of them, so it pains me to say that I did not like this book. The storyline is convoluted, the writing is repetitive, and it relies too heavily on exposition to get her point across. I didn't connect with or love any of the characters who are continually contradicting themselves. Also, the end of the book doesn't even finish the story but leaves it open to continue into the next book in the series.
First sentence: Lili Minet had a price on her head. She stood in the shadows inside Saint Catherine's Church alongside a family she'd known for only a few days, hopeful that the reward for her capture would increase before the day's end. As far as she knew, no one had facilitated the escape of more people from the clutches of the Tribunal revolutionnaire than she. Four more individuals would, that evening, be added to the seventy-two already rightly credited to her.
Premise/plot: The Tides of Time is a TIME TRAVEL ROMANCE. Those three words may be enough of a hook for some readers. (It was for me). Lili Minet, our heroine, is on the run for her life in 1793 during the French Revolution. She's been helping people escape, but, her luck may have just run out. One of those searching desperately for her--for her harm--is her brother who is in full support of the revolution and the guillotine. When stormy seas lead to her being tossed overboard, she finds herself rescued by a lightkeeper, Armitage Pierce, off the coast of Loftstone Island....in 1873. As the weeks go by she adjusts to the strangeness of her situation. She loves Armitage and his grandfather. She loves the community on the island. She loves her new found-family. She can't quite forget her own brother--for good reason--nor the France she left behind. The Tides of Time can be cruel or kind--or both.
My thoughts: I LOVE this one. I do. Time travel is going to always have great potential for me. This publisher is known for clean romance, another win for me.
There are TWO things that might be off-putting to potential readers. (They weren't at all for me.) One, Lili speaks a mixture of English and French. There is a strong sprinkling of French phrases and sentences. It makes sense for the story. She is a French woman--obviously French is going to be her primary language, her first language, the language that she would speak especially when stressed or out of sorts. Two, the DIALECT of the island could be offputting. "She/her" "He/Him" "We/Us" essentially all the pronouns have vastly different usage. For example, "Her isn't hostile to me." "A calculated decision, that. I watched she make it."
This book is so compelling and so beautiful! I was completely captivated from beginning to end. This story took me on the most fantastic adventure through time with characters I fell in love with!! The time travel woven through out was just so brilliant and intriguing!!!! It had me gasping out loud as my heart raced to see what would happen next!!!!
Lili and Armitage hold a special place in my heart! I loved their sweet and tender slow burn romance that transcended time itself! Both are such lovable characters that will stick with me for a long time! Their love is inspiring and moving!
It was incredible traveling through the streets of France during the French Revolution and also feeling apart of the small village of Loftstone Island in Victorian England. I felt like I was there in each of these places! Sarah’s beautiful storytelling made this story really come alive!
What to expect: 🌊Unique Hampshire accent(that takes a bit to get used to) 🌊Lots of French dialogue 🌊A slow burn love story for the ages 🌊Endearing characters 🌊Heart racing moments 🌊The lighthouse 🌊Traveling through time! 🌊Beautiful storytelling
This book is fascinating, touching, brilliant, beautiful, romantic, unique, incredibly intriguing, heart racing and addicting. I loved every single second of this story!!! Time travel romance has become a new favorite genre thanks to this lovely book. It is truly wonderful! . . . Thank you to the author and @shadowmountainpub for the arc copy. All opinions are my own.
Content: French Revolution danger, violence and social unrest, guillotine mentioned, death of loved ones in the past, grief, kisses only
If you love time travel romances, you will definitely want to read ‘The Tides of Time’ by Sarah M. Eden. This is my second book by her and I have fallen in love with her storytelling. Usually when I read a time travel romance either the main character has gone back in history from our modern times, or she/he has gone from historical times to our modern times. I absolutely love that both time periods in this book are historical. It just shows how quickly our world changes and how jarring it would be to jump from one time to another. The romance in this was done beautifully. Armitage was weary of Lili at first, but his protective nature quickly took over. Their friendship bloomed into a sweet romance. He would do anything to protect her. I loved all the villagers in this book and how much they loved Armitage and came to love Lili. Read this if you love historical time travel romances full of adventure, found family, a little bit of suspense, a brave and selfless MFC, and a protective MMC. This book will make you feel all the emotions!
*I was sent a complimentary copy with no expectations for a favorable review.
This audio book is amazing! Best reader I’ve ever listened to. This is a sweet love story with some unique twist and turns. This is not a book I would normally pick up but I’m sure glad I did!
"I won't disrupt your work," she said. "I only wanted to see you." "Missed me, did you?" The question held more than a note of flirtation. Feeling a little mischievous herself, she said, "I assumed you missed me." "I've most certainly missed you, darling."
The Tides of Time by Sarah M Eden
This one has left me utterly and completely speechless. The Tides of Time took me completely by surprise! I had no idea what I was getting myself into, other than it has romance, a ship and lighthouse, and it is a time slip. And I LOVED every second of it! You should have heard me as I was immersive reading with the audio. My husband can confirm that I was gasping, and yelling NO! and sniffling/crying as I was reading it. Sarah truly wrote something remarkable here. This one was fresh, immensely entertaining, and a definite new favorite of mine. She has such a remarkable talent for writing stories that capture your heart, your soul, and your whole being. She does not skimp on the research she does for her writing, and it definitely shone through in this one. I felt like I was in the water with them, in the lighthouse’s kitchen with Lili, and walking along the cobblestone streets of the small village nearby. This book had me wanting to learn French, visit the English coast, and reading every book about the French Revolution I could get my hands on.
I was fully captivated by Lili's and Armitage's story. The immense bravery Lili demonstrated was exquisite! I loved her character; her strength, her fortitude, her wits, but also her desire to be feminine and a lady still. I loved Armitage's character as well. He is so selfless, kind, and thoughtful. He shows bravery as well. These two are adorable and make an excellent team! His grandpere was probably one of my most favorite characters of all! He is just so sweet! I love his and Armitage's transformations throughout the book as well.
The political intrigue and the intense moments were astounding and kept me predicting (sometimes my predictions were correct, and other times not so much), and on the edge of my seat. There were so many great plot twists. I do think the ending was a tad rushed and I hope for a bonus epilogue.
Audio Review: I read the first 100 pages, and then switched to the audio on release day, and let me tell you, YOU need the audio for this. The French and French accents, and then also how she switches the dialect so seamlessly. Bravo!
My only real complaint is, geesh, book 2 release is SO FAR AWAY! I could not be more excited for the arrival of book 2!

Thank you to the author and publisher for the review copy. All thoughts are my own.
Sarah M. Eden used to be one of my favourite authors, and I always take immense pleasure in re-reading her Jonquil Brother Series and the Lancaster family series. However, I'm less of a fan of her recent books, and to me, this one was a disappointment.
The cover is absolutely stunning and the summary terribly appealing, so I couldn't resist asking for an eARC to review on Netgalley. However, from the first few chapters, I found the concept of the book more appealing than its execution.
I found the main character, Lili, annoying and unlovable. After being rescued from drowning, she is downright rude and disrespectful to her British rescuer, Armitage, for no reason other than "she cannot trust him because it's the Revolution back in France", which doesn't really make sense. If we could see and sense her vulnerability and understand why she is lashing out at Armitage, that would be fine, but you don't see that part of her. And Lili is amiable to Armitage's grandfather, when she should be just as wary of him.
In addition, she pretends to speak bad English in a way that is very confusing. She knows some complicated words but doesn't understand some basic ones. As a native French speaker myself, whose second language is English, I found this completely unrealistic. I also found it annoying that there were so many mistakes when Lili speaks French — the editor should have made sure that the use of French by native French speakers in the story was correct. I hope this was only because I read an advance copy.
Lastly, while Lili was understandably completely stunned to have travelled in time, she kept being very dumb regarding certain "modern" things when she could have ended up taking them in stride after a little while. She also had a very high opinion of herself, having saved several dozen people in France. While this was admirable, I thought she seemed to think of herself as a saint and wasn't very humble. The romance also felt very flat, especially as I didn't like Lili.
The pacing was off, the first few chapters were too long. I also found that the first chapter didn't set the scene well enough, you don't really get to know and get attached to Lili.
I didn't like the simplistic way in which many things were written, it sometimes felt like a book for a younger audience. I didn't find Sarah M. Eden's magic with words and characters in "The Tides of Times". If anyone is a French speaker, enjoys the setting of the book and is looking for a middle-grade book, I'd rather recommend the Soeurs Espérance series, starting with "Signé Charlotte".
This book has excellent reviews, but despite the promising premise, it just wasn't for me. I'm glad others loved it though!
*I received a free eARC in exchange for my honest opinion*
What a thrilling ride! I don't read a lot of time travel novels, but I do enjoy them when they are done right. And this one is indeed done right!
Lili Minet is a young French woman living through the horrors of the French Revolution and the appropriately-named Reign of Terror in 1793. No one is safe, no one can be trusted, and survival is balanced on a knife edge. Lili works to help smuggle innocent French people out of the country to safety and is on the verge of escaping herself when she finds herself thrown overboard during a storm and transported to 1873, where she is pulled out of the water by Armitage Pierce, one of the men who runs the lighthouse.
It is hard to write this review without spoilers, as I want to rave about all my favorite parts! I loved the fact that while it is time-traveling, it is still all historical, with no contemporary scenes. (Well, except for one tiny glimpse of one. 😉) And I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was more than just one "travel". The attention to detail in this story is fantastic. I found myself wishing I knew more about the French Revolution, yet it was never a hindrance to not be well-versed in the knowledge of it. I LOVE the way Sarah Eden wove the elements of her story together. Phenomenal! It made for an exciting, intricate story line, without feeling contrived or being confusing or hard to follow. I am also pleased with the ending - although it is a to-be-continued story, there was no cliffhanger. Most of it is wrapped up nicely for now, while still leaving me to eagerly anticipate the continuation!
And can we talk about that gorgeous cover design? 🤩 I received a copy of this book from the publisher; a positive review was not required.
“I will go wherever and whenever you go, ma bien-aimee.”
My heart has just experienced the story of a lifetime as I drifted through the tides of time. On the cusp of the French Revolution, Lili manages to escape on a ship and finds herself 80 in the future. The beautiful and innovative way this story ties together the past and the present and all aspects of love is enchanting. This historical romance is full of emotion and intrigue, and I can’t get over the way it drew me right in.
Armitage is a lighthouse keeper living with his grandfather and Lili challenges and upends his life. I fell in love with Armitage and his grandfather. The multi-faceted time slips capture pieces of history and familial connections, as well as deliver a very engaging story. I love this couple, the townsfolk, and every aspect of this well-written and mystical story that swirls around these magical tides of time.
I’m so eager to read more!
Content: non-graphic talk of war/death; near drowning; mild romance

Sarah M Eden is changing directions with a time travel novel. Lili Monet has helped several people escape the gullitine and needs to find her way out of France. When a bad storm pulls her eighty years into the future, she is perplexed about how she arrived at a lighthouse near the sea and quickly befriends the owners of the lighthouse. As things unfold, she realizes the storm and a green light in the midst of the sea are what push her through the tides of time and once again ride the tides of time. There is quite a bit of French mixed in with English but it is all apart of the feelings surrounding the time period and it didn't bother me, I only mentioned it because of another review that I read.
Sarah M Eden has been dishing out swoony historical after swoony historical. And now she has turned the “Tides” to try her hand at speculative fiction. I am pleased to announce that she has given the reader a fantastic story that had me glued to the pages!
This time travel historical was absolutely spellbinding. I am always in awe of an author’s ability to weave such an intricately complex storyline. The Tides of Time was fantastic! I was immediately drawn to the characters and their unique situations, the slow burn was sweet, and the fantasy aspect kept me on my toes.
I am excited to see the next book in the series.
