One moment, Isla Crawford is inside McQuivey’s Costume Shop trying on a Jacobean-style gown for the parliamentary Autumn Ball, and the next, she is standing in an unfamiliar garden, barefoot, coatless, and at the mercy of a fierce storm. Confused, she seeks refuge in a Tudor manor, where she discovers that she has inexplicably traveled back to 1605, mere weeks before the culmination of Guy Fawkes’s infamous Gunpowder Plot. Simon Hartworth, Lord Bancroft, finds his orderly seventeenth-century life disrupted when a mysterious woman appears on his sister’s doorstep during a storm. Intrigued by the stranger’s quirks and bewildering speech, he feels compelled to protect her and heed her warnings about a fatal plot against Parliament. As Simon is drawn into Isla’s dangerous scheme to stop the evildoers, he can’t help but also feel drawn to her. With seemingly no way to get back home, Isla uses her twenty-first-century knowledge of the past to try to thwart Guy Fawkes and his coconspirators without altering the course of history forever. She and Simon must race to unravel the threads of the treasonous plot even as they wonder how their hearts will navigate their deepening connection and the seemingly insurmountable four centuries that separate their lives.

She loves to travel and experience other cultures, but when she's home, her favorite activities are spending time with her family, cooking, and reading.
All the stars for this amazing book! I absolutely love time-slip romances & couldn’t wait to read A Time Traveler’s Masquerade! Sian Bessey knocks it out of the park in this clever, original, intriguing, romantic story. From the moment Isla steps into McQuivey’s Costume Shop & winds up in 1605 England, I was hooked!
In modern day England, Isla Crawford visits McQuivey’s Costume Shop on a last minute hunt for a Wendy costume for a masquerade party. But, the owner convinces her to try on a Jacobean costume. Isla enters the dressing room & barely gets her costume on before she suddenly finds herself in 1605 England barefoot & in the rain. Luckily, there’s a handsome gentleman visiting his sister who takes her in. While at first Isla thinks this is all an elaborate prank, she soon realizes she’s now living in Jacobean England.
As she tries to discover her purpose in this time period, she finds herself inexplicably falling in love with Simon Hartworth, Lord Bancroft. When she realizes it’s just weeks before Guy Fawkes plot against Parliament, she must risk everything to make sure the historical timeline doesn’t change. But, what happens to her & Simon as they race to foil a deadly plot of conspirators?
I loved this story! With the carefully woven in historical details, the humor, & swoon-worthy romance, this story completely captured my heart. I enjoyed Isla navigating 1605 England. From learning to ride a horse to writing with a quill, it was fun seeing a modern woman learning the skills of the time period. I loved Simon! He’s every bit the attractive English Lord. I enjoyed how he & Isla entertained his little nephews & how he’d question the modern slang she uses.
The Guy Fawkes plot was fascinating. I knew bits & pieces, but it was so exciting to learn more through this story. Having Guy Fawkes’ point of view added to the intensity. The intrigue & suspense as Simon & Isla try to ensure history remains true kept me eagerly turning the pages. As with all time-slips, there’s the fear of slipping back & I could hardly wait to see if/when.
Highest of recommendations! Can’t wait for the next one! I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are completely my own & shared voluntarily.
🕰️ Release Date: April 1, 2025 🕰️ . . . This book was simply marvelous! I don’t read historical fiction nearly as often as I once did, but I still recognize a well written story when I read it and this one was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of time travel, romance, a touch of fantasy, and historical fiction found in the pages of this McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance. I look forward to reading more in this series!
Isla Crawford spent her days working as a government employee until, in a turn of events, she finds herself stepping through a dressing room door into seventeenth-century England. She had gone to the McQuivey’s Costume Shop in search of an outfit for the upcoming Autumn Ball and was coerced by Mrs. McQuivey to try on an a late Elizabethan/early Jacobean era costume. It was only after outfitting herself that she went to exit the dressing room and found herself in England, 1605.
Lord Bancroft stumbled upon a drenched and quivering woman on his sister’s doorstep and, without hesitation, invited her inside out of the cold and rain. Very quickly the family discovered that this woman was far from ordinary and, after hearing Isla’s far-fetched tales of a time in the distant future, they sought to discover her purpose in being sent to the past.
Watching Guy Fawkes’s infamous Gunpowder Plot unfold in this book was quite entertaining. I enjoy watching history play out in a good historical fiction book and this one brought such satisfaction and joy to my reader’s heart!
The romance found in this story was tastefully written and immensely swoon-worthy! I loved watching Simon and Isla’s relationship progress throughout the story as they traversed through life in the pastures of Surrey and on their epic quest in London. . . . I received a complimentary arc from Shadow Mountain Publishing. All opinions listed are purely my own.
What a fantastic time travel story! I loved it! The story starts off in modern day, and soon Isla is sent back in time to 1605, by means of a costume shop. When she gets there she is completely confused, she thought she was just trying on a costume and now she is back in time. She meets Lord Bancroft, Simon, and his family. After she figures out she was sent back in time, she proves to the family she is from the future. Then the question is why was she sent back? Guy Fawkes might be the reason. Like I said I loved this story! I loved Isla and Simon! I thought it fun that they had to learn each other’s ways especially their way of speaking. I also loved Simon’s family and how they were so welcoming of Isla and wanted to help her. I liked that we got a dual pov of Isla and Simon but also got Guy Fawkes’s pov! How cool! I loved the way the author incorporated Isla into what happened with Guy Fawkes’s real story. And of course the romance between Isla and Simon was great! And I loved the ending so much!! Overall a fantastic story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
"She was close. To the edge of the lawn, certainly, but more to the point, she was pressed against him and had yet to pull away. His gaze dropped from her captivating eyes to her upturned mouth. Heaven help him. She surely had no idea how much he wished to touch the lock of hair that had fallen from her pins or run his fingers across her soft skin, or kiss her enticing lips. He took a steadying breath."
A Time Traveler’s Masquerade by Sian Ann Bessey
Oh my gosh! This book! Sian Ann Bessey writes some of the most intriguing suspenseful historical books. The ending to this one completely blew my mind. And I learned things about a political event in English history that is not well-known by Americans.
"Remember, remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason, and plot..."
Isla Crawford slips through time right to the Jacobean era England when Catholics are persecuted, dresses are very wide in style, and the black plague ravages the cities. What she also comes to realize is that she has arrived just in time to help stop a secret plot to overthrow the English government. As she and Simon race against time, the clock ticks ever closer to November 5, and that possibly fatal day. Will their love withstand transcend across history? Can they stop Guy Fawkes and the other treasoners in time?
Read "A Time Traveler's Masquerade" to find out.
"I know of no reason Why the gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot."
Simon and Isla are so brave, so sweet, and so incredibly selfless. They both sacrifice to help stop the infamous plot. I enjoyed riding on horseback with them, attending riding and etiquette lessons of the Jacobean era, and going along with them as they figured out how to stop the conspirators. Their humor had me laughing out loud multiple times. And I just adored their sweet, gradual romance.
Some of my favorite parts were when they spent time with his nephews. The boys are so fun!
This book was fascinating and I couldn't put it down! Like I said above, I loved learning about a new-to-me time period and part of history I knew nothing about. I have the inkling now to go and read more about the time period in general, and specifically the Gunpowder Plot of November 5. Though I have the feeling, I won't learn much more about the plot because Sian Ann Bessey includes a great author's note which lets us know that the plot and most of her characters are true to the historical event.
The way the ending was going, I had no idea how it would end. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.
I definitely recommend this one! And I am so looking forward to book 2 in this series!

"A Time Traveler's Masquerade" by Sian Ann Bessey is a new favorite time travel story. It is the first in a new series called “A McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance” and is part of the award-winning “Proper Romance” collection. It is set in the Jacobean era (early 1600s) in England. I learned so much about Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder Plot of 1605 while reading this engaging story. I love this period of history and Ms. Bessey really brought it alive with her attention to historical detail and extensive research. She makes history accessible and explains things well in case one is not familiar with this era. It is a time of religious upheaval and division between Protestants and Catholics. I appreciate that this is a clean read, which is not common for stories set in this time period. There is no explicit content, and it is suitable for general audiences, especially young readers.
The story mixes a little fantasy with history, sweet romance, adventure, amazing characters, and a swoony romance. There’s time-travel, rescue romance, plenty of fish-out-of-water moments, and a race against time. Our heroine, Isla Crawford, loves reading and the past. She is from the present day but travels back to the Jacobean era through a costume shop. I appreciate how Isla struggles to fit in during the past and even things like certain words, how she speaks and writes make her stand out. The obstacles she faces are very realistic. Simon Hartworth, the hero, is one many readers will fall for! I love the banter between Simon and Isla and their horse riding. There’s danger and suspense and I was on the edge of my seat wondering how it would all play out and if Isla has a part to play. Will Isla and Simon also catch feelings in the meantime as they try to help stop the treasonous plot? Another thing that really made this story unique is getting a point of view from Guy Fawkes. This is my first book by this author, but it certainly will not be my last. I cannot wait for book two in the series!
Content: I give this a G rating. Some examples of the content are: someone is an orphan; someone curses, but the words are not written; men drink alcohol; a brief mention of past assault.

A TIME TRAVELER’S MASQUERADE a McQuivey’s COSTUME SHOP ROMANCE by: Sian Ann Bessey @sian_bessey
-I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~One moment, Isla Crawford is inside McQuivey’s Costume Shop and the next, she is swept back in time to 1605, where she us now standing in an unfamiliar garden, barefoot, coatless, and at the mercy of a fierce storm, mere weeks before the culmination of Guy Fawke’s infamous Ginpowder Plot…
-A TIME TRAVELER’S MASQUERADE, is simply put, a beautiful story that will immediately have your attention and sweep you along for an unforgettable adventure! Yes, there are many twists and turns, endearing characters, quite a unique setting, delightful humor, a captivating romance, and moments that will have your heart either sighing in content or racing with the intrigue, suspense, and trying to unraveling threads of a treasonous plot, while love is the air. I admit that I was holding my breath at times, that dear characters could have their own happily there after even with four centuries separating their lives, and so much was at stake. I loved seeing dear characters take such courage, do all within their means to rise to the occasion to thwart conspirators without altering the course of history and to the quest for dear love, no matter the time period. How pleasantly surprised and content I was, with where this story ended! Add in a tender epilogue my friends, and this story becomes extra lovely! Dear @sian_bessey I simply adore your beautiful writing and this new series of yours. It deserves all the stars!👌📚💯❤️

“You always remember the people you allow into your heart.”
When you walk into a costume shop looking for a ballgown & accidentally time-slip your way into 1605 England without your phone, your coat, or your sanity intact… you know it’s going to be a wild ride.
And let me tell you—Sian Bessey’s Time Traveler’s Masquerade delivers. Every. Single. Page.
What’s a modern woman to do when she crash-lands into a political powder keg of historical treason? Clearly, get mistaken for a spy, stir up some romantic tension with a nobleman named Lord Bancroft (swoons guaranteed), & try not to wreck the timeline.
Here’s what made this time-travel tale unforgettable:
MOMENTS TO WATCH FOR ⏳ Time-travel via dressing room door? Yes, please. 🎭 Fake relationship + masquerade ball = double the tension ❤️ Clean but heart-racing slow-burn romance 🏇 Horseback riding lessons with swoony banter 🕵️♂️ Spying, sneaking, & unraveling the Gunpowder Plot ✨ A hero who listens, a heroine who adapts, & chemistry that leaps centuries
The epilogue. Trust me.
TOP MOMENTS TO WATCH FOR 💠 Isla trying to pass off her 21st-century lingo without being tossed in the Tower. 💠 Simon’s nephews absolutely stealing scenes & hearts. 💠 Isla’s face during her first meal in the 1600s—bless her. 💠 That moment in the library (again—you’ll know). 💠 Isla & Simon on a mission in London. Yes. Just… yes.
💭 I devoured this swoony, suspenseful, time-twisty gem. It had me grinning, swooning, & stress-snacking all at once.
💭 One of the best parts? The Guy Fawkes plot is real history—Bessey just filled in the murky gaps with swoony fiction & high-stakes drama. It thrilled my heart, and fed my nerdy soul.
💭 If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you tripped into history & fell in love with someone you were never supposed to meet—this one’s for you.
I'm a big fan of books about time traveling! I love watching characters get placed in a time that pulls them from their comfort zone and has them forced to figure out how to survive as well as if choices they make will alter the course of history, or if they are meant to make those choices to make history be what it is. Such a fun conundrum of a thing! Haha!
Isla finds herself transported by to the seventeenth century and definitely is completely out of her element there! But I loved watching her acclimate and learning to trust those who found her. Especially the handsome Lord Bancroft, Simon Hartworth! And how the author was able to plot it all out and make it work was well done! I loved it so much and I'm sooooo happy that this is not the only book in the McQuivey's Costume Shop books!!! Woohooo!!! Mrs. McQuivey was a hoot! And she has perfect timing! Just saying! *winks*
You'll love the suspense, cleverness, sweet love story and how it all pans out. We get POVs from several different characters, the good, the bad and the ugly. I'm ready for more!!!
Content: Clean. Some suspense, some sweet kisses and nothing more.
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
A time-slip romance is one of my new favorite tropes. Isla is looking for a costume for work and after trying on a dress, walks out of the dressing room into a rainy night in 1605 England and straight into the Gunpowder Plot. I can’t even imagine the terror of ending up in a place and situation without the modern conveniences and without a friend in sight. Luckily, Simon is there to the rescue and with his help and that of his sister and her husband, Isla slowly uncovers her reasons for the slip.
Historical fiction is my favorite way to learn about the past and this Guy Fawkes plot was real. I loved the way Sian Bessey skillfully creates a story to wrap around this true moment in time, allowing for some creative license to fill in the vagueness and to bring it to life in a new way with such wonderful characters. With passages of suspense, seconds of a slow-burn romance, and a captivating tension to NOT rewrite history, this one drew me right in and never let me go.
The horseback riding lessons were magical, as were the tender moments with Simon’s nephews. The fake relationship obviously stole my heart. Simon’s swooniness stole my breath. And watching this very modern, capable woman learn to live where she landed was so satisfying.
I loved these characters and enjoyed watching them work together in a sweet, yet calculating way. This one is very well done and I’m hoping for more stories coming from the dressing room of McQuivey’s Costume Shop.
Content: mild romance; mild moments of peril
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were voluntarily given*
I liked this one! It’s a quick and easy read with a lot of historical aspects. Flying back to the early 1600’s, Isla is taken in by Simon and his family. I loved the soft and supportive nature of Simon’s family and the trust they had in Isla and hopefully stopping a villainous plot.
There were some POV moments from Guy Fawkes and that did take me out of the story a bit. I didn’t think it was necessary to the plot line to get perspective so those parts stuck out to me most.
I enjoyed the soft romance between Isla and Simon. They were an easy pair to love. I adored all of the interactions they had together and watching them grow to care for one another. There’s some good suspense and I liked how the time travel aspects worked out in this book (aka it stayed mostly in one time period for the book which is my personal preference vs. going back and forth).
Definitely a new favorite time travel! Wow, this one really took a new turn on it, so many surprises and that ending...🤯 Did NOT see that coming!!
Isla time travels, unknowingly, to 1605 - right before Guy Fawkes' plot begins. She's immediately thrown into the Elizabethan world, and strangers that makes her so confused. Simon was the perfect MMC, being the friend Isla needed and making her feel at home. 🥰
I think my favorite part about time travel books is how it takes them awhile to figure out where they're at, what year they're in, and just the shock. 😅 And then the shock wares off, and just the sliding into a whole new world, like they were made for it. Isla had her difficulties and many things to learn, but still perfect. 🩷
You'll have to read for yourself for all the shocking and swoony moments, and I highly recommend it! 🩷
ℹ️ Content: Clean, closed-door, no language, no spice, only few kisses
*I received a paperback copy in exchange for review, all opinions are my own
I’ve always heard such great things about Sian Ann Bessey’s book, so I had high expectations for this one. And y’all! It did not disappoint! I loved the characters and the story was so intriguing. I love learning about history, and this followed the timeline of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. I knew of it but didn’t know much of the details, so this book definitely made me want to look more into it! The banter between Isla and Simon was so cute and I absolutely loved their relationship. I also liked Simon’s sister and her family. You should most definitely add this book to your tbr! I’m so excited for book two of the McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance series coming later this year!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a kisses only time travel romance. It is the first book in the A McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance series by Sian Ann Bessey.
I love a time travel story that doesn't feature mystical or paranormal elements. I knew that this was a "clean" time travel romance and didn't read the blurb to know what time periods were featured. I just knew that the cover was beautiful and I wanted to read it!
The historical time that is featured in this story is one that I had heard of and knew small amounts about, but I found this book very informative and fascinating. I was thoroughly invested in the characters and the events going on around them. I loved the story!
I was given an opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book by Shadow Mountain Publishers and Netgalley. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The one thing that bothered me about this book follows....It doesn't affect my rating, because as I said, I loved it. On several occasions characters remark on the speech of the person that traveled to their time period. It actually plays a part in several scenes. My issue comes from the time period this takes place. These characters should be speaking Old English, like what the King James Bible is written in. Yet their speech sounds more like Regency books I have read. I know that it wouldn't be advisable to have a book written for today's audiences in KJV English. People have a hard time understanding the Bible written in that manner and would not be willing to read a novel for fun in it. I just thought drawing attention to a few words that were not understood in this historical setting when the dialog we read from then isn't accurate was a bit ironic.
What a delightful escape into the past! A Time Traveler's Masquerade, the first in the McQuivey's Costume Shop series, ticked all the boxes for me as a time slip historical fiction lover. With its rich historical detail, clean swoony romance, and a touch of suspense, this book swept me away to 1605 England. Sian Ann Bessey masterfully weaves the fascinating backdrop of Guy Fawkes and the infamous Gunpowder Plot into an enthralling narrative that's both immersive and informative. If you enjoy clean romance, rich historical atmosphere, and just the right amount of intrigue, you'll love this book too. I couldn't put it down and am already counting down until book two releases. Highly recommend! Swipe to see a mood collage.
A Time Traveler’s Masquerade is the first book I’ve read by Sian Ann Bessey, and it most certainly will not be the last! I was hooked by this story from the first chapter and, if I’d had a choice, wouldn’t have put it down. I’ve heard of Guy Fawkes and knew the basics of the infamous Gunpowder Plot, and of the celebrations that still occur, but it was so cool to learn more about this topic.
I don’t read a ton of time travel stories, but I always love the dichotomy of a modern person in a familiar yet unfamiliar world; we experience many of the same issues today as people did centuries ago, albeit under drastically different circumstances. I liked Isla’s perspective, and also appreciated the inclusion of Simon’s point of view as a 17th-century lord.
I will definitely be devouring Bessey’s backlist as soon as I can, and am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. Strong 4.5/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This story was a true gem! From the start, I was curious about how time travel would work, and I was thrilled by how seamlessly it all came together. The author made jumping between different time periods feel magical, and I was hooked from the very first page.
The way the story took me back to a real historical event and showed love blossoming through time was incredible. Lord Bancroft, a noble from 1605, and Isla, a woman from 2025, seemed like they'd never fit together. Yet, their differences only made their connection stronger. Watching Isla navigate her new world and seeing the friendship and love grow between her and Bancroft was heartwarming. Their relationship developed so naturally, and it was a joy to watch.
This book had it all: rich history, family bonds, and a thrilling race against time. Every page felt like a gift, filled with excitement, romance, and adventure. I enjoyed this story from beginning to end, and I can’t wait to dive into the next book in McQuivey’s Costume Shop series!
Here’s what you can expect from this magical journey: -> Time Travel that pulls you right in -> A Rescue Romance that tugs at your heart -> A Fish-Out-Of-Water story full of wonder -> A Race Against Time that keeps you on edge -> A Fake Betrothal that adds the perfect spark -> Real, relatable Family Dynamics -> The fascinating Jacobean Era (1600s) -> Historical Events that bring the past to life -> A delightful mix of Fantasy, Romance, and Adventure!
This was such a fantastic read, and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this amazing series!
I received a complimentary copy of this story. This review reflects my honest opinion.
It's hardly a secret that I enjoy the Proper Romance series, not because I'm against sex scenes, but because they're generally extraordinarily well written and researched. This one adds a setting I don't often see in historical romances (time travel or otherwise), 1605, with a plot that involves stopping Guy Fawkes' infamous gunpowder plot. Bessey uses an actual unknown in the historical record to frame the story, which I really appreciated, and overall this was simply a delight. My one complaint is that I thought the romance developed a bit abruptly, but that doesn't diminish my excitement to read the next book in the series.
The latest release from the Proper Romance line is another timeslip novel. Author Sian Ann Bessey mixes present day with the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 Jacobean England. Isla Crawford is working as a press secretary to a member of the British Parliament. Her search for an appropriate gala costume takes her to Mrs. McQuivey’s Costume Shop. Instead of finding the perfect costume, she finds herself transported to 1605 where she must contend with her knowledge of the past and determination to not alter her present. But perhaps her knowledge of the past is exactly what is needed to prevent a government collapse.
I adored this gentle time-travel romance. My favorite thing is how seamless the historic detail is woven into the plot. The development of the narrative fit so perfectly into what is known about this historic event. It was lovely to just get straight to the story. There’s no time spent trying to explain the time travel system or make it believable. I loved the idea of trying on a historic costume and being transported to that time and liked that the story could just let that stand.
This story is just delightful! The characters, the setting, the multiple points of view. All combine to make this a rich, detailed experience. I enjoyed every minute and look forward to more fun with Mrs. McQuivey and her costume shop.
Oh my goodness, give me a time-slip romance any time and I know I will love it! Especially if it's from Sian Ann Bessey. Her books are always masterfully done and never disappoint.
This enticing novel starts its story in a costume shop. Who knew going into a dressing room can change your course of life? But it did for Isla Crawford.
I did not know the history of Guy Fawkes before reading this novel, but I now find myself wanting to research it and learn all the things. This novel gives you a glimpse of that history. Add in the author's creativity on how the behind-the-scenes workings lead up to the day of November 5th, when they put a stop to the Gunpowder Plot in 1605.
The characters in this novel are some of my favorites that I have experienced this year. Isla was thrown into an era that was so different from hers. But she was willing to do what it took to learn the Elizabethan ways to help save those that she quickly fell in love with. And Simon. Oh, we can't forget him. Teaching her to ride a horse. And the way he was with his nephews! It was the sweetest thing. He could have turned her away and not help her, or believe her. But he did, which made him even more swoon-worthy.
I am always astounded by the mind of an author. The creativity that fills it. This book was beautifully done and deserves all the stars. I can’t wait to see where Sian takes us next on her time-traveling journey.
This book is one of my top reads this year!! Once I started, I was in for the long haul!
I loved Isla and her relentless dedication to be herself and do what needs to be done! To go back in time is a big deal and she handles it with grace. Her determination is so impressive and I hope I am like her if I ever go back in time!
Simon and his fascination with 2025 is my favorite! He consistently wants to learn more and is such a good listener. His love for Isla is portrayed beautifully!
As a history person I LOVED this book! I had heard of Guy Fawkes Day and Remember, Remember the 5th of November, but didn’t know much about the actual events. This story had me on the edge of my seat, racing to finish the book while doing my best to savor the first time reading it. Let’s be honest: I will most definitely be reading it again!
Read this book if you like: 🔥 Guy Fawkes Day 🔥 Learning About Other Centuries 🔥 Children’s Games 🔥 Riding Horses 🔥 Names, Dates, and Facts 🔥 Intuition 🔥 Fighting for a Cause 🔥 Tackling Challenges 🔥 Daily Outings 🔥 Dinner Parties 🔥 For God and Country
Content: brief mentions of bubonic plague symptoms and death, mild violence (appropriate for 1605 political unrest), romance- kisses only.
Thank you to @sianannbessey for the #gifted copy; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a gem! I was in love with this book from the beginning. I loved the characters, the plot, the twists and turns. I was sad to reach the end of the book! So so good.
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the advanced copy! This was my first book by this author, but I will be reading everything she has written now. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out in November.
This was a fantastic story!! I loved the urgency as they try to foil Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot and Islas’s education about the 17th century!! The romance between Isla and Simon was beautiful and so well written and this is such a fun and exciting new genre for Proper Romance!!
I was given an ARC copy in return for my honest review of this book!
"A Time Traveler's Masquerade" offers a compelling exploration of temporal displacement through the lens of a female character who unexpectedly finds herself in a historical context. The narrative intricately weaves themes of societal integration, identity concealment, and the intricacies of past romantic entanglements. As she endeavors to assimilate into an 16th-century high society rife with intrigue, the protagonist unravels complex secrets that define the era.
The text meticulously examines the dynamics of time travel's impact on personal relationships, challenging the notion of love as a constant across temporal boundaries. It raises profound questions about the nature of passion and commitment when juxtaposed against the ephemeral nature of time.
The pacing of the narrative is commendable, maintaining reader engagement through its well-structured plot development and character arcs. The characterization is particularly notable; both primary and secondary characters are crafted with depth, contributing significantly to the thematic resonance and overall impact of the story. This book is a noteworthy addition to the time travel genre, blending adventure, emotion, and the philosophical complexities that accompany the quest for love through the ages.
I received a complimentary e-copy of this book and read it with pleasure. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, Shadow Mountain, Proper Romance, and NetGalley.
Goodness, how do I even begin to put into words just how much I loved A Time Traveler’s Masquerade? This book completely swept me off my feet in the most delightful way! The concept alone was enough to pull me in, and it did not disappoint.
Being familiar with Guy Fawkes Day thanks to my husband (who’s from the UK), I thought I knew a little bit about the historical significance of November 5th. But getting a closer look at the days leading up to the event was an absolute treat! Sian Ann Bessey brings the era to life with such fun and fascinating detail.
Isla and Simon... sigh. These two were absolutely amazing together. Truly. Reading their dialogue and how they interacted with Simon’s nephews was delightful. Watching their relationship unfold was such a joy, and it added so much depth to the already great story.
I also have to point out the dedication to Marilee—it’s well deserved. She truly is a wonderful person! Marilee has the skill to make everyone feel seen and appreciate which is a rare and beautiful gift.
Sian Ann Bessey has truly created something special here. I couldn’t get enough of this time-traveling adventure, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good historical twist with plenty of romance. (Only kisses) ;) A Time Traveler’s Masquerade is an absolute gem!
After going to find a costume for her company's theme at a party, Isla finds herself in a storm with no shoes. She makes her way to a nearby manor and runs into Lord Bancroft who is leaving London to avoid the bubonic plague. In a turn of events, Isla NEEDS to be in 1605 to stop a disaster from unfolding. In this time traveling historical fiction romance, Isla tells the family that she is from the future and they work together to make the events that Isla read about in her history classes happen to avoid a plot to overthrow the government.
This book was outside the normal books I pick up but it was one I didn't want to put down. It truly brought so many genres together and was an enjoyable story.
A time travel romance story that is truly delightful! I am 100% convinced that Sian Ann Bessey could write a paper on some scientific mathematical theory (which are my two least favorite subjects) and I would gladly read it, most likely in one sitting. It is a race against time, history, and a treasonous plot. What happens when you combine a 21st century woman, a magical costume shop, a chivalrous 16th century gentleman, and the infamous gunpowder plot of 1605? You get an unforgettable story that is both informative, mysterious, and contains a pretty good swoony love story. I absolutely loved both Isla and Simon and how they both handled the situations they found themselves in. Both have remarkable strength and resilience in the face of uncertainty, plus they are both brilliant and figure out how to make sure history actually happens. One of my favorite things is when Isla explains modern amenities to Simon, and how Simon comes to support Isla in her purpose. I won’t give any spoilers but these two work so well together and I loved how they got to work and simply tried their best. And don’t even get me started on the historical people and events that actually existed/happened. The careful and authentic writing of these people and events gave the story so much depth and a whole new fascinating aspect. History comes alive in such an engaging way in this story that it holds you spellbound from the moment you’re thrown back in time with Isla. And as an American who only knew a little about this historical, and pivotal, moment in history it was fascinating to read more about it. So while this is a work of fiction, it includes so many factual people and events that it felt like a captivating history lesson. In case it wasn’t obvious, I really loved this book. The world needs more clean and wholesome romance, and adding time travel to that is the cherry on top! Make sure you add this to your reading lists and library!
Time Travel has long been one of my favorite themes. I was thrilled to learn that Proper Romance was launching a "Time Slip" series. It was even more exciting because Author Sian Ann Bessey was writing the first book.
The story begins inside McQuivey’s Costume Shop. Isla searches for a Wendy costume from Peter Pan. The shopkeeper suggests she try on a Jacobean-style gown. Suddenly, Isla is no longer in the shop. She finds herself in a garden, transported to a different time and place. Soon, she meets Lord Bancroft, Simon Hartworth, and his family. They are curious about her origins and reasons for being there.
I loved how the story mixes real history into a tale set in 1605, just weeks before Guy Fawkes’s Gunpowder Plot. Isla’s goal is to prevent this dangerous plan against Parliament and the King.
The relationship between Simon and Isla develops slowly, making it feel genuine. They both face tough challenges and must learn to trust each other. Their bond grows deeper as they uncover more about their separate worlds. The romance feels real and sincere because it takes time to blossom. As the date of the plot gets closer, the tension rises. Readers will wonder if Isla, Simon, and others can stop the impending threat.
This first book in a new series left me excited for more. I can’t wait to see what adventures await inside McQuivey’s Costume Shop.
