This was my first foreway into the Monster High new Scaremester series and I’m glad it got me into the comics! While they’re hardly a helpful extension of canon, I think they're pretty cute but this comic… jeez. First off, I must preface by saying that Frankie and operetta are my favourite characters from the webisodes. The dress shown in this issue is my personal favorite alumni Frankie doll and I actually own her. Yes, she is stunning and perfect. But this comic butchers them both! Operetta isn’t even in this comic despite Frankie's main love interest, Johnny Spirit, being Operetta's canonical boyfriend(well… her LAST canonical boyfriend. Poor Holt never got another ghoulfriend.) and Frankie is a tepid, lukewarm version of herself!
The biggest misconception in the Monster High fandom is that Fraankie is a vanilla character. If anything, she’s the only one that gets anything done around here! The reason she works so well as the main character and narrator for most of the boo-vies is because she’s usually the first to get on a scene and stake her claim on the plot. She’s not just kind(though admittedly, she is the nicest out of the main scare-ectors), she has a bit of sass and she’s not afraid to defend herself. I’m not sure why this comic made her so… weak? She’s embarrassed of being a bad dancer-though in the first season, she became a fearleader via her clumsiness and in the second season, she was the only good fearleader apart from Cleo-and is only confident near Johnny which… I’m well aware that these books aren’t canon but I can’t help but feel like they massacred my boy! Why is he nice? I’m not saying that you can’t update characters if they were originally bad-I actually quite like how these comics made Draculuara more assertive-but Johnny was a teenage delinquent. He was the epitome of the “bad boy”. He scared everyone around him, including Torelie and he only “softened up” to Operetta because she beat him! He’s proud and cocky and… monstrous. He’s really nice in this issue? It takes away a lot of his appeal. I’m guessing the author meant to make a reason for Frankie and Johnny to get together, which meant altering both of them, but they still don’t have that much chemistry!
The story follows Frankie, who is shunned by her “first fiend at monster high” Jonny Spirit, as they grow closer together and eventually go to the monster ball together. I like the idea of Frankie and Johnny knowing each other beforehand, I think it adds a bit of a backstory to Johnny(and explains how he looks like a 1950s greaser while supposedly living through the black plague) and it gives Frankie a nice little scene of her exploring monster high. I actually think these two could be fiends! Not only is Frankie fiends with Holt and Operetta but those are listed as Johnny's best fiends too! However… This story needs a romance, despite only two issues earlier, Frankie is supposedly flirting with Manny Taur? My girl needs better storylines. PLEASE MATTEL. Regardless, they don’t have much chemistry? They don’t really have any shared interests, rarely interact and Frankie goes from “boy, this guy sure does suck for standing me up for a year and a half” to “pick me up at ten!” which… I mean yeah. She would do the little “why don’t you ask me out?” bit and I really liked that but Johnny just sorta stands there? Any complaints about Frankie being a self insert can be said about Johnny in this version. Now. Would I date Frankie if given the chance? Yes. That's why this book is four stars. I’m just pointing out that it's bad writing.
Apart from that little tangent, I had very few issues with this book! I thought that the mystery of the disappearing students was nice, I loved the art style, Frankie had some funny moments(“oh no, he’s brain dead”) and I really loved the ballroom scene! It was fun picking out all the different characters! We had Robecca in her SDDC look dancing with Venus in a new look but it looks based on her Bloom and Gloom look, Gooliope Jellington looking… small, Lagoona and Finnegan, Jackson(clearly scorned after Mattel forgot about him for 10 years and then gave Frankie Johnny as a boyfriend), Holt and Operetta in her fang club look! There were a few more but that's just off the top of my head. I like this comic but Johnny and Frankie were such a weird pair, especially since Johnny doesn’t even HAVE a doll so it's not as if he appeals to adult collectors anyhow. He’s also in only one webisode and has exactly one line in the Haunted boo-vie so… maybe let's not have him be the first character to be brought back? If we won’t give Frankie Holt or Jackson, why not introduce the infamous “7” from her diaries? Or don’t give her a love interest? By god, even reintroducing her worst love interest ANDY would be better than this. Actually, scratch that, at least Johnny didn’t kidnap her.
