Everyone is heading home for the holidays. Everyone except Kate. Having just run away her boyfriend Lance’s unexpected proposal (in front of her entire family), Kate was the only person in her office happy to take an unexpected last-minute work trip posting to Boston.

Arriving in the snow-covered, fairy-light-filled city, Kate feels immediately at home. That is until she meets Sam, a cross between a lumberjack and an Abercrombie model standing in the kitchen of her new place. Which also happens to be his home thanks to a work mix-up. Given that it’s Christmas and there is nowhere else to stay, they agree to make it work.

But pretty soon it’s clear that Sam is not the ideal house mate. From drinking all the milk, turning the hot water off whilst she’s showering, and insisting she stay in her room for the entirety of ‘game night’ with the boys, Kate thinks Sam is the absolute worst. And he thinks the same of her.

When Sam surprisingly comes to her rescue, his frosty exterior finally thaws and when they open up to each other, they realise they have more in common than they thought. But when Lance unexpectedly arrives, Kate’s heart is torn. Go home with Lance or spend the holidays with a man she hardly knows, but who could turn out to be the one…

Opposites attract in this heart-warming and truly laugh-out-loud, enemies-to-lovers forced-proximity book. If you enjoy Catherine Walsh, Emily Henry and Beth Moran, you will love Snow Going Back!

4 stars - I totally enjoyed this one and I’m surprised at some of the rather harsh reviews for this title. I really connected with the FMC Kate, who tries too hard to please her family & friends and hates surprises; which leads to an unexpected and mistakenly-accepted marriage proposal followed almost immediately by a long work trip where she meets grumpy Sam in a super cute Vermont town. I really liked how Kate ’s character grew along with her backbone. I also really appreciated that this one was “closed door” and found it both quick and easy to read.

So, one of my fav Gangland/Family Drama authors ( loved every one of her 14 books ) suddenly brings out a ‘enemies to lovers romantic comedies’ read….to say was intrigued would be to down play it 😎

The book revolves around Kate who says Yes to a proposal from Lance ( but doesn’t realise she has ) and is then steamrolled into a near date wedding…..she is then, re her job, called without delay to America to sort out a legal/will conundrum with a firm she is representing and well, the story takes on a whole new side

Now, for me it was a slowish start and didn’t warm to Kate but I felt the book came strong in America when we met some baddies, notably Aubrey and her Gran Janice and the gangland/family drama tones reared its head, it balanced the story well and had me invested in these characters and what they would do and how Kate would try to stop them, the enemies to lovers bit played second fiddle then tbh although did play out well

A mention for Kate’s Mum, Eleanor, a fantastic character, good cringey to read as you never knew what she would say

I did enjoy it, I wasn’t laughing out loud as the blurb suggests although there was good comic moments ( especially via Eleanor as mentioned above ) but also some good family/character led twists and turns that the author does so well and a satisfying ending

A good book for Crimbo and for me an interesting genre swop read

I cannot condone stories that feature emotional infidelity, stringing along a mmc for 75% of the novel, and overall selfish and horrible actions by a leading FMC. I cannot root for the FMC because she was a terrible person through the majority of the novel. The "romance" was miniscule with who she ended up with and he was about as flat and static of a character as you can get. The guy she rejected had more depth. I hate rating books like this low, but this is truly one of the worst books I've read this year.

This is not a fun, light, or even romantic holiday book and the cover does not fit with the contents of the book.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

After unintentionally accepting a surprise proposal, Emma escapes to the States. Where she finds herself living with the grumpy nephew of the estate she is settling.

📚 enemies to lovers
📚 love triangle
📚 small town
📚 dual POV

🚫 clean romance

|Thoughts|
The set up for this story had me hooked. And feel it is a talent to be able to write some truly loathsome characters (namely her mother). And her fiancé who has some fairly antiquated views on marriage and motherhood.

“That wouldn’t be a very stable environment Kate…Children need their mother to be a constant.”

It’s not all about you, Catherine.

Thought it was an interesting choice to have an English character but an American narrator. Whilst the story was entertaining, found the listening experience was a bit stilted due to the accents. Enemies to lovers trope is a classic tripe, and found those aspects of the story early on be fun, I didn’t really feel much chemistry between these two.

“utterly crazy for you in fact. Despite all my best attempts not to be”

Whilst there were aspects of this story that engaged me, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Snow going Back by Emma Tallon

Audiobook was excellent. Narration on point even if the accent did slip on occasion.

Kate is a lawyer, right after her boyfriend proposes, she is sent to Boston to figure out a will. It's a welcome reprieve from the proposal she didn’t want except the house they put her up in, has the nephew still living in it and he isn’t happy about her being there.

The antagonism is evident but the more they learn about each other, the less frost there is in the house… Except now she has feelings for a man she barely knows and a wedding to a man she didn’t want to say yes to..

I loved the relationship between Kate and Sam. They seem so different and the pranking they do… had me giggling so hard! It was nice to watch these enemies turn to friendship. I feel like Kate was stuck in a rut before agreeing to marry a man she had lukewarm feelings for. It was great to watch her spread her wings.

I thought the writing was cute and I loved all the Christmas feels! It was a super easy read and very entertaining.

🌶️ 0/5 Closed Door Romance

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this ebook!
This was a cute, closed-door holiday romance. Honestly, it was pretty forgettable though - not in a particularly good or bad way. It was full of cliche moments that felt like watching a less than enjoyable Hallmark Christmas movie. Sadly, that is exactly what I was looking for and it held up. I didn't love the FMC as she was a bit too over-the-top people pleaser and it got a bit annoying but I was glad to see growth in her character by the end. This was cute addition to any holiday romance TBR.

3.75 ⭐️

Overall, this was a sweet story of growth and self boundaries. I enjoyed the FMC and enjoyed her personal growth throughout the story. I thought the MMC was enjoyable, but wasn’t anything super special.

I didn’t enjoy that the FMC’s fiance was strung along for the first 75% of the book, but when you take a step back while she was thinking that she didn’t want to be married i think she also just thought it was what she was supposed to do. Was there emotional infidelity, maybe? BUT i think overall she just needed to set some personal boundaries and figure out what she truly wanted in life.

I enjoyed the basic plot points of the book as well - the concept of an outside lawyer coming in and her “getting to know” the deceased couple. It was fresh and new to me and i liked that.

The narration was well done & that’s why it got the extra .75 ⭐️

You’ll find: Grumpy/Sunshine, “enemies” to lovers, Tension but no spice, romantic comedy

Overall, i’d recommend it but would be clear on the blurry line of emotional infidelity that occurs in the book!

Overall I enjoyed Snow Going Back, but it didn’t quite stand out as anything special. I enjoyed the writing style and the narrators but I couldn’t quite get over the emotional infidelity in this one. The small town vibes were so cosy. I’d recommend this one if you like closed door romances with light and cosy vibes

Thank you Dreamscape Media for the gifted audiobook.

tl;dr: Snow Going Back has all the ingredients for a great book, but it focuses so much on telling rather than showing that I struggled to connect with the story and characters. Overall, 3 stars

There’s a lot to like: the characters are engaging and the plot has serious potential. I even laughed out loud a few times. But it’s missing that extra spark — the depth that pulls a reader into the story and makes them care about it.

For example, the main character describes the town she’s visiting as enchanting and unlike anything she’s ever experienced… but as the reader, we don’t see any of this from her actions or written description — we’re simply told. This pattern of telling over showing runs throughout the book, leaving the story feeling flat where it could have been vibrant.

I’d love to see this book re-worked with more focus on character and setting development, because the bones are there and it could be a real winner. As is though, it’s not for me.

Audio: I didn’t love the narrator either, unfortunately! The MC is British but the narrator’s British accent doesn’t sound authentic. The intonation feels off and the subtle nuances that native speakers use are missing.

This is one of the cutest small town Christmasy enemies to lovers ever!!!

There were times where I was a bit annoyed at the main character as she could’ve spoken up to put everyone out of their misery on more than one occasion… but to be fair, her mother was absolutely unbearable and her anxiety due to her mother was VERRRY valid.

I was absolutely living for each “enemy” interaction between Kate and Sam!!

I mean, in all honesty… Lance, who?? His character was absolutely annoying!!! The way he assumes Kate would quit her job without even asking to raise a family that she wasn’t even ready for was so infuriating! It was almost as infuriating as Kate never fucking sticking up for herself to not hurt other people 👀

But that’s what makes a good book for me! Being able to have all of these feelings for all of these different characters really makes the read worth it for me!

Three of my favorite things about this book:
* The slow realization that Kate was reliving the same love decisions that Cora was journaling about while staying in her house 🥹
* The full circle moment where Kate’s mother finally pulled her head out of her ass and put her daughter’s feelings first and apologized.
* Kate and her dads relationship is everything, my heart was so happy she had him 🩷

Such a lighthearted book while also playing through TOUGH family dynamics, relationship troubles, and the anxiety of an over bearing mother.

I absolutely could not put this book down, TY so much Net Galley for the opportunity to read/review this book 🩷

Lance proposed to Kate unexpectedly and in front of her entire family. After she ran away she needed a break and was happy that a last minute trip to Boston popped up at work. Perfect timing and a perfect escape it is exactly what she needed. With the city filled with twinkle lights and the streets covered in fresh fallen snow she feels right at home. After a mix up at work she finds Sam standing in her kitchen. How could this happen? But with it being Christmas there is no place else for either of them to go, so they decide to work it out. It doesn’t take long for them to dislike each other and their horrible and annoying living habits. As they lighten up on each other they actually decide they may have more in common with each other than they thought. Lance unexpectedly arrives to visit Kate and now Kate must decide, does she return home with Lance or could Sam be the one?

Snow Going Back, written by author Emma Tallon is a wonderful and festive rom-com that had me laughing out loud. I loved the banter between Kate and Sam. They were so funny and I really liked them. Kate wasn’t a fan of surprises so when lance proposed and then surprised her in Boston, I immediately thought “awe, poor Kate”. I was completely entertained from cover to cover. I really enjoyed this cute story and I look forward to more books from this author. I highly recommend this book.

Kate’s casual boyfriend proposes to her out of nowhere—and in front of her entire (and very excited) family. And she’s none too thrilled, but way too chicken to say anything. So when her boss calls with an urgent assignment in Boston, she’s only too happy to jump on a plane. Immediately.

Off she goes, and then learns she has to spend six weeks in a small town in Vermont sorting out the estate of a huge client and business owner. As she settles in to the house she’s been provided, she’s stunned to find that someone already lives there. Someone who’s already become her nemesis in this town. And who happens to be one of the hottest men she’s ever seen.

As they’re forced to share space and spend time together, and after some drama, they figure out things are better when they’re on the same team. Secrets are shared, doors are cracked open a bit, feelings grow.

The pettiness, pranks, and banter at the beginning cracked me up—I could read the book for those scenes alone. I loved how Kate and Sam grew closer in a platonic, though longing, way. However, Kate did annoy me for a lot of the book with her lack of a backbone, whether it was stringing people along or shying away other confrontations that almost had catastrophic consequences for other people. Sam also hid some things he shouldn’t have, which also could have spelled disaster. But I love how both characters experienced so much personal growth, supported each other, and figured out what they wanted. And Kate grew a backbone! Overall, a fun and heartwarming holiday read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨(3.5/5)

“I want you to take me as I am.”

“You make every day a little brighter just by being in it.”

This audiobook was well done. I liked the narrator.

The beginning of the book was a little hard to get into. It was sort of slow and I really didn’t care for any of the characters at all especially the MC (Kate Hunter). I had a hard time pushing through.

However, there was a lot of growth with the MC by the end of the book so I’d say the 2nd half was better than the first.

Definitely not a fav romance novel for me but it was decent enough that I finished it. Kate Hunter grew on me. I also liked the small town setting and how the characters had a family vibe about them.

3.5 rounded up

I completely picked this up on a whim and got totally invested in this small town enemies to lovers romance between a reclusive grump and a British lawyer who gets assigned to a case over the holidays. The pranks between the two main characters were hilarious and the David vs Goliath plot gave me all the warm cozies. Great for Hallmark Movie fans and even better as an audiobook. This was a cute and cosy story following Kate, a 35-year-old lawyer who finds herself navigating her boyfriend's unexpected proposal. The book is a fun romantic comedy with an enemies-to-lovers twist. For me, the ending felt like a somewhat HEA, but overall, it was a delightful book and a fun read for the holiday season!

The narration was clear and enjoyable, making it a pleasure to listen to.

Quick Summary: A holiday mix-up romance

My Review: Snow Going Back by Emma Tallon is a 2024 general fiction, adult romance novel. It is listed as a feel good enemies to lovers story.

About the Book: "Opposites attract in this heart-warming and truly laugh-out-loud enemies to lovers, forced proximity book."

After a nasty run in between a British lawyer and a local small town resident occurs, one would think the strangers would not have to cross paths again. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, the two have to share living space. It's obvious they don't like each other...or do they?

About the Characters:

Kate - > Accomplished, dedicated, peacekeeper who is not afraid to pull out her claws when needed, has a good heart

Sam - > Capable, observant, stubborn when crossed, kind, has a good heart

Lance - > Decent, rigid, opinionated, goes along, does not listen; seems well meaning in general

Kate's Mom - > Pushy, unrepentant nature, wants what she wants, negative energy, cares in a heavy handed way

Kate's Dad - > Quiet but aware, protective of loved ones, has a comforting nature

Kate's Friend-Girls - > Amy is true blue. The other friend is not as memorable.

About the Conflict: The conflict points in this story are mild to moderate in nature. All becomes clear as the story progresses.

About the Narration: This novel is narrated by Hayden Bishop. It was easy to listen to and get lost in the words...in a good way. I listening in one sitting, so that says something.

My Final Say: I enjoyed listening to this story. It was simple and straightforward. There was a touch of humor sprinkled in that added color to the underlying situations at hand. I walked away with a sense that the lead character came to a point of realization where she understood the value of being true to herself.

Other: I loved the community in this story. They had a heart for each other and were concerned for the well being of those who were associated with the business they were trying to save.

Rating: 4/5
Recommend: Yes
Audience: A
Status: Clean
Level: 👍🍬
Audiobook: Yes
Narration: +

Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Dreamscape Media), and to NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to listen to an ALC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. It was a pleasure to review. The words I have shared are my own.

*Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy of the ARC - this is my honest review*

This was so enjoyable. Slightly out of season for me (I’m taking a side quest from Spooky month here) but heartwarming and cosy all the same.

Kate, a London lawyer, heads to Boston very soon after her boyfriend proposes to sort out the terms of the will of the late Cora Moreau. Kate is definitely not running away from her sudden short engagement, rushed wedding planning timeline, and fiancé who’s starting to show his true colours. No, she’s just settling into small town Vermont in the lead up to Christmas with her new nemesis, Sam, whilst she sorts out the will.

Except why does staying feel right and why does Sam seem to get her heart racing more than her fiancé ever has?

I really related to Kate and the way she felt about marriage, kids, settling down and all the things Lance was starting to come out with. I felt that panic attack strongly and was borderline triggered by the way this book started. But that only made me root for her more and although it made Lance a bit of a movie villain, I think it would have been harder to root for Sam if he hadn’t.

I loved the one upmanship between Sam and Kate though I do think their romance could have been executed a bit better. I was happy with how it went though and as sad as I am to have had no spice with my Christmas romance, it wouldn’t have made sense for the story.

This is a cosy read, perfect for Hallmark Christmas romance lovers.

Snow Going Back is a decent read, though it didn’t leave as strong an impression as I hoped. The main character, Kate, is likable enough—passionate and determined in her efforts to settle the will of a company in a small town. Her dedication to the case and the people involved is clear, and while I didn’t find myself fully invested, I could appreciate her drive and focus throughout the story.

That said, I did find some aspects of the plot a bit frustrating. Specifically, Kate’s relationship with her new fiancé felt unrealistic at times. It's clear from early on that they’re not the right match, yet Kate keeps leading him on for much longer than necessary. This created a tension that felt more uncomfortable than compelling, especially when she seemed to know deep down they were wrong for each other. While I get that this could be a reflection of her own personal growth, it did make it hard to fully connect with her in those moments.

Additionally, I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of the "enemies to lovers" trope or the heavy use of miscommunication in romance stories, both of which were present here. These tropes can feel a bit forced and repetitive at times, and while Snow Going Back handled them better than most, they still weren’t my favorite elements of the book.

Overall, though, the story is still an enjoyable read with a lot of heart. If you're a fan of small-town romances, holiday reads, enemies to lovers, late stage miscommunication and character-driven narratives, Snow Going Back is worth checking out.

Thank you to Net Galley and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to read an e version.

DNF—Misleading Synopsis

I don’t know how this book has such a high rating. I was looking for a fun and cute Rom Com. I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but this book made me really frustrated, and I DNF’d at the 40% mark. I’m at a point where I just refuse to finish a book I don’t like because “maybe it will get better”.

The plot was driven by “romantic” tension between the female main character who is currently engaged to another man with the male main character who is NOT her fiance. The synopsis is misleading. It made it sound as though the female main character dealt with a broken engagement and later finds a love interest in an unexpected place. Which would have made for a cute story.

I don’t condone emotional infidelity and I just won’t finish reading a book that bases its entire plot on that. Couldn’t relate to the characters, and could not find humor after I realized it was heading toward infidelity. I’d give this a 0/5 if I could for the very misleading synopsis and the overall plot.

A fun enemies-to-lovers Christmas rom com that will have you cringing, giggling, tearing up and then laughing out loud! Kate is a people pleaser who is hard working, intelligent and has lost herself along the way. When she accidentally ends up engaged and feels like she is on a speeding train about to crash, work throws her a lifeline by sending her to the states to untangle a complicated will situation. Crash landing her into Sam's life and space. The house wars, will wars and emotional wars will have you laughing and crying with delight. The narrator does an outstanding job of bringing to life the characters, in particular Kate, and the emotions surrounding the events in the book. The question of whether Kate will make the correct decision in deciding the will as well as the rest of her life? The laughter will outweigh the tears, but you will need a tissue or two handy for this one!

This book caught me off guard (in a good way). At first, I thought I wasn't going to like it. In the beginning most of the characters acted jerks, and Kate was passively just going along with whatever was happening around her. BUT I kept reading. It turns out that all of this was just the setup for so much character growth as the story goes along, and most of the jerk-ish behavior was completely understandable once you got to know the characters and what they were going through. It was such a charming book, and I loved the backstories and growth that we got to see as the story unfolded. My one critique is that I wish I could have wanted to root for them sooner. I had to push through for a bit before I actually liked them, but once I did I was completely hooked.

Overall it's a very cute Christmas read!

ARC REVIEW: I read this book as an ARC and although it isn’t my typical read I surprisingly enjoyed it. It was a great break from my usual reads and a very heart warming story. It had all the great aspects of drama both personally and professionally to keep me interested and the enemies to lovers trope is always an enjoyable read for me. It also gave an empowering story of a woman who’s living her life for everyone but herself and finding herself along the way.

Snow Going Back while short was hilarious, I enjoyed the banter between Sam and Kate. They were constantly playing pranks on each other, which gave the story an entertaining element.

However, it wasn't very detailed or deep, which left it feeling semi basic. That being said, it was still a fun, simple holiday read!
