This novel was a big surprise to me! It was really enjoyable. Not a full five stars, but definitely more than 4, the journey of the characters deserves it. So, 4.5.
The English title of the novel is "The Consort is Both Charming and Scheming, Rising Through Palace Intrigue", and it's one of the negative points of the novel, because it will never help me find or remember which of the novels with just that setting this one is. I hope that this review will help me jog my memory one day.
Just as generic as the title, is the base setup of the novel: Our FL Ning Shuyan, the illegitimate daughter of mid tier noble is going to enter the palace as a concubine. She is not favored at home and not close to her legitimate parents or siblings. She is clearheaded (and a transmigrator) and knows that she cannot fall in love with the emperor. The Emperor, Xiao Yu, is young and handsome and accomplished - and he has both an empress with a good reputation as well as an established favorite consort.
Except for the names of the characters, there are at many, many stories with the same setup whose names I also cannot remember. Still, it's the details (and the quality of the translation by Xiaobai) that makes this story enjoyable, even if they don't stick out as that special at first.
For one, the FL was decreed as a concubine by the previous emperor - though only as a second choice, as the prince he originally wanted her to be a concubine for, refused. This is not exactly a point of pride for the ML, and it's something that the female lead has to overcome.
For another, we learn early that the FL is close to her concubine mother - and her mother does not disappear from the story and stays alive!
And there is more and the most remarkable was the presence of genuine female friendship. In an Imperial Harem novels. Yes, you read that right. They don't start out as friends, but they end up friends, though there sometimes are some issues, as is natural. And their friendship is for life. I love it.
The last thing that I want to point out is that the development of the feelings between the two leads is gradual. And yes, it is BETWEEN them. Both. He falls first and harder of course, but he is really sincere and it eventually moves her, even if it takes a long, long time. The emperor groveled his way into her heart and he's there to stay. And it's not just her struggling with these feelings. Due past experiences Xiao Yu, really doesn't think that an emperor falling in love is a good idea, so when he realized that he has... he is in denial for a while. Sometimes you (and the female lead) actually feel bad for him, because he treats her so well but she is not sincere. And that's what made it special. Of course it's stupid to fall in love with an emperor, but it's also human to end up being fond of someone who treats you well and makes you happy. Ning Shuyan struggles with this, even as she sticks to her decisions and that made her unusually likable for an imperial harem novel protagonist.
What stuck out as not so great...
If you feel that way to, maybe skip the last extra, even if it was otherwise fluffy.

10/30/24 - TBH I definitely started this thinking it was a romance ... but then kept reading it when the author was like "no it's not a romance it's a girl power novel" ... but then it was like the saddest girl power novel ever. And I kept hoping it'd get better but ... it didn't. TBH the "FL"/HEA was more FL's bestie ... who ... had a very minor role in all this.
I'm ... ugh... I'm not MAD I read it - but I am lowkey mad. Waste of time. No girl power rah rah - and I kept thinking "yeah the author DEFINITELY watched Zhen Huan while writing this... or just before ... during ... both ... "
I was glad to see a smart FL who didn't really have many golden fingers, but then ... I mean she didn't get STUPID stupid, but kinda. And clearly readers were annoyed which led to author scolding readers which I definitely didn't love- and bitch look, you wrote her stupid. You just wanted to drag out shit plot. Bleh.
Plus the WTF ending/extras. Would not recommend.
