Patterson continues his Jane Smith series with another exciting novel. And the same suspect, Rob Jacobson, is again accused of murdering yet another family. He was recently acquitted of the first murder charge largely due to Smith’s excellence as a defense attorney. Either he is guilty this time or someone who is very clever is setting him up. He does not lack for people that have a grudge against him.
There are other players involved, some are collateral damage and some are victims of a very dangerous man who likes cleaning up loose ends. And all this is taking place while Jane continues to fight terminal cancer.
There are no dull moments in this writing. It is just a good “who dunnit?” Characters are believable. Action is abundant, This is a nice, quick read with just enough suspense to keep the reader’s attention. Well written with an atomic ending.

James Patterson and Mike Lupica return with another of their Jane Smith series. Their collaborative efforts pay off and provide the reader with a strong legal thriller. The authors present Jane Smith for a third time time, a tough as nails attorney who is relentless in her efforts to defend her clients. When she is given a terminal brain cancer diagnosis, Jane must continue to handle this with her current case. Jane’s repeat client, Rob Jacobson, is in trouble with another multiple murder. He insists that he is innocent, but the evidence is quite damning. Jane works her magic, but remains realistic, hoping she can find the loophole that will protect her client. However, she must also ensure her health remains stable. Patterson and Lupica deliver another winner with this series.

Jane “Effin’” Smith is a cutthroat defense attorney with terminal brain cancer. She has not let that deter her from taking the tough cases. When Rob Jacobson, her repeated client, is arrested for murdering a family—while the ink on his acquittal for a triple homicide is still wet—Jane will have to pull out all the stops once more. The evidence is significant, so Rob will have to prove himself even more than before.

After a long chat with her client, Jane is sure that Rob has been framed, though she cannot simply hope for the best in this case. She will have to find a loophole to show that someone else committed the crime and sought to push the guilt on Rob.

While she faces a gritty DA in the largest and more complex case of her career, Jane must also handle the terminal brain tumour that rages inside her. Seeking the truth, Jane tries to defy the odds and ensure she lives long enough for another acquittal. Patterson and Lupica ensure their collaborative efforts are not lost.

I have read a number of legal thrillers by James Patterson, but it is his collaborative efforts with Mike Lupica that push it a level higher. The narrative offers a swift delivery, complemented by loads of action and the Patterson traditional short chapter recipe. All anspects of the story are effectively covered and gains speed as the story gets tense in the right spots. The characters, some of whom are back from the previous two, are both relatable and interesting. Jane Smith proves to be as tough as she presents once more, but her realism shines through. The twists and turns found within the book are both legal and personal. The authors keep things from getting too predictable, which helps keep the reader hooked. I wonder what’s next for Jane “Effin’” Smith and how the authors will tackle another legal situation.

Kudos, Messrs. Paterson and Lupica, for keeping things exciting once again!

4 Stars for The Hamptons Lawyer: Jane Smith, Book 3 (audiobook) by James Patterson and Mike Lupica read by Eva Kaminsky.

Just how many times is Jane Smith going to have to defend Rob Jacobson on double murder charges. She’s done it once before and now it looks he’s killed two more people. Surely he’s guilty of at least one of these murders. And the guy is an absolute creep. But could somebody really hate this guy to set him up for two different double murders? The only saving grace is that Jane will probably die from cancer before she can get this scum bag for a second time.

Gosh I love Jane effing Smith! What a badass this woman is. She is a tough defense lawyer in the Hampton with a perfect record, she has ever lost a trial. On top of a stressful job she has a terminal cancer diagnosis and is running out of time. She is constantly receiving treatments to help treat and slow the symptoms, leaving her drained and exhausted. Jane is determined that the cancer won’t stop her doing her job and pushes herself to the limits everytime.

This is the 3rd book in the series and she is defending the same man again, for a different crime. She detests Rob and for once she feels she might want to lose a case. While all of this is going on, bodies are dropping like flies and hitting close to home. There is always something happening, and with short chapters it is so hard to stop reading. James Patterson books are always so addictive .

I love the relationships that Jane has, with her boyfriend, her partner Jimmy me of course her dog, Rip. Anybody with a recuse dog is a good person to me.

James Patterson is one of my all time favourite authors, I have been reading his books since I was a teenager. There is no sign of his books slowing down, I still highly anticipate his new books, and love recommending them to my friends. I am always so happy when I get to read any of his books early, a big thank you to Little Brown Company for giving me the opportunity. This one is out in July but I couldn’t wait to dive in and find out what was going to happen to Jane. No spoilers, but I loved it.

And of course it's setting up for a 4th. If it weren't for Jimmy's character, I might have given up on this series. Jane effing Smith can be insufferable at times. The antagonists are all sleazy slimeballs. Meh. Definitely more of a 2.5 star but I did like that most of it was set in a courtroom.

The third Jane Smith novel in the series.
It’s well written.
Jane continues her battle with cancer.
Plus, she continues working hard as a criminal attorney.
Most of the supporting characters return from the previous novels in the series, along with a few more.

The book is well written by Mike Lupica.
I felt like I was there, in the court room, on the beach listening to the waves, etc.

I love that Jane is such a strong woman, especially when she shows her vulnerable side.

I hope this is a long series.

I definitely recommended Hamptons Lawyer!

Global best-selling author James Patterson teams up with legendary NYC Sportswriter and author Mike Lupica for the third novel in the unique and highly suspenseful Jane Smith thriller series entitled THE HAMPTONS LAWYER.

The title may be quite matter of fact, but the circumstances are not. Defense Attorney Jane Smith, resident of Long Island’s famous East End, has been fighting a mostly losing battle against cancer as she continues to deal with a large tumor in her neck and head. She realizes that she could very well die at any moment, yet she continues to throw herself into her cases. No case has confounded and challenged her more than her defense of Long Island rich bad boy, Rob Jacobsen.

Jacobsen had already been acquitted before with Jane’s help and now throughout this new novel is on trail once again for the murder of a family on Long Island. He swears he is being set up and the fact that he is in the pocket of infamous mob boss Sonny Blum, in much the same way that his father once was, does not make this an easy task for Jane. However, Jacobsen claims that Blum and his influential colleagues were setting him up to be the fall guy in this triple homicide of an innocent father, mother, and teen daughter. It is for this reason only that Jane Smith is continuing on as Jacobsen’s counsel, to see that justice is done for this family and that the actual killer or killers go down for it, even if it ends up being her own client.

Assisting Jane, as always, is Hamptons bar owner and ex-NYPD Detective Jimmy Cunniff. He has direct experience with Sonny Blum and his entire racketeering organization and provides much needed backup, security, and detecting aid to Jane. While she is mentally zoned into this case and also dealing with her losing battle against cancer, her boyfriend and veterinarian to her beloved dog Rip, Ben Kalinsky, proposes to her. Jane does not need to think too long about an answer as she gives him a firm no, indicating that a wedding needs to be a happy event not a sad one where everyone knows the bride has a short expiration date. Her doctor has put her on a new level of chemo treatment partnered with new meds. This and the fact that her once terminal friend, Fiona, had just beaten the dreaded disease provide Jane with some reason for hope. Unfortunately, she cannot feel the same way about the Jacobsen case, which was just complicated by the unexpected surprise that he hired a second chair for his defense in the form of Thomas McGoey --- a shady attorney whom Jane is sure is in the pocket of organized crime.

Another plot line adding more suspense and dread is the fact that a deadly hitman for the Blum family by the name of Roddy Sassoon is out there and waiting for the green light to take out both Jane and Jimmy. We get to witness a trail of bodies that have been left behind from his various hits and Sassoon indeed means business. One of the individuals who is in deep gambling debt to Sonny Blum ironically is Jane’s ex-husband who owns a popular East End restaurant. He reaches out to Jane for help after a visit from Mr. Sassoon, but she cuts him off, claiming the last time she paid his debts was the final time.

As the case begins to ramp up in intensity, with several verbal battles between Jane and her opponent from the prosecution, events outside of the courthouse continue to provide more reason for Jane to worry. This comes in the form of the unexpected deaths of several individuals either directly tied to the case or potential witnesses. Add to this fire the fact that Jimmy personally serves Sonny Blum a subpoena to also appear at this trail. This is a dangerous ploy which may very well come back to bite Jane and her defense strategy.

THE HAMPTONS LAWYER is a great summer beach read that is never predictable and hard to put down. On top of that, and in spite of the fact that Jane is gambling with the Grim Reaper, the novel ends with a terrific cliffhanger which will hopefully open the door to a fourth installment in this engaging series.

“The Hampton’s Laywer” is the third book in the James Patterson -Mike Lupica “Jane Smith Thriller” series featuring their anti-establishment hero, defense attorney, Jane Smith. And yes, that appears to be her real name.

“The Hampton’s Lawyer’ continues Jane’s story and starts up right where the last book – “Hard to Kill” left off, and continues what is basically one large ongoing legal thriller and overly dramatic soap opera. These are not separate books, just one story that is being published in individual 400-page increments. Each book ends with a shocking murder that just leads into the next one. I was thinking that this would be a 4-book series, but now my guess is it could be somewhere between 4 – 6 books in length. I googled it, but there is no clear available or available answer.

When “The Hampton’s Lawyer” begins, Jane is preparing to defend her lying and cheating client, Rob Jacobson, who is charged with killing a family of three for the second time. This time his DNA is found at the scene and his situation is worse than the first time Jane helped him avoid a long-term prison sentence.

At the same time, Jane continues battling her own problems. Serious medical problems involving her own fight with stage 4 cancer that’s currently winning. She’s 8 months into an estimated life expectancy of approximately 12 months. Even with support from her best friend and personal doctor, Samantha Wylie, her boyfriend and love of her life, Ben Kalinsky, and Jimmy Cunniff, her investigation partner, ex-NYPD police detective, and local bar owner, she is not doing well. Things are so bad that her doctors want her to try an experimental drug that may very likely be her last chance at survival…

Jane is facing the biggest challenges in her life – trying to stay alive long enough to figure out who is trying so hard to frame her client and put him away for the rest of his life. A client who keeps making things worse for her defense and has even involved the local mafia leader who is warning Jane to keep him out of things, or he will eliminate her. And the new drugs are wreaking havoc on her body, keeping her from doing what she needs to do to be effective.

Jane’s biggest fear is that this will be here her last time in court…

After finishing this book, I felt a lot of the same things that I did after the last one in this ongoing, never-ending story.

First, the good stuff. Thie strength of this series comes from its heavy character driven story. Other than his big three series – Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, and the Women’s Murder Club – I don’t usually think of James Patterson as a strong writer of character. In this one, he has created another strong, yet empathetic lead that grabs my heart and pulls on it with a tight grip. Jane Smith takes center stage and is in almost every scene that takes place. Although there are selected chapters told from Jimmy’s point-of-view (and I really enjoyed them), Jane carries the weight of the overall story, pacing, and ambience. Don’t get me wrong. For the most part, it works. It works very well. I found myself fully immersed emotionally in these books as Jane dealt with her professional challenges and personal medical issues.

Jane is what makes this work. She is an unfiltered, stimulating character. Unfiltered. Outspoken. Flawed. Emotional. Stubborn. Underdog. Brilliant. And someone you cheer for. There were even moments in this one when Jane was struggling, I was really starting to feel the reality of her illness hit me. Hopefully, Patterson and Lupica will not take any cheap ways out in dealing with the outcomes when dealing with her serious medical issues. They have a chance of delivering on the promise of her being one of Patterson’s greatest characters.

For me, the secret sauce is Jane’s personal life and professional relationships. How she relates to others. Protects them and at the same time keeps secrets. Goes out of her way to anger others by her flippant and disrespectful attitude yet sacrifices for others in ways they’ll never know and understand. She’s selfish, yet serving, but mostly on her terms. These facets of her character, her strengths balanced by her weaknesses are compelling to us. We all want to be like Jane and say whatever we want, regardless of social expectations, but her facing death allows her the unique freedom to let her inside voice out. Shout it out loud.

As for the things I didn’t like, the primary one was the overall storylines involving Jane’s scum bucket client, Rob Jacobson. Although this was an enjoyable, escapist read, it was heavy on style and delivery, and repeated plot development of a second triple homicide (as if one triple homicide wasn’t enough). We continue with the storylines of bad cops, mobsters, and people with political and financial power (the usual in Patterson books). For me, it got fairly convoluted. Lots of characters. Several cops. A few mobsters and an interesting hit man. It wasn’t terribly too hard to follow, but it didn’t really propel the overall storylines forward as much as it felt repetitive. As a matter of fact, Jane’s personal battle with cancer was more compelling than the courtroom drama in this one (at least it was for me). And of course, right at the end, when it looked like you were going to get some closure on outstanding issues, nope, you get another shocking murder that will involve Jane again in the next book… For me, that was a bit of contrived overkill.

Overall, compelling characters, especially Jane, made this a fast-paced entertaining read. However, what started out as potential plot development kind of whimpered out in the end and will carry on repetitive plotting into the next entry in the Jane Smith series. I can’t help being left with the feeling that Patterson (and Lupica) are going to milk this as long as they can. To be honest, part of me appreciates that, but the other part is still struggling with the pacing and dying creativity of the legal plotlines.

The good news is that isn’t stopping me from reading Jane Smith, but the rope is definitely getting shorter. You can make your own call...

3.5 out of 5 stars (and yes, Goodreads doesn't round off).

"Never Say Die." This is the third installment of the Jane Smith Series, by James Patterson, coauthored by Mike Lupica.
A great story, good suspense. I was recommended this series by the staff of James Patterson. We had visited about some of the others, but I'd not heard of this one. So far, so good.

Once again, evil doer Rob Jacobsen. Amazingly enough, he was acquitted after his last case, where three people were murdered. HE's BACK! And once again, he is charged with killing a family. The evidence against him is even more compelling. He say's he is being framed. Strange as it may seem, Jane believes him. She faces the most difficult case of her career, and like a double whammy, she has a tumor at the base of her neck, that is Stage 4 terminal cancer. I, myself, am a 3-time cancer survivor, and all the treatments, testing, etc. are very familiar to me. Miracles do exist. Treatments continue, but she feels like crap.

On the side of her case, Jane has had a long visit with Jacobsen, she knows that she will have to find something somewhere that will acquit him once again. She aims very high to accomplish this.

The story can run slow in some places. One person said, "Either he is guilty this time or someone who is very clever is setting him up." He is not Mr. Popular, many folks begrudge him greatly. Jane's treatments continue, and trial prep continues. I'm close to Spoilerville. The rest of the story really holds our attention. Instead of giving this book 4.5 stars, I'm giving it a 4.0 due to foul language in the book. Totally unnecessary. Enjoy and recommend except for bad language.
4 Stars****
NOTE: My library posted a note that the next book will be out in May 2026! Looking forward to it!

Stale Series

I rated the first Jane Smith thriller a 5-star, the second a 3-star, and this latest installment a 3-star. The only thing keeping my rating from being a 2-star is that it's an easy read. The same scumbag client for all 3 books and over 1000 pages became very monotonous. It is just not believable that someone who has been targeted for assassination as many times as our protagonist would enter a murder house without protection or escorts - a real person just wouldn't do that but a novel looking for cheap thrills can. Found myself not really caring about Jane's plight or whether she gets the total scumbag off to continue her perfect streak of murder cases.

3.5 / 5.0

I like the gritty sheer determination of Jane Smith, I love the character how she shines through in the pages but what I don’t like is when loose leads solve themselves so convincingly it’s too good and they tie up too soon then expected. It’s giving cliche with this book. I was annoyed that I’ve read the third book in this series with the same guy on trial again after the first two. But what I am happy about is reading and following the journey of Jane Effing smith.
This time we truly see Jane fight through everything in this book quite literally, it’s heart wrenching at time.

I do like how each character in this book has their own personality shine through. No one is boring and everyone has a story to share. But what I don’t like is reading the same guy on trial 3 times and its the same unlikeable corny misogynistic dude. It’s getting a tad boring, but I am hoping that we don’t see this dude again because this time round it was borderline unbearable. Again we see Jane smith in court defending this same dude, and pulling out all the stops to prove his innocence. It has you questioning your morals at points and respect the role of barristers even more.

I’m only in this series for Jane smith, her cute dog Rip and her relationship with Dr Ben Kalinsky!

This novel was very good and kept my interest but there was also a lot of sadness that perhaps helped me to have empathy for the main character, Jane Smith. But I would just as soon not had the health issues involved for Jane and her mother, sister, and English friend. I would have preferred just dealing with the plot of Jane, a defense attorney on Long Island defending a despicable man who she believes to be innocent of the crime of murder she is representing him for.

This series keeps getting more boring. I like #1 and it kept moving along with new characters and twists and turns. This book is #2 revisited. Same characters.....very predictable. Cancer continues for Jane and Bridget. Attempted killings, again. Too much the same. Not worth it until the last 100 pages. Probably will not read #4.

The Hamptons on Long Island is known for its beautiful beaches, its luxury lifestyle—and its exclusive legal advice.
When Jane Smith takes on a famous celebrity client, she’s armed and with brilliant arguments, hard evidence—and two Glocks.
Yet she’s chased down, shot at, and risks contempt of court. That’s when mounting a legal defense turns into self-defense.
Knowing every day in court could be her last, she’s a survivor. For now.

Hamptons defense attorney Jane Smith gets the cases that others consider impossible to win, but she is not to be deterred. Facing down enemies is what she is used to doing, especially since she is battling cancer that seems to have a tenacious hold on her life. In the court case this time, she is once again defending Rob Jacobsen, a former client who just refuses to let her say “no” when he is again on trial for murder. She uses former police detective Jimmy Cuniff to do her investigative work but is not above doing some of the footwork herself. With her handy Glock and her determined spirit of finding out the truth, Jane follows clues no matter where they might lead her and what trouble she might get into following them. I really liked the courtroom antics in this book and the way the prosecutor Katherine Welsh seemed to have a case that was a slam dunk. Jane’s search for the truth leads her and Jimmy into danger and into the dangerous world of gambling, where she discovers all is not as it appears on the surface. I also enjoyed the characters who are dynamically portrayed, with realism, tongue-in-cheek dialogue and a healthy respect for each other. The drama surrounding Jane’s cancer was heartbreaking at times, a battle that she has to face alone in spite of the support of her lover and her friends as well as her doctors. This was a complicated and fast-moving legal drama combined with a whodunit mystery. Both were compelling and offered relentless tension as well as skillful misdirection to keep me guessing. I was intrigued by the mystery and thought that this page-turner was cleverly written and satisfying to me as an armchair detective. With great and sometimes amusing chemistry between the characters, this novel was an entertaining and well-crafted courtroom drama that kept me reading long into the night.

Really loving this series only 3 books so far. I do like how James Patterson and Mike Lupica write together the story flows and keeps me turning pages to see what happens next.

This book wraps up Jane's case defending a celebrity client she doesn't like nor respect but fights for justice to be served. Running parallel to fighting crime and winning cases Jane is fighting her own cancer battle. Love how this book wrapped up with good news, bad news and just a hint of more books to come - highly recomend, you may want to read the first in the series to lay the character backgrounds though it won't be hard to catch up :)

Book 3 in the Jane Smith series. Jane is once again defending Ron Jacobson for the murders of three people. Did he actually do it or was he set up. In addition, Jane is undergoing treatment for cancer and she is having a difficult time time staying focused. She now has a second chair the Ron Jacobson has hired in case she can’t continue to defend him not only because of her cancer, but because a mob boss has threatened to kill her. Jane continues to persevere. Fortunately, Jane has her investigator/friend, Jimmy by her side as well as her boyfriend, Ben. Good read with plenty of courtroom drama.

Mike has written an excellent book 3 with our heroine, Attorney Jane Smith. In all honesty, I have yet to read books 1 or 2. I didn't know they existed until I started on book 3. As you would expect, there's a big twist at the end, only this book has two, although some might say there are three.
The chapters are short, the book has 380 pages with over 100 chapters. If you're constantly interrupted (like I am), the book can be put down and picked back up without rereading pages to get recentered. I've enjoyed Lupica's ghostwritten books for Robert Parker's series of books, along with his own sports-related books. This could be why New York sports teams are also a topic of conversation in "The Hampton Lawyer" book from James Patterson.

I just want to say James and Mike you have spoiled us again. This book and these characters.. Love or hate them but man they are entertaining. How Jane can get herself into this mess with Rob and defend him again. This book picks up where the second book left off. And I love that, none of this oh so we have to go way back and find out about such and such. Nope none of that.

I love Jane's sparky comments overall and I feel that she is just the same as the first book. Although in this one I love how she is starting to really think about Ben the vet doctor.
Jimmy is still the no nonsense guy that hates Rob and is willing to prove he isn't innocent first. Where Jane is like my client is innocent.
More answers in this book with the first family being murdered and also the second. We get a feel for Jane and how she feels about her sister and Rob again.
Rob is still the I can't stand you guy throughout this whole book. He is just one of those people that you know isn't going to redeem himself no matter the small things he does do. Pick this book up now and the first two in this series. You will not be disappointed. Well maybe a little bit when it ends on a cliffhanger and you are like I so love this but I want the next one now.

Jane "Effing" Smith and her investigator Jimmy Cuniff are back, taking on the impossible once more, as Jane continues her fight against cancer, and the client from earlier in the series, the unlikable and affluent bon vivant Rob Jacobson, who is once again accused of murdering another family. With Mike Lupica's knack for crafting vibrant characters, delivering sharp and engaging dialogue, blending Mob hitmen and the stunning Hamptons backdrop, this series continues to be a winner. Absolutely love it!

The Hamptons Lawyer by James Patterson and Mike Lupica is part of the Jane Smith Thriller Series. This book was suspenseful and entertaining, but not my favorite in the series. The best part of the story was the ending when Jane Smith was told she was cancer free. I think it’s time to move on from this series. I am a huge fan of Mr. Pattersons books, but this one fell a little short and I rated it a three.

Good read. I like an ongoing series because you get to know the characters very well. Jane Smith is a scrapper and her friend Jimmy would do anything She asked. Defending a low life for the second time, is a challenge. Nobody wants her to take on. But she does.

I loved the feisty main character ( Jane Smith).
Dealing with cancer, while defending an indefensible‘bad guy’- she goes to Switzerland for treatments. Back home- totally independent with brains and a very smart mouth.
I really hope this 3rd book is not the end of the series.
