Life can be a complex maze, and friendships can change like the wind, but neighbours remain a constant presence—always just on the other side of the fence. They witness the highs and lows of your life, the moments of joy and sorrow, and perhaps even a few secrets you thought were safe. Or are they? How well do we know our neighbours and what deep, dark secrets they may hide behind closed doors?
Enter Jill and Wendy, two neighbours who have navigated the twists and turns of life together since their early married days. Late-night porch conversations over a bottle of wine provided them with a refuge while their children slept peacefully. They shared dreams, laughter, and whispers of their deepest secrets—until those secrets unravelled.
It was my second experience with Sue Watson's captivating storytelling; my first was "You, Me, Her." This particular novel caught my attention. Something about stories rooted in domestic life draws me in, teetering on the delicate edge between what is and what could be. The characters are so relatable that they seem to leap off the page, with their complexities unravelling in ways that tug at your heartstrings. I genuinely couldn't put this book down! I devoured it in one exhilarating sitting, staying up until the early morning hours. Sue Watson has a remarkable gift for misleading you, pulling the rug out from under your feet, and leaving you on the edge of your seat with your jaw dropped. It makes you rethink everything you've just read! If you haven’t picked up any of Sue Watson's books yet, I highly recommend starting with "Wife, Mother, Liar." You certainly won't be disappointed. Thank you to Bookouture for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. Every opinion expressed here is my own. Mark your calendars: "Wife, Mother, Liar" will be released in Canada and the USA on January 10, 2025!
Whew! Give me a second while I collect myself after reading this gripping, shocking, doozy of a book! Holy Cow! Wife, Mother, Liar almost gave me whiplash at the end! Seriously, I did not see that coming at all! What a wild ride full of secrets, lies, accusations, and twists! My head is still spinning from this roller coaster ride!
Jill and Wendy have been friends and neighbors for a long time. They have shared meals, shared confidences, and watched their children go from babies to teenagers. They have had many good times together until one heartbreaking night when their children went to prom together and only one came home alive. No parent wants to bury their child. No parent wants to have their child be questioned. Tragedy affects relationships and in Wife, Mother, Liar, Jill and Wendy have decided to get together for another girls weekend.
This is the 8th book that I have read by Sue Watson! I know I can always count on her to deliver clever, well thought out, riveting, and twisted psychological thrillers. She delivered yet again with Wife, Mother, Liar! Just when I thought I had a handle on things and knew how things were going to turn out, she blind sighted me with another mind blowing and shocking twist.
I loved the drama, the tension, the hostility, the grudges, and the secrets! I also enjoyed how both women were presented. I could not help but feel for the mother who lost her child and still hoped to get answers. At the same time, I felt for the mother who was protecting her child from finger pointing. This book was like being on a child's teeter totter at times and on a roller coaster at other times.
Then there is the shock factor. I was shocked more than once while reading this book. I couldn't help but think: "how very clever of you, Sue Watson!" Fans of psychological thrillers will enjoy this book. I felt a bevy of emotions while reading this book. I love it when a book causes me to feel and to think. This did both. Mainly, it entertained, left my jaw hanging open, and kept my finger turning the pages.
I can't wait to read what Sue Watson writes next!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Yes! I loved every minute of this twisted, clever story of secrets and deception. This thriller shows that those closest to you may also be deadly and dangerous. As with all of Sue Watson’s thrillers, this latest creation is full of twists and jaw-dropping turns that are shocking and mind-blowing. The plot is emotional and heartbreaking while also being full of unexpected moments that are unpredictable and surprising. The final twist was unanticipated and satisfying. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
A good read from this author is guaranteed……..this book takes the idea of neighbourly best friends with all it’s good things and turns it 360 degrees and shows what can happen when all is not as it seems and years of grudging resentment build up………when the 2 neighbours re unite for a girly weekend in Wales both are there for very different reasons…….
For me the 2nd part of the book came into it’s own when without giving anything away the conversation between them was taken to anew level.it was really well done and spiked the tension especially as it evolved
A lot of history for the pair that we get to unwrap and slowly work out why they are in the predicament they are……and of course there is one very big unresolved issue that will not go away
It’s hard not to say too much but it is a great look at friendships that go wrong and even though the pretence is kept up the truth will out
I’ve just this minute finished this super twisted tale, so many red herrings an so many layers to reveal I have been totally observed within its pages. I’ve read a few Sue Watson books and I now have her on my auto click to buy I don’t care what she witters I’m reading it! The dynamics of two families here intertwined was totally riveting would I have guessed any of the reveals most probably not. Exciting read and stood up to the genre Thriller without fail in my opinion. Perfectly written perfect in timing and reveals. Onion thrillers are one of the best layer after layer!
Jill’s husband Tim has always been a serial cheater, and he’s now leaving Jill for woman named Angela. Jill’s whole life is full of loss - her parents are gone, she’s had several miscarriages, and her miracle son Leo is dead. With Tim leaving her too, she decides to get out of town.
Her best friend and neighbor Wendy is also having problems in her marriage with Robert, so they rent cottage in Wales while Tim is moving out of their house. Long story short, secrets come out during their trip that threaten to destroy both women.
The synopsis is vague for a reason - there wasn’t much of a plot until the end. I kept waiting for the thing that had other reviewers giving this five stars, and there was a surprise in the end, but by then I was already over the story and it didn’t seem very shocking. I’ve seen some really good reviews for this book, but unfortunately, this story didn’t grip me the way it seems to have for other readers. The writing was good, but the story itself needed more. More excitement, more buildup, more explanations…all would have been good, but as the book stands, it wasn’t one that I particularly loved. Three stars.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Sue Watson and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on January 10, 2025.)
What a twisty read this was! The plot was so cleverly written it had me on my toes the entire time.
When a mother is grieving the loss of her child she will go to whatever lengths she needs to, to find out what really happened in her child’s final moments of life.
Told from two different perspectives and points of view find out what happened when two young teens go to their prom together but only one makes it home.
I went in pretty blindly to this book and I recommend that you do too. I love this author’s writing she always knows how to *mic drop* a twist here and there throughout all of her books!
This book publishes this week on Friday, January 10th! Be sure to check it out and add it to your tbr!
Many thanks to NetGalley , Sue Watson, and Bookouture for the early release of this suspenseful page turner! All opinions are my own.
This was a quick read that I finished in less than a day, though I had mixed feelings about the story. It centers on Jill and Wendy, who were best friends for decades when a tragedy involving their children tears them apart. Jill plans a girls weekend in the remote Welsh countryside where they end up rehashing old secrets and jealousies.
I really didn’t like Jill but I thought the author expected the reader to empathize with her. I thought she was petty and annoying. While I did like Wendy better, I thought that her reaction to the creepy landlord was way over the top. This being said, I appreciated the alternating POVs and the overall quick pacing of the story. I figured out the big twists but I do think it was well done, and felt overall that the turn of events was just sad. I thought the ending tied up the story well.
Overall, while this wasn’t my favorite, I did enjoy it and felt it was a fast paced read. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sue Watson's "Wife, Mother, Liar" is a gripping and captivating book that I could not put down. Lots of twists and turns that were very unexpected, keeping me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The characters are complex and incredibly well-developed, each with their own secrets and motivations. Watson masterfully explores themes of marriage, motherhood, and the lies we tell ourselves and others. I loved the way the story slowly unravels, revealing layer upon layer of deceit. Thanks to NetGalley for this advance copy in exchange for my honest review. This is my last book of 2024 and it was fantastic! To be published January 10, 2025.
I haven't been reading very many thrillers lately, but this book has made me want to change that. I loved the way that this story is told from alternating perspectives. It truly kept me guessing. There were a couple of things I was able to figure out and others that left me puzzled. Most of the time, I didn't know who was lying and who deserved my empathy. Truthfully, I was skeptical of all the characters at one point or another.
The ending wrapped the story up nicely and answered all the questions. Definitely goes to show you need to be very careful who you let into your life. Even those closest to you are capable of hurting you.
I'll definitely be checking out some more Sue Watson titles. Thanks to bookouture for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review.
A fun, twisty read! I enjoyed trying to figure out what exactly happened to Jill’s son, Leo, and how all the characters in the book fit into whatever it was that happened.
I didn’t expect the actual twist to be what it was, it was a great surprise! I did feel like the book kind of lacked some direction and felt like it dragged a bit.
Overall a good read! Worthy of a recommendation to thriller and suspense readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Wife, Mother, Liar by Sue Watson Genre: Mystery, thriller Expected publication date: 10th January 2025
Let me start off by saying this is the first book I've read by this author but won't be the last for sure! This was one heck of a wild read I LOVED IT! The plot twists were twisting to say the least! The story evolves around two best friends Jill and Wendy their friendship takes a 360 turn when prom night for their kids is supposed to be the best night of their lives ends up being the start of a never ending nightmare with the death of Jill's son Leo! I love a messy thriller with unhinged characters, I was hooked from the first page! I didn't see that ending coming! Highly recommend!
Book slump is officially over thanks to Sue Watson. Wife Mom, Liar was a one gulp read. I literally could not put it down.
The story begins with two best friend neighbors raising their children together until one of the kids ends up dead and the friendship is destroyed as one mom searches for the truth over what happened. At least that’s what I thought it was about. Then I kept reading.
This twisty novel kept zigging when I thought it would zag. It was a roller coaster with no breaks. The tension never let up.
Stylistically my favorite part was how each chapter ended. The last sentence compelled me to keep turning the pages- there were some jaw dropping cliffhangers.
Fans of an unreliable narrator and frenemies will love this psychological thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy
The premise of Wife, Mother, Liar is decent, but the book violates the "show don't tell" throughout. The entire book consists of the characters - who are all extremely unlikable - telling long monologues to each other. And that is how we learn about every single thing that happens. There is very little action, but lots of exposition. I might have tolerated that better if there was someone to root for, but every person was despicable, even the one you want to sympathize with. There are some surprises at the end but those didn't really add to the story. This just wasn't for me.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this book in exchange for my honest review.
The title of this book is so apt as it explores the lengths a mother will go to protect her family.
Centred around two friends Wendy and Jill. One is holding a deep secret and the other is determined to find answers to the unexpected tragedy she has encountered.
Told from their two perspectives , truths, lies and secrets are slowly revealed which had me guessing and second guessing throughout.
I found the first half of the book a bit repetitive but as the storyline progressed I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see how it would end.
Full of suspense this book covers a lot of difficult subjects , grief , loss , lies, family , relationships and secrets are all explored throughout the story .
An enjoyable read for me which was twisty and emotional with a twist I didn’t see coming. One any thriller reader will enjoy .

This is my review of Wife, Mother, Liar.
This is the story of friendship that turns bad, lies and murder.
Jill’s best friend, Wendy lived next door. Both of them got pregnant at the same time, and they shared everything together. Jill had tried so hard to have a baby.
Jill was married to Tim who was unfaithful, but Jill just turned a blind eye as she just wanted a family…and then she was blessed with Leo a son, who she treasured and protect with all her love. Jill chose to ignore her husband’s late-night phone calls and wandering eye, because she got her son.
Wendy, a midwife, worked and already had two sons, Josh and Freddie, was married to a doctor, Robert, who worked around the world in war zones. Now she was blessed with a daughter, Olivia.
Years later Leo takes Olivia to the prom…but Jill is uncomfortable with her son getting too close to Olivia, as Leo was quiet and sheltered while Olivia was a wild free spirit.
Hours later, Leo was upset and left Olivia at the prom and was later found dead, with a head wound down by the river.
Jill believes it was murder…lies…her best friend is hiding something. It started with a lie and it ended with murder.
Lots of tension and suspense to keep the reader involved. Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for my digital copy.
Yes!! 5 stars!! Ehat a book, twists, great story great characters, hard to say anything but great thing about this book. I devoured it!!! Sad I sailed through it and it's over though Sue Watson is one of my favorite authors.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
The first half of the book is the two friends taking turns lying to each other. It made me wonder how they had ever been friends. The last half was three characters talking at us to wrap up the story. It was not enjoyable.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with this arc!
Wife, Mother, Liar by Sue Watson is a psychological thriller novel set in the UK. We have a dual POV following Wendy and Jill, two next door neighbors, who seemingly both have life figured out. From the white picket fence houses, to the most hansome husbands and smartest children, Wendy and Jill seem to have it all. Until one day, their kids go to prom and only one of them comes back home.
The setting of the book is tense and suspenseful from the get go and it had me hooked for hours. The mystery surrounding the abrupt death of one of the teenagers is well written and the author hints from the beginning that it wasn't just an accident. The idea was interesting and the start and middle of the book were gripping too, but in my opinion, as shocking and unexpected the plot twist was, I just didn't care enough at the end since it dragged out too much. About the characters, I think they were well-crafted, but nothing out of the ordinary for a thriller novel. Without spoiling too much, our protagonist Jill does something at the end of the book that, in my opinion, isn't handled well (or at all for that matter) and makes you think you believe she is right, when in reality I believe all of our characters are quite nuanced and none of them are truly good people. Except Tim. He is just evil and I don't like him at all.
Wendy Jones, our second protagonist, deserves a few sentences of her own, because she was the most interesting out of the whole crew. She is described as beautiful, cunning, and a bit superficial. She loves her children fiercely and when Jill invites her to spend a weekend at a cottage in Wales, she instantly accepts, even though they haven't been in touch for months because she misses her friend. I think her character is very raw and real and I personally understand all of her choices throughout the book and why she makes them.
On a more positive note, Sue Watson's writing is quick, sharp and easily digestible, which reminded me of Freida McFadden's novels, so for any fans of hers, I believe Wife, Mother, Liar will be thrill to read! The plot twists at the end were one of the only ones I couldn't have predicted at all, and I have been reading a lot of thrillers recently
This was in of the most twisty books I have read in a long time. I loved how there was so many turns I was getting whip lash.
The way it was written back and fourth between Jill and Wendy was perfection. This book held my interest through every chapter. I absolutely would have read this in one sitting if I had the time to do so. Every time I got off work I keep picking it back up excited to see what would happen next.
The way the author wrapped this up at the end made sense and kinda of gave some closure. I will 100 percent read more from Sue Watson.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wendy and Jill are neighbors, best friends. They spend a lot time together along with their families. What could go wrong? Both are hiding secrets … how far will they go to find the truth and protect their own?
Wife Mother Liar helped me reclaim my love of the psychological thriller. This book is filled with so many ups, downs, twists and turns one could get vertigo. It had a little of a slow start for me, alternating chapters with each women's voice. One mom was more of a helicopter parent, one more lenient; more understandable as their back stories come to light. BUT, once it took off, I found it hard to put down. I never saw the twists coming, especially the unexpected ending. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Watson has up her sleeve next. I need to delve into her previous books!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.
Jill has had a life full of loss-she's lost both her parents, had several miscarriages and her husband is a serial cheater. Now that her husband is finally leaving her for someone else, she decides to leave town. Her best friend and neighbor. Wendy. is also having relationship trouble, so she decides to ask Wendy to come with her to escape to Wales for the weekend. But while they're away, secrets come to light that threaten to destroy both of the women. While there was a lot of "telling" there wasn't a lot of "showing" until about 75% into the story. I could have used a little more excitement-after all both these women had a lot of stuff to deal with and a history between them, but most of the story was them talking about each other and to each other. Once the action got going, it was quick page turning to see what was going to happen. It's told from their alternating POV and the ending tied up the story well. Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and Bookouture for this eArc in exchange for my review.
Ok, so somehow, somewhere along the way there must have been an alien abduction and Sue Watson was replaced by a double. Her older books were much, much better. This one is a glitch. The writing is stiff, basic and dull. The characters are paper-thin. The twists are non existent and the ending is plain silly. The book is very short, but absolutely not sweet. A huge disappointment.
"Wife, Mother, Liar" by Sue Watson is a 4-star read! Jill and Wendy have been friends for 25 years—until tragedy strikes while their kids are at prom. In an effort to resolve their disagreement about that fateful night, Jill invites Wendy on a weekend getaway to a secluded Welsh cottage.
The story unfolds through alternating perspectives from Jill and Wendy. While the plot lacks much physical action—most of it revolves around the women’s conversations in the cottage—their dialogue and memories effectively reveal their backstories. This narrative style allows readers to deeply understand both women as mothers and wives.
Jill is an incredibly unlikable character, which makes it difficult to sympathize with her. However, the book is packed with twists, as nearly every character harbors a secret. These revelations are revealed in the final chapters, with one kept under wraps until the epilogue.
Although the first part of the book feels slow, I enjoyed the story overall and look forward to reading more from Sue Watson.
Thanks to Bookouture, Sue Watson, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
This book was a mixture of emotions for me. I didn’t really see why Wendy or Jill were friends with each other as their past stories, so intertwined, are revealed. They really did live in a communally carnal neighborhood. I figured out part of the big secret but not all of it. One of the best parts was when Jill was incoherent and thinking snarky answers to those who were confessing to her since they thought she was a goner. I actually laughed at some of her retorts. The ending was good and, although ethically it’s wrong, I cheered Jill’s actions. Watson walloped me with this one! Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early copy.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Two women. Two families. Multiple lives that become so intertwined, it's difficult to tell who to believe when the truth, lies, and secrets come out.
Jill and Wendy have been friends for years, and being neighbors, they thought they had it all, even with having babies close in age together where they can all grow up together. But one fateful night, a life ended, and their lives turn upside down.
Told from two perspectives, the truth, lies, and secrets are revealed with each chapter and as much of a slow burner as this was, once some of the secrets were revealed, I was glued to the pages. While the twists weren't as shocking, they fit the narrative of the book and kept the suspense and drams factor going. There aren't any characters here that are relatable or loveable, but their faults suit their personalities. I think the author captured the characters and wrote them so that you see them for what they are in the end.
Overall, I enjoyed the writing and the story. I'll have to read more from this author!
Big thanks to Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Wife, Mother, Liar is the latest thrilling thriller from Sue Watson, the popular UK author. A complex domestic drama that weaves together melodrama with mystery and danger. Jill and Wendy are neighbours and have been best friends for decades. But an unfortunate tragic incident puts them at war. Their battle is sustained with secrets, lies and deception as it flames the fire. A weekend away is fraught with surprises until the ultimate climax. I thought this was a clever read, taking two characters and making them at odds, growing the tension and building the plot on just them and a few minor characters. Backstabbing, deceit, jealousy, adultery is just the icing on the cake. It will keep you engaged and hooked til the very end.
I chose to read this psychological thriller without reading the blurb because Sue Watson has always ticked all the boxes for a brilliant read.
Wife, Mother, Liar is an expertly written gripping read. Told by two women, Jill and Wendy, each in alternating chapters. Neighbours who become friends along with their husbands. Over the years, they become closer than maybe they would prefer, when their children start a romantic relationship. That is until the bond is broken without warning.
This story is so full of tension that ramps up by the page. I couldn't stop attempting to guess. I never got anywhere, though, as the twists and turns never stopped. Each moment I thought something, a different bit of information popped up. Sue Watson is certainly an author to keep an eye on!
The characters are well created. I can't say I took to them all, but I also think they aren't meant to be truly likeable. They are more real, with the flaws that people have. It made for another quality book from Sue Watson. I really do recommend Wife, Mother, Liar for anyone who likes a great psychological thriller.
Thanks to Bookouture Books and NetGalley for my gifted ebook to write my honest review.
