Welzl revealed the cruel terrain and colorful tales of Eskimos, which few had encountered before he did, stories which some later claimed could not have been true. Long before Jon Krakauer did it, Jan Welzl brought American readers to the wild and wooly hinterlands, and lived to tell the tale (until he died in 1948).

A great book with no exaggerations - told like it is. If you can forgive a dry way of telling the story, the truth in it will tickle your imagination more than any fiction. What changes is a man prepared to make in order to live his life fully? A must read for anyone who loves itineraries.

Jan Eskymo Welzl nebyl jen cestovatel, ale také bájivý vypravěč a mytoman. V knize nacházíme fascinující směs reálných zážitků z různých koutů Arktidy a nespoutané fabulace. Platí zde jednoduché pravidlo: většinu čísel dělte deseti, příběhy minimálně dvěma. U pasáží o „ďáblově rybě“, ňadrech plných mléka u osmiletých dívek, lovu na 86. rovnoběžce nebo drastické polární spravedlnosti se lze v lepším případě jen shovívavě usmívat.

Přesto je kniha Třicet let na zlatém severu skvělá. Je to strhující jízda "barona Prášila" z Moravy. Pokud milujete Járu Cimrmana nebo Hrabalovy pábitele, budete milovat i Welzla. A pro střízlivý pohled na reálný život tohoto cestovatele si bokem otevřete třeba knihu Martina Strouhala Svoboda pod bodem mrazu.

Po dvou měsících konečně dočteno. A názor? Povídání o Aljašce bylo zajímavěji napsané, než druhá část. Právě v té druhé bylo i dost krutosti a násilí, myslím, že jsem nepotřebovala vědět, jak se zabíjí medvěd, mroži nebo velryby a ani jak soudili zločince. Přesto však má Jan Eskymo Welzl u mě velký palec nahoru - strávit třicet let na dalekém severu, bojovat nebo být v souladu s přírodními podmínkami, to che opravdu kus odvahu a mít srdce dobrodruha.
