After a whirlwind courtship and elopement, Lady Alexandra Marshall watched helplessly as her husband was shipped off by her irate father. An annulment followed, and though Alexandra waited with packed bags, Christopher never returned for her. She has tried desperately to forget the only love she's ever known and now devotes herself to the British Museum...until she discovers that someone has pilfered a fortune in jewels.

His scandalous marriage to Alex had hardened Sir Christopher Donally against the aristocracy that labeled a man's worth by the titles he carried rather than by his deeds. Now with a new bride in his future and a sister who is about to enter Society, Christopher is determined to put the past behind him. But when Alex asks for his help in finding a thief, he agrees, in exchange for her support in launching his sister. Though running into Alex was not planned, nor his emotional reaction welcomed, he can't help but be undone by one single, soul-stirring kiss.

Years after receiving my Criminal Justice degree from the University of Oklahoma , I discovered the
historical romance genre. True legends like M.M Kaye, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Judith McNaught, and
Penelope Williamson, sparked my love for writing and convinced me I wanted only to do one thing in
my life and that was to create great stories alive with grit and passion.

In the past, I've written westerns for Leisure under Lori Morgan and Pirate adventure books for Berkley
under Laura Renken. My books have been five times reviewer nominated by Romantic Times
Bookclub for Best Adventure and Best Historical Suspense and Gothic categories. They have won the
Holt Medallion twice, the WISRWA Writer's Choice Award, the Affaire de Couer reader's Choice award
and will be published in five foreign languages worldwide. My Lord Pirate, was a 1999 Golden Heart
Finalist, which launched my publishing career with Berkley.

I live in the Chicago area where I am also the former president for the Windy City RWA chapter.
Currently, I pen stories for AVON/HarperCollins under my name, Melody Thomas. Wild and Wicked in
Scotland, the first book in my new Charmed and Dangerous series appeared on shelves January
2007. The second book, Sin and Scandal in England, was an Avon October 2007 release. Passion
and Pleasure in London came out August 26, 2008. For more information on my books check out my

Should I read in order?
This is the first book in the series, but book 2 is about Brianna, this hero’s sister. She’s in the book a decent amount so you might want to start here before you read her story if you like the build on character arcs.

Basic plot:
It’s been ten years since her annulment and now she’s run into Christopher again at the museum she works. When she notices jewels have been thieved from priceless artifacts, she strikes a bargain with him to help protect her position.

Give this a try if you want:
- Victorian time period (1866)
- Engineer/business man and archaeologist/nobility heroine
- London setting
- Bargain – hero will help solve the missing jewels dilemma if heroine will launch his younger sister in society
- Class difference feel – heroine is a lady and hero is an Irish soldier her father despised
- Second chance romance
- Lower steam – there are 2 full scenes that aren’t overly long
- Note: This is Melody Thomas’ debut novel

Ages:
- Heroine is 28, hero is 32

My thoughts:
I really wanted to like this one! But I struggled through most of it. A big part of that is second chance is a hard one for me to really love. I love falling in love and in so many second chances, that part already happened. And you totally miss all of the beginning of their relationship here. Anything with those butterflies of getting to know each other and the first kiss, first touch are tainted with bitterness and heartbreak. So that is just a personal thing for me. I think if you love second chance, this would be a great option to try.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on what I wanted more of here other than my trope disconnect. It was kind of boring to me, but not totally – there was a bit of a mystery going on and some danger elements. I’d say I wanted them together more but they kind of were together for a lot of the book...I think I wanted them ALONE for more of the book. A lot of their time together seemed to be with the hero’s family or out in society and I just craved more ‘them’ time than what I got and never really got sucked in.

Overall I did really enjoy her writing and I will definitely be trying another. In some ways she reminded me of a Meagan McKinney I read. I didn’t love the ending – it was really all thrown together in there at the end. I wanted a better, more complete and wholesome resolution and coming together of the hero and heroine after everything they had gone through.

It’s an intense book in some ways but didn’t grip in in a heartbreaking way it probably should have.

The first scene was fade to black and the book was put in time out. I was glad I came back to it though because the story did improve from there and I did get a couple on page sex scenes lol.

En realidad un 3.5.
Exactamente no sé qué decir.

I don't know how to rate this book. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up until 4:30am to finish this book, but this book is such a major let down. Christopher and Alexandra had something special. This book just doesn't deserve them.

This is my first book from Melody Thomas. I didn't know what to expect but was very happy that the book swept me into the story. I couldn't let the story go. I wanted to know what Christopher and Alexandra did. I wanted to see them reconcile with each other. I wanted to know how they could overcome the difficulties and past betrayals. The lead characters had chemistry. My stomach turned reading about how Christopher and Alexandra saw each other again after10 years. For that, this book would get 4 stars from me.

But the story just went on and on without ever really showing me that this was a great love story. Christopher seemed really cold toward Alexandra. There wasn't enough of internal struggle on his side to convince me that he did not mean what he said when he uttered those hurtful words. Alexandra was way too forward for my taste, a fact made worse because I was not convinced of Christopher's affections.

I also found Alexandra's character hard to believe. Not that I am such an expert. I think this was Victorian England, so perhaps female status had been somehow improved and a female scholar of noble birth wasn't so unbelievable. Alexandra (17) and Christopher (21) met young when they were in India. But Alexandra's father separated them because he believed Christopher was not right for his daughter. 10 years later they met each other again in London, both believing the worst of each other, that they had been abandoned by the other person. So a lot of bad blood between them. I suppose it was unnatural how calm Alexandra was about meeting Christopher again. But I appreciate the lack of drama. I do not do well with angry people.

In this book I was very very drawn to the couple. I was invested in them, wanted to see them together. But what happened to them was just one missed opportunity after another. The relationship never quite got to the point where I felt yeah this is Christopher and Alexandra's story. In a way Melody Thomas reminds me of Laura Kinsale. The stories are crazy, but I can't help it: I love the characters. So I held on to the story hoping that the story would deserve them. Alas in this case I was left quite disappointed. But I enjoyed reading about Christopher and Alexandra immensely. This wasn't a bad read at all, just not a satisfying one.

Wasted potential thy name is 'In My Heart'. This was such a promising book at the beginning. It has a not very social academic heroine struggling with her position at the Bristish Museum, an Irish businessman hero who is in constant battle with a society which values titles more than accomplishments and a 10 year old annulled marriage that has given them a boy who died as a toddler. It even has a mystery about stolen gems as a backdrop.

But the love story (if you can call it that) just didn't work, mostly because I soon came to loath Christopher, the hero. He seemed to be devoid of any big emotions towards Alexandra, was snotty, utterly passive, never stood up for her (or for his intended fiancée for that matter) and just stumbled into an affair with her because she instigated the whole thing. When he confesses that he never thought about her during their separation you totally believe him.

Furthermore the dramatic past has practically no impact on the present. Alexandra harbours no ill feelings towards him for never coming back to her and he rid himself of all memories - I honestly would have preferred it if he'd taken her as his mistress to enact some kind of revenge scheme. At least that would have shown he cared and was an active player.

Her father was penned as the villain of the story, separating his precious 17-year old daughter from her suitor who 1) was a drunk, 2) only approached her because of a dare and 3) had a tarnished military history. I only cheered him on because Christopher never gave any indications that he truly and passionately loved her. Even at the end when he decides that his relationship is more important than his business ventures it wasn't a big thought out romantic gesture he had worked towards. Just another thing that kind of happened to him.

When I finished the book I was cranky and slightly depressed for the heroine who for whatever reasons sold herself short.

p.s.: I normally couldn't care less about anachronisms in historical romances but here they grated because most of them occurred in connection with Alexandra's position as a women in a professional academic enviroment. Female scientists in Victorian England are an interesting topic. It is well researched, research the author could have used to make the heroine's situation believable and interesting at the same time.

I found In My Heart in my second-hand bookstore, and when I saw in GR that it is the first book of the Donally Family series, I bought it. It took me a couple of years to pick it up, and I picked it up because it fulfilled a couple of tasks in different reading challenges.
It has mystery, intrigue, and family secrets.
Christopher and Alexandria are the hero & heroine. Both are tormented--to different extents--by the past. The mystery unfolds slowly, and clues are in just the right spot. I also found the battle of emotions between the main characters refreshing because they each had to overcome obstacles placed in their path indeed. Alexandria had to figure out who she was and the person she wanted to become. She had to find the inner strength to stand up to her family and the world. Christopher had to learn to forgive the egregious sins committed against him.

I'm not sure if I got this book for free or not, as it was lurking unread on my kindle app. It was pretty far down on my list, so it has been lurking for a while. This is one of those really great romance novels. It has mystery, intrigue, family secrets, and great writing. My liking of this book starts with character's names. They're normal, and normal for the time period. Christopher and Alexandria are the hero & heroine. Both are tormented--to different extents--by the past. The mystery unfolds slowly, and clues are placed in just the right spot. I also found the battle of emotions between the main characters refreshing, because they each had to truly overcome obstacles placed in their path. Alexandria had to figure out who she was and the person that she wanted to become. She had to find the inner strength to stand up to her family and the world in general. Christopher had to learn to forgive egregious sins committed against him. The ending was quick, but the way the story sorted itself out was very satisfying. I would recommend this to people who don't usually read romance, as well as regulars to the romance genera.

A wonderful read.

Alexandra and Christopher married young and were so in love and happy. But family forces their way into their young marriage, telling lies and making threats that tears them apart.

The meet again almost 10 years later and life has gone on but neither are truely happy. Alexandra is smart woman and has learn to bury herself in her work at the musuem never really thinking of love. She has never forgotten Christopher or the pain she suffered.

Christopher has come up in the world making loads of money with his business and helping his family find happiness. He has never forgotten Alex but chooses to bury his pain.....and pretend it never happened. He doesn't allow his emotions to show but Alex soon has him in an emotional hurricane.

There is so much going on in this book: intrique, danger, heartache, lies, truth, and romance. We will meet Christopher's large Irish family which will carry on the series and Alex's surprise family.

A great well written read, looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Story is set in 1866, London. Sir Christopher Donally returns from war and is sought out by Lady Alexandra, his former lover. She has discovered the theft of several valuable gems from the museum collection and wants Christopher to help her find the thief. The plot references the strong prejudice against the Irish people.

Wonderful historical! A true romance! Inspiring and touching with a story just as enthralling as the sex appeal of the characters. The story of the hero and heroine is dramatic and captivating enough to stand out for these aspects alone. It has strong emotional content that touches the heart. Highly recommend this historical romance for those that like heart felt stories.

Sigh. This story started out strong but got muddled in the middle. The hero and heroine seemed to be from different stories and forced together. Less characters please and more adventure!! Not a big fan of any of the characters at all. Just a dud.
