Perilous Tides

Rate this book
Three years after her mother's suspicious death, forensic artist Jo Cattrel is in hiding, working at a storm-watching lodge along the Washington coast. When her father sends her a disturbing and cryptic message, Jo leaves the safety of the lodge to find him. But during the ferry crossing, Jo witnesses a murder--and becomes a target.

More surprising to Jo than being in danger is the identity of the person who steps in to protect none other than her ex, former Green Beret Cole Mercer. Now a private investigator, Cole has been looking into her mother's death. If he can just uncover the truth, maybe Jo can end her self-imposed captivity and the two of them can pick up the pieces and build a future together.

As Cole and Jo search for answers, the past rushes in like a dangerous tide to sweep them away before the truth can be revealed.

In this action-packed thriller, USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard serves up a complex plot and the sizzling romance readers have come to expect.

Perilous Tides pulled me straight into that cold, churning uncertainty where danger feels one step behind and truth costs more than you want to pay. There’s something about this coastal setting—isolated, raw, unrelenting—that fits the story so well. I could feel the wind, hear the water crashing, sense the tension in every hidden motive.

The characters felt real to me, scarred by loss and secrets, yet still pushing forward. I loved how their choices weren’t easy or obvious. The danger was physical and emotional, rooted in family betrayals and old wounds that never quite heal.

Elizabeth Goddard knows how to keep the tension sharp without losing the heart of her characters.

The faith element was subtle, mostly limited to prayers and quiet integrity. I found myself wanting more depth there.

This is the kind of suspense I enjoy—dangerous, layered, unwilling to promise easy answers. I’m glad I spent time with these characters, chasing down truth in places it was never welcome.

I received a digital ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

When something jars your world, and it shatters and falls apart, where do you go?

Most of us would say we find safety in a loved one or our parents.

What if going to your parents for protection and a safe place to reconnect or rebuild was the most dangerous place you could go?

This is the premise that author Elizabeth Goddard used in writing Perilous Tides. After losing so much in such a short space of time, Jo Cattrel has few options to find safety. She soon discovers that connecting with her father doesn’t offer protection; in fact, just the opposite. Any attempts to forge a relationship with him end in loss and destruction, both literally and figuratively. I love how this leads Jo to relying on God. She realizes that the future is unpredictable and that only God knew what was ahead of her, and that he had her in the palm of His hand. I was encouraged when Jo leaned into this to survive her mind-warping experience.

Goddard piggybacks on this idea and spotlights the cost of safety - the perils of protection. I loved the surprise of a subplot that I didn’t see coming and how it tied everything together, showcasing the dangerous cost of protecting someone, of protecting knowledge, and of protecting a way of life. It was good to be directed to consider the duality of freedom and the power of knowledge. “The truth is out there.”

I was in awe of how Goddard brought to light the powerful impact of the past and how it shapes our present. I didn’t want the ‘before’ sections to end as I was gobsmacked; I read slowly so as not to miss any small detail that Goddard had planted.

Finally, I treasured the reminder about perpetual fortitude and how we need to become more like the evergreen.

Goddard never ceases to amaze me with her pacey, bingeable plots and her ability to surprise me. This time she brought the amazing geography of the Olympic Peninsula to life and set her gripping tale of intrigue against this setting. My highlighter worked overtime and as I got closer to the end of the book, I had to keep reminding myself that the story wasn’t over yet … Goddard has another book in this series planned. Whew!

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

The first chapter of Perilous Tides will definitely suck you straight in as Jo literally finds herself in danger, but it doesn’t stop there. The attacks and danger escalate as the story unfolds. Perilous Tides is a fast-paced suspense with twists and turns and a mystery involving Jo’s parents’ true identities and her mother’s death. The plot was engaging, the characters were well-written with Jo having trust issues, and the story was riveting from start to finish, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This is the first time reading the author, and she completely grabbed me from her opening pages. She delivers nonstop action and a very fast-paced story that was hard to keep up with in some places.

Perilous Tides is the second book in a series, and I do think it is necessary to read book one to get the complete story. There were a few places that I felt a little out of touch with what was going on, especially the two main characters’ backstory, and why he left to begin with, which was a common thread in this story.

Goddard captured my attention and loaded this book with twists and turns. Romance is an ultra-slow burn as they had a lot of things to work through while trying to stay alive and solve the mystery. However, emotionally, there is a connection, especially on his end, and certainly, there are things to develop throughout the story. This is a clean romance with a touch of Christian flair.

The character development is great, and the author is very talented at ramping up the action. She gets the heart beating, especially as the reader really doesn’t know what’s going on or who they’re searching for.

For the romantic suspense lover, this is a fabulous choice! Cannot wait to read her again!

I couldn't put it down! "You won't see danger coming....until it's too late." "Those words, shared by her mother moments before her death, had defined Jo Cattrel's life for the last three years, since she'd fled Michigan." "More surprising to Jo than being in danger is the identity of the person who steps in to protect none other than her ex, former Green Beret Cole Mercer." Excellent story, so enjoyed these two characters, and it was fun to see Remi and Hawk from Book 1 in the Hidden Bay series.

From the very start, Perilous Tides totally grabbed my attention and kept me turning pages. I was fully invested in finding out who was behind the murder and mayhem. I am loving this series and highly recommend it to lovers of romantic suspense!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Wowsers!!! Seriously get ready for a wild ride full of twists and turns! I love a good mystery/suspense/thriller and this one hit the spot! I was listening while I was on vacation on the coast and I was checking that the doors were locked and no one was following me around while I was walking around the town by myself! Hahaha! I have a great imagination and reading/listening to lots of books like this doesn't help. ;-)

Jo is in hiding after the death of her mom a few years earlier. The book opens with her trying to find her dad and all these crazy things start happening! She witnesses a murder, is attacked and left for dead. Thankfully a private investigator, Cole Mercer, rescues her! And he's not just any PI. He knows her! They used to date. Oh my word. I loved all of this one! Seriously, so many twists and turns that I was recalculating my guesses! It was wonderful! I love when an author can do that and keep me guessing!

I discovered this authors books last year and I have been loving them lots! If you haven't read her books, try this one, or any of her many other books. I didn't read the previous book in this series and can say that it didn't affect me enjoying this one. It can definitely be read as a standalone!

Just lock your doors before you start reading this one, especially if you're reading it at night, all alone. Good luck!!!

Content: Clean. Moments of peril and suspense. Nothing overly graphic. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Forensic artist Jo Catrell has been in hiding since her mother’s sudden death. Now her biological father whom she calls “Pops” has warned her that she needs to disappear again, leaving Hidden Bay behind and finding a new place to hide. In her quest to find her dad and talk to him about her situation and why she is in danger, she immerses herself into even more danger when she witnesses a murder. Targeted and running from an unknown assailant, Jo is surprised that the man who teams up with her is her former boyfriend, former Green Beret Cole Mercer. When Cole disappeared from her life before, she never expected to see him again, but there he is, just in the nick of time and rescuing her from certain death. The danger is real, the secrets are buried deep, and together Jo and Cole set out to discover who wants her dead and why. The plot is complex, a web of lies and deceit that carried me along on the waves of total entertainment as I got wrapped up in riding that wave to the truth. I enjoyed the interactions between Cole and Jo as they discover a second chance at love, if she can just survive. The plot held me completely captivated as one layer after another about the past that killed Jo’s mom is exposed, with some surprising and tantalizing twists. This book kept me engaged in the story, cheering for the characters and really wanting to know who the villains were and what in the world they could want with a forensic artist who was totally ignorant of her past roots and the troubles that her parents unknowingly led to her safe place in Hidden Bay. The scene is perfect for the encroaching threats, with a wild and stormy sea along with a threatening storm all around Jo. The tone was one of intense danger and the need to know before her ignorance gets her killed. I especially enjoyed the characters from Storm Warning appearing in this book to offer assistance to Jo and Cole. It was good to read more about Remi and Hawk and the progression of their relationship. This book is compelling suspense, taut and unpredictable, but also enticing as the clues were laid out methodically by the hand of a master storyteller. With crisp writing, escalating tension and high drama, this book hooked me with the believable characters and the creeping dread that seemed to follow Jo everywhere. Perilous Tides can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the series in order and really enjoying the rich, descriptive details of Hidden Bay.

I loved the subplot/events featuring Cole and Jo in book one of the Hidden Bay series so I was really excited to find out that their second chance at love was the topic of Perilous Tides. I mean… that, along with Jo witnessing a murder (and nearly being a victim herself) and becoming a target of possibly more than one villain, of course. Because Elizabeth Goddard excels at blending sweet & swoony romance with edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting suspense. I knew we were in for a heart-racing fight for survival in this book, and I was very happy to be right. She certainly keeps Cole, Jo, and readers on their toes in Perilous Tides, but she also gives them (and us) moments to catch their breath, explore their still-there feelings for one another, and rely on God who holds their lives and their hearts in the palm of His hand.

From the very first line – “You won’t see danger coming . . . until it’s too late.” – I was invested in this story. As we learn more details about why Jo’s in hiding, dig deeper into her mother’s death, investigate why Jo’s father has cryptically disappeared, and try to stay ahead of the people who want Jo dead, I really did feel like I was right there in the middle of it all with them. Jo’s former career as a forensic artist added compelling layers to both her character and the suspense plot; in fact, the more pieces of the puzzle we connect, the more compelling her backstory – and that of her parents – becomes. And then there’s Cole whose own history is intriguingly multifaceted in its own right. The combination of the two of them together – as friends, as exes, as survivors, as people still in love with each other – made the suspense more high-stakes and created a relationship for us to root for, heart first.

Bottom Line: Icy plunges into the water, bombs set to explode, barrages of bullets… just another day around Hidden Bay. Perilous Tides by Elizabeth Goddard delivers an engaging story that you won’t be able to put down… and may want to read with all the lights on! Cole and Jo are vibrantly-sketched characters you’ll enjoy getting to know, and their search for answers – and safety – will keep you on the edge of your seat. I stayed engrossed in the plot from stunning beginning to riveting end, and I would have been just as invested even without the romance, so that should tell you a lot about how well written the suspense is. Delightfully, though, there IS a tender romance that made my KissingBooks heart happy, along with a naturally-incorporated faith thread that touched me too. I can’t wait for book three!

TREACHEROUS TIMES

Elizabeth Goddard’s Hidden Bay Series is truly impressive, and her latest installment, PERILOUS TIDES, exemplifies a romance driven by suspense—my favorite genre! Goddard has crafted a phenomenal, fast-paced storyline that captivates readers from the very first page and keeps them breathless until the end. One of my favorite quotes from this book is, “You won’t see danger coming . . . until it’s too late.” Goddard uses this quote to build tension throughout the narrative.

The characters in PERILOUS TIDES are intriguing and multi-dimensional, with danger following them wherever they go. Goddard's plot is intense, and her writing immerses readers in the action, making them feel like active participants rather than passive observers. Once again, she weaves a simmering romance into the story, as the two main characters attempt to postpone their "Define the Relationship" (DTR) conversation until the danger has passed.

Forensic artist Jo Cattrel fled Michigan after her mother died. Now she is on the run again after a warning that her dad gave before he disappeared. Cole Mercer left her without a word but is back at Hidden Bay to protect her and search for her mother’s killer, with the hope of never having to leaver her again.
This was one exciting story with lots of elusive clues and confounding connections. But Jo and Cole have help from law enforcement and Hawk, Cole’s brother, who owns a handy helicopter.
Set in a beautiful, rustic environment in Washington State, the bad guys do not let up. There are so many unanswered questions about family that Jo can hardly keep up. And the closer to the truth, the more danger. But that only helps them rely on God and further their tenuous relationship.
Get ready for a stunning story with a solid faith thread and a steadily building romance. You will not be disappointed.

Elizabeth Goddard's Perilous Tides kept me on the edge of my seat.

Jo Cattrell wants only to be safe, to know why Cole Mercer ghosted her when they seemed to get along so well, and to find her father who has recently disappeared. When she learns that he is in Seattle, she leaves the storm-watching lodge where she has been living and hiding to search for him. Only, someone follows her. Then she witnesses a murder on the ferry. The murderer ties her into the car with the dead man and pushes it off the ferry.

It would have been a very short, sad story if former Green Beret turned private eye, Cole Mercer hadn't seen the car go off the end of the ferry. Despite his issues with water, he dives in, rescues her, and commits himself to keeping her safe. He's here to see her about a case he's investigating--the death of her mother. But someone doesn't want that murder investigated and they are after Jo.

So, who is trying to kill her--the person who killed her mother, whoever is chasing her father, the killer of the guy on the ferry? Goddard takes the reader on a wonderful, twisty road to answer these questions. Jo is a unique and interesting character with the baggage of a murdered mother, of a father she knew nothing about until just after her mother's funeral when she's on the run, and a longing to stop hiding and return to her forensic artwork.

Great read.

What a good book! I enjoyed it and it is full of suspense and intrigue with a little romance thrown in.

I loved the suspense and intrigue in this book. I was guessing until the end and definitely did not see the ending coming! I related to the MMC more than the FMC but that's personal preference. The feeling of inferiority and of needing to prove oneself is his flaw and handled very well.
The FMC struggles greatly with trusting men. Which is understandable given her life. The transformation was well done and also believable. The trauma was handled well. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A positive review was not required

Perilous Tides is an exciting visit to the Washington coast, where Jo and Cole try to get to the bottom of the dangers following Jo while navigating their feelings for each other. There’s suspense and danger, more questions than answers, and a few surprises along the way. The story is intriguing and complex, and I had a hard time putting it down!

I received this book as an ARC with no expectations of a positive review. This is the best book Ms. Goddard has written by far. The twist and the tuns in this book just kept coming. Jo found her self in danger, but had no idea why. This is a wild roller coaster ride to the end. Anyone who loves suspense, mystery, intrigue and a bit of romance will love this book. I could not turn the pages fast enough.

Ahhh I loved this from cover to cover. Just as amazing as the first book was, which I also rated five stars. I am in love with this author's writing style. It is solid! She is so consistent while avoiding redundancy. Such a smooth and well-paced experience. I have been so impressed by the premise for each book in this series so far, so much so that I'm really hoping the series will be longer than 3 books. While the first book felt like nonstop running, this one felt like nonstop questions. I read the whole thing to this true crime music playlist on spotify and I highly recommend it. This author nails both the romantic and the suspense in this romantic suspense.

Romantic suspense is not my go-to genre but I have been into it this year precisely because of this series. I am telling you, there is something about this and book one that just sets them a caliber above the rest of the Christian clean romantic suspense genre (of those I have read). The author gave the perfect amount of attention to the romance amidst this gripping suspense/mystery. I really love how she got right into the suspense and it just does not stop until the second to last chapter with the shortest yet sweetest ending to tie it all satisfyingly together. Chef's kiss! Her storytelling is what my reader preferences are made of honestly when it comes to this genre.

I was gifted an early paperback copy to read and review and let me bring it full circle to say once more that I loved this!

In this book:
-second chance
-bodyguard/protective MMC
-forced proximity
-pacific northwest
-colliding murder mystery cases
-former forensic artist FMC

Content Guide:
Romance - clean
Language - clean
Violence - frequent but non-graphic
Faith - light amount

“I would do anything for you. Don’t you know that?” “I don’t know that. I want to believe you. But you promised to tell me, and so far you haven’t.” “I didn’t come back because I was protecting you.”

Are you ready to be swept away in these “Perilous Tides”? 😍 I definitely was swept away from the first chapter! The danger and suspense do not stop as deep family secrets are uncovered. I loved getting to “see” more of the Olympic Peninsula too!

Jo is brave and strong. She is determined to see this investigation through no matter the danger. I loved how she worked through her distrust and feelings of abandonment and was able to give Cole a second-chance. Cole is intelligent, brave, and incredibly protective. I absolutely loved how he balanced his investigation with protecting Jo. It was very interesting to see how he as a private investigator worked with all the different agencies that ended up working on Jo’s case.

I really enjoyed seeing Remi and Hawk again as well. Hawk and Cole working together was fun after book one.

A few more quotes:
“I wanted you to be free, Jo. Free to live your life the way you want, not holed up in… yeah, a beautiful place, but you have so much to offer the world.”

“Are you worried that you won’t be enough? Because if that’s it, I’ll tell you right now you are absolutely all I need.”

“What are you going to do now, Jo? Are you going to stay with me, you know, like maybe for a lifetime?”

Perilous Tides is a sterling addition to the Hidden Bay series! I loved the first book in this series and had high hopes for this one! My expectations were decidedly fulfilled and exceeded! The formidable opening lines swept me into the story, and the perfectly paced plot, with precisely placed, impactful twists and revelations kept me fully invested in the outcome! The skillful intertwining of suspense, romance, and faith provided me with a captivating and fulfilling reading experience. The rugged, richly drawn Pacific Northwest setting ramps up the danger and suspense. As forensic artist Jo Cattrel seeks to unravel the mystery involving her deceased mother and elusive father, private investigator Cole Mercer, with whom she has a very complicated past, goes above and beyond to help and protect her. I love this couple who headline the expertly crafted, compelling, and engaging cast of characters. As danger raises the emotional stakes, the potential for a second chance romance kept me rooting for a happily ever after future for Jo and Cole. I appreciate the inspiring faith thread with themes of trust and forgiveness. I totally enjoyed this book and highly recommend it and the series as must reads for romantic suspense fans.

Another 5 star review for Mrs Goddard!! This was such an amazing book! I didn’t think I could love Elizabeth Goddard’s book more but this is a definite must read. If you love high stakes, clean romantic suspense you’ll fall in love with Perilous Tides and the first book too. There was a lot of danger with twists and turns that catch you off guard at every turn. Just when you think you might have something figured out, you didn’t see the next thing coming. I loved how Cole tries his absolute hardest to protect and keep Jo safe from all harm against her by risking his own life many times. Riveting suspense, danger, and intrigue from the opening paragraph! Goddard weaves together a masterful story set on the Washington coast in Hidden Bay which is a haven for people who need to disappear. Fabulous characters, thrilling storyline, beautiful scenery, and surprise twists and turns with the added bonus of romance make this story come alive as you are reading it. Goddard expertly showcases how God is an ever present help and rescuer regardless of life’s storms.

Jo Cattrel left her life as a forensic artist after her mother’s suspicious death to escape to Hidden Bay. Thurst one again into danger, Jo finds herself fighting to stay alive and figure out why danger keeps lurking at her door. She finds herself accepting help from the man who recently broke her heart, Cole Mercer. As they ran against time to keep Jo safe and get to the bottom of the mystery, they must face their past and their present feelings.

This is an excellent series and book two did not disappoint!! I loved catching up with characters from book one and learning Jo and Cole’s stories. Goddard’s books never disappoint to entertain and make me think. This one will definitely be a favorite! I am anxiously awaiting book three.

So I decided to take a interest in reading modern day fiction and I am glad I made that decision because this was a very impressive novel. Before reading this book I had never heard Elizabeth Goddard and after reading this I am bound and determined to read more of her books in the future. I for one was impressed not only by her writing but the way the plot played out and how she portrayed the characters.
Our main character is named Jo and she has been in hiding for the last couple of years. However one day she receives a message from her father and she decides to go looking for him. However she is unable to locate him and to make matters worse when she goes back home her mother has been murdered.
Shortly after her mothers murder her ex boyfriend Cole shows up to offer some support. They then go around looking for clues that may be linked in discovering the identity of the murderer and the motive behind the action. Although over the course of the novel they realize they still care for each other. Will it be possible to start over happily or will the killer prevent that from happening.

Perilous Tides is the second book in the Hidden Bay series. While you may see some familiar characters, I do think this could be enjoyed as a standalone without any issues as well.

Elizabeth Goddard never fails to deliver stories that will keep readers at the edge of their seat in suspense... and this one was certainly no exception. This one jumped right into the action from the start, with Jo witnessing a murder and finding herself in danger and being saved by her ex- Cole... and the danger didn't let up from there. Each turn of the page brings more twists and turns to keep you guessing! This is definitely one that you're going to have trouble putting down, with more questions popping up at every turn. Of course, I enjoyed the second chance romance between Jo and Cole, but I definitely felt like the nonstop action and suspense took the spotlight in this one. If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, this is definitely one you'll want to add to your TBR.

I had such a great time reading this book, maybe even more than the first one! Although it can stand on its own, it’s part of a trilogy set in Hidden Bay (just a heads up, the third book isn't out yet). If you haven’t read the first book, I’d definitely recommend going back and picking it up.

This book is well-written, featuring continuous action and intriguing plot twists. It's an excellent read, and I will definitely be recommending it to others.

Loved this book. The tension & suspense were spot-on, descriptions accurate of locales & weather, with a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle to solve surrounding Jo's past colliding with her present. Cole's heartbreak over wounding Jo came across as genuine, as did the brotherly banter at various points in the story.

I am reading this series out of order but I can tell you that I had no problems with the story as it definitely can be read as a stand alone. This author is such a great suspense writer. This story definitely keeps you on your toes or staying up way past your bedtime trying to figure out who the culprit is.

Jo Cattrel is a forensic artist whose has gone through a rough time, her mother was murdered and she is basically in hiding but then things happen and her dad gives her a warning before he disappears. Cole is her past love and he is back not only to protect her but to never leave her again. Seriously this book is fast paced and it gives you lots of clues that has you going down rabbit holes so you don't guess who is the bad guy.

I love that the characters grow throughout the story and rely more and more in God to get them through.

Overall I enjoyed the story and can't wait to read the rest of the books!

I received a copy of this book for review. All views are my honest opinion.

This is a gripping addition to the Hidden Bay series. Forensic artist Jo Cattrel has been hiding out on the Washington coast ever since her mother's suspicious death, but a cryptic message from her father brings her out of the shadows. When she witnesses a murder on a ferry ride across Puget Sound, she becomes the next target and is rescued by the last person she expects to step in and help her— Cole Mercer, her ex and a former Green Beret who’s now investigating her mother’s case.

This is a wild and twisty ride! One of my biggest fears is having my car go off a bridge, so my heart was pounding while reading the scene when the car plunged into the water. Just as I thought I knew who was behind everything, another clue would emerge and make me change my mind. Be warned—this book will keep you up or keep you from getting anything accomplished.

The author does a great job balancing the action, mystery, and romance. If you love romantic suspense that keeps you turning the pages late into the night, Perilous Tides is one you don’t want to miss. I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own.

Wow! Perilous Tides sucks you in from the opening scene!

You won't see danger coming...until it's too late.

Jo Cattrel has been hiding from an unknown enemy for three years. Now, after a cryptic message from her Pop, she left her haven to find him. However, what she found, or rather what found her, was danger.

Yeah, she had a feeling she was giving off the wrong vibes.

Cole met Jo last year when she saved his life. Now, it's time to return the favor. He didn't know the person he jumped into the lake to save, but once he saw those brown eyes, he knew who it was.

A silver Lexus sedan had rolled off the Washington State ferry with someone still inside.

Holy cow, the suspense is top-level in this one! I hated having to put the book down to get things done; I just wanted to keep reading. There is a great deal happening in the story. Sometimes in a suspense novel, you have to suspend belief for all that happens, but not here. While it is a lot, and danger seems to be coming from all directions, it totally makes sense.
