I found this one by chance on Apple Books, and since it was only €0,99 i decided to take a chance. Having read the excerpt and the blurb,i knew i was in for a rough ride, and boy was i right! Alessia has to go through só much abuse before she gets a chance at the happy after she deserves! It took a very long time before the romantic part started, but when it finally did,it was worth the wait. In the end,i have to say the story was well built, well written, and it kept me captured from start to finish. As retellings go,i have to say this retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado was a good one,and i will check more of this author.
Alessia and Antonio were childhood sweethearts until his cousin Valentino, son of Capo Giovanni, finds a way to break them up…..by convincing her father that he should marry her as he would become the new Capo when his father died. Alessia’s father was a cold and brutal man, always seeking ways to gain power,so he didn’t need much convincing….. Antonio was left with no other choice than to back out and keep his distance, his father Mrco may be the Capo’s second, but even he didn’t have the power to change what was happening.
Alessia went through hell in her marriage, her husband did everything he could to make her life as miserable as possible, and he enjoyed every second. Thinking marriage meant he could take over from his father turned out to be the wrong assumption, but he had a solution for that…. And once he got what he wanted,he immediately started to conduct business the way he wanted to….and that meant going in a direction that La Familigia didn’t approve of,but couldn really do anything about.
In the meantime,Antonio was biding his time, acting loyal but trying to find ways to dispose of Valentino. He didn’t trust the death of his uncle Giovanni, and when his father, who’d become Valentino’s second after his uncle’s death, was killed,he knew exactly who was behind it. Valentino didn’t accept critique, and Marco had been a little critical….. It also hurt him to see how Valentino treated Alessia, even lowering her to waitress, for free, in their restaurant, with the whores he was fucking. She had no freedom,no one to stand up for her,no loved ones to comfort her,and was forced to suffer through being raped and abused by her husband regularly.
Finally Antonio had the opportunity to get rid of Valentino, and he planned on keeping Alessia safe from the backlash his death could cause. Until she disappeared…..finding her freedom far away from everything she’d endured during her life. But her father wouldn’t accept her getting away, and Antonio, being voted as the new Capo, was the one he forced to bring her back. Because her father still had use for her…..Antonio would have to marry her,or he’d find another candidate that would. You’d think that was the best solution for both, but her trust in him was gone, and it didn’t look like it would return….even when he treated her like the treasure she was…..even when he showed her he still cared. On top of that, there were threatening letters starting to arrive…..letters that painted a very dark fate for Alessia.
As i said,it was a rough ride, but worth it,and i enjoyed the story very much. I will be trying more stories by this author, and i know she has another retelling of Edgar Allan Poe coming, called The Pit and the Pendulum.
At times, I feel like my heart was ripped from my chest….What an emotional rollercoaster! This was a story of love and sweet revenge. It was filled with suspenseful moments that kept me captivated. I felt so much rage and anger at times and then other times I laughed and smiled widely, feeling so much happiness and bliss. The author is an incredible writer and makes you feel each emotion as the characters experience them. There were moments I had tears in my eyes and I could not hold them back. The final chapters had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t wait to see what happened. I was picked as an ARC reader and I LOVED this book so much!!! I highly recommend it. It’s a wild ride filled with suspense, treachery, deceit, revenge and true love. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!!!
PLEASE CHECK TRIGGERS FOR THIS BOOK BEFORE READING
Thank you Tara for the e-arc! My thoughts are all my own.
Tara Conrad delivers a gripping dark mafia romance that masterfully reimagines The Cask of Amontillado. Readers familiar with Poe’s classic tale will recognize its influence, but Conrad expands on it, filling in the gaps Poe leaves, with a tense and haunting story that lingers long after the final page. The atmosphere is undeniably dark, with an unrelenting intensity that keeps the reader on edge.
That said, this book is not for the faint of heart. It delves deep into themes of domestic and sexual abuse, making for a harrowing reading experience. The heavy subject matter is balanced by a satisfying ending, which provides some relief from the darkness of the first half. However, the timeline can feel a bit disorienting at times, with events unfolding so rapidly that it’s hard to track how much time has passed.
Overall, Beneath the Shadows is an emotionally charged read that fans of dark mafia romance will appreciate. Just be prepared for a deeply unsettling journey before reaching the light at the end.
Thank you for the e-arc. If you have triggers, you probably shouldn't read this book. The number of times in the beginning of this book that I almost DNF'D it because of Valentino is unbelievable. However, I forced myself to keep reading in hopes that he would get what he deserved. Draco was just as bad. The ending made me happy & made the book worth reading.

Trigger Warnings:
A dark mafia Edgar Allan Poe retelling
When Alessia’s heartless, abusive father arranges her marriage to someone even more evil, Alessia wants nothing more than the freedom to live her own life. Her new husband, Valentino, is a sexual sadist and completely ruthless in his desire for power and control. His cousin, Antonio, has always been loyal to the family. Despite his love for Alessia, he must not reveal his feelings. However, the more he learns about Valentino, the more determined he becomes to exact revenge for those he holds dear.
Beneath the Shadows by Tara Conrad is an extremely dark mafia romance with many instances of abuse, and its trigger warnings should be consulted. Always protect your mental health.
A retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado and published on his birthday, Beneath the Shadows is a tale of betrayal and retribution interwoven with dark mafia romance. Valentino’s unyielding need to assert control compels him to commit unspeakable atrocities against women and his family. Tara Conrad crafted a fantastic revenge plot that improves upon Poe’s short story.
The romance is a little rushed, especially given what Alessia has gone through and continues to go through. I would have loved for there to be more written about her bond with Antonio in school and their reconnection. The story is much more suspenseful than it is romantic, but it is very well-written. Told through multiple points of view, it’s easy to connect with Alessia and root for Antonio. If you enjoy dark romance and have a high tolerance for triggering content, definitely check out this book!

My thoughts
Tara Conrad covered a lot within this story, enabling you to fully emerse yourself into the characters lives and journeys.
Alessia had an extremely difficult life but showed strength and resilience to survive various trauma and get the ending she deserved.
I did struggle with some parts of the beginning of the story as I really did not like Valentino and felt that Antonio should have done more earlier on in the book. I get that he was grappling with family loyalty and his feelings for Alessia so held back for as long as possible.
I did like Antonio and Alessia and enjoyed the story overall. It had some twists and turns throughout the book that put trust, family and loyalty to the test.
If you love dark romance, mafia romance, strong female leads and forbidden romance then this book is for you.
Do check the trigger warnings.
Thank you to Tara Conrad for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book by this author that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do suggest you heed her warning about triggers, however, I didn’t find them to be too bad. They all fit the scenes and context of the story.
This story is told from the lead character’s points of view and therefore we gain a better understanding of each character and the way their minds work. Alessia I liked immensely and she showed a lot of inner strength time after time. She certainly had a tough time growing up and this helped to build resilience.
Antonio, I also liked and admired. He was so different from his cousin, Valentino, thankfully. Valentino certainly made my blood boil but great descriptions by this author.
This book certainly brings forth a plethora of emotions that have you feeling them deep in your heart. The suspense element is incredible and indeed had me reading as fast as possible in many scenes.
A fantastic mafia story where second chances are real and true life shines through.
Not gonna lie. This was took me some time to finish it. I was also very close to DNFing it. Don't get me wrong. It had nothing to do with the story or the author. It was just that for a moment I thought there wasn't going to have an HEA 😅.
Antonio and Alessia had history but when she was arranged to marry his cousin Valentino he pretty much drowned all the feelings he had for her. Antonio was loyal to his boss and the family.
Alessia was tortured by her husband and at times I would get mad cause I wanted Antonio to jump in and save her but his loyalty to his cousin was always first in my eyes.
Eventually Antonio finds out that Valentino had not only betrayed him but he had betrayed the family and in addition to all of that his treatment of Alessia was the culmination but by this time Alessia wanted nothing to do with him or anything to do with her life and she knew it so she decides to run away but unfortunately she can't just run away and forget about her life so know Antonio had to go find her.
Their romance was probably 25-30% at the end of the story and I wanted more background on their relationship prior to her engagement/arrange marriage. I did ended up getting some information from the author that there IS a prequel novella that gives that glimpse into their relationship. (it's available for her newsletter subscribers) I did wanted to read it before doing my review but I just haven't had any time. If you do decide to read this one I would encourage you to start with the prequel.
A Mafia Romance with betrayal, revenge and a love rekindled
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. This book is not for the faint hearted. This is an intense story wrapped around power, loyalty, deception, betrayal and rekindling love. It is suspenseful, twisted and steamy and has you eager to find out what is going to happen next.
MFC, Alessia suffers unimaginable physical, mental and emotional abuse which does not break her. She is one badass. And MMC, Antonio finds himself losing the love of his life to disloyalty and struggles with his obligations and loyalty to his family and shutting himself off from his emotions.
I loved how the author incorporated different character POV throughout the story. Very well written where it had you going through and feelings the emotions of the characters. I teared up so many times for Alessia.
This is definitely a page-turner and I would recommend to those who love a dark gut wrenching mafia romance. It does have dark elements to this story, so I would advise checking out the trigger warnings before reading. This is the first book I have read of Tara Conrad’s and I will be following! 4 Stars!

Wow this story is one that will rip your heart out ❤️ believe me when I say please check your triggers this is dark.
This is a story of love and revenge at its finest it kept me reading to the point I was up till 2am because I couldn't put it down. This is written so well and it's my first book by this author.
So we have Antonio who has loved Alessia for a long time but loses her to his cousin Valentino who by the way is not a nice guy!!!! His chapters are 😱 he made my blood boil with the way he treats women in general. So when Alessia is made to marry Valentino she isn't happy as she wants Antonio......so she stands up to the bully that is Valentino and for that she's a fierce FMC her strength is, she's trapped in a loveless marriage and is looking for a way out!! 😍 what happens when her husband is killed? She goes on the run but Antonio is willing to find her and bring her back!!
This book is certainly dark and dangerous and you will be feeling every emotion going while reading this I can tell you. This is a really good mafia story about second chance at love and how true love always comes to be.
I was lucky enough to ARC read this book and am so glad I was given the opportunity. I don't mind a dark Mafia book, so I was excited to jump in. I will say the prequel was extremely helpful, it just gave backstory and helped to learn four characters from the beginning a bit easier. I had more emotional buy-in, and I felt that was important as the story progressed. This book pushed my boundaries for the darkness of one character, but I couldn't put it down because I was so invested in the FMC and MMC. I ached for them but wondered if there would be a HEA and how it could come about or overcome all that was against them. The final two to three chapters were like a balm to the intensity of the book. I was deep into the life of this family and needed closure. Tara Conrad wrote a beautiful story that is dark but with a purpose. I loved the "Cask of Amontillado" tie-in, absolute high-five on that part. I recommend this for those who read the trigger warnings and want to dive into the depths of this family.
This is Antonio and Alessia’s story. Alessia has loved Antonio for a long time, but he left her, and now her father has arranged a marriage for her to Valentino, the not very nice son of a mafia boss. Trapped in a loveless marriage Alessia yearns to be free, and when Valentino is murdered, she runs hoping to start a new life. Antonio is sent to find Alessia and bring her home, but he will do whatever he must to keep her safe and protected. This is a well written emotional roller coaster, which has found family, drama, angst, revenge, betrayal loyalty, danger, suspense, intrigue, an arranged marriage, trust issues, enemies / lovers, challenges, second chances, touch her and die vibes, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, spicy, tragic, haunting, unpredictable, and addictive, dark mafia romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Oh my gosh!!! This book had my emotions going in every direction. This is one of the best mafia romance, suspense books I have ever read the writing in. This was so well done. I could picture everything as it was happening. It’s a story about loyalty love power deceit, revenge all of the great things that make up an interesting story. I loved the main characters . I loved getting to know them a little bit with the pre-Novella and then along while reading. If you are into mafia romances, suspenseful books, a little bit of triggers sprinkled in then you will definitely need to pick up this book and read it !!! Will justice be served ??? Will love win in the end???
I am so happy that I was chosen to be an arc reader for this suspenseful story that kept me intrigued from front cover to back .
I was blessed to be able to read this book in advance and I’m so glad i was able to. Tara takes us on a journey of Mafia, murder and love.
We have our MMC Antonio, the loyal one, the do-gooder of the Mafia world - or so we think. He’s a good egg though
Our FMC - Alessia, is just a beautiful soul and is lumbered with just the worst person in the world - Valentino. I hate that guy. I hate him I hate him I hate him.
Tara, you’ve found a true fan in me and I will closely be following you on your writing journey 🖤
Please check the trigger warnings for this book. They come in thick and fast. This books ends with a HEA
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mafia Second chance Touch her and 💀 HEA Check trigger warnings
I recieved an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. (MAJOR MAJOR TRIGGERS… I did honestly think abt dnfing because it was a lot)
This story follows Alesia and Antonio through the twist and turns of betrayal in mafia families. Overall this book kept me intrigued, wondering what was going to happen next and who was going to fix the main issue inside the story. I don’t believe romance was a main theme until the latter part of the book. The mafia betrayals take over the majority of the book and Alesia and Antonio’s relationship is slow to begin but once it does it’s kind of insta lovey (but maybe because this is a second chance romance book). If you want a Dark mafia book that will keep you on your toes then give it a read BUT PLEASE check the trigger warnings because there are very very mature themes included in the book. 3⭐️
Tara Conrad did it again! Tara is a master storyteller. Beneath The Shadows is another prime example of her never ending talent.
My heart raced reading the prequel Beyond The Shadows and continued through the entire book Beneath The Shadows.
Antonio and Alessia are trapped in the mafia world in which they were raised and must play out the roles in which they have no say. Blood does not spare you from the wrath and evilness of those closest to you and those seeking power and control above all. If you enjoy mafia storylines this book is for you. I could not stop reading once I started.
This was such a thrilling book. Dark steamy romance, mafia, enemies to lovers… what more can you ask for? I couldn’t put this book down, eager to see when these two finally could be together, so grab some popcorn and buckle in! I was so captivated by the book I felt like I knew the characters and found myself angry, happy, and sad like it was real life. Such an emotional rollercoaster! The final chapters had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t wait to see what happened. I can’t wait to read more from Tara Conrad!!
*ARC REVIEW* I haven't read any of Tara's other books, but this has definitely made me want to delve into more of her work! I loved this book, it's full of drama, betrayal & secrets which I devoured. Alessia is an incredibly strong woman despite the cards she's been dealt which I loved. I can't say it was an easy read to start with because of the TW but I couldn't not continue with how gripped I was and I'm so glad I did. The story was strong, descriptive and had everything you could need in a dark romance, the ending though 😍 highly recommend!
When I found out that this was a retelling of The Cask of Amontillado, it immediately caught my attention because Edgar Allan Poe is my all-time favorite author and poet. All I had to do was read the prologue, and I was immediately hooked. There's suspense around every corner and made me want to read more mafia romance. Tara Conrad is a master of foreshadowing. She definitely knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the very last page.
I had the honor to be an ARC for this book. Though it was very well written and the character development was great, it wasn’t my cup of tea. It was a little darker than I expected and what the female lead goes through was just too much for me. Although it was too dark for my taste, I still enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down. Glad the bad guys got what they deserved and that love trumped over everything. If you’re into dark, spicy and psychological stories, this one is perfect for you.
Riveting! I had the honor of being an ARC reader for this book and wasn't really sure what to expect diving into this. Disclaimer: This book is dark, so make sure to check trigger warnings. The character development was so well written that often times I felt like I was plucked straight into their world. I felt all the emotions while reading this book. The story is full of love, deceit, and suspense that will keep you turning the page! Highly recommend.
Loved every single second of it! This book has it all! And I definitely recommend it!
Mafia romance with forbidden love, lovers to enemies to lovers, morally grey mmc, secrets, and plenty of plot twists. All in all, this needs to be your next read!
⭐️ 5/5 🌶 2,5/5 ** Now, one thing, while this book has s€x scenes every couple of chapters, not all of them were with consent, and with that, I'm not counting them as spice.
Alessia is forced into a marriage to Valentino. This man, ugh, made me so mad. Between him and her dad, I couldn’t believe what they did to her. Antonio is loyal and nothing like his cousin, Valentino.
This book worked its way into my head. All day, I had this book on my mind and needed to know what would happen next. I felt all of the emotions while reading and I loved the ending.
I loved this book so much! It made me mad, sad, and happy! If you like mafia you will love this. I felt so bad for our fmc many times but i hoped she would get a happily ever after and Valentino and Draco would get what they deserved. I don't want to give too much away but I was happy with the ending
Oh man, this book gave me whiplash in the best possible way. It was so good and kept me on my toes. This is a snuggle in and read in one sitting type of book. It grabbed me from go!!!! I can't wait to read her other books!!!!
I received this book as an ARC. It had me hooked from the beginning! The story was well written and I fell in love with the main characters right away. It will capture your heart and make you root for the good guy
