Johari Crown #1

Her Royal Protector

Rate this book
Aly Percy is her family's ugly duckling, and she's never been allowed to forget it. So she knows better than to imagine that Cup Companion Arif al Najimi's blue gaze holds anything but contempt for her as a woman, or ever will. But if he's offering to show her just how wild one night with him can be, wouldn't she be a fool to turn down his charity? She may never get another offer like this one.
Arif al Najimi isn't sure why he's dreaming about the little scientist who's so determined to take crazy risks for the sake of her research into the endangered turtles of his country. But as luck would have it, he's going to get the chance to do a little research of his own…into the question of why Aly believes her own negative publicity about how desirable she is—and how hard it will be to convince her of the truth.

ARC received via NetGalley

Even though I enjoyed reading this, I was a little disappointed with it. I loved the turtle research element of the story. However, as the romance aspect heightened, the turtle part sort of fizzled out which I didn't like. The characters were likeable and the plot was interesting. It's not a book I would read again though.

*NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"Her Royal Protector" was a decent read. The synopsis was intriguing to me and I was actually looking forward to reading the book but once I started I noticed that the interest that the synopsis garnered was gone. The characters were likable and their chemistry in the beginning was tangible. Unfortunately while the overall story was decent, it was also forgettable.

Dr. Olivia Percy has been told her whole life that she was ugly & Arif al Najimi takes it upon himself to show Olivia just how beautiful she truly is. With Olivia's disdain towards men that she perceives to be like her father, her ability to put her foot in her mouth & Arif's own moments of stubbornness, I was hoping for a grander story arch. But nothing spectacular or even unpredictable happens.

"Her Royal Protector" is a decent book that I honestly wouldn't read again but would recommend to anyone who reads "Blush" or "Quick Reads" Romance stories.

Her Royal Protector is a cute romance complete with an exotic locale, a royal hero, a heroine with low self-esteem, and a little bit of suspense. Olivia Percy is a scientist working on a thesis that requires the monitoring and evaluation of the Johari turtle. Their conservation numbers are low and her research may help deduce the reason for the decline. After making a complete fool of herself at the fundraising dinner, all Aly wants to do is get to her boat and get to the turtles. When her research companions can no longer join her, her first instinct is to stop the research then she decides to do it all alone, in waters she knows nothing about. When Cup Companion Arif al Najimi demands she move her research equipment to his yacht and not proceed on this trek alone, at first Aly declines. When Arif al Najimi indicates she will not be allowed to go without him, and indicates there may be an accident with her boat, she relents.

Their relationship gets off to a weird start. Aly is attracted to him but judges him as harsh and too good looking for someone like her. Let's just say her rotten father tanked her self-esteem to the point of annoyance in her character's inability to look beyond a mirror. As they work together, both Aly and Arif have developed some off-the-wall conspiracies about one another. Their attraction really is cute, though. Once they get beyond the no trust issues, Aly and Arif soften and then their chemistry really rocks the boat.

There is a bit of suspense and drama that add to the story. I wish the turtle research would have been expanded on a bit more. I felt Aly and Arif's over-dramatic thoughts about each other became an exhausting main focal point. I did like their bantering, it make their interactions a bit more interesting. Aly confronting her father's unfair treatment of her (unfortunately not directly with her father, though) helped improve her opinion of herself, as did Arif's assurances.

Her Royal Protector is a cute romance that doesn't take much time to read.

I was provided a copy of this books to read a long time ago and I apologize that I'm just now getting to the book.

Her Royal Protector (Johari Crown, #1) by Alexandra Sellers
Alexandra Sellers

A heroine with an Ugly Ducklings complex meets a memorizing blue eyed Sheik & neither is ready for their exotic temptations!

Olivia Percy is a fierce environmental activist for the Johari turtles is at the Great Palace of Bagestan to give the fundraiser speech for her boss, who became sick. No problem, except Aly thinks she is the ugliest female here, with her salmon colored dress, that is too big the boob department & also getting up in front of people, terrifies her. Her whole childhood her cruel & unloving dad told her she was ugly, so she is always not her genuine self. Plus this pantie dropping, devil inspired beard Adonis with amazing blue eyes, keeps staring, probably to call security & have her removed.

Sheik Ari al Najimi is the Cup Companion to the Sultan of Bagestan, so he is at the fundraiser because is also the environmental czar. He sees this itsy bitsy woman is the ugliest dress he has ever seen, who seems to be hiding with in herself & is shocked that she is Dr. Percy. Ari thought that this intelligent & proud environmentalist would have a more commanding presence. When he meets her, Aly stick her foot, then her whole leg, into her mouth & Ari is kinda charmed by this pixie. As he introduces her to the fundraiser, she trips up the stairs, sends her boss' speech flying across the stage, looks into his memorizing blue eyes & burned inside out.

Since her boss needs surgery, Aly is on her own for the trip to observe the Johari turtles, look for their nests, protect them, record the info & see if she can find out way they are dying out. Ari is furious that this hungry eyed pixie is about to travel across the dangerous gulf alone & makes her go aboard his sailboat with him or he was going to sink her boat. She is not happy because she wants him so much, that she is rude to distance herself. Ari wants to show her that she is desirable & then maybe he can get lost in her. The sexual tension is so high that one or both of them is going to explode. With misunderstandings on both sides, sneaking around, dangerous situations & a building need of unexploded passions makes their sail across the high sea an exotic & tempting adventure. Will Ari help remove her scales from her eyes & show her how beautiful & rare she truly is? Can Aly believe that he loves her & not pity her? How can they save the Jodari turtles for extinction? When will Ari realize she is other half?

This my first Ms. Seller romance & I did enjoy the exotic locale & the high seas adventure. Aly is a woman who had "UGLY" bashed into her brain by her father, because she SAW him for what he was, a con man. Women of today have a distorted vision of their bodies & so called perfect image. I found FLAWS more desirable & interesting, but I am an old crusty lady & no one listens to me. Ari was a man divide between his 2 different cultures, but he would of been happier to just embrace & blend them into his own world. I loved the phone call from his mom & how she kick the dumb out of his head. There was a lot of sexually tension & a buildup of passions, but Ms. Seller choose to keep the bedroom door closed. I prefer to let the characters unleash & explore their decadent sides, but the closed door worked for this story. Ms. Seller wrote a romance with great characters in exotic seas, fighting to protect baby turtles & I had a HOOT on the ride with them. I give this book a score of 3 fingers up & 6 toes.

3 1/2 stars

Engaging story, believable characters. The first part was really good although the ending, though not bad at all, did leave me wanting more. Nevertheless, I'd read more from this author and this series.

The story in a nutshell:

Aly Percy was prepared to continue her research on the endangered turtles in the country of Johari alone after her research partners have become indisposed. She didn’t expect to be accompanied by anyone else, most of all not by Arif al Najimi, Cup Companion and one of the closest advisers to the ruler of Johari. Aly may not be confident of her charms and beauty as a woman but she is confident and very invested in her research and cause. It’s a good thing Arif sees through her awkwardness and knows that she’s a bright, can-be-charming, and sexy lady. They grow closer together. But when it seems that barriers might already be falling, danger comes in the form of feelings and in more mortally dangerous enemies.

What worked for me?

I really appreciate that the author took the time to set-up the circumstances of our two main characters. Often times, this is taken for granted and a writer would just put the two main characters together with no explanation whatsoever and expect his or her readers to just take it as face-value. I’m really glad Alexandra Sellers explained the scientific study that Aly plans to undertake and I actually found myself invested on the safety of those endangered turtles as well. She was also able to show details about the country of Johari, its political structures, so that I had the impression of who Arif al Najimi is and where he stands in all of these.

I also love the chemistry between these two. I loved the build-up. I love how they are really getting to know each other as they spend more and more time together. I also appreciate that they are decent people, with good intentions, but as real as real people can get when the readers are shown that they harbor doubts themselves.

What did not work for me?

To be honest, I expected a story to be more on the amorous side. Not in the extreme but enough so that it justifies the tone of the book blurb. I was a little disappointed that the author didn’t even show how the two became lovers for the first time. I think the story as well as the bond between these two characters, especially in the eyes of readers like myself would have benefited greatly with that inclusion.

I was also a little underwhelmed with the ending. I accept it as an okay ending and I am not saying that it was a bad ending because it wasn’t. It’s just that I was expecting more. I expected that with the kind of setting-up that the author did in the beginning, that she would be able to give the ending the same treatment as well.

My over-all take on it?

Despite my small misgiving about the ending, this was an enjoyable read. I am left curious and interested with the fictional country of Johari and I would definitely still be checking out future releases from Alexandra Sellers.

Aly Percy has come to Bagestan to try to help save the Johari turtle, sacred to the people of Bagestan. Arif al Najimi is the environmental minister and of the royal bloodline. Aly is confident and secure in her role as scientist, but when it comes to her personal life she is shy, insecure and reserved. Raised to believe she was inferior and plain with no hope of ever finding love. Arif sees a beautiful, strong woman who is passionate about her work that makes his heart race and his blood burn. When Aly places herself in danger for her work with the turtles, Arif decides to become her royal protector

As a romance this was a wonderful story of two people overcoming obstacles to find true love. Yet there is so much more, suspense, beautiful scenery and a young woman coming into her own. I was thrilled with this romance story and enjoyed watching the characters grow and change as the story developed. How far will you go for love? Would you change yourself to help the one you love to grow and shine? I would definitely enjoy reading more from this series and from Alexandra Sellers.

This was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Not only for the romance, but also because of the blending of cultures that was made evident through Arif and his behavior. I really liked Aly, she was not a confident woman in anything that she did except her work. That she is very passionate about and will stand up to anyone for. Arif comes into the story as someone who is thinking that Aly needs more self-confidence in herself as a woman, but continually second guesses himself as to his motivations. Both Aly and Arif have their own agendas going into their trip. Aly is not happy that Arif has insisted he accompany her, because she believes it's better to go alone since her team leaders have a sudden reason to leave.
I loved learning about the difference in cultures between the West and the East. Some of the things that came out of Arif's mouth were enough to make a girl swoon, even if that was not the intention. For Aly, she has to fight hard to keeep it together and in her eyes, not make a fool of herself. Arif, meanwhile has been learning about what it is that Aly does and has taken a definite interest in Aly despite himself and his intentions. Eventually, they both come clean with what they're hiding from the other which leads to a night of passion for them both. Unfortunately, Aly overhears somethings the next morning, which leave her doubting Arif yet again. Arif, for his part is feeling a lot of things about Aly and when she abruptly leaves, he's confused as to why. There are a few more bumps along the road, but they finally come together in the end. I loved the endearments that Arif would say to Aly. My favorite was "heart of my hearts". Beautiful. I am really looking forward to more in this series, not only was it romantic, but also suspenseful in parts, and the sensuality that Alexandra brought to this was off the charts. I loved it!!

Aly Percy is a research assistant determined to complete her latest assignment. The protection of the endangered Johari turtles of Bagestan. When she is forced to give the fundraiser speech for her research team she is horrified at what happens. Not only is she underdressed but she trips on her way on stage and botches the speech up. What's a shy girl to do? She knows she is a plain jane compared to all the beautiful woman in the room. She was told her entire life how she would never measure up to other woman and she has come to accept that. Aly doesn't understand why or how she has caught the attention of Arif Akhtar. He scares her. For some reason he is the only man that has ever made her burn with lust. And he is totally out of her league.

Arif doesn't know what it is about Aly that caught his attention. He feels like there is something about her that prompts him to draw her closer. Maybe there is more to her than his first impression of her. He sees the beauty hidden behind the plain woman before him.

When they are forced to go together on Aly's research trip things between them heat up. Aly is determined to stay away from the man that makes her melt and he is just as determined to prove to her what a beautiful woman she truly is.

In the beginning of this book I was actually sad for Aly. I couldn't believe the damage her own father has caused to her self esteem. I could compare her to a timid mouse. The only area where she seemed to come to life was her research. I was delighted to see her grow into the woman she was meant to be with Arif's help. There were a few twists and turns that kept the storyline moving at a fast pace.

In this Entangled Indulgence novel, part of the Johari Crown series, we are treated to the story of Arif, a sultan's adviser ( called a Cup Companion) in the country of Bagestan and Aly, a researcher visiting the country on a scientific mission. Arif's role in the country's government is as an environmental minister but as a sheikh he has lived a life of luxury and power. Aly's determination to save the precious sea turtles considered sacred to his heritage draw him to her, as does her shy and unassuming behaviour and her down to earth treatment of him. The question remains whether two people from such opposite lifestyles can find common ground.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The setting plays a role equally as important as the two main characters. The description of the clothing, the luxurious locations, the sailing and the breathtaking scenery all combine to bring the reader into an enchanted world.

Arif is cast as the strong, dominant man used to taking what he wants yet he sees Aly's insecurities over her appearance and knows he must coax her out of her shell to trust him. Aly is strong and confident when in her element but reserved and shy without, emotionally damaged by her upbringing and feelings of unworthiness. How their romance develops is skillfully written, blending sexual tension and emotional moments. The story moves at a fast pace, with some mild suspense and action scenes thrown into the mix. If you are looking for a romantic fantasy world to take you away for an afternoon, this book definitely fits the bill! 4 enchanting stars.

Wow! I'm so excited that this is the first book in a series because it was amazing. We just got these nifty new "Hot Pick" buttons, and I'm definitely giving it to this one. Arif al Najimi was absolutely everything a hero should be. He was also exotic, an animal lover and ecologist, and saved Aly's life a couple times. While his views of women sometimes seems a little off, it really helped make him just a little too overprotective, but in the best possible way.

Aly was the traditional pretty and intelligent girl that didn't trust in her own beauty. But this time there was a very good reason why. And her reason why tied into so many other things in the story so beautifully that the whole back story was about as seamless as you could get. I loved how she kept running off and driving Arif al Najimi crazy trying to keep an eye on her.

Watching Aly and Arif al Najimi hunt for turtle nests and try to find out why they were dying off was a great story. There was a lot more action than what seems possible in a turtle nest hunt. There were even several times I found myself getting excited right along with them at a new next found. The side characters served to boost the story and enhance the personalities of the characters in just the right way. I don't think I could really find something I didn't like about this one.

ARC from Netgalley

The story revolves around Olivia Percy or Aly for short and Sheikh Arif al Nazimi. He is responsible for environmental rehabilitation in Bagestan and she is postgraduate student from England in Bagestan to research the dwindling Johari Turtle population. Both of them suspect there is foul play involved in the demise of the species but neither of them share that with each other and in turn suspect the other may be involved. He is everything she detests, he is money, she hates money, her father loved money and wasn't a good man and therefore in her mind Arif can't be a good man. It's definitely an unusual plot and that's the main aspect of the story that kept me reading. Aly and Arif as characters are a bit annoying, each of them in their own way. A big flaw for me though was the sex scene or lack of. I'm not saying every book has to be full of lust and explicit scenes, it's more that this book was leading up to it all the time and then at last they were staring into each others eyes on deck. Finally, then, turn the page and they're waking up in the morning. I wondered if pages were missing. It felt as if the author shied away from the subject at the last moment.
Based on the storyline 3 stars is my award.

Every once in a while I need a sweet, easy romance without the dark characters that roam through many of the books I read. I compare this to eating a cracker during a wine tasting session. Her Royal Protector served this purpose for me--cleansing my palate--by being pure romance and not a smexy romance. Everything is behind closed doors, and that is just right when you're looking for that type of romance. However, this is more than just a category romance; even though is has a sheikh as the male lead (which I really haven't read since my Harlequin reading days a long time ago), it's the unique storyline that makes this better.

Aly is working on her dissertation and travels to Arif's country to study and protect the Jahari turtle. She has a rotten father who verbally abused her for her entire life, and she doesn't really believe in herself as a woman, although she's a righteous spirited scientist, which I loved.

There's romance, suspense, and growth for both the female and male leads. I enjoyed reading this book a lot, and I enjoy reading a publisher-proofed book - the quickly self-published books have been getting a bit bad with the language/grammar recently. It's at the 3.5 level for me, but I round up, so it's a 4.

Thanks for reading!

First, let me say that the cover is rather misleading - this was a surprisingly non-graphic romance. While there was a lot of sexual tension between the hero and heroine, the author stops the descriptions just short of the bedroom.

As for the actual review, props to the author for coming up with a original slant to the 'Sheik and the Virgin' plot. The backstory of a environmental group trying to halt the extinction of the turtles added interest, although as other reviewers have mentioned, this plot thread fizzled out as the romance reached its culmination.

As to the romance, although I found both the hero and heroine vaguely irritating (not that I can pinpoint exactly why), this didn't really detract from the desire to see them get their happy ending.

Overall, an enjoyable, light read.

At first blush this was a typical category romance, heroine who thinks she's ugly (but of course actually isn't), arrogant CEO-type (prince in this case), etc. But once you get into the story, it isn't that at all. There was a lot more to the story, an understanding of why Aly thinks she's the way she is. I liked the imagined history of the Johari people. And of course, having such a wonderful cause that Aly's a scientist for (the Johari sea turtle) touched a tender chord with me.

I enjoyed watching Arif go from his somewhat cold "prince" persona and grow into the man who's willing to fall in love with the little scientist. I also like how the leaders of Johari insist their cabinet members (the Cupholders) shed their prince personas for a month a year and mix with the common for as common folk (be nice of politicians had to do that, yeah?).

Nothing in this book actually didn't work for me. It was a seamlessly delightful way to spend a couple of hours.

Thank you to the publisher and Ms. Sellers for letting me read it! Four gargoyles!

3.5 Star Review
Aly Percy is one of those characters that a whole series could be written around. She's funny, quirky, sometimes sad, troubled, clumsy, and dedicated to her cause of saving the Johari turtles. You can't help but to root for her throughout the entire book. She deserves love but doesn't believe she is worthy of any man, let alone Sheikh Arif. He's the perfect dark, brooding, alpha sheikh. He's the Sultan's Cup Companion. A trusted advisor responsible for the environmental issues of Bagestan. Is he really falling for the plain, small chested, unworthy Aly Percy? Or is he using her to get information?

Most of the book was immersed in the turtle study. As romance bloomed between the main characters, the turtle issue faded away and I would have liked a more clear end to that aspect of the story line. This was an enjoyable light afternoon read with wonderful characters.

Aly Percy has spirit, goodness and passion. When her project to save the endangered Johari turtles runs into problems, she decides to undertake it herself rather than quit. Arif al Najimi, a prince of the blood, won't permit this. The danger is to great. He will go with her as Her Royal Protector. The passion and excitement build as these two spend time together. Will he be hers forever? I enjoyed this smartly written romance which had a touch of suspense. Who would want to hurt the turtles? I especially enjoyed the ecological storyline. I found it interesting when Aly and Arif were locating and marking the turtle's nest. The lush setting of the Gulf of Barakat added to the romantic feel. These characters were well written and interesting. Their battle of wills and intense attraction hooked me immediately. I wanted these two to have a HEA. Her Royal Protector is a perfect beach read. Alexandra Sellers knows romance and this book proves it.

Aly is researching turtles in Arif's country and someone is sabotaging her research. Both are distrustful of each other due to what others have told them and are fighting not only their attraction for each other but also those that want to stop Aly from doing her work.

Poor Aly is such a mess with how her father filled her head with such lies. I know that Arif began his mission to combat those lies with his heart not in the right place, but once he fell for her he had such a way with words. Oh and he was pretty good with the sexy talk too. I would love to read more about what their wedding and more of their future would be like.

I give Her Royal Protector 4 hearts!

Her Royal Protector was okay. There were moments I was really into it and others where I felt disconnected from the reading itself. There was a great plot, a royal on a boat with a scientist following turtles to protect them. Add in an unknown cause as for their dying off....I mean intrigued right?

Arif is a Cup of Champions believe Aly needs to be shown how beautiful she is. Years of being cut down, Aly is shy, leery, and just wants to save the turtles. It gets to be quite the journey, but sadly I think the turtles got forgotten. I mean it seemed important in the book....but all in all it was good.

This is a sweet escapist romance. It was a joy watching Aly bloom. She is smart and fiercely determined to do the right thing. She is nobody’s fool yet she has self-esteem and Daddy issues that keep her from being all she can be. Arif has issues too but not as easily recognizable. When these two get together there is an undeniable chemistry. Now if they can only get their heads out of the way and let their hearts do the talking. Get away from it all and visit with Aly and Arif in the gulf islands.

This was an old fashioned read for me…taking me back to the days of my Mills & Boon addiction (the 80’s). A powerful man. A mouse of a woman who needs coaxing to bring out her true colors. A situation that pits his brawn and her brains to outsmart a bigger threat. Classic M&B. Cute and light-hearted in a way. It did not grab me completely but it was an enjoyable read. Stuck at the airport waiting for your delayed flight? This is a good way to pass the time.

Based on her book list on Amazon, it looks like Sellers books are full of Sheikh-y goodness and Her Royal Protector is no different. It’s a little about two people fighting their feelings and a bit about Aly’s self-esteem issues and a decent amount of intrigue over who might be harming the turtles. It’s a pretty quick read and I really liked Aly and Arif together. Both have their hang-ups and I liked the way that Sellers brings it all together in the end.

Her Royal Protector was an enjoyable read.

The storyline was interesting and had me turning the pages to see how Arfi and Aly would ever find a way to work through their differences and the lack of self belief in Aly.

My only complaint was that I would have loved a glimpse of them in the future, I feel an epilogue would have added to my overall enjoyment.

I just finished this book and I have to say I did not think I would enjoy it, but I was wrong I did. Aly is not a confident woman. She is only confident as a scientist who wants to save the turtles. Arif is an advisor and also somewhat of royalty. He becomes Aly's protector during her scientific excursion. There is a little suspense and of course romance. Not enough passion for my taste though. It was a sweet read.

A nice sweet romance. A lot of romance today has a lot of sexual content which can be in great detail, if that's not your thing then this is the ideal read for you. I don't even think there's a swear word in it. A very safe 3 stars.

bit cheesy. And the heroine overcame her insecurities way too fast. all the hero had to do was say you are beautiful a few times and wow a whole lifetime of being insecure about her looks is all gone. way too easy/quick. there also was not much to the relationship..too fast..not enough emotion

Ok

Sweet romance but not very exciting. It had the potential for some danger and intrigue but just ended fast. I found myself zoning out and just skimming over to get through it. Not worth the money, should be freebie.
