Janie is an experienced home study evaluator for a local adoption agency. Michael is a man with a tragic past, a man once accused of murdering his wife and son. The two main characters are observed and commented on by Trixie; Michael’s dreadfully overweight Chihuahua. Trixie’s voice lends a wise and poignant tone to the story line. The interaction between these three voices form the core of this character-driven novel while various other characters, in the roles of friends and neighbors, give the story opportunities for humor. There are Janie’s two best friends, Kip the Trustafarian who lives next door and Water Hose Walter, a next-door neighbor who obsessively waters his yard. They help us to laugh at the human drama created by the main characters, the drama and pain that comes from falling in love and learning to trust after life has dealt with us harshly. The story line has enough humor, mystery and heart to keep the reader turning pages until the end.
