In the rugged Montana Territory, a Boston socialite's bid for freedom collides with a rancher's quest for a family.
According to Boston’s elite society, Ella Mountbatten has it status, prestige, and a bright future. What they don’t know is that her life as a socialite has become a gilded cage of abuse and oppression under the control of her cruel fiancé and domineering parents. Desperate to escape, Ella flees Boston and seeks refuge in the small town of Harmony Springs, Montana Territory, where her former friend now resides as the sheriff. But with her family determined to drag her back to Boston, Ella's hard-won freedom—and her very life—hang precariously in the balance.
Rancher, Cody Brooks, is ill-equipped to be the guardian of three orphaned children. But that’s the situation he’s in after the death of his best friend. Now, what he needs is a wife to help provide love and stability to his makeshift family. So when a runaway heiress arrives in need of protection, it seems a marriage of convenience may be the answer to both their prayers.
But with danger closing in from Boston and the challenges of building a new life together, Cody and Ella must confront their deepest fears and desires. Can their marriage of convenience blossom into true love, or will the shadows of Ella's past tear apart the fragile hope they've found in Harmony Springs?
One note characters. Ella is running from a fiancé who beats her so she mistrusts men. Cody grew up in an orphanage so he’s gruff.
Lame or ludicrous dialogue. “Consider this a bonding experience for us all” said no 1880’s Montana rancher ever.
Cartoon villains. Action sequences that make little sense. Heavy-handed setup for next novel in series.
Two stars instead of one because the evolution of Cody and Ella’s relationship from strangers to friends to love was decently written, the kids were kids, and it read mercifully quickly.
*Another book recommended to me by the neighbor whom I’m beginning to suspect hates me.
The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride doesn’t tiptoe around hardship or sugarcoat faith. It rides straight into the thick of it—with boots on and prayers whispered through dust and tears.
From the first few pages, I was drawn in by the strength of the characters—not flashy or loud, but the kind of strength that’s forged in hard places. Real places. And through it all, the thread of Christian faith wasn’t decorative—it was essential. This is the kind of story where personal relationships with Jesus don’t sit quietly in the background; they drive the choices, anchor the hope, and steady the hands holding tight to truth.
There’s a moment that struck me deep—Ella thinking: “Whatever the future held, she needed to trust that God had it under control. Whatever that might look like.” That line isn’t just for the page. It’s the kind of reminder that shows up in real life—when nothing’s predictable and everything feels uncertain. That’s the tone this book carries—not just romantic tension or frontier challenges, but a daily faith walk that breathes off the page.
Cody’s life is ranch work, responsibility, and doing the best he can for the three children suddenly placed in his care. His world isn’t polished, but it’s steady. And when Ella steps into it, she brings more than relief—she brings a strength that’s been forged through pain. Their journey together isn’t rushed or tidy… and that’s exactly what makes it feel real.
One of my favorite moments? When Ella says: “Do what you can, and trust God with the rest.” That’s the heart of this book—doing what you can, and laying the rest at His feet.
And then there’s this: “God had taken her fear and turned it to joy.” What a testimony. What a turnaround. What a powerful picture of what the Lord can do with a life that refuses to be defined by fear.
The pacing? Seamless. The setting? Rich without ever distracting. The writing? Fresh, immersive, and emotionally grounded. There were moments I could smell the dust in the air and hear the creak of saddle leather. Others where I felt like I was standing right next to Ella, watching her grow into the freedom and peace she fought hard to find.
If you're after a story where faith is lived, where ranch life meets real-life mess, and where God’s goodness doesn’t wait for perfection—this one will bless you like it did me. These loveable characters are the kind of people you pray for, root for, and feel better for having known. Then it hits you—they’re fictional. :)
I received a digital ARC of this book from Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on writing and story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
This was my first read by this author and I was completely captivated from the beginning! I loved it so much! Ella is escaping from her abusive family and fiancé. Cody has had 3 children under the age of six thrown into his lap. When he comes across Ella who needs tending he brings her to his sister’s home. His kids need a mother and Ella needs an escape. So yes, we have a marriage of convenience! I love marriage of convenience and this one is really good. I loved how their relationship progressed. They have both been hurt by past relationships so they work together to get through that. But oh I just loved it. I love the kids as well they are a great part of the story. I also loved Cody’s sister and brother-in- law. Of course Ella isn’t safe and her father and ex fiancé come after her which leads to a lot of dangerous situations. There is also great Christian content. I really loved this story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Lovely romance about a marriage of convenience in the late 1880s Montana Territory. Lauralyn writes her books with a lot of layers so the marriage also includes 3 recently orphaned young kids and the adjustment to that. This book also has a bit of mystery and suspense as well. I could not put this down once I started reading and Lauralyn sets up Book 2 in the series really well. I’m excited to read it.
This page-turning marriage-of-convenience story caught my attention from the story blurb and held it all the way through the tender-hearted romance filled with drama and a bit of suspense. Ella Mountbatten and Cody Brooks married for strictly practical purposes and had low expectations for their relationship, neither assuming that love would be part of their equation. But God had other ideas as the pair got to know each other and adjusted to their new roles as husband and wife as well as Mama and Papa to three orphaned children left in Cody’s care. This captivating tale was a juxtaposition of how sweet their family life could be on the ranch at the same time they faced numerous, dangerous threats. I was kept on the edge of my seat as I wondered what incident could befall the young couple next. I loved the character development as Ella adjusted to her new life in a completely different location and helped Cody to grow and move on from past trauma that had gripped him for years. A truly inspiring and endearing tale. I look forward to reading more from this new-to-me author!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.
This is my first book by this author and I can’t wait to read more. She had me engaged from the beginning and I was blown away by some of the twists and turns. At times it was like oh no what next and other times I was laughing at the kids. These were hard times for people and marriages of convenience were a common occurrence but this added a few surprises that made it very interesting. I loved the characters and was rooting them on to succeed and make a family for those adorable, lovable children. The book flowed at a steady pace and had me wanting to see the outcome but not wanting it to end. I loved that they prayed and never lost faith during the testing and trials. Great characters that felt like family when you finished. Give this author a try and step back in time to 1887 from the streets of Boston to the rugged territory of Montana. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit/Wild Heart Books. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
There is nothing better than to read about a character who finds hope, protection and love in an unexpected way. I loved the time period and how marriage of convenience was a reality for many. As we get to know Ella there is a feeling of hopelessness settling inside her. It was hard to understand why her father was so adamant about her marrying someone who physically abuses her. Ella is desperate to get away and finds her chance with the help of her sister. I liked how brave Ella was as she began a new chapter in her life.
Cody sure has his hands full when he becomes the guardian of three young children. He sometimes feels like giving up but his love for the children keep him going. The author does a great job of describing the struggles he faces and how exhausting it is running a ranch and raising these precious children. When it is suggested that he needs a wife hope starts to come over him.
I liked how Ella and Cody find a way to help each other out. Cody is gentle and kind with Ella but he is very protective of her. Standing up to Ella’s father gives her a sense of security. The story does deal with a sensitive topic but is handled with grace. Their relationship starts slowly but oh how beautiful it is. I appreciate how Ella steps up to care for the children and helps them with the loss of their parents.
The story is not without a little danger as Ella’s father is determined to get his daughter away from Cody. It surprised me at how far her father will go to control his daughter. Her father tries everything to break up Ella’s marriage but I think it brought her and Cody closer together. I like how they each share their past and learn to trust each other. Will this marriage become more than a convenience for Ella and Cody?
“Family is a place where those hurts and struggles can be shared and eased in a healthy way, through love and grace.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This is the first book in the series Second Chances in Harmony Springs and the first book I’ve read by this author. Ella, who grew up in Boston, is determined to escape the abuse and manipulation that will become her future if she doesn’t find a way to leave. She slips away and heads west, following an open invitation from an old friend back home. That friend, Travis, introduces her to Cody—who has unexpectedly become the guardian of three young children in desperate need of stability and a mother figure. Together, Ella and Cody strike an agreement that slowly blossoms into something deeper. I enjoyed this story, the character development, the pacing, and the way the plot unfolded kept me invested from start to finish. The author handled the marriage-of-convenience trope beautifully, allowing the relationship to grow naturally throughout the book rather than cramming everything into the final chapter. The touch of mystery and crime added an extra layer of intrigue, and who can resist a strong, protective male lead?
Favorite quotes: Kids have a way of asking honest questions and I thought this was a great response that she gave… “Do you remember when we planted seeds in this garden?” He nodded. “Did the vegetables start growing right away?” “No.” “That’s what it’s like with a baby. A seed has to be planted in my tummy before one can start growing. It has to be the right time too. If we planted seeds in the garden during the winter, they wouldn’t grow. It’s the same for a baby. The right conditions have to be there before it can be planted.”
A battered woman, a desperate man, and three orphaned children are thrust together to form a family none are too sure of. However, for survival this marriage of convenience needs to work, and it was a good one.
Ella Mountbatten has run away not only from a controlling family, but an abusive fiancé as well. Running to her longtime friend now turned sheriff for help. What she finds out west is more than she bargained for, a husband and three young children.
Cody Brooks has become the guardian to three young children, one a baby. Not only is he a single man, but he has a ranch to run as well. When his brother-in-law suggests a wife, Cody begins to see the reason in that. And at the right time, into his life walks Ella, who has some issues herself.
Starting out as just a marriage of convenience, these two quickly learn that they can rely on one another in the day-to-day chores, even with their past hurts. But when danger follows Ella from home, it will take all of their wits and love to stay alive because neither her father nor fiancé is ready to let her go. Just how much is Cody and Ella willing to sacrifice for one another?
This was a fun one, with plenty of heart, romance, and danger that really pulls you in this story. It is certainly one I will be rereading, and I cannot recommend it enough.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
“The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride” by Lauralyn Keller is a great book to curl up and read. But get comfortable because you will not be able to put it down! Keller pulls you into the 1800 western town in Montana territory by her colorful descriptions, interesting storylines, and fun characters. In “The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride” Keller transports you to Harmony Springs, a dusty frontier town full of good people. I could almost taste the dust covering Ella Mountbatten as she stepped off of the train in Harmony Springs. Keller keeps you on the edge of your seat with the interesting storylines and crazy plot twists. If you like adventure, peril, and exciting rescues, hold on to your hat because you are in for a wild ride! However, the greatest part of the book is not the fun imagery and thrilling plot lines. Keller lets her characters have real feelings, real hardships, and real faith. Keller shows how two very real and hurting people face hardship, not only with each other, but with God every step of the way. Ella finds out that no matter what abuse she has been through God will always love her. And Cody discovers that you have to give God the control of your life so He can protect us and those we love. In this book you can find a good story that teaches even greater lessons. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher but was not paid or required to write a positive review. This is my original opinion of “The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride.”
Christian Historical Fiction is a favorite genre to read. The Rancher's Unexpected Bride by Lauralyn Keller is Book 1 in the Second Chances in Harmony Spring.
I was engrossed in the book from the first few pages. The setting begins in Boston and the majority of the book is set in Harmony Springs, Montana. The 2 main characters of this book are Ella Mountbatten and Cody Brooks. Ella is a Boston Socialite who feels she is being controlled by her parents and her fiancé. She finally decides to flee and heads to a small town in Montana, Harmony Springs. A former friend of hers is currently the Sheriff of this town. Cody Brooks, a resident of Harmony Springs, finds himself being the caregiver of his best friends 3 children after the friend dies. Cody doesn't feel ready to be the parent of 3 children under 6. He and Ella meet when she arrives in town and he recognizes that she needs a safe place to be. A friendship between Cody and Ella begins and Cody realizes that Ella might be an answer to prayer. He knows the kids need a mothers and Ella needs a safe place, especially with her Dad and fiance wanting her to return to Boston. I truly enjoyed this storyline. Ella and Cody's relationship grew as they got to know one another. They also began to have Faith in God that he will protect the family on their new journey. The book is one of Second Chances, Faith, and Family. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!
The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride is a wonderful historical fiction novel that you’re going to love, about a marriage of convenience. Oh, and a bachelor who inherits three orphans.
Ella has been through a lot. She may be high society, but that doesn’t mean her life is perfect. Her parents are harsh and unloving. Her fiancé is abusive and controlling. She’s in a cage with no real way out. When the opportunity presents itself for her to run away, she grabs it with both hands.
She runs off to the west where her friend lives. But how can she remain if people come for her?
Well, an easy answer is to be married!
Because her parents and an ex-fiancé can’t steal her away from her husband. She’s not in love. He doesn’t love her. But he can save her, and she can help raise the children he finds himself in possession of.
The characters are so amazing. They are strong and full of faith. Everything that Ella has been through and she still has a sweet and positive outlook on life. It’s definitely a novel I’d recommend and read again.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride by Lauralyn Keller is a Christian Historical Romance. Ella Mountbatten, a Boston socialite, has it all according to society. However, what they can not see is the abuse and cruelty she suffers at the hands of her fiancé and parents. Her bid for freedom takes her to the rugged land of Montana, putting her on a collision course with Harmony Springs and an ill-equipped rancher who finds himself acting as guardian for three orphaned children. The fact that one of her former friends is the community sheriff helps her quest for freedom.
The author does an excellent job of building a story that interests you. The characters are well-developed. I loved getting to know Ella and Cody and reading how their relationship and marriage of convenience turned into something more.
The story’s pace keeps your interest. As the first book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series, it provides the perfect introduction to this new series. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
So, if you want a Christian Historical Romance, check out The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride by Lauralyn Keller. I recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I loved everything about this story! It brought out all the feels for me! The main characters were very realistic for me which always make me related to the story more. Cody and Ella, although they married for convenience at first, were a couple that were very right for each other! Ella's ex-fiancée was a treacherous man and the reason she fled Boston for the Montana Territory. Cody was a rancher who suddenly was made guardian over 3 young children when their parents die in an accident. He doesn't know anything about being a father but tries his best. When they marry for convenience, they don't want love to enter the equation but then they don't anticipate Ella's father or ex-fiancée creating such terrible conditions for them! I loved the way they bonded over the adversity and the 3 young children were adorable! Cody's sister and brother-in-law were great characters also. There was a lot of action, romance and evil characters to boot! Looking forward to another book in the series!
This is the first book I've read by this author. It was an exciting and suspenseful read with intense times of danger, moments of fun, and lots of twists and turns. I also enjoyed the sweet, budding romance between Ariella and Cody. The antics of the orphan children that Cody was raising kept me laughing.
The book had everything I could ask for in an 1800s Western Romance. The writing was easy to read, the characters were heroic with many layers, and the faith elements were woven into just the right places. The town of Harmony Springs, Montana Territory descriptions, made me feel as though I was there watching things happen.
The tension and unexpected twists kept me turning pages, wondering what would happen next. One minute, I was laughing; the next, I was on the edge of my seat, and something else touched my heart with joy. I loved the ending, which wrapped everything up wonderfully—highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
The Ranchers Unexpected Bride, Lauralyn Keller, is the first book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. In this story we meet single rancher Cody and Ella, who is fleeing from powerful, demanding, abusive men. Cody finds himself suddenly a guardian to three children needing a wife to help him. Ella is desperate to make it impossible for her father to take her home, so offers to be his wife. This is such an enjoyable story to read. It is well written, easy to read and envision. It is such an inspirational story. It has wonderful characters that are very caring and watch out for each other. Cody and Ella were brought together at the perfect time to help each other. This is such a heartwarming story with how quickly the children warm up to Ella. I like how Ella is so quick to learn how to cook, take care of the home and help with the animals. This is an enjoyable book to read just for fun. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.
The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride by Lauralyn Keller is a truly endearing and engaging historical romance. It takes the reader on a heartwarming journey as two unlikely characters find their way to each other. Despite coming from very different worlds, their individual circumstances bring them together in the most unexpected way. Determined to make the most of their situation and face it head-on with honesty and resilience, they break through the barriers life has built, forming a unique bond and discovering a deeply rooted love over time.
This story is beautifully written with relatable characters. Keller weaves a narrative that draws readers in, allowing them to envision and feel the story almost as if they are experiencing it firsthand. If you love heartfelt historical romances with strong, compelling characters and a happy ending, this book is a wonderful choice and well worth reading.
Author Lauralyn Keller is a “new to me” author so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, I am anxiously awaiting book 2 in the Second Chances in Harmony Spring series. Once I started to read The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride I couldn’t put it down. Nor did I want to.
Marriage of convenience is my favorite trope, and Keller did a good job with it. Not only was Ella running from Boston, but she agrees to take on three orphaned children along with a stranger husband. Lots happening there!
Of course Boston won’t let her go easily so Cody becomes the perfect hero. And what a hero. He protects those he cares about. And he comes to care about Ella. But will love happen?
If you enjoy Christian historical fiction with a sweet, clean romance and three adorable children give it a read. I think you’ll enjoy it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
" The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride" by Lauralyn Keller is a novel of a marriage of convenience. I was kept turning the pages from the first page to the end. My heart was sad for Ella and Cody's circumstances. Yes, this book is a romance, but it is also a bit of a mystery in why Ella's father and her former finance, (the one she ran away from) determine to do everything they can to bring her back to Boston. If you have read many novels like this then I'm sure that you probably know the reason, but I can't tell you why because it will be a spoiled alert, but I can tell you even if you do know the reason this book is a worthwhile read, and it will inspire your heart. I really like the way Cody and Ella learn to share past heartaches and overcome together. The three children that Cody has taken to raise melted my heart.
I received a complimented copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
A compelling story from a new-to-me author. There is a nice flow to the writing style and plot. There is a faith-element as the characters battled through trials and hardships. The past is dangerous for Ella, who finds her safety in a marriage of convenience to Cody, who is at his wit’s end trying to be guardian to three orphaned children. It’s an unconventional family, but it is their family.
I liked the chemistry between Ella and Cody. They both have fears and insecurities, but when they give their trust to each other, they are steadfast with no doubts. They become each other’s anchor and fight for their future. I would definitely re-visit this novel.
I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
The Rancher's Unexpected Bride is the first book from the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series by new to me author, Lauralyn Keller. I thought it was a good introduction for me. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters, Ella and Cody. The two took me on a adventure that was suspenseful and dangerous at time. It was not a long story to read and I easily had it read in one sitting. I am going to give The Rancher's Unexpected Bride four and a half stars. I recommend it for fans of clean historical romance. I am curious to see what happens in the next installment from the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series, The Reverend's Second Chance.
I received a paperback copy of Lauralyn Keller's The Rancher's Unexpected Bride from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Harmony Springs, Montana is where the train took Ariella when she finally had the courage to leave her abuser in Boston. Her hope was that her old friend Travis, now a Sheriff, would be able to protect her. Is she far enough away that she cannot be found? Only time will tell.
Cody Brooks, a rancher, has suddenly been thrust into the guardianship of his best friend’s three children upon the death of their parents. Ranching he knows - parenting not so much. He is going to need help. Can two helpless souls rescue each other?
An early copy of Second Chances in Harmony Springs Book 1 was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
The Ranchers Unexpected Bride by Lauralyn Keller is the first exciting book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs Series. It begins with the problems facing Ella Mountbatten and Cody Brooks, with temporary fixings in place but no lasting solutions. But God, what wonderful words, has plans for these two that they can’t see having not met yet. The marriage of convenience after having met give three orphans parents, Cody a wife to help and Ella a protector. Still, this is just the beginning so much more is to come in their lives.
What a fabulous read. Quietly God is at work using these characters and friends, building their faith and putting their faith into action. I highly recommend this Christian historical fictional romance to all.
I enjoyed this marriage of convenience story. I liked how brave Ella was to leave the life she knew to find safety. I also liked how brave Cody was to adopted his friend’s orphaned children and then be willing to marry Ella even before he knew her. I loved how they became a family and how Cody and Ella fell in love through the small everyday things. I also liked that they had friends who were willing to help them through all the threats to them. I liked how brave these characters were and that we saw healing for each of them as they worked to become a family.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This book is so good! I fell in love with all the characters and the children made my heart melt. The romance was so swoony and was emotionaly charged by all the up and downs Ella and Cody shared. Handling the childrens trauma, Ella’s horrid fiance, and father only drew Ella and Cody together; fully drawing the reader in. I found myself on the edge of my seat with all the bad guys trying to rip Ella from Cody. Every attempt had me holding my breath. This is a entertaining book that deserves 10 stars. Every page held my attention and I didn't want the story to end! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
When Ella flees Boston and arrives in Harmony Sorings she is praying her dear friend still lives there. She is running from her fiancé and her father and hoping she will finally be safe.
Cody has had a difficult life and now he is left to raise his friend’s three children after their untimely death. He needs help but too proud to admit it. When he meets Ella it may be they can help each other.
This is a sweet love story with a threat of violence and questions of who is behind the accidents that are plaguing them. It has a happy ending. I enjoyed it.
Tbh, I was a little bit hesitant about this book, because it was my first contact with Lauralyn Keller. But by the end of the book, I knew I have found another favorite. I love this book because of the vulnerability of Ella and Cody. I loved the subtle boldness that Ella discovered with Cody. And Cody's love reminds me of what it means to be loved by Christ — oh, that is the greatest treasure in this book. In every sacrifice Cody made, in every kindness he showed, in every tenderness he poured, I could see Jesus. Thank you, Lauralyn for this gem.
I loved this story of Ella and Cody. She escaped a horrific fiancé who was sadistic. When she arrives in a small town in Montana, she begins to feel freedom. Cody is a tortured man who is struggling to get his ranch back in the black. Then, he becomes the father of three very young children. He’s drowning in despair and feels hopeless. Then he meets Ella. It’s a tad rocky at first, but theirs is a beautiful love story. I loved how the author describes their relationship.
This is the first book in Keller’s Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. It’s got loveable characters (especially the adorable children), evil villains, a marriage of convenience, swoony kisses, heart-stopping plot twists, and a bit more violence than I really like in a story. I was glad that things resolved well.
