Wow !!

S.C. Selby’s debut novel is a fast-paced romantasy with compelling found family dynamics and strong character development. The plot is straightforward but remains engaging throughout.

The story follows Elle—short for Elysia—who grew up in a village with her parents. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that they aren’t her biological parents. Elle is, in fact, the rightful heir to the throne.

Her adoptive parents have been hiding her ever since her birth parents were killed and the throne was usurped by the current Queen. This Queen is notorious for hunting and killing mages, which adds another layer of danger and urgency to Elle’s hidden identity.

When Elle encounters the rebels and uncovers the truth about her lineage, she resolves to take back what is rightfully hers.

My Thoughts

Elle, despite being the “chosen one,” is a refreshingly relatable protagonist. It’s easy to connect with her struggles and emotions. She doesn’t come across as overly powerful, nor does everything fall neatly into place for her. The more Elle learns about her identity and her past, the more she loses. She isn’t handed everything she wants just because she’s the heir and a strong mage, and I really appreciated that complexity.

The found family aspect is a lovely addition, particularly since much of the story focuses on Elle’s time with the rebels. Over time, her relationships with them evolve beyond mere alliances to genuine friendships, and eventually, they feel like family. However, I would have loved more depth in some of these relationships. Certain characters didn’t get enough time or meaningful interactions to make their connections with Elle feel fully fleshed out.

Special mention to Eshe—she’s fantastic! Eshe is a strong, capable bodyguard who commands respect. No one questions her abilities because of her gender, which is so refreshing to see. She often acted as some sort of glue, holding the band together or making characters own up to their own actions. Kinda like.. the voice of reason ? I really liked her.. I wish we got more backstory for her.

Soren though.. I have mixed feelings. While this isn’t a fated mates story, his early attraction to Elle felt almost too magical or inexplicable, making me question whether it was genuine. In truth, because of that, I didn’t really care about him at first. However, around the halfway mark, I started warming up to him as his character became more fleshed out. Once Soren and Elle began building a more authentic emotional connection, I found myself rooting for them.

One of Soren’s standout qualities is his emotional intelligence. He doesn’t make assumptions about Elle’s feelings, nor does he take her for granted. Instead, he approaches their relationship with care and empathy. This was a breath of fresh air compared to many male main characters in romance, who often lack this level of nuance. In this case, Soren’s emotional awareness added depth and made their relationship more satisfying as it developed.

Overall, this debut is an enjoyable read with a solid blend of romance, fantasy, and character-driven storytelling. While I wish certain relationships had been explored more deeply, the plot and characters make it worth the read.

I can’t wait for book 2 ! 🫶🏻

I’d like to thank the author for providing a free copy of her book in exchange of my honest review.

writing this review as a ARC and wow this book had me hooked from the first few pages. The book is a page turner and i found myself not wanting it to end. Elle definitely goes through a lot and I can agree with the other reviews she is a badass. Soren is another character that I adore, and is always there to help. All the characters in fact are written very well and I found myself liking each one for various different reasons.
I found myself laughing out loud, yelling at situations in the book and characters in the book, and getting emotional. this book definitely has it all when it comes to your emotions. A bit of everything for everyone.
I can't wait for the second book to come out! This is definitely a reread many times over and I would recommend this title and story to everyone.

★★★★☆

I was sent an e-ARC of this book through a Facebook group.

This is my first ever ARC experience and i'm super grateful to be experiencing it with this author. Thank you for this opportunity!

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book (which is obviously why i signed up for the ARC hehe) & it did not disappoint. The plot was plotting in this book.
Even though the pacing of the book felt a bit unbalanced at times, the plot progressed in a logical way.
Elle, the main female character, was like a breath of fresh air. She's not afraid to speak her mind & she does what she wants, even when it might bring trouble...
As a big family person I also enjoyed the family aspects in this story. I might have cried multiple times, which is not a surprise to those people who actually know me. Both the actual family as well as the found family have my heart ♥︎.

I was definitely (still am) rooting for one guy in particular for Elle to end up with, please, i need to see them actually be together in the next book!

At the beginning of the book I had some trouble with staying motivated to read this, which is not 100% the book but also my mental state! About 40% into the book I really got into it & finished it within no time.

That plot twist at the end??? Where can I sign up for the ARC of the next book??? I really need the answers ASAP!!

I really recommend this book, it's a quick & fun read, with amazing characters, an interesting plot & an owl I actually need for my postal services!

I shouldn’t review my own book, but I am DEFINITELY counting it toward my reading goal since I’ve read it six million times.

Anyway, if you like closed door, fantasy romance with reluctant heroines, found family, hidden heritages, and a quest, this might be for you. Add in a dash of she takes care of him and a tablespoon of only one bed… TADA!

I honestly can’t believe this is S.C. Selby’s debut novel!

From the first page I was sucked into a kingdom that had lost their King and Queen to someone evil and mages are now being hunted and into hiding.

Little does the evil queen know that before she over threw the castle the queen saved the only heir to the throne. A powerful heir to the throne a that.

The story never stops moving and developing. I became attached to all the characters finding something uniquely fun and inspiring about each one.
We find out why each person May they be mage or human is joining the rebellion.

The story moves all over the kingdom. We get glimpses of how things are being ran and what fear the Queen has put into place.

Not everything appears as you may think! There are so many secrets.

There are some triggers which are at the beginning of the book. The author does address them well. However, this book will tug at all the emotions.

I highly recommend this book!! And cannot wait for the second!!

What a debut novel by SC Selby!
4.5 ⭐️

This is an amazing start to this series. It took me a little longer to read this book that I normally do, due to the level of detail and world building in it. (Very similar to other very well known fantasy books in that regard). Very well written, but not too heavy that you get confused.

Twists, turns, true shocks thrown into the storyline, thickening plots, heartbreak that nearly had me sobbing on public transport, and an uber slow burn romance being set up.

I can’t wait to read book two - The Queen’s reign - especially after that very last line! 🤯

I received this book as an ARC and I’m very happily leaving this review.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review, and it’s one of the best ARCs I’ve ever read. Elle’s story captivated me from the very beginning, and I’m already eagerly anticipating the second book in the series.

This fantasy novel strikes a wonderful balance with its light tone and touch of humor, making it an enjoyable read from start to finish. The pacing reminded me of Spark of the Everflame, steady and engaging throughout. While the ending didn’t include a massive cliffhanger, it left just enough intrigue to have me excited for what’s next.

The writing style felt unique, but I adapted to it quickly, which only added to the charm of the story. However, I did notice that some scenes transitioned a bit awkwardly, and a few moments could have benefited from being longer and more detailed to enhance the immersion.

The book offers a fantastic mix of beloved fantasy elements, including:

✨Slow burn romance
✨Found family
✨Hidden heritage and magic
✨A reluctant heroine

Overall, this is a highly entertaining read that I’d recommend to anyone who loves character driven fantasy with a light hearted twist.

A Secret Queen, an Evil Monarch, and…Dad Jokes?

First of all, this is a debut novel, and I can’t express properly how stunned I am by this. It’s no easy feat to write fantasy, especially when you’re creating your own world. And my goodness, this world is very well-formed. The characters are believable and fully formed, the settings are easy to visualize, the action scenes are coherent, and, just overall, the world-building is top notch. Think 1800s but fantasy, and you’ll know what I mean.

This book is also long, not that I was ever bored. The word “epic” comes to mind, and yet doesn’t fully describe the scope of this novel. So prepare snacks and hydration, get in your best comfy chair or reading nook, and settle in, because you might not want to put this one down.

And yes, there really are some dad jokes in here, which actually delighted me, as those jokes reminded me of my own father, who has been gone from this realm for almost twenty years. You would think such a reminder would make me sad, but I laughed out loud, hearing my father’s voice in my head as I read each dad joke. It’s a precious gift that I hadn’t anticipated.

The novel begins with a bang, as a woman is running through a castle with a bundle in her arms. She gives said bundle to a man she trusts implicitly, and tells him to get her as far away as possible. This bundle, of course, is Elysia, the two-month old daughter of King Arduin and Queen Calantha, and their kingdom Caerwyn is about to fall to an unhinged ruler named Keres. Oh, sure, Keres looks pretty on the outside, can fake a smile and seem genuine, but inside, this one is one hundred percent rotten. Zero redeeming qualities. Also, she seems to have a problem with magic users, as in she has a problem with them existing. So many innocent people put to death just because of who they are.

We jump ahead to a couple of decades or so later, with grown-up Elle (as most people call her) finding out she isn’t who she thinks she is. She had plans and dreams for her life, all of which go up in smoke when she learns she’s the true heir of Caerwyn, and only she can save her people by leading a revolution.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, with a revelation that I’d had an inkling about for the last third of the book. That said, I can’t wait for the conclusion, and for whatever else S.C. Selby wants to throw at me. Excellent work from a very talented author.

Before I begin, I would like to thank S.C. Selby for allowing me to read her upcoming book, The King’s Quartet, which will be available on Amazon on January 15th, 2025.

Being a mage is dangerous in Eabha. When Elle encounters a handsome person in Vesna, she starts questioning the rulers of the kingdom. The more Elle learns about her past, the more she understands that she needs to choose what to fight for, die for, and who she can rely on for support. Her dedication to protecting the kingdom and her loved ones is tested as tensions rise, to the point she might crumble barely before her fight for the people begins.

I absolutely loved this book. Elle is an intelligent, crafty, sassy, loyal, and beautiful young woman that wants to protect her loved ones and help them live without fear. You have Soren, a handsome, grumpy, and determined young man that tries to help those in need and fight against oppression. The interactions between Elle and her family were sweet, and those with Soren were pointed (she got him good a lot of times), honest, and funny. The worldbuilding and history of how the current rulers of Eabha came to power were well written. The prologue was a nice touch that helped weave the premise of the story better. I liked the different POVs, not just of Elle and Soren, that appeared to show the complexity and thought processes of the other characters that the reader wouldn’t have gotten from solely either a single or dual POV. The interactions between the found family that came together as the story progressed were funny, heartfelt, and engaging. This story does end in a cliffhanger, but honestly, I’m not even mad because I enjoyed what I read so much. Overall, if you like humor, wonderful found family, great worldbuilding, complex characters, fantasy, plots, elements of faith, and hidden identities, then I would highly recommend this book.

Hi, first I would like to give thanks to S.C. Selby for the chance of reading firsthand The King's Quartet , this ARC read is oficially one of my favorites.

Let's give a standing ovation to the way every emotional moment is written through the book; the description shows the reader a way to experience and gaining an affinity with each emotion from Elysia. It's amazing how a well-written description of emotions like pain, anger and grief allows readers to connect with characters and their battles.

The development in her character is incredible; the transitions through the book and each chapter bring out a cozy or homey touches, while also allowing the reader to follow and be shocked by the story (and the cliffhangers) and its flow.

About the FMC, I absolutely loved her personality, her femininity, strength, her emotional awareness, her anger and sadness and desire of justice (she's badass), while the love triangle it's present it not overpowering, (I would like to formally ask for the "I fell for Soren" fan club) and it allows the political plot to be the main story, it shows the complexity of each character, including the "shady" ones that can be seen as charming.

Beware chapter 35; have tissues and a reassuring beverage to hydrate, (my only "spoiler").

Prepare to get hooked with this first book. You will laugh (very bad jokes will be present) and cry (I already warned you) while reading and living the first part of Elysia's story.

I'll wait (not really waiting, more like the meme from a dude connecting dots to maybe guess what's next) very enthusiastically and patiently for the next part of the story of Elysia and Soren.

The King's Quartet is a breathtaking journey into a world where magic, adventure, and heartwarming relationships come to life. S.C Selby's debut novel weaves a rich tapestry of vivid landscapes, unforgettable characters, and a plot that grips you from the very first page.

The world-building is exquisite. Selby has crafted a realm so immersive, it feels like the reader is stepping through a portal into another world. From bustling magical marketplaces and intricate kingdoms, every corner of this world is filled with wonder and mystery. The magical system is both unique and it adds depth to the story without overwhelming the plot.

The characters are the beating heart of the novel. The heroine, Elle, is a strong yet vulnerable protagonist whose personal growth is both inspiring and relatable. Her journey is filled with challenges, and moments of self-discovery. The supporting cast, from the witty and charming body guards to the selfless and intriguing gunsmith, adds layers of complexity and emotion, making them just as memorable as Elle herself.

The King's Quartet has its sense of hope and the themes of friendship, loyalty, and perseverance. Despite the trials and tribulations the characters face, the story always reminds us of the power of light in the darkest of times. The pacing is perfect, with just the right balance of action, suspense, and quieter, more introspective moments.

With its enchanting world, captivating characters, and an empowering message, The King's Quartet is a must-read for fans of fantasy. S.C. Selby has created a magical masterpiece that will leave readers eagerly awaiting her next adventure.

The King’s Quartet by S. C. Selby

Fantasy

Elle, after finding out that her parents aren’t her real parents and she’s actually heir to the throne and her real parents died when the castle was invaded, is thrust into the middle of a rebellion to put her back on the throne so that she can save the mages from being hunted and slaughtered.

“You were made to meet that ocean, made to reach for that horizon, Elysia Helaine.” A quote from The King’s Quartet by S. C. Selby.

I enjoyed seeing Elle grow emotionally and realize she can be much more than what she thinks she can be. I felt like it was hard to determine which time period this world was based in, when I read I watch the story in my mind like it’s a movie but the world building confused me. I thought that the world building was great, just some pieces threw me off on which time period I should be in my mind. At first I thought it would be sword and sorcery, but then the author added pistols and used phrases like “clicked on the lamp” and I couldn’t quite figure it out which made it harder to be in the story. However, it is fantasy and I understand a story can be whatever anyone wants and it was a good read and if things like I mentioned above doesn’t bother you, I would definitely recommend this book. I am going to give this book a 4 star rating but if you aren’t bothered by what I mentioned then this could be your next 5 star read!

I received an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The King’s Quartet is packed with complex relationships, political intrigue, a secret heritage and a slow, delicious burn. Elysia and Soren’s romance is one of my favorites I have read in a while. The relationships, both friendships and love interests are refreshing and pure. There also is a little love triangle action!

Elysia is the long lost queen to Eabha. She lives her life as a barmaid without any idea of her true identity until Soren and his friends find her, based on a gut feeling alone.

Think forbidden magic with a quest for a crown to protect her people even if she has to be morally grey to do it. If you love the Throne of Glass series you will love AKQ!

The did note there wasn’t some breaks between transitioning scenes which made it confusing at some points and made me re-read.

This review was based off an advanced reawder’s copy. Thank you to the S.C. Selby and team for providing me to with an eARC in exchange an honest review! As always, all opinions are my own.

I really loved this book!! I received an advanced copy of it. This is a fantasy story and with that -anything goes. I quickly fell in love with Elle and was ready to ride on with her adventure. Unknown to her she was hidden away as an infant due to her royal status when an evil Queen massacred her family and as many mages the Queen’s army could find. She was placed with a childless couple and enjoyed a normal childhood even though she possesses massive mage power and her challenge is to defeat the Queen and win back the throne and save her people. This came as quite a shock to her given the news was suddenly thrust upon her by strangers who found her after looking everywhere for not knowing if Elle even existed. Magic? Luck? Destiny? It’s all intriguing. Follow along on her adventures as she learns to trust and depend on total strangers who consistently remind her of her true identity and the hope they have placed on her shoulders. So many twists in the story as well as possible romance brewing. Who should she trust? Are there moles in her circle?

This debut fantasy began so strong, with Witcher meets Willow meets Red Queen vibes. The characters were immediately enjoyable and the initial interactions were delightful. There’s a band of friends with great chemistry, and the FMC, Elle, had excellent relationships with all the people in her life. One thing that especially touched me was her strong relationship with her adopted parents – (healthy) true love isn’t shown enough in fantasy books and so this element was especially beautiful to me.

And while I continued to enjoy the characters and their interactions, the vibe changed. As Elle embraced the sudden twist of her life’s path, the scenery changed, new characters were introduced, but… the plan never fully materialized. So much of the plot of this book was just existing, so while everything was well written, it wasn’t very dramatic.

If the book is categorized as a romance, there needs to be more romance. If it’s a fantasy, it needs more fantasy. (I love the different powers that are represented, there just needs to be more of it.) The writing was lovely and it was beautifully proofed (so important in an indie book!) But the pacing was off.

The beginning and ending of the book were the best parts of the story. I got teary at the final scene with the FMC – I felt it. And at the veeeery end, a nice twist. With worthy characters in place, I’m excited to see some sparks fly – book #2 is primed for a promising start.

I have no words, this book was absolutely enchanting and deserves 5- stars. By the time I got to chapter 2 I was already in love with Elle, Soren and the story line. The Kings quartet by S. C. Selby pulls you into their world immediately. The burn felt between the characters kept me kicking my feet in anticipation, but was evenly balanced between the need to help the kingdom and the friendships made. I highly recommend this debut novel for anyone who likes lost leaders, rebellions, slow burns, magic and forced(semi loose term) relationships. Selby did an amazing job encapsulating everything needed for a great story with just enough fluff that you weren’t bored of the characters (we’ve all had those chapters we’ve dreaded to get through). I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for us!

Thank you for the opportunity to be one of the first to experience this world <3

I had the pleasure of reading this book as an ARC reader. Here are some things you can expect: She takes care of him, he comforts her, inner strength, heartbreak, magic, and hidden family. This story kept me on edge from start to finish. The events leading to Elle’s introduction were utterly captivating. Just as her life seemed on a clear path, three strangers appeared and turned everything upside down. Without giving too much away, you’ll find yourself turning page after page to uncover what happens next. Even after finishing, this story lingered in my mind. I can’t wait to see what’s next! When a reluctant heroine discovers she's the long-lost princess with magical abilities, Elle faces a life-altering choice: accept her destiny and save her kingdom, or hide. On her epic journey of self-discovery, she will experience love, loss, and learn to harness her newfound powers. The book introduces a cast of endearing characters who come together with a shared purpose, to take over the kingdom. With just a hint of romance, Selby crafts a captivating plot that kept me hooked all the way to the final page. This debut novel is nothing short of remarkable, and that cliffhanger ending left me eagerly anticipating the next installment!

Overall, I enjoyed the book. While there were a few developmental issues with pacing and how different reveals were broken up, it wasn't enough to stop my enjoyment of the amazing story. And with the ending reveal, I am going to be holding my breath for the next book, which has been set up to be high-stakes, high-action, and most importantly of all, a chance for Elle to truly take up her place as Queen. And I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Elle's story is one for the books. No pun intended. This debut novel from S.C. Selby hits all the right spots. There's world-building. There's Mages. There's politics. Everything you need to make a top-tier series.

The twists and turns throughout had me reading this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. The turmoil and feelings that were tossed at you had me tearing up through an entire chapter. That doesn't happen often. Then you have Elle and Soren's excruciatingly slow, slow, steamy burn. You just can't get enough of it.

What a great start to discovering a new epic world. I can't wait for the next installment into the world of Eabha.

I was lucky enough to get chosen to receive this book as an ARC. This was a great read from beginning to end. The story has some Throne of Glass vibes while still being unique. This is a slow burn romantasy. Don't expect really any spice in this one, though I think I can feel it coming in book 2? I enjoyed the reluctant heroine and found family tropes very much. Each character was interesting and fun and played a good role in the story. There are twists and turns, some you might see coming, others are were shocking. Really, the only thing keeping this from being 5 stars for me was some of the jumps to new seems felt jarring. But I see a lot of potential for this series and this author.

A great debut novel by S. C. Selby.

I so enjoyed this novel from the start. Her attention to the details of her world building and character development were spot on.

Ms. Selby hit all the romantasy tropes that we readers of this genre enjoy but did so with a fresh, new storyline that I have not read before. That's what kept my interest from the beginning to the end.

There were many of the characters that I liked, but my two favorites are Elle and Soren. I'm rooting for the two of them.

And then that revelation at the end.

I can't wait for the next book to see where this story takes us.

I really loved the vibes of this book....until around the 3/4 mark when I realized everything was going to be dragged out until the sequel with basically no resolution. There were a lot of elements I really enjoyed, particularly how multi-faceted the characters were that made them more realistic rather than simple archetypes. I didn't care for the excessive cast, abrupt changes in the story mid-page or the amount of crying from Elle which became exasperating. I am curious about what is going to happen next but need more plot in the sequel to be enticed to follow up.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.

This book has it ALL!! Found family? Check. Hidden Identity? Check. Intrigue, mystery, angst, tension, adventure? Check. Growing feelings and conflicting emotions? Check. This debut novel is a masterful telling of personal growth, political intrigue, loss, betrayal, redemption and love. Not just romantic love, but the love of community, naughtiest, and friends. What one would do for that love and far you might go to protect those who mean the most to you. S. C. Selby is a premiering author to keep an eye on. Don’t miss this book. 1000 stars 🌟

This one had me hooked from the very first page! If I didn’t know this was SC Selby’s debut novel I wouldn’t believe it!

This is going to be such a good fantasy series. The world building, and detail that was put into all the characters reminded me of some of the VERY popular romantasy series that are out there. I don’t want to go into detail because I honestly don’t want to spoil anything. All I can say is I love Elle and everyone needs this one, especially if you like strong FMCs, found family, and slow burns!

first of all i’d like to thank the author for giving me access to the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

the story was interesting and intriguing, and i really liked eshe! the author writes beautiful descriptions and there are some really good lines of dialogue.

unfortunately, the pacing was awkward, sometimes it felt like reading scene after scene without any coherent flow. it led to a bit of confusion sometimes.

however, for a first novel i think the author did a great job and the cliffhanger at the end left me wanting to know more!

First and foremost,

I cannot wait for the next book.

This book is for the romantics but also the lovers of fierce, badass women. The kind of women every girl needs in her life, along with the charming men. I am in awe of a certain chocolate eyed man and I couldn’t help but wish I was Elle because of him!

I truly loved every bit of this book. I am a very slow reader, i’ve been reading this for around a month now, but I finished the last 10 chapters in the span of a few short days. I ate it up and I need more, like ASAP!

Oh, and the woman who wrote this book is badass.

Wow! This story is amazing. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to have more in this series. I literally gasped at the end. This slow burn romance will have you on the edge of your seat. Elle is more resilient and powerful than she knows and I can’t wait to follow her on her journey. While we kind of have two love interests here, only one matters to me and I am rooting for these two so hard. I adored her found family and how they will always protect each other. 10/10 recommend.
