In the aftermath of being kidnapped by crazed mercury dragons, Kirani Kinsley Ramons dusts off her rusty skills and takes up the mantle of private investigator. With the dead growing more restless by the day and the fear of missing women in need of rescue looming before her, Kinsley dives into the case.
With her fiancé, her trusty carbunclo, and her hummingbird familiar at her side, Kinsley is ready for anything the world might toss at her.
As Kinsley unveils the identities of the missing and begins unraveling the mystery of their disappearances, she discovers there might be something far worse than a necromancer lurking within Dragon Heights. Uncertain of who to trust or where to turn, she seeks out the unlikeliest of the restless dead.
To save those lost in the darkness, Kinsley will have to put everything on the line, embracing the full power of her line, no matter the cost.
I had problems with the first book, I liked the premise a female Dragon with an affinity for the dead being hounded out of her job as a police officer after being accused of being a necromancer. Moving to a new city (Dragon Heights) she now lives surrounded by dragons turning her hand to any job to earn a living. Her boyfriend who she left behind when she moved follows her to Dragon Heights, Eric, he still works as a police officer. Kinsey is asked by her neighbour to look into a series of attacks which have happened to her employees. This requested Kinsey and Eric.down a rabbit hole leading to.human trafficking and necromancy being performed on the trafficked victims. Added to this awful outcome is.the fact the parties responsible for the crimes are dragons. Before long Kinsey is joined by her parents who turn out to be extremely wealthy and start showering gifts on Kinsey,, including exotic pets. This is usual fare for an R J Blain book and and wouldn't be an issue but in this book the wealth showered on Kinsey goes beyond ridiculous. Everywhere she goes she is being given discounts bonuses tax exemptions etc and red tape takes hours when processing Kinsey's dealings. Now I am all for flights of fancy but to have such a tragic criminal enterprise to investigate and treat the outcome so happily ever after strikes a wrong cord with me..................... Also I disliked the religious element included in this book as a Christian I found it disrespectful.
⭐️⭐️⭐️½ — A solid continuation, though not as tightly plotted as Book 1
Grave Intentions, the second instalment in Lilith Daniels’ Grave Affairs series, picks up right where Book 1 ended and continues to expand the world, its magic, and its dragon clans. One of the biggest shifts this time is the change in how the mystery unfolds. In the first book, Kinsley was hands-on and actively investigating each clue, bringing you along for every discovery. In this sequel, the plot leans much more on sudden connections and convenient revelations—like her unexpected inheritance of the Holy Grail—rather than grounded detective work. The dragons’ strong sense of justice remains a highlight, but at times it feels like they, along with wealth and influence, move the plot forward more than Kinsley’s own sleuthing.
The book does deepen the overarching story of the Mercury Dragons and the horrors committed by Madame Merorie. While she and her erased clan were undeniably monstrous in their actions, the added context of tragedy and mercury poisoning gives a clearer, sadder picture of how their actions. But this is discovered not by Kinsley and her detective work.
Despite that, I’m still invested in the series want to see where it goes—hopefully with a return to more boots-on-the-ground detective work and characters doing not just telling us.
3.5 stars — enjoyable and emotional, but missing some of the investigative sharpness that made the first book stand out.
2.5 stars - I enjoyed the first book immensely I gave it 4 stars, it was so promising, however there wasn't much investigation in book 2, her parents are just nipping off to strip clubs to investigate for them. Also they just so happen to find the Holy Grail mid investigation & nip off to the Vatican (insert eye roll). Also the over use of "snickered" is giving me PTSD & lowering my enjoyment each time I encounter it & that is a lot. Whatever happened to snorted, snarked, grumbled, laughed, snarled, said sarcastically, growled, huffed, retorted ..... the list of other words is endless. Hopefully the author will have time to read these less than 5 star reviews, as it could totally be a great series
I love this sequel. It is a continuation of the first book in the series, but make so much progress in the overall storyline and sets the tone for Ben more future books. Some of the issues get resolved while exposing others. I just love it. The author continues to do a hell of a job integrating current issues into her stories while worldbuilding a fantastic world parallel to ours if we had living dragons in it.
This is a very different series about dragons. I love Kinsley and am waiting for Erik to step forward and take his place as her partner. The Ramons, her parents, are hysterical. They certainly do not fit many parental patterns, except in the fact they love their daughter.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy and loves to laugh.
I really love an author who can carry you away and make you want to read all night. MS Daniels always does this for me. Starting with her first book and all the day through this second one. She has created a world society I wish we could have. Who doesn't want dragons? And makes you believe in it. I hope I get to read a third book soonest.
Highly recommend this author in all her pen names.
Kinsley and Erik are dealing with the aftermath of the mercury dragons' activities while building a new life together. Things are much more complicated than anyone guessed and the intentions behind the crimes become clearer. This was such a fantastically complex and satisfying read, and the development of the characters and the mystery were marvelous.
I really enjoyed reading how Kinsley's story unfolds. Her relationship with Eric and their pets lends heart. Her positive attitude to set things right and her successes kept me engrossed.
This is an excellent second book in this series! If you haven't yet done so, definitely start with the "Grave Affairs" the first book in the series. Very well worth it!!!
While still wild and wacky (to be expected with these dragons), I found this to more serious and dark than the first book in this series. I found this still enjoyable and imaginative - what would I be like with parents like the Ramons? What a scary thought ....
This series just keeps going in so many ways. You have so much to see happening that you just can't stop reading until the end. But even then then then story keeps going!
I am never dissatisfied by this author’s efforts and this second installment is sooo good! I think there is indication of another one coming in the future and these characters surely will haunt if not given another flight! 😂😂
This book was darker than the first one. I still enjoyed it-- except for the author's take on Jesus and Christianity. I definitely did enjoy getting to see our heroine grow into her powers, even if we didn't really see her getting much training.
Such a good second book in the series. Answered a lot of questions while setting up the third book. More serious in nature but still the amazing world built, and a great read
