Now repackaged and available only in "Annie and Brendan: Crushed" under the author's real name.
Brendan's graduated from San Francisco State and for the first time in four years, he's single. Not only that, he's standing right behind Annie, close enough to touch. But he's decided women can't be trusted and Annie's got blocks of her own, including one she never thought possible. Let the games begin because when two destined hearts meet, they throb, recognizing each other... even if they're sooooo not ready.
Sabrina Lacey was the pen name for author Faleena Hopkins when she was shyly first becoming an author. Since then, all of her works have been repackaged and republished under her own name, save for the I Love My...novels.
Surprised author hasn't tried to Copyright/Trademark "Hearts" yet, in case - you know - her readers can't distinguish between all the other books with that in the title. Since, oh, I don't know, reading the author's name instead of just assuming anything with "cocky" in the title is related to her series...because there haven't been a plethora of other books, pre-dating her stupid application that have "cocky" in the title...
Brendan Clark had loved one person his entire life. He could ran away with the boyfriend of the year award – but he was betrayed by the one person he trusted the most. She cheated on him and left him for another man. So, he decided enough was enough. He was now on the prowl – together with his buddy, Mark and the rest of the gang, there was no way he was letting any woman to break his heart once again. He will do casual, have sex out of necessity rather than emotions.
She had loved him since she first saw him, and Brendan had never even noticed that Annie was alive. Now, after four years, he’s single. It was her time to shine, to finally make the move for him to notice her. She had been waiting for this all her life.
But all her plans went into drain, and her heart were shattered all over he places when he notices her friend rather than her, and when her supposedly-friend jumped into her forever-love for a roll in the hay. Suddenly, she wanted to escape. She wanted some change – he saw her, but he didn’t really see her. She was just some girl not worth of any attention, and it was killing her. How can she loved him all this time, and just proved himself worthless of her emotions?
Then, she made a hasty decision to just get out of school, packed her bags and go to Europe. Five years later, she came back, eager to start a new in the city that had broken her heart.
It was short, sensual and casual. It’s amazing what broken hearts and betrayals can do to good people. It changes them – makes them hard, and makes them different. I was sad for Brandon and Annie, I wished Annie was brave enough to tell him about what she feels rather than ran away. Brandon wasn’t that bad, he wasn’t just in a good place at that time that Annie wanted that chance. But since this is just the first book, I am fervently crossing my fingers that fate would give them that chance they both needed in the next ones.

We don’t actually meet Annie until Chapter 4, which is a bit unusual for a central character. At the time of reading I was surprised, in hind sight; I can see where the author wanted to build the history as to how the situation came to be. Annie is a loner, stuck in a Goth phase but let’s face it she uses it as an emotional cover-up or crutch. She has only one friend, her roommate Corinne. Corinne is almost the antithesis of Annie with her pinup looks, extroverted personality, and often wild behavior. Annie prefers to be the wallflower. After a less than ideal situation and fight with Corinne, she realizes she’s simply been sad and lonely for a long time. Thrusting her entire life aside, she thrown caution to the wind and makes an abrupt and life altering change.
Brendan has had his heart shattered by his long-term girlfriend. He had doted over her for many years, choosing to ignore the womanizing ways of his closest friends. The only thing he ever wanted was to make Sara happy. Even when she up and moved across the country, Brendan was still crafting ways to make their relationship work. It wasn’t until she revealed she’s engaged to someone else did he figure out they were over. It was then he snapped and began to rethink he previously committed ways. He wondered why he’d been so respectful to her and in turn all women when they weren’t deserving of it. All he could see was the pain women caused the men around him. With this in mind, he sets about drastically revolutionizing his approach to women and decides it’s time to be like his friends, just having a string of one night stands without emotion involved. It’s then he makes some less than ideal decisions, but it’s those choices which lead his and Annie’s paths to cross—just not in the way you’d expect.
There are a couple of major points to you’ll want to remember while reading this story. First, it is the initial installment of a new series from Sabrina Lacey. Just when I thought I figured out what direction the plot was heading, I realized I was halfway through but there was no way it could finish in the portion that was left. Fortunately, I passed my blonde moment and remembered it’s just the first part. Secondly, any preconceived notions you have from reading the synopsis, just get rid of them. Situations kept occurring that made me angry, confusing me as to how this could possibly have any type of HEA; it broke girl code more than once. While reading I was cringing and want to get past the train wreck of situations that happen. Hold tight, by the conclusion of this first part there is light at the end of the tunnel.
In the end, after getting through it, I can see the validity of those not so great scenarios and see the bigger picture forming. While this may not have been the pleasant read I expected, stick with it because it’s interesting and intriguing. By the time I finished this first installment I wanted to have the second. This is definitely one of those times I curse the series gods for not having part 2 readily available. I want more, I need more.

This story was interesting. We meet Brendan and he has decided to go for hook-ups because he had just gone through a horrible break-up. He starts to go to parties again and hook-up with random girls. He seems to look right through Annie. He sees her best friend and immediately looks past Annie. He is kind of a tool about it. I get a broken heart and everything but treating women that way is never ok. I do feel bad for him though. The way his character is treated really isn’t fair. It is funny to me that he feels something when he looks at Annie but he is going to ignore it. Like every male out there lol.
Annie has been in love with the same guy since her freshmen year of college. The only problem is he doesn’t know she exists. She is a goth wearing hopeless romantic. She is sarcastic and a huge smart-ass. I actually liked her character a whole lot. She was honest and had high morals. I thought that she was very brave too, which you won’t see until the end of the book.
The writing flowed really well. I liked the fun little messages at the top of the page. They just held little details the author could have put in the book but I thought it was fun to read them before the chapter. The problem I had with the book was that the story really didn’t go anywhere. We met them and that is about it. We didn’t get any romance between the two of them. It felt more like a prequel novella than an actual novel. Other than that I really liked the book.
I found this story very juvenile. I don't mean in a YA sort of way. I've never read this others books, which seems to be all the rage in everyone else's reviews. To me, I found it annoying that each chapter started with stuff like.. 5 years before Mark married or Coffee: cold. To me, that's all things that would normally go into the story, and if you felt you had to explain it to me before I read, then you're not writing the type of story I want to read.
The "sex" was just, I mean, how do I say this and not be rude. The way Brendan talks about "squirting", yes, you were able to portray a college guy. But, it did nothing to interest me, the reader. I'm all for erotic, but that was just, crude.
The only reason this gets 3 stars is because when expressing pain, the author did well. I felt Annie's emotions. I could feel what she was going through. The betrayal, the pain. That was conveyed really well and this book's only saving grace.
But then the end, it just stops. I felt like it was a waste and why would I go buy another book? There was really no back story on these two characters. Where did they come from, who were they? Other than Brendan's failed relationship, you get nothing. It made it hard to connect to these two people. The rest of the series, book, whatever, may be good, but I don't feel I would waste my time with it, when this one left me feeling deflated and bored. I wouldn't waste my time recommending this either.
I received this book from Sabrina Lacey and “Paranormal Romance & Authors That Rock” in exchange for an honest review.
Annie is a junior in college and is totally in love with Brendan (also a college student). The only problem is that he doesn’t even know she exists. He’s right out of a break up, and on a mission for hook-ups. She’s shy and oh so sassy. Could they be meant for each other? Maybe! But you’ll have to read the rest of the books in the series because this ends on a total cliffhanger!
Brendan was definitely a hottie, and his confusion at the women’s mind was totally adorable. I would have liked to read more steamy scenes because it fell a little flat in that department. There were some witty comebacks that were enjoyable. I absolutely felt betrayed by “blondie”. She was so lucky I wasn’t a part of this book or I so would have slapped her! Annie’s character was too submissive for my taste, and she could have been more developed as a whole.
I was disappointed with the time lapse. There was so much in that time frame that I would have liked to know about on their journeys to their current situations, jobs, lives, etc. This would have been a perfect opportunity for character development.
This was a quick read, and it did suck me in wanting to know what will happen next. Although I was upset with Blondie’s actions, I felt it added to the story as a whole, and it was well written. 3 fangs for the original storyline and crazy banshee!
3.5 Stars First off I want to say this: I have read Sabrina Lacey books in the past and loved them. I love her work as a writer/author. I just didn't care for this book. The plot was okay. Although I struggled to finish the book. The book itself was okay. I wouldn't get excited over it. I had trouble following along I felt it was all over the place at times. Just when I would get into the story, it went on to something else. I felt there were gaps? I will still read books by Sabrina Lacey just not this series as it wasn't for me.
I always enjoy the writing style brought to these books, easy to follow and I actually catch myself laughing at certain parts. I wasn't necessarily blown away by this book, mostly because it was quite short and I need more parts before coming to a final conclusion. I am wondering if Brendan and Annie end up together or if she's totally out of the picture. Hmmm... guess I have to wait and see :)
I was sketchy at first when I saw that we were leaving the beloved Jessica, Nicole, & Amber. However, I'm so happy to be reading Annie & Brendan's story! Annie could be my best friend, and Brendan... Mmm, mmm, good! As usual, Lacey has sucked me into another humor-filled, intriguing, sexy story!
I received this AR.C. in exchange for an honest review.
I love the way this starts out, totally different then others. You feel for Annie and want to shake some sense into her and then all hell breaks lose and she starts to see the light... Until book 2!!!
I found both Annie and Brendan whiny. Brendan decides he doesn't want to series because is fiancee left him. Annie is the outsider wanting Brendan he doesn't notice. Most guys and girls are immature in college. I just found the story slow moving. I read in the Hearts Series #1-6.
It was a pretty easy read but I don't think it's extraordinary. Plus it ended on a dang cliffhanger 🤢❤️ what Corrinne did to Annie was absolutely unforgivable and gross. And you don't even meet Annie until chapter 4🙄❤️ just didn't make much sense. I'm sorry...

Although I'm not a fan of serial books, this one did catch my interest and I want to continue on with the series. Annie has had a crush on Brendan since she was a freshman. This first book covers a short period of time when Annie and Brendan both get their hearts crushed, in different ways, which causes each to take a different path than the one they've been on. It's YA angsty and kinda dirty, but it is an interesting story and ends in a cliffy.

I was provided a copy of the book by the Author for an honest review.
I just finish reading this book, and I love it, love the characters, I love the way how this story was writing, I am gone keep this short and sweet.
The story begging with Brendan his seating down with mark, at a coffee shop talking, that's when Mark tell him to move in with him, and that's when he agree, than it goes to a memory that Brendan had of the person he though he love, his ex girlfriend telling him that she was moving, and now after moving in with Mark he was ready for his first party as a single man, that night that he walk inside the party he notice Annie, and they both knew right away that they where meant to be together, but Annie still had one more year of college, but that night did not stop them for being together, was that the right time for them.
I really love and enjoy the begging of this series, and I am so ready to read the second book, Author Sabrina Lacey THANK YOU for introducing me to this awesome characters and this amazing book love it.
Throbbing Hearts (Heart Series #1)By Sabrina Lacey 3 out of 5 Stars
Brendan Clark had been with the same girl all through college. He has just had his heart broken by her and is out to make up for lost time. His friends are happy to take him out partying to meet women.
Annie has been in love with Brendan for 3 years. She is elated to hear he is finally single and hopes to make her dreams come true.
The night ends horribly with the ultimate betrayal in trust. Annie feels the need not only to escape the city to the country to put her heart back together.
I felt this story had great potential. I liked the storyline but I would have liked to know the characters better. It is the first part so that may come later.
I would recommend this to someone looking for a quick read who doesn't mind a cliffhanger.
*A complimentary copy in exchange for an honest opinion.*
Brendan is newly single, and ready to play the field. Annie has been lusting over Brendan for years. when her best friend betrays her in the worst possible way, Annie takes drastic measures.
told in the first person, present tense, in both the now and in flashbacks from both characters, this book is frustratingly SHORT!! girl lust over boy, boy sleeps with girls best friend, girl actually SPEAKS with boy, and then leaves town. end of book. no sex between the two main characters, actually, hardly any DIALOGUE between them, but sex abound for other characters.
it will be interesting to see how this pans out. off to read book two

it's rare when I give up on a book or give it much of a chance. I just really did not like this book and I honestly stopped after chapter 5 I think it was.. 1. I'm really not into the whole cougar thing. seriously grosses me out... 2. What a slot. That's obviously supposed to be a different word but auto correct sucks. The second I read the line "kissed his forehead" I stopped reading this book!! hahaha. This book wasn't for me.
Brendan's heart broken after his long term girlfriend cheats on him. He decided to change his attitude towards women.
Annie has had a crush on Brendan for years. I'm really hoping these two get their happy ever after but as this is only part one I'll have to keep reading.
a real change of pace. not what I expected but maybe what I've experienced. timing is a real factor in a great number of issues in our life and the timing of this story is pleasant.
Read this series! Sabrina Lacey never disappoints and the Hearts Series is at the top of my list. This book is full of love, humor and suspense. The series is now complete, and the ending is beautiful! Start here!
Got a little lost in the beginning with the introduction of the new characters all at once, but once the book starts, you can not put it down. It does leave as a cliffhanger and you will need to get the series.
