The Mewar Conspiracy by Rrashima Swaarup Verma masterfully weaves together the lives of three central figures: the gutsy Princess Charumati of Kishengarh, the brave Rana Raj Singh, and the merciless Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Princess Charumati’s indomitable spirit and her pivotal role in the unfolding events form the heart of the story. The central conspiracy that leads to Mewar's victory over the Mughal empire is intricately detailed and captivating. The author’s ability to portray the high stakes of the Rajput-Mughal conflict while exploring the personal struggles of her characters is commendable. With its engaging storytelling and historical accuracy, The Mewar Conspiracy is a compelling tribute to the valor of the Rajputs and the indomitable spirit of their women. Rrashima Swaarup Verma has crafted a narrative that is both educational and entertaining, making it a must-read for history enthusiasts and lovers of well-told stories alike.

An interesting “factual fiction.”
The book "The Mewar Conspiracy" by Rrashima Swaarup Verma is a "factual fiction",which can be read as an interesting fictional story or as a factual story based on historical events. It may sound confusing,if I say that the book is simultaneously disappointing but engrossing too.Well, the book revolves around three main historical characters in the Indian history i.e.,Aurungzeb, the ruthless Mughal Emperor of Shazanabad (now Delhi),Rana Rajat Singh of Mewar(The great-great grandson of Maharana pratap),Princess Charumati of Kishangarh(who was in love with Rana Rajat Singh & seeks his help by writing to him to protect her from marriage to Aurangzeb which came up unexpectedly as a consequence of an incident that happened at her palace.(Earlier Charumati, breaks and tramples a painting of Aurungzeb, expressing her hatred towards the Moghal king while purchasing paintings from an old women at her palace and unfortunately the same was passed on to Aurungzeb triggering his proposal in the form of a veiled revange seeking on the princess.)).We already know from history that Aurungzeb imprisioned and tortured his own father and killed his brother Dara, to usurp power and be the Mughal king.We also know that to remain in the power he killed ruthlessly many people who opposed him or came in his way.So when we read in the book that Aurungzeb is an expert in playing Veena, knitting caps or may even pardon an eunuch when he finds the eunuch (Eavesdropping the conversation between him & the General(Jai singh alias Mirza Raja)). reflecting the other side of his personality, which perhaps might have existed in Aurungzeb but never dominated in him as a whole as from the history that we know .So to read such traits expecting from a tyrant king like Aurangzeb partly dissappointed me.As a reader of history ,my general expectation was to read more of his deceitfulness and his tyaranical intent and expected more such information about the ruthless Aurungzeb in the book. However, it's always difficult to come out with the thought process of an individual and specially, when the person of whom we are writing lived some centuries ago.To some extent, we can comprehend this by an individuals actions of his past and in this case about Aurungzeb by the historical facts.Nevertheless the book is engrossing with the information of various given historical references, paintings, the dialect of the era in reference, the integrity and valor of the Rajput kings and also about the significance and the story and valor of Rawat Ratan Singh and Rani Sahal Kanwar, the integrity and the importance in protecting the honor of women during the period, the history and beauty of Lake Pichola and the famous three storied palace, "Jag Mandir" around the lake where the Emperor Shahjehan, sought refuge and stayed for two years, who later built the famous Taj Mahal and as said, partly inspired by the "Jag Mandir”palace, the mention of poets like Rumi and Nizami Ganjavi, the vivid pictures of the past, the nature and so more.An excellant book to read that touches your heart by the simple candid narration and the information covering the glorious past.

The Mewar Conspiracy by Rrashima Swaarup Verma is a richly imagined vignette from 17th century Indian history. Cast against the backdrop of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s overreaching imperial ambitions and even a bigger ego, it essays the indomitable resistance of Mewar. Princess Charumati's anguished cry forms the narrative's core, as she seeks Rana Raj Singh of Mewar’s help to rescue her from the costly consequences of offending the Mughal imperial. The book weaves romance, rebellion, and sacrifice into an interesting narrative that is both emotionally resonant and historically evocative. I especially liked Rrashima’s style of peppering the recount with doses of mores, nuances and historical facts that reveal the deep research in her creation. Her prose is immersive, painting palaces, battlefields, and emotional landscapes with equal finesse. The other strength is the strong female agency driving the plot, challenging the passive tropes often assigned to women in historical fiction. Other than the protagonist, the author has sketched well the characters of Nirmal, Jodhpuri begum and Aurangazeb’s daughter Zeb-un-Nissa.
I was a trifle disappointed with the sotto voce treatment of Rana Raj Sigh’s friend Rawat Ratan Singh and his wife Rani Sahal Kanwar, whose legendary sacrifice is one of the most poignant episodes in Rajput history. We dwell briefly upon their story, especially Rani Sahal’s shocking act to inspire her husband, but they deserved more. They embody the very ethos of Rajputana valor and could have added a powerful counterpoint to the central romance, perhaps at the cost of a few pages more.
One moment that strains plausibility is when Manik Lal, a dacoit, proves his allegiance to Rana Raj Singh by severing his index finger. He then accompanies Rana on horseback for the task at hand. While dramatic, the scene defies logic of a profusely bleeding man without apparently any medical aid, capable of riding and strategizing immediately after such a trauma. The presence of Rana Raj Singh in the forest near Kishengarh too remains unanswered.
The “conspiracy” in The Mewar Conspiracy isn’t a covert plot in the traditional sense—it’s more symbolic than literal. Other than Charumati secretly reaching out to the Rana without her brother’s knowledge, there’s no clandestine cabal or shadowy intrigue. Instead, the novel dramatizes open defiance and valor, making the title more metaphorical than literal. The title successfully adds dramatic weight and intrigue, which suits the novel’s tone.
The Mewar Conspiracy is a fast-paced classic story of the underdog, told with sincerity and clarity. For readers drawn to tales of honour, sacrifice, and historical romance, it is an immersive and rewarding read. With this second book in this genre, Rrashima has cemented her place firmly as a storyteller weaving history and romance in a rich tapestry. I look forward eagerly to her next.

Books can be broadly categorized into factual works, fictional tales, and those that blend both. The Mewar Conspiracy doesn’t just belong to the latter category—it stands out as one of the finest literary works I’ve encountered in that space.

Inspired by a real historical conflict between the mighty Mughal Empire and the valiant Rajput kingdom of Mewar, the story is set in motion by a single, impulsive act: the insult of Emperor Aurangzeb’s portrait—arguably the most ruthless and ambitious Mughal ruler in history—by the beautiful Princess Charumati of Kishengarh.

Meticulously researched and elegantly written, the book transports readers straight into 17th-century India. The vivid descriptions of Mughal and Rajput palaces, traditional attire, cuisine, and cultural rituals reflect the author's dedication to historical authenticity.

The portrayal of key historical figures—Rana Raj Singh, Princess Charumati, Emperor Aurangzeb, his daughter Zeb-un-Nissa, Raja Ratan Singh, Rani Sehal, and others—is both deep and compelling. The author masterfully maintains a striking balance in presenting both opposing sides, capturing the essence and spirit of their respective legacies.

For far too long, mainstream Indian English literature has overlooked the Rajput kings and warriors. Their true heroic sagas—stories of resilience against Arab invasions and unwavering defense of Bharatvarsha, even amid internal strife—have largely remained confined to regional and vernacular texts. The Mewar Conspiracy is a significant contribution that not only honors the indomitable valor of Rajput rulers but also paves the way for more such narratives to reach a wider audience.

P.S. – Although I come from a Rajput lineage, I was unaware of the powerful and inspiring legend of Hadi Rani—a story that moved me deeply, both in the book and in history.

This is a must-read for every young Indian to draw inspiration from and take pride in the rich legacy we inherit!

As someone born and raised in Rajasthan, I’ve grown up hearing countless tales of our valiant kings and warriors — stories passed down through generations, echoing with pride and sacrifice. Yet, nothing quite prepared me for the emotional impact this book had on me.

The account of Sahal Kawar left me deeply moved. I had heard of her sacrifice before, but reading her story in such vivid, heartfelt detail brought a whole new dimension to her courage. It wasn’t just informative — it was transformative. It felt like I was reading a prasasti (a royal eulogy), carefully woven with reverence, pride, and deep cultural emotion.

The book beautifully captures the essence of Mewar — from its valorous spirit to its artistic richness. The description of the Radha-Krishna painting was especially poetic, and the imagery stayed with me long after I finished reading. The narrative does more than tell a story; it makes readers feel the soul of Rajasthan — its romance, honor, and legacy.

A heartfelt tribute to Raj Singh, Sahal Kawar, and all the brave souls who gave everything to protect Charumati. This is not just historical fiction — it's a celebration of Rajasthan’s glorious past, told with sincerity, charisma, and a deep cultural touch.

This book doesn’t just educate — it inspires. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to truly feel history.

Evocative & Literary: A Tapestry of Love, Valor, and Heritage

Reading The Mewar Conspiracy felt like stepping into a living chronicle of love, valour, and heritage. What struck me most was the detailing—the author doesn’t just describe scenes; she breathes life into them. The courtyards, palaces, and battlefields are rendered with striking detail, carrying the weight of history.

This choice of diction makes the narrative compelling, drawing readers into a world where language itself becomes a cultural bridge. The mix of Urdu and Hindi words adds a lyrical cadence to the narrative. It’s the kind of writing where you pause, not because the flow falters, but because you want to savour the cadence.

At its core, the novel is about contrasts—the tenderness of love against the unyielding promise of warriors, the Rajput clan’s fierce honour alongside the grandeur of the Mughals.

The unspoken love of Princess Charumati and King Rana, and the sacrifice of Queen Sahal, leave the reader in awe of how far devotion can go—while the king’s reaction delivers true goosebumps.

This is not just a historical tale; it is a compelling journey where passion, heritage, and philosophy collide. With its evocative language, cultural layering, and the soulful touch of Rumi’s verses, it is both a literary and emotional triumph.

Raj Singh, the descendant of Maharana Pratap and Maharana Sanga, the Rajput ruler of Mewar who was still resisting the Mughal kingdom and a thorn in the eyes of Aurangzeb. Charumati , the sister of Raja Man Singh, who dared to defy Aurangzeb. Ratan Singh , a dear friend of Raj Singh, who , like his forefathers, stood by the kings of Mewar and had just gotten married to princess Sahal. Charumati seeks help of Raj Singh when Aurangzeb decides to punish her and Raj Singh rescues her under the nose of Mughal army making Aurangzeb look like a fool. The result is the invasion of Mewar by Aurangzeb's mighty army . The Mughal might against Raj and Ratan Singh who are inspired by their love. This is the inspiring story presented by Rrashima in such a way that Ane reader would add Mewar on her bucket list. The backdrop of Rajputs and their history of steadfast resistance against Mughal along with the background of Mughal history has been detailed perfectly. The Chand baori,
Chandi ka warq,Bela,Diwan-i-aam, Diwan-i-khaas, Baburnama, Khwajasaara, Talwarbazas, Bazaa-i-musaqqaaf, Constitution of the army on both sides are some examples।
A book that must be read by all Indians and be proud of warriors like Raj and Ratan Singh and the great princess Sahal.

The Mewar Conspiracy
By Rrashima Swaroop Verma

The Mewar Conspiracy is a chronicled account of 17th century melodrama that led to an unforgettable war between the Rajputs and the Mughals which changed the course of history.
The author has browsed through India’s turbulent history to bring that stunning era, those mammoth events and absorbing characters to
life again.
There used to be a strange relationship between the Rajputs and the Mughals- their warmth, respect, marriages, governance and conflicts.
An imprudent lapse by Princess Charumati ushered to an unusual proposal from Aurangzeb which led to a war between Rajputs and the Mughals. The Rajputs were aware that Mughals would definitely avenge the faux pas by the Princess.
A legacy of waring Rajputs, their traditions, celebrations, faith, pride, glory, honour, prestige, longings, yearnings, emotions, determination, courage, guilt, strategies, conflicts, sacrifices, revenge and valour were intricately interwoven in their characters by the author.
The extent of research put in by Rrashima Swaroop Verma is commendable. Gathering the
Information and validating it through multiple sources was an uphill task.
The Mewar Conspiracy is a riveting story that brings the history alive and makes it a must read.

A Review by Meenakshi M Singh
The Mewar Conspiracy by Rrashima is a breathtaking and pacy tale of love, valor, and resistance, masterfully blending history and romance. Set in 17th-century Rajasthan, it narrates the saga of Raj Singh, descendant of Maharana Pratap, and Charumati, a defiant princess. Their love defies Aurangzeb's tyranny, leading to a fierce battle between the Mughal empire and the indomitable Rajputs. Rrashima’s meticulous research vividly brings alive the customs, valor, cultural fabric of the society and sacrifices of the era, painting a technicolor portrait of bravery and honor. This book inspires pride in our heritage and deserves to be cherished multiple times.
What stands out most to me is the portrayal of strong, empowering women like Princess Charumati, Zeb, and Sahal. Charumati’s ability to make her own choices and take decisive action, rather than simply following imposed orders by Aurangzeb, is especially inspiring. I deeply admire the Rashima Swarup Verma’s depiction of women as characters with strength, wisdom, and sensitivity. This historical epic was a truly enjoyable and enriching read!

The book is truly a work of great research and effort. I'm not usually keen on reading history, but something about this book captivated me from the start. The writing style tells it all. I was so excited while picking up this book and it totally lived up to my expectations.

The Mewar Conspiracy takes us to 17th-century India. It’s the real tale of Princess Charumati, whose mistake leads to a dangerous marriage proposal from the cruel Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. She turns to Rana Raj Singh, the Rajput ruler of Mewar, who is ready to risk everything for her. This is the story of how the Rajputs defeated Aurangzeb.

What really impressed me was how the author presented historical events so skillfully. The political and military struggles never felt too confusing, and I was always connected to the characters. The tension between the Rajputs and Aurangzeb was real, and the author captured how dangerous and relentless the Mughal Emperor was. It's a must read epic love story leading to a war that was a major event in the history of India. The book is immersive, engaging, insightful and well-crafted.

"For a Rajput, yes. A Rajput will give up his life to keep a promise. Unfortunately for us, the old woman was not a Rajput."

Just read the blurb of this book before you read my review, and you'll know why I picked it up. From my school days, stories from the Mughal rule would light me up. I would be amazed by how Indians fought back relentlessly after being suppressed for years under the Mughal rulers. My blood used to boil, looking at our country's plight. This particularly revolves around Arungazeb, one of the mightiest rulers of the dynasty.

Historical fiction is the best means to learn history without being bored, like a textbook. I loved the authors storytelling style. Rrashima has done an incredible job. My favorite character in the story was Rana Raj Singh. I am really impressed by how she has implemented many twists and turns, making the read captivating. The narration is excellent, and I give it all five stars.

Rrashima Swaarup Verma’s book, ‘The Mewar Conspiracy’ brings history to life. She narrates scenes lost in the archives of time with such richness and verve that it is impossible to put the book down, and if you do have to, you find yourself thinking about the book, waiting eagerly to get back to it.

The mystique of the royal Rajputs and the Mughals is given a fresh breath of air and emotion in the author’s writing. She walks a fine line narrating non-fiction with elan, and giving readers a sneak peek into the hearts and lives of the characters. The care with which the author approaches the story speaks volumes about her commitment to the key characters and to history itself. Rrashima makes history interesting and sparks the readers imagination. I like the fact that she allows us readers to see multiple facets of the personalities she depicts. Looking forward to reading more books by the author.

Rrashima Verma’s Mewar Conspiracy is a gripping blend of history, suspense, and deeply woven human emotion. Set against the richly detailed backdrop of royal Rajasthan, the novel masterfully combines historical authenticity with the pacing of a thriller. Verma's writing is elegant yet accessible, pulling readers into a world of palace secrets, betrayals, and the fierce pride of a legacy rooted in honor.

The characters are beautifully fleshed out—strong, flawed, and incredibly human. Each twist in the narrative adds depth, and the central conspiracy keeps you guessing until the very end. Verma’s meticulous research shines through, adding layers of realism to the storytelling without ever feeling heavy-handed.

What an amazing read. There are books that thrill you while you read and then there are books that stay with you after you have put them down. The mewar conspiracy certainly is the latter.

The author has masterfully woven an amazing historical saga that pulls you in with its rich descriptions and colourful narrative. She has brought to life a forgotten story from an era that still casts a vast shadow over the present. 17th Century Rajastan comes to life, as do the conflicts with the Mughal authority, the ambitions, love, jealousy, deceit and more.

The characters are well fleshed, the descriptions vivid and the plot gripping. Apart from them, the strength of the narrative lies in its ability to brigh forth the political complexities of the time which would be appreciated by the readers and profoundly adored by the enthusiasts of historical fictions. All in all, a must read.

I am fascinated by historical tales, and 'The Mewar Conspiracy' written by Rrashima Swarup Verma is a captivating , well researched read. Based on the war between the Rajputs and the Mughals, the book focuses on the courage of Rana Raj Singh, the grandson of Maharana Pratap and the erstwhile ruler of Mewar. He loves Princess Charumati, who is faced with an unwanted marriage proposal from Emperor Aurangazeb. When she turns to Rana Raj Singh for help, he does not hesitate to take on the might of the Mughal Emperor, Aurangazeb. The turn of events, the emotions leading to the epic battle is beautifully described by the author. The characterisation is superb and the language is simple. Reading this book is like watching a movie, as though each scene has been meticulously crafted by a master movie maker. Rrashima Verma takes you on a trip to watch events that unfolded almost 400 years back, but such is the writing and the passion for research and detail that you feel it is happening right in front of your eyes. Some of the events are emotionally shocking and described with such verbal and visual ferocity that they stayed in my mind for quite a few days as if I had personally lived through them. The last few pages are just breathtaking and so well delivered that I am tempted to reveal the end but sorry, you have to experience it yourself! This is an amazing book and I am sure I will read it again very soon!

Rrashima Swaarup Verma’s The Mewar Conspiracy is a meticulously researched historical non-fiction that delves into the rich and storied legacy of the Mewar dynasty, exploring its cultural, political, and social complexities. Verma’s writing style is a standout feature, blending scholarly precision with an engaging narrative that captures the imagination. Her prose is vivid and descriptive, bringing to life the grandeur of Mewar’s palaces, the rugged beauty of its landscapes, and the intricate workings of royal politics. At the same time, her lucid language ensures that even readers unfamiliar with the region's history can easily follow and appreciate the narrative.

One of the book’s major strengths lies in its ability to present a nuanced portrayal of historical events and figures. Rrashima’s storytelling makes the historical account feel dynamic and alive as she deftly interweaves the personal and political, the grand and the intimate. Her ability to present history as a series of interconnected human stories rather than a dry recounting of events is one of the book’s greatest achievements. Overall,  the book is a masterful work that combines rigorous historical scholarship with the art of storytelling. The Mewar Conspiracy is a well-researched true historical account of a war between Emperor Aurangzeb and Rana Raj Singh of Mewar. It’s surely unputdownable. Being a history buff for me this book appears to be very unique in its content with an intelligent narrative. Rashima has shown her writing prowess yet again after the super success of ‘The Royal Scandal’. The fairy tale romance between Rana Raj Singh and Princess Charumati looks lively and vividly described. Through this book, I learned about a story that I had never heard before.

The only saving grace is that it brings a lesser-known part of our history to light. The writing and the overall structure do not do justice to the title at all. It's written like a screenplay for a Deepika-Ranveer film. "How the Rajputs defeated Aurangzeb" doesn't find a mention in the entire novel. A complete misnomer.
