Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

✅ Pace
✅ Action and fighting
✅ Secondary characters becoming more important
✅ Found family vibe
✅ More of Roland
✅ Magic and Arabian mythology
✅(🆗) Plot
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: violence, deaths, some gore, the usual with Kate...

After separating from the pack, Kate and Curran are trying to go on with their life. Working for Cutting Edge and getting a house in a cute neighbourhood was a good start, but of course, it couldn’t last. When Eduardo goes missing, and his girlfriend, George, is suspicious that her father might be involved, she asks Curran and Kate to help her find him. Curran and Kate quickly realize, though, that this is much more complicated than a missing person case, as it seems to be connected with a string of strange events happening in the city, involving ghouls and giants.

The plot of this book was not my favorite of the series. However, I loved the relationship development in this book, whether it is romantic or friendship. There is not as much focus on the romance between Kate and Curran, seeing as this is the 8th book in the series, and their couple is strong and well established by now, which is okay with me. I loved the courting and push-and-pull part of their relationship, but once a couple gets together and is in a good place, I dislike having pointless drama added to the story (like the Lorelei situation).

I love the found family vibe in this book. It was a theme in the whole series, with Kate going from being a loner to having friends in the Keep and a group she could rely on, but it felt more present in this book. With Kate and Curran being away from the Keep, some of the shifters decided to follow them and separate from the pack, and we can see how Kate and Curran are building their own little pack near their house, with the people they care about and who care more about them than the pack. It added a cute and sweet touch to this action-packed novel, and I enjoyed seeing more of George and Barabas in this book.

The folklore in this book was centered around Arabian legends and mythic creatures. I said it before, but I love how almost each book focuses on a different mythology. We had plots revolving around Celtic, Egyptian, Asian, Scandinavian mythology, and much more, and the authors continue to find ways to build plots with distinct legends or mythology aspects woven into them, without taking the focus away from the arc-plot.

We see more of Roland in this book, and I am not sure what to think of him. He is the bad guy; that has been made clear since the beginning of the series, and we can see that he hides things from Kate, because he wants her to see him in a certain light. Still, he does not seem to be outright evil so far, or to want to kill Kate. He tries to interact with her, but I know it is probably because he has some endgame. Still, I like the fact that he is more complex than I thought he would be, and that his motivations are more than him simply being evil and power hungry. I know eventually Kate will need to fight him, but until then, I am curious to see how his relationship with her will develop, and what he wants from her.

On a side note, the recaps are starting to annoy me. I lost count of how many times they explained who the people were, or how the Order worked. We know those things by now, and I didn’t mention it in my reviews of the previous books because it is a minor detail, but we’re 8 books into the series now, no need for the recaps anymore; it kills the pace of the story.

I am curious about what happened to Hugh. He was a big part of the plot in the previous books, yet he was absent from this book, and all we know is that Roland sent him away. There is more to this story, and I know there is a spinoff book about him, so I am eager to get to it and discover exactly what Roland did to Hugh, and also get to know Hugh better because I thought I knew what his intentions were at first, but I am not so sure anymore…

I love this series. Always something comes up and Kate, Curran, Julie and their friends have to save Atlanta. I'm stalling knowing there are only three graphicaudio books to go until this series finishes. I need more Ilona Andrews in my life.

I forgot how awful the scene of Kate hospitalized was.. mainly because of the condition she's in and what it might mean. I'm sure it got me when I read it but hearing it, wow. What a performance.

So much of this book deals with father dynamics and I found it so interesting to explore all the various ones on offer and how so many of them were the same but also different. I also loved how this didn't feel like the authors were doing a character study; which is how it would've been in the hands of another.

And speaking of dynamics, the shift in the Pack circumstances made for some really entertaining moments. Mostly as it related to real estate, elle oh elle.

No bonus short story in this one but the epilogue was sweet enough to not need one.

I Gotta be honest, this is probably my favorite sor far in this series, and on top of that the Graphic Audio Team a did insanely great job!! I mean this one really kept me on the edge of my seat especially with the music strategically positioned so perfectly. I honestly couldn’t get enough of this one!

Another incredible book by Ilona Andrews! Excellent storyline. I wish this the book was longer, I couldn’t get enough. The vantage point from Eduardo’s background was great….and dining at Applebee’s?! I’ll leave it at that, don’t want to leave any spoilers!

This is not my favorite Kate Daniels book as it’s a definitely set-up/filler book. But the graphic audio is as great as always. I especially love the Kate/Curran fights because the voice actors are so good. They’re truly hysterical.

I am recycling my old review of the book because I have nothing to add other than the dramatized adaptation took it to another level. That being said, these Graphic Audio books are abridged and some scenes were heavily edited. Didn't take away from the book, but it was noticeable.

Original review: Once again Ilona Andrews knocked it out of the frakkin park! Magic Shifts, Kate Daniels #8, was action-packed, intense, emotional, snarky, funny, and pretty damned sexy if I must say so myself. Hello bathtub!

I sinceriously loved everything about Magic Shifts and the direction that the Kate Daniels series is heading. Seeing Curran completely out of his element and living among humans was a lot of fun. If I had a neighbor that pissy, I wouldn't have been as diplomatic about it. I get that Kate and Curran are trying to fit in with the norms, but that woman was a racist and unbelievably petty.

Something I wasn't expecting and actually enjoyed was dinner at Applebee's, of all places. I wasn't expecting Roland to have that much interest in Kate (outside of wanting her dead), but he seemed to really want to get to know her. Granted, we know that not everything we get from him is genuine and there is that whole vision thing, but something tells me that maybe it isn't as cut-and-dried as that. The events that lead up to that vision seem to be where the rest of the series is going and I really look forward to going on that journey with Kate and Curran.

The fact that we are eight books in and Ilona Andrews is still introducing new-and-excited magical creatures and expanding the brilliant Kate Daniels world, makes this series even more enjoyable for me. Take note, other authors in the genre, this is how you do long-running urban fantasy!

Listen, there was no way I could be truly objective about this. Kate and the gang are my absolute favorite comfort series/characters. This book also has what is maybe my single favorite comedic bit in the whole series… to avoid spoilers, let me just leave you with one word: Applebees 😹

I do think the GA productions are continuing to improve. The voice actors themselves are so great, and they’ve done a great job of matching voices to characters. And the sound effects are much more complimentary and not distracting (for the most part). My issue is that there are still occasionally times where the background music seems mismatched and/or too loud and distracting. And the foley for the spicy bits - GA, why do you have to suddenly add in a million sounds and music and when otherwise there had been nothing going on?! It just seems to come out of nowhere.

All that said, I purchased the GA version in addition to the original audiobook because I just love this series that much and this is just another way to get to experience my sweet babies through audio 😅💜

Basic Plot: When a shifter friend goes missing, Kate Daniels has to find him and face a terrible new threat to Atlanta, an ifrit.

Witty banter and a good pacing, what more could I want? There were relationship shenanigans between Kate and Curran, and a wedding to look forward to. There was family drama all over the place: Curran's adopted family and Kate's biological one, plus Eduardo's family as well. The book covers a lot of ground on how parents and their children relate and communicate, and how badly it can go at times.

There are larger implications of Roland's motivations and how that situation is progressing. By the end of the book, Kate has some ideas. Really, the whole book is leading towards Kate starting to figure out the possibilities she has in stopping him for good as she realizes that fighting him one on one is not the route to take..

The series continues to be excellent, and the Graphic Audio is amazing.

I had not wanted to re-read the regular version of this story, because it wasn't one of my favorites. I would guess that one of the reasons was because it came after Magic Breaks, which was my favorite. Everything after seemed like a step down.

The graphic audio felt much better than what I thought about the regular book. I did not mind Kate, nor Curran, nor their relationship. Her self-deprecating humor was as good as always, which to me, was one of the best things about the graphic audio portrayal.

My favorite character, Robert, showed up only very briefly, but I really like Luther.

Jim, the newly minted Beast Lord, and the pack in general, were not present as much as before, as expected with Curran out of the pack. Jim started to attempt to flex his muscle in his new position. I really don't understand why they were complaining about the Pack Council going against Kate and Curran, considering most of the alphas liked either Kate, or Curran, or both.

No one writes urban fantasy like Ilona Andrews. Book 7 marked a conclusion to a major plot arc that had occupied much of the first seven books so I was interested to see how Andrews would continue in the Kate Daniels world. I just love the world and all these characters. Andrews development of the Kate Daniels just seems a step above any other urban fantasy writer.

This is my second read. I enjoyed it on graphic audio but I think I prefer reading them. I feel like they are leaving stuff out. Audio books should not leave out things (even if they are a movie for the mind).

This was a fun story. Back in Atlanta, dealing with the claiming fallout as well as the disassociation from the pack. Giants, The Guild, and dear old Dad. I felt it was very engaging, some emotional parts, and you get more character development with people like Luther and Nick.

Magic Shifts Dramatized Adaptation (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews 2025 relisten: The next to last book is out so yeah, I had to do a marathon relisten of the serie. I don't have much to add. It's all good--figuratively AND literally. 😉

Original review: The fact the Kate Daniels series is being "adapted" gives me happy feelings inside. This is a favorite series and I already owned Kindle editions, then the audio versions as I developed trouble with my eyesight. THEN the dramatized adaptations started coming out from Graphic Audio. Be stil my heart! Yes, I'm busting the book budget to add these to my personal library.

I recently saw a comment from the authors that this is Ilona's fave in the series. It's a good one with lots going on. Quick recap for those unfamiliar: Kate and Curran have left the pack, bought a house on a cul de sac (the scenes with the neighbor who fancies herself as the HOA Pres still makes me laugh). There's a new baddie in town and when Kate encounters this magic, it backfires and she strokes out. Literally. Cue the angst with Curran and Julie. *deep sigh* Curran's tender anger just gives me all the feels. And poor Julie, terrified of being orphaned again.

There is a LOT to unpack in this book--Roland, separating from the Pack, the Guild, the baddie and way more. Anyway, I highly recommend the Graphic Audio versions of this series. They stay true to the originals, the voice actors are spot on, and the sound effects just add to the experience. Hopefully, the wait for the last books in the series won't be long.

This whole series is amazing! And I am a big fan of the Graphic Audio adaptation.

Kate and Curran battle more creatures from mythology- this time from the Middle East/North Africa. The ongoing storyline continues as well- family dinner at Applebee’s 🤣
