SKIP - A Novel

Vale, a self appointed writer and newly gay teen, has come to the realization that he has a massive crush on his lifelong and openly bisexual friend, Elijah. When the pair go to the beach one weekend to celebrate the start of their senior year, they share a kiss. Irony plays a cruel joke on them when a group of homophobic peers from their school happen to be there to witness them together. A physical fight ensues and Vale hurries to protect Elijah with his own body. A powerful, thunderous clap explodes overhead and the pair vanish and reappear in Dolores Park in San Francisco. Fate saw fit to also play a joke and gave Vale the ability to teleport or as Elijah calls it, SKIP.

What do you get when you combine Heartstopper with Percy Jackson? A young adult fiction telling the story of a heartfelt, blossoming gay romance between best friends with a twist of magik (yes, with a K!) and alchemy! SKIP is beautifully written with a sense of humor and relatable characters. It gives the reader an empowering feeling of growing up with the help of friends and on their own, along the way providing belonging and closure. Corey R. Parsley does an excellent job keeping the reader engaged as the story travels literally around the world and also through the daily life of a gay teen’s senior year in highschool. There are moments of tense action and darkness, soft tenderness, and the sense of accomplishment that can only come from facing your bullies. I highly recommend SKIP for anyone looking for a little slice of love and magik!

Skip was a pretty good book. The story was interesting, the romance was cute, and the magic was pretty cool. The last few chapters also had some good action scenes. Unfortunately, I felt like some of the storylines were rushed and others were left unfinished.
