Bound by destiny and a love that conquers all, with an oath sworn in blood…
Born of a unique race called Gaias, sixteen-year-old Taryn Malone has been blessed with extraordinary abilities, including one that was believed to have been eradicated centuries ago. This gift must remain hidden, or her entire species will perceive her as a threat. Upon her move to Williams, Arizona the woods on the mountainside become a refuge, the place where she can let her power flow free.
Skin Walker, Larkin Taylor has dreamt of the same girl since his twelfth birthday. While on a run in his wolf form, he catches the scent of something overwhelmingly powerful. When Larkin comes face-to-face with his dream girl, he is astounded to find that she is real. Desperate to be close to her, he joins her as the wolf where he witnesses first-hand the true depths of her gifts. Though he should destroy her for what she is, he finds himself struggling with a fierce need to protect her and the secrets she harbors. His own secrets are threatened when his former best friend bumps into Taryn at the local café.
Keiryn Falcon is instantly smitten with the new girl in town when sparks, quite literally, fly between the two as she brushes past him. The moment she is out of sight he takes to the skies in hawk form to follow. When he spies Larkin jumping down from her bedroom window, Keiryn sees nothing but red, knowing what kind of a monster lurks within the black dog. Bearing the physical scars that Larkin inflicted on him five years ago, Keiryn pledges to keep Taryn from falling victim to the same fate.
While her heart wages a constant war between the boy that is bound to protect her and the one she shares a deep, inexplicable connection with; who will she choose, and will that choice destroy them all?
This is a fantastic book, I was invested after the first page. the story line keeps you turning the page and the characters are well thought out and relatable. Can't wait until book 2!
Let me start off by saying that I really did try to finish, but alas, my efforts were thwarted. How were they thwarted? Well.....
The amount of ridiculousness that kept occurring was, in fact, ridiculous. Add that with "too many characters syndrome" and "head hopping disease"... and well, you have a big I DON'T FREAKING CARE. No, literally; I don't care.
Do to all of these random side characters, (who's names I can't remember) thinking some stupid thing about some stupid shirt some girl wore, I have sensory overload. I do not have the capacity to care.
Oh, and did I mention the MC is a beautiful, powerful, kind, loving, forgiving, bright..... you know what, just scratch all that and just put a big, giant PERFECT over it all. How irritating.
Also equally irritating: everyone loves her. Before she officially meets them, (that would be the boys involved in the love triangle, because this book OBVIOUSLY needed one of those) they stalk her. No really, they sleep outside her window and stuff.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg my friends. But if you want to delve further, be my guest.
I took a chance on an unknown Indie author expecting to not enjoy it as I usually find them to be riddled with grammatical errors. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with this book and will absolutely be reading the others in this series. The characters were well written and easy to relate to. It had all of the fantasy elements I like in a good young adult story. Even though it is co-authored I could not tell. The author's writing style is fluid. If you are looking for a new author and series to fall in love with, I highly recommend this one!
Whoah, this series just captured my attention straight away. Being a bit reclusive on trying it out, well. After reading both book one and two, I must say, it were definitely worth every penny.
Our heroine, so sweet and innocent, are actually pretty cool. ALthough she has her moments, I must say, attitude, strength, love and well.. she is sorta badass.
Perfect blend of romance, action, suspens, mysteri, intrigue, friendship, secrets and family.
I really do recommend this book, and also, even better. Book 2 is awsome! Even better.
Nicely done! The characters were well developed and the story moved at a good pace. It kept my interest all the way through. I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out in November.
Overview: This book had me intrigued. It really did. I haven't read a YA book in a long time, so it was a breath of fresh air. The story line was really interesting, and honestly, it was the only reason why I kept with the book. I really enjoyed the plot, and the ideas behind the abilities of the characters were intriguing as it melded a lot of abilities that are seen in many different types of paranormal books (elemental, imperium, good, evil, vampiresque, well, you get the idea). This book also took me at least a week to finish(a record actually because I average reading a book within three days), and it was available with kindle unlimited, which is a big plus. The cover doesn't really fit where the book ended up, but I can kind of relate to where the flower came from.
Okay, now onto my critique portion of this review.
Topic: Character Development First impression: there was a lot. The main character was Taryn, second Larkyn, then there was Kieryn. There were many secondary characters, and there are too many to really get into. Taryn was sheltered all her life until high school, and her mother sheltered her in Kansas until the point in time where the book starts after their big move. Okay, like I said, the book took me at least a week + to finish, and this is reading for at least an hour to an embarrassing amount of time each day. After finishing the book, I honestly cannot tell you the basic facts on the main characters. I can tell you what their abilities are, I can tell you what their traits are, I can tell you what their relationship status is (kinda), and things like that. However, I CANNOT tell you simple everyday things about them that make them real characters in my mind. Throughout the 471 pages on my kindle, I cannot tell you their favorite colors, interests, favorite pastimes, and other nonsensical things that you normally pick up if there is good character development in the book. I really wanted to like the characters, but I couldn't FEEL for the characters when push came to shove. I really wanted to feel for the characters, especially after I invested so much time into the book. Sure, I learned certain things of the character, but not nearly enough. If the book did not have a great plot, I would not have read on because i did not like certain traits of the characters. For example, I understand that they are teenagers, so I know moodiness is a give, but even the adults, yes the adults, were way over-the-top emotional. I'm talking about the mother going into the garage to suddenly fall to her knees and ball her eyes out because of something that happened (either Taryn was having a good day/bad day, what have you). Regardless, it seemed too much way too much of the time. Certain scenes should be emotional, not scenes like "what do you want for breakfast", and then have a "crying because she cant decide" or what have you (totally made up scene right there) Long story short, I wanted more, I wanted to feel more, and know more, and really feel emotionally connected to the characters, and this book left me wanting. Also, on a side note, some of the character's name changed spellingwise at different parts of the book. And, everyone's name was supposed to have a "y" in it at some point, but some did not and that confused me (I don't know if that was intentional or a type-o or what have you)
Topic: Point of View Simply stated: I hated it. There was way too much going on. It is told in the POV of an omniscient narrator where they are in everyone's head and know everything about everyone and everything that is happening. Maybe it's just me, but in general, I dislike books that are told in this POV because of the fact that many authors fail to distinguish which person's head that they are in. For example, one sentence it would be in Taryn's POV but the next, or even the second half of the sentence, would be in Larkyn's. It confused me, and I had to re-read many things in the book. Also, the POV's often gave things away about a character, and then the next POV character would miraculously notice that thing about them and something would happen. This annoyed me a bit, but I worked with it and read on because I had to know where the story was going. Again, had the storyline not have been as interesting, this book would have been placed in my DNF bookshelf.
Topic: Pace Extremely slow moving. For half of the book, I felt as if I was just skimming the page to move on to see what would happen. Many scenes were left unclear, and really didn't fit in where the story was going. I feel that the book could have been cut down a lot, to make it easier to read, and so that it would seem less boring at times. I wish things happened quicker, but when the climax built up, everything from there on moved really fast and then BAM the book was over just like that.
Topic: Plot As you can tell, I enjoyed it. It kept me reading. This book has so much potential to be amazing if things were made more concise and more clear to the readers. For example, I still do not understand why there are lightning clouds and what their significance are. I won't get into it for spoilers sake, but that made me wonder. I will continue reading on to see where else this book is going, but in general, I like it, but I feel like there is too much information and description at times where it doesn't need to be. I feel like the authors gave away the shock value when things really hit the fan (i guessed what would happen within the first quarter of the book because of all of the clues that were given.) I already have an idea of what will happen next because of the last chapter in the book, and I will read on to find out if I am right (though i hope I am in for a shock).
Topic: Small Rant of Small Unimportant Things There are many things that annoyed me, like the POV, and how the book gave away details that made what happened next seem insignificant. There were no guessing factors because with anything because before everything happened, we were given information that we would not have know, and most the time it was insignificant anyway. Okay moving on, this sentence really annoyed me, and i do not know why. It is from the mom's point of view and it states "She smiled widely, never having seen Taryn wear a dress before." Mind you, Taryn is of high school aged, and was sheltered, so yeah that could be a possibility. BUT, within the first few chapters, Taryn and her mom went CLOTHES SHOPPING at a mall. Now, if the mother and daughter were extremely close, I'd assume, while during clothes shopping, the mother had the daughter try things on and looked at them to see if they fit right before handing money over to buy it. That's just what I think...but who knows. I don't know, maybe it is irrational, but htat just annoyed me. Soooo moving on, another thing that annoyed me was the fact that a lot of people started to move into the home. I didn't realize this until way later than i was supposed to, and I was confused a lot during this time. I feel that things need to be made clearer for the sanity of us all. Also, I wouldn't exactly call me a grammar natzi, but I was cringing a lot of times. A lot of times. Especially over the misspelled names. YES NAMES PEOPLE!
In Short: I enjoyed this book. It had potential, to be amazing, but after everything, I chose to give it 3 stars. Had the book been written in more distinctly clear POVS that didn't give anything away, and the book got to the point a little quicker while giving more everyday personal information, it would have been bumped to a 4, or even 5 star review. Nonetheless, I recommend this book for you to read because my pet peeves may be different from yours, and you may like the POV and feel more connected to the characters than I had felt. The storyline was truly unique, and different from anything I read in a LONG time, and I read a lot so that is really saying something.
I got this through Goodreads First Reads. And was completely glad I did. It took me awhile to get through it (due to the length), but it was completely worth it. Whispering Wind was a great read from start to finish. The beginning of the book, usually the most boring part of any book, was completely engrossing. I wanted to find out why the girl at the beginning absolutely had to leave because she revived a fish. Unfortunately, this isn't answered until later, but it was an amazing way to start the book. And for a book that isn't supposed to be a comedy, there are some funny parts, too. I loved when Taryn called Keiryn and Larkin Neanderthals when they fought in the cafeteria--it about summed up what they were being, and was absolutely hilarious. The characters are also great. Taryn does seem to be a bit perfect at times (not really her fault, it's more or less because everyone fawns over how great her ability is), but she's still a great main character. She doesn't whine, she doesn't brag, and she fights for herself on many occasions. Even with her protection group. Larkin was a bit of a stalker at first (I seriously was creeped out by him), but he did eventually grow on me somewhat. I did like Keiryn from the start, but still don't know that much really about him. The book doesn't spend that much time on his past, which was a shame. I found him to be a bit of a stalker too at first. But for some reason, he never quite creeped me out as much. I do hope he gets it eventually regarding Nalani (I think that's who it was), though. Well, if he and Taryn don't work out. There are way too many characters to mention other than the main three, but they're all great, too. There aren't any boring characters in the book. Even the bad guys were interesting, as terrible as they were. The first book left a lot of questions unanswered, such as I guess I'll just have to wait until I can get book two to find out. :).
I imagine as a 12 year old i would have loved this book or at least liked it to some exciting degree. However, no longer being 12 and therefore able to see just how idiotic, childish, and irritating the heroine and other supporting characters were as well as the plot of the book was, i have to say this book was terrible. I hated the main character from the beginning and i think that just tainted my view of the rest of the book. It's a testament to how bored i actually was that i finished this and didn't stop after the first few chapters.
It had a good premise and i feel that it could've actually been a really good book, but the main character just ruined it and the other characters were just really bad. There were way too many of them to start with and this is probably why it didn't seem like they were very developed. I feel like there's probably some general unwritten rule that when writing a book, you don't have too many main or important characters that would distract from the story and make things confusing. No joke, this book had over 15 prominent characters - primary and secondary :( - *facepalm*
And the heroine wouldn't stop describing what everyone looked like - everyone in this book was freakin beautiful by the way - astoundingly gorgeous, with either 'intense hazel eyes' or flowing golden locks or 'perfectly chiseled features' - now I'm not saying it's bad to be describing what characters look like and all, I'm just saying the frustration was strong when i had to sit there and read like 3-4 pages of just descriptions of what everyone looked like - which again ties into just how many characters there were in this book. The frustration was very strong. And there was one particular point that kept niggling at me - every time the mother called the heroine 'baby girl' or 'darling daughter' it was always capitalised like 'Baby Girl' - and i know that's just me being nitpicky but that irritated me to no end. Not to mention some of the names - there was one family where the little boy was called Ardyn, the dad was Adyn and the sister was Adalyn - confusing! -
i really really disliked this book but i realise that a lot of people on here seem to have loved it, if the ratings are anything to go by and i respect that.
Well, I think my 11-year-old self would have liked this book a lot more than my adult self did. I took issue with several things.
1. There are way, waaaaaay too many characters. You're introduced to like 20 people in the first 15% of the book. If that wasn't hard enough, it's doubly hard to remember them because...
2. Everyone's name is completely bizarre. There are no Ashleys, Joses, Marcos, or Katrinas here. Nope. We've got Ilyn, Taryn, Keiryn, and basically a whole bunch of Yns. Like, is this set 200 years in the future or something? It seems like present day, but man, these names. I mean, come ON, SOMEone has GOT to have a more common name in this town.
3. Taryn is so perfect. She's got the standard YA Super Special Snowflake Powers. She's got beautiful, honey-colored hair, and striking emerald eyes. She's kind to everyone, not afraid of a giant wolf in the woods, and so much more! She's everything you'd ever want!
4. And so is everyone else! They're all just so beautiful! In fact, when one of the characters (whose name I can't remember because of #2 above) meets the mom, Ilyn, he literally can't remember what he was going to say because her beauty wipes out everything in his brain. But that's ok because he's abnormally handsome himself!
5. Then, of course, we have the standard YA hero stalker love triangle thing going on. The two male love interests suddenly find themselves desperately in love with our perfect heroine and proceed to stalk her--including, but not limited to, sitting on her roof and watching her sleep and following her through the woods.
The storyline was intriguing and the writing was on point. The plot was a young girl not knowing the people she was from continues to keep secrets. The plot was good and the story unfolded slowly from what I wanted. The story paints and real background for Taryn and her circle off friends. It is a clean story full of young love odd misplaced destiny. I did like the story and had already kindle unlimited the second book. So glad I kindle unlimited book one. Worth reading.
First, I thought I wouldn't like it because the cover didn't make sense to me. I wished it was a different cover. Second, I was a little confused on whose telling the story but then I got used to the writing style. This was a different shape-shifter story to me. Still it was good and I can't wait to see what happens next in the second book.
Wonderful characters, dialogue that is full of humor with an authentic voices from all in this story of coming into their powers, faith, loyalty, love and friendship!
The concept and plot of this book had so much potential! If you based it solely on that, then this would have been a solid read. Sadly, I just couldn't get over the writing style.
Why only 2 stars, you ask?
- The point-of-view switches were horribly choppy. I don't mind when a book has multiple points of views, but it just didn't work for this novel. We barely got to see an event with one POV before it jumped to the next. Every time we started to learn more about a character and got to dig in deep, the POV would switch. It threw off the flow for me. (-1 star)
- There were WAY too many characters to keep track of. When each new character was introduced, they would get a mini description. You'd think this would help you remember and identify all the characters, but it actually just jumbled everyone together. One would be introduced, followed by a description, but then another would be introduced right after. There was definitely too much going on. (-1 star)
-The multiple plots. I wish that the author had just focused on one storyline. There were multiple layers in the novel that were unnecessary and distracting. This was a product of both the constant POV changes and character overload. When you shove too many concepts and ideas into a story, this is what happens. You get one big story with a bunch of distracting, underlying stories that jerk you back and forth till you don't remember what's happening to begin with. (-1 star)
If you can get over those things, or you just don't mind them, then I would definitely recommend giving this book a shot. It really had such a good concept. I just wish it would have been executed differently.
This book is amazing, I absolutely love it!!! Whispering Wind is a must read.
The story reminds me of something but it totally new and original. I can't help but love the characters and they really know how to make a bad guy. The story is so compelling, you can't help but feel the way the characters feel and hold your breath during some "Oh shit!!" moments.
The setting is in our world and also apart from our world. The Gaias are a spectacular race of people with a horrible darkness lurking underneath. This causes great problems and even greater adventures. Warning this book has an impossible love triangle. I love the 3 characters involved and I don't want to see anyone hurt and Taryn is going to have to make a impossible choice.
There are still more secrets that need to come out and now they have a dangerous new enemy to focus on.
Whispering Wind is only the tip of the ice-burg. There are 3 more books in this series. The next two are out and the 4th book should be out late 2015 or early 2016 and I can't wait. I will be getting the next 2 books in the series in my next book order.
I downloaded the free preview of this book, and before I had even finished reading, I bought the whole saga! It is very hard to explain why I loved this book without giving too much away, but I will try. This is not your typical young adult fantasy / romance, even though it has all of that, but so much more! I feel the main point of the story is how family is more than just a blood relation and how far the main character goes to protect those she loves! There are parts of the story that are predictable, but many parts where I literally gasped out loud (and had to explain to my husband & children each time that I was fine, it was just a good book!) at a shocking turn in the story. I was not disappointed, and can't wait to start book two!
This book is captivating and spellbinding, you will not want to put it down. I only did when daily life forced me to. You get so drawn into the story that you lose all track of time. It is very well written and an amazing read. I look forward to the next book in the series. Which I will start tonight. I hope this team of authors write many more books together. Well worth your time to read and share with others. My daughter will be reading it as soon as her school work load allows.
I finished the book, so there's that. I gave it three stars because it was good, but maybe I am just to old for it? Or not innocent enough? Plus, I have a hard time with the love triangles. And that only one adult in the community appears to have a job. I'm probably just jealous on that part. Overall, great storyline but supporting characters are a lacking.
Just could not get into this book. I hated the main character she was kind of an ass hole. Everyone who meets her loves her but she is a Nast brat to her mother and overall not that fabulous of a being. Got 52% of the book completed and it killed me just to get that far.
This is my third time reading this series! It is one of my all time favorites and I am sure I will read it again in the future. Taryns character is awe inspiring, and the love she has for for her family and friends makes for a brilliant story.
