All of the incredibly powerful high mages died out centuries ago. Nobody expected one to return.
I was just a simple blacksmith apprentice when a visit by the mages of Essalin confirmed what I’d long suspected—I could touch the aether. Destined to be a mage, I’m plucked from my village alongside a feisty redhead so we could journey to the fabled city of the high mages to learn how to control and wield the aether.
The road there isn’t going to be easy though. Brutal orc raiders are spreading across the continent for the first time in a hundred years, and rogue mages are stirring chaos in their wake. I find some allies along the way, including a highborn blonde with a sassy mouth, but it’s clear to me that I’ll need all the help I can get.
Especially when my coming shakes the foundations of the entire continent—all the way to the long-dormant throne of the High Mage King itself.
Hey there! I'm Shane, and I love writing fantasy. I've been reading fantasy all my life, and I've always wanted the chance to tell the stories that I wanted to share. So here I am! With my stories, you can expect a fleshed-out and detailed world full of interesting characters that you can't help but root for. Thanks for checking me out, and I hope you enjoy my work!
Good concept but lots of inconsistencies in the storyline.
The MC discovers his ability to use Aether just as Orcs attack his village. This happens just after two mages visit, testing young people for Aether affinity. Unusually, the MC and his nemesis, Ava both have this gift. This part is a cute tsundere trope. Turns out the MC is also a ladies man, whose tongue has skills, so he’s enjoyed quite a few farmers daughters but not Ava. Later they find another mage, Tess who is outspokenly sexy and both develop a carnal interest in the MC.
Sadly there are gaping holes in the world building. For example, they enter a city under siege where the inhabitants are starving, but the nobles and their guards ALL drink themselves insensate each and every night, yet the populace hasn’t risen up. Later, the three novice mages wander the forest for at least 3 days without food, shelter or more importantly water. They don’t even seek food or water, but then track three enemy high mages through this forest for over a day getting close enough to hear their nefarious plans without being discovered. They then start running and fighting Orcs before being not killed but captured. All this while there is an illusion spell affecting an entire army they had been traveling with. Simply unrealistic and unbelievable!
As I said, the storyline and characters are interesting but there are some egregious flaws. Just realized this author wrote Dungeon Hero’s, which also had horrid world building flaws. That series was also underwhelming.
Not what I wanted to read about. I wish Authors would state that their book is mostly about a young man going on about his sex life and fantasizing about threesomes and telling the reader all the nitty gritty of it. Throwing in a few scenes of actual fantasy fire mage stuff does not count.
This was an unexpectedly enjoyable and entertaining read. The start of the book got me a little emo with the brutality of the attack at the Fullworth village. Connor and Ava’s growing relationship was a sweet contrast along with Connor’s closeness to the married couple Theo and Rose as his surrogate parents. Tess joining the group was a hilarious addition to the group.

If you advertise 2 books you should have the second book ready to read . I would not have selected book one ..And give you hero the power he needs to be what the book portrays . This guy has a reputation of bedding women and supposedly knows what to do ....performing oral.sex on a woman is great but not al! Everything . The hero mage is about as sharp as a butter knife knowing nothing about women . I,all pass on boom 2 its not that good
I was into it,,,the story had my interest the characters were worth getting to know,,, until Tess shows up. I guess if false friendship ( she is absolutely not Ava's friend) inappropriate comments and behaviors and just slutty behavior is your thing get this book ! Tess made me not like the characters I had come to like. Connor became a weak minded too young young man who was led around by his privates and had no moral base to guide him. Ava went from being a firecracker to being a sad little mouse to much of a hick to see thru Tess and her fake friendship. It was a disappointment. And unnecessary because her presence does nothing to enhance or advance the storyline.
This author's various book series have been pretty middling for me so far. Dungeon heroes i got about 4 books in but then finally dropped the series, as the storytelling wasn't that great. Demonic Education i liked quite a bit more, and i've stuck with that series, but it has it's drawbacks too, not the least of which is the annoyingly obtuse MC. This series i'm ambivalent about, i like more of the characters, except Ava, i hate her guts. But some of the story events are what really turned me off, including, but not limited to, that chase through the streets following those bandits who, for some fucking reason, decided to grab Ava as a hostage and slow down their escape mega, which resulted in getting them all killed. What a stupid event. Especially that part where they throw the bag of jewels at MC's head, wtf. How about punching Ava really hard in the face and then running for your life with the loot while MC stops to see if she's ok? So dumb, it's like they all wanted to die. And that entire final act? God that was atrocious, finding the baddies just conveniently having a conversation to provide all that exposition. And that big bad guy monologue at the end, that was cringe, i had to skip some pages. And let's not forget this whole story so far is basically a poor man's Wheel of Time book one. Up to, and including the aiel and trolliks, i mean, Firelanders and orcs. Smh. Anyway, i'll probably keep with the series for the time being, cause other than a few shitty story events it was alright.
A pretty good high fantasy book for mid teens. The reading level and violence level is clearly written for mid teens, so a fast read for an adult. An 18 year old was found abandoned as a baby, his adoptive father is a blacksmith and he is becoming a great smith himself (this never comes up again). The adoptive parents die in an orc raid, but at the same time the visiting mages found out he has magic and they start a travel adventure to the magic college. There is a rival from the village who also has magic, she has been a life long rival, but maybe also wants him...
Three issues, one very serious. The rival girl had been presented as a tough and competent rival, but during the story she turns into a moron who does nothing right, to drive the story and let the hero save the day multiple times.
The hero, for no reason, knows things. All kinds of things, and he has the bestest power ever, that levels up exactly when needed. The fourth time it happens, it means there is no plot tension left.
The writing level and violence level is mid teen, but then for no reason there will be crudely written sex scenes. It is almost cringey, and feels a little creepy against the writing style of the book
I recommend this book to anybody reading the review
The author stated in the afterword that he plans for the series to be 9 or 10 books. He also mentioned to my surprise that the story was a little bit slower than what he normally writes. Overall I enjoyed the book which is why I recommended it to anybody reading this review, however it did feel to me as though it was missing a few rungs as it built towards the conclusion. In other words he might have needed to slow it down a bit more. To me it felt like there were a few jumps here and there that were jarring enough to break the immersion. Our main character is destined to be a legendary mage and this first book though shaky in places covers him and his companions finding that out while setting the scene of All the Troubles to come. There are spicy scenes and perhaps that's what the author was referring to when he stated that he was going slower. Other way I am interested in a book two which is slated for a January release. With that I will simply say Well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing the story to us, the Amazon readers.
Connor, a young man, has just discovered his hidden talent as a powerful mage. As he delves deeper into his newfound abilities, he exceeds all expectations, quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of magic. However, this newfound power brings with it a conundrum, as two intriguing girls enter his life, each vying for his attention and affection. The story is filled with thrilling action, moments of humor, captivating intrigue, and a blossoming romance that keeps the reader eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Connor's journey. Clearly, the universe has a twisted sense of humor, bestowing upon this poor soul the burden of being a magical stud - a curse he must bear with grace and a healthy dose of sarcasm.
I am giving it 5 stars, because: 1) I really like Shane's works and want to make a (very) small effort to push him and his career, 2) loved Demonic Education, so we have evidence he can deliver an good plotline along with likable characters.
This being said, the plot is not overly original (an average guy slowly develops magic powers, with the implication he will become all-powering in the future; we've seen this plot more times than I can count); so I hope I will not be disappointed by Book 2, which implies we will expect Shane to be excellent in the next one(s).
The book did feel familiar, the premise is not new, but I still enjoyed reading it. The country boy raised by adoptive parents is found to have the spark of Magic. I don’t want to create any spoilers so I won’t go any further describing similarities between this story and others. A good read, it seems I have 5 books available in the series so far I can binge on if it continues to entertain me (author said he was aiming for 10 books in this series).
Shane is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed all his other series, but this one takes the cake, I love absolutely everything about it. The story is fantastic with great pacing. The world is cool and interesting. The characters are amazing in every way. I am desperately waiting for the next book!
Conner would have liked nothing more than to follow in the footsteps of his father. Now he finds himself immersed in the world of mages. Traveling with two established mages, and a rival girl from his village, he embarks on a journey he never would have imagined.
Very good writing. Only a few minor typos...this author is careful about his craft! Living in a small town in a very rural setting makes me a sucker for this carefully crafted tale. Yes, I am anxious to read book 2!! Great job Shane, and keep up the good work!
Magic, knights , orcs and mages combined with a young hero and romance. What more can you ask for? This is a well-written story that, based on spellchecking, grammar checking and proofreading, makes for easy reading. After reading book 1, I’m looking forward to book 2.
What a brilliant start to a series! I loved how the story went and how it looks like it’s going. The spicy scenes were good and like most people I loved dirty talk during maybe even more. All the characters seem likeable too. Shame we lost what seemed to be a good character but it is what it is. Looking forward to the next one.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were incredibly interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth checking out.
I should have known by the cover. While this is a harem book its quite well done. I would have preferred more story over sex but at least the sex scenes are well written.
A wonderful mix of world building, believable interesting characters and a solid fantasy adventure!!! I for one am not shocked in the least because tis is what this author is marvelous at!!! I can't wait to see what comes next in this series!!!!
Excellent, highly imaginative, really good storyline, wonderful characters brilliant twists to entice the reader to turn over the next page. Gary Challenger from Devon UK.
Connor's relationships with fellow characters, including the fiery redhead Ava and the enigmatic Tess, add layers to the story. While some readers appreciate the romantic subplots, others feel that certain character developments, particularly Tess's introduction, detract from the main narrative .
It was good but nothing blew me away, and indeed I called the main plot points. I lost interest about halfway through but regained it when I committed. It's a lot like haremlit Last Airbender with the MC being the Avatar. I don't dislike it so I'll be continuing.
I really liked reading this. A lot of action and a great plot line. The characters are really great. It does need a lot more harem action though, speaking from a male perspective. Hey, I'm a guy, what did you expect?
DNF a few chapters in. Why would you have the male character’s narration be done by a female and then his dialogue be done by a male? Just have Jessica Threet do the MC and the other males by Blue. Whoever approved that, shame on you.
Way better than the last series I tried from this author. I managed to finish it at least, it's pretty trope heavy, so expect more erotica, less story. And there's a school and tournament arc of course...
A bit more sexual spice than is normal, enough that an otherwise great entry in the genre gets a 1 star downgrade. There can be too much of a good thing.
