Thank you for the ARC! <3 The cliffhangery feeling you left me with Camilla??! I couldn't believe my eyes when it ended. It ended with a bang and left me reeling!
This was well built, had great pacing, engaging characters, betrayal, easter eggs, various locations, and kept me in its grip! I liked Clementine even though she has her flaws! She is determined and takes no shit! I also liked William even though there were moments when I cursed him and swore I didn't like him at all. He walks a fine line between being charming and gaslighting🫵🏻 we better see some groveling man!
The betrayal part was great and my jaw was indeed on the floor at the end (even though I guessed many of the twists quite quickly!) and there were layers to the easter egging. The banter was bantering and I laughed a lot!
At first I was unsure whether this is totally my genre because I have to admit not to be the biggest fan of Indiana Jones or The Mummy even though I've seen them all (so maybe I'm a small 🪭). BUT after starting this I realised it is so much more than that! Only the last chapters were in Egypt vibes! This was multifaceted and I especially loved the dresses, accessories, shoes, and the fan!! the martial arts as well!
I'm intrigued and waiting for the next one excitedly! This built a great base and many possible ways to continue! The epilogue was a bit hurried, but after that ending, it matched my heart rate so 🫱🏼🫲🏻🗣️
EDIT: you HAVE TO read the bonus epilogue when you finish this!!! It left me gagged and even more anxious to get the next one!! Fantasy elements incoming✨🗣️
Vakuutinko jo? Tätä suosittelen suurella lämmöllä kaikille, jotka haaveilevat Muumion Brendan Frasierista, suurista seikkailuista ja maagisista aarteista.
En malta odottaa, että pääsen jatkamaan Clementinen tarinan parissa!
I requested to read and review this ARC. A huge thank you to Camilla Taipalvesi 💕
The story is set in Victorian era England. Lady Clementine’s aunt wants her to meet the suitors, but Clementine is not interested. She wants to explore the world, discover wonders like her father and marry for love.
Clementine is practicing martial arts, fighting with a battle fan and is very determined. She isn’t sure if she can trust the mysterious Mr William Hunt, who worked at the excavation site of the tombs, where her father disappeared. It was fun to read Clementine and William’s banter, I chuckled a lot while reading!
The beginning of the story was a bit slow paced and it took some time them to get to Egypt. Things got exciting at the last half of the book and the ending was very action packed. Some questions were left unanswered and we’ll just have to wait for the second book to be published!
My favorite part of the story was when Clementine and William were exploring Egypt and I wish there could have been more of that. I also expected a little more fantasy elements from the story, but overall this is well-written, intriguing and exciting story!
I recommend this adventure to all readers who enjoy historical fiction novels, slow burn romance and Indiana Jones.
*I highly recommend reading the bonus epilogue after reading the book! WHAT A PLOT TWIST!
When Lady Clementine Whitham gets the news that her father’s disappeared at an archaeological dig in Egypt she immidiately wants to go there to search for him. Of course that's not suitable for young ladies in the Victorian era and her aunt is planning to marry her off to a proper suitor. But Clementine isn't one to give up easily and she manages to get the Queen on her side. Together with her father’s assistant, the enigmatic Mr William Hunt, she's soon off on a grand adventure.
I love tough female protagonists and Clementine is certainly one! She doesn't always behave appropriate for the time she's living in and I think it's rather cool that she's training martial art. I got to learn something new as well: tessenjutsu - to fight with a (war) fan. I love to watch documentaries about ancient Egypt and archaeology, and with the author's excellent descriptions I felt like I was on site with the characters.
Taipalvesi has been inspired by The Mummy and Indiana Jones (favorites here too!) and it shows, but I also get some Agatha Christie and Mission Impossible (the old series, not the movies with Tom Cruise) vibes. This book contains a lot of things I like, so maybe it's not a surprise that I enjoyed it. But even if the ingredients are "right" it's essential that the execution is good as well. Since I read a lot of indie authors I know this can sometimes be lacking, but that's not a problem here.
If I have to complain about something it's that Clementine blushes a lot. I understand that it's to show her inexperience with men and romance, but it still gets a bit tiresome. A few times I also felt written "on the nose", but these are both minor issues.
There's a lot more I could write about this book, but it would be revealing too much. If you like historical fantasy (not so much fantasy elements yet, but there will be), a kick-ass female character, some plot twists, and a slow burn romance with fun banter you should try this!
* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *
(I received an arc of this novel in exhange for an honest review.)
When Lady Clementine finds out that her father, a treasure hunter for the Crown, went missing in Egypt and is presumed dead and that her strict aunt is making arrangements for her to be married as soon as a suitable suitor is found, she takes matters into her own hands. She convinces Queen Victoria to let her travel to Egypt to look for her father. (The Queen has only one major condition, and that condition is very delicious for us readers!)
Clementine travels together with the insufferable, much too handsome Mr William Hunt who assisted her father in his quest. Mr Hunt isn’t at all happy about this turn of events, because "babysitting" an inexperienced traveller wasn’t what he had in mind. But even he has to admit that his new acquiantance is surprisingly bold, resourceful and determined (and annoyingly attractive and clever, too).
Lady Clementine and the Tears of Hathor started a bit slowly but luckily there were enough twists to keep me entertained. It was also fun to speculate whether certain hints were actual clues or just red herrings. But most importantly, the chemistry between Clementine and William worked perfectly. I will gladly return to this series as soon as the next book gets published just to see how their romance deepens. (Btw, after reading the bonus scene from William's perspective I'm even more invested in these two!)
The story takes place in the Victorian era, which makes Clementine's skills and ambitions seem just as extraordinary as the treasures she seeks. One of my first notes says "Lara Croft, Bridgerton edition" and I think that sums up this adventure rather nicely! So if you like either, this book is for you.
I’ll begin this review by saying, that this book was such a different kind of book from what I usually read. The story surprised me so many times, and I really loved it right from the beginning! Who wouldn’t love a greatly written FMC! 🧡
I hit a bad reading slump right about when I started reading this and it lasted almost two months. So it’s safe to say that it took me a longer time to finish this. But I think that just made me pay more attention to the story and its beautiful details!
I L O V E D the action packed scenes so much, it was so much fun to read them! Also the banter between Lady Clementine and Mr. William Hunt was just 🤌🏼✨
The beginning of the book was slower paced and the end was filled with many scenes full of action and emotion. All of this combined made this reading experience so great! 🧡
I can’t wait to read more about this story! I originally rated this book with 4⭐️, but after reading the 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞, I gave this book
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️✨ (4.5)
I highly recommend this book to everyone and you should absolutely read the bonus epilogue as well!
Thank you Camilla for writing this awesome and beautiful book! 🥹🧡
This historical fantasy debut novel follows young and feisty Lady Clementine as she embarks on a dangerous quest to Egypt to find her missing father and on the request of Queen Victoria herself, the magical Tears of Hathor. She is accompanied on her mission by the charming Mr. William Hunt who is keeping a few secrets of his own. On their travels they must learn to trust each other in order to get through the hassles of the mission and to their common goals.
I loved how the plot was pictured in many different settings and steps, which felt a bit like watching an adventure movie or a theater play. We were on a train, on a boat, Victorian England, Egyptian tombs and the writing of all these places was wonderfully vivid. The puzzles in the tomb were definitely my favourite part! The pacing of the story was a bit slow in the beginning and felt a bit rushed in the end but nonetheless the overall experience was very entertaining.
I found the banter between Clementine and William to be funny and charismatic which kept me rooting for the slow burn to spark already! Loved their chemistry ! There were a few reactions (or the lack of) by the characters to certain events that were a tad bit odd to me or they felt unnatural. I also found myself thinking that the writing of Lord Thompkins's character was done entirely through his speech where it would have felt of higher quality done with descriptions. I am definitely looking forward to seeing how all these characters evolve as the rest of the series comes out.
I would recommend this to the fans of old adventure movies or games but also to people who like historical romance!
I was lucky to receive this book as an ARC (advance readers copy) by the lovely author.
Set in Victorian era England (and a bit of Egypt) this story is atmospheric depiction of a young woman taking control of her own life, against the expectations and customs of the time. And of course the best way to do so is through adventure with a dash of romance. So what’s not to like!
Lady Clementine sets to find her father with the help of his assistant while they also try to locate ancient treasures her father was after. Things don’t go as straightforward as Clementine thought in the beginning and she and her companion Mr. Hunt are stuck together traveling through Europe to Egypt.
In this treasure hunt you will find forced proximity, slow burn romance, deadly traps and magical items and a compelling storyline setting a new heroine on her way to greatness.
I personally liked the travelling scenes best because they just really set the mood and atmosphere for everything. The Victorian era is one of my favourites. And I liked Lady Clementine, because she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. Even if it means to sneak in to have an audience with the Queen herself!
Adventurous historical romance with very subtle hints to fantasy
I picked up this book in the hopes that is would combine my two favorite genres: fantasy and historical romance. It did disappoint a little in the fantasy part, no magic, supernatural creatures etc. but there are some slight hints present that the next book of the series might develop more in that direction. As for the historical romance part, I loved it!
A feisty heroine who can take care of herself, intrigue, mystery and a treasure and a person to be found. The story has an original take on the subject of treasure hunting, although for experienced readers at one point it was predictable. The main and secondary characters are diverse and relatable, and although the adventure is quite intense, the pace was set so you could easily keep up.
I am looking forward to reading the next part of this series to see how this develops.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really, really wanted to love this book but it just didn’t click all the way for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good book that you definitely should pick up if you like Victorian era, Egyptian mythology intertwined with fantasy and a budding romance. The problem I hade while reading it though is that sometimes it felt as the author was trying too hard in wanting the readers to know that Clementine was all that a strong female character should be. The bonus epilogue chapter was also something that decided my rating because it was honestly too much too soon. Too many plots going forward which sometimes can result in a “messy” book. That being said I still for the most part really enjoyed reading this book and will probably read the next one. You did good Camilla and Bookstagram is proud of you! <3
I loved the FMC right away and am so happy this is a series because I want to spend more time exploring the world by her side. If you want a romance with a POC in a period piece with a bit of mystery too, you've found the right book.
Pre-ordered as soon as I discovered this book. It's outside of the genres that I tend to read, so it maybe had a tougher audience with me, but I genuinely loved every moment. There's a romance, a mystery, a little horror, and a lot of adventure. Reading it, there's vibes of Bridgerton and Tomb Raider with an enemy to lovers theme, set against a regency backdrop. The lead is fun and fierce who is easy to cheer for.
Eagerly awaiting what's next for Lady Clementine.

An exhilarating , fast paced story with elements of Indiana Jones combined with romance, Lady Clementine had me intrigued from start to finish.
The characters were all unique and well fleshed out, the plot was well executed and the setting was atmospheric adding immersive Egyptian elements to the story as a whole.
If you are a fan of exploring , adventurers and adventures with s splash of romance then get this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Is the world ready for the mayhem of Lady Clementine Whitham?
William Hunt, her father’s assistant, tried desperately to find a way to leave her behind when he went in search of her missing father, the Earl Jonthan Whitham, an explorer. However, he didn’t know Clementine at that point. Of mixed descent, her father a British gentleman, her mother whose Indonesian Chinese heritage, outspoken attitude and unique perspective on raising a child caused such a stir, that she divorced her husband. Leaving her daughter behind more than ten years ago. Clementine was given the freedom to voice her opinions at a young age. She speaks several languages, was taught the art of tessenjutsu, the art of fighting with an specially enhanced fan, trained in jiu-jitsu and the promise of future trips with her father, and the freedom to choose her own husband. There was no way would she be left behind to the good graces of her aunt, the Duchess of Clearwater, who believed Clementine should be wed as soon as possible and therefore controlled by her husband.
Taking her future in her own hands she appeals to the Queen offering all her best reasons to be allowed to accompany William Hunt in his search for her father. She learns a great deal from the Queen about the services her father performed for the Queen. After due consideration, she would be allowed to continue his work but there were conditions. One was that she and William Hunt travel as an engaged couple, in love, and no one was to know it wasn’t real.
“Infuriating man, Clementine thought…” William Hunt: “Everything matters, my dear, now that we are to be married. I want to know everything there is to know about, so that I may love you all of you.”
After getting permission to marry Clementine from her uncle, the Duke of Clearwater. The last words her uncle left her with were a warning of the dangers they were to face thieves, diseases, violence, traps, treasure hunters and more. On the first leg of their trip to Egypt they would travel by train. What she hadn’t expected was trouble to come so quickly. Being attacked on the train by thugs demanding her father’s papers and the location of the tomb of Hathor. She had to defend herself, with a slight bit of help from William. After that encounter it was one danger after another, thieves, traps, puzzling riddles, while Will had been right, trust no one completely. Will they reach the tomb of Hathor? Do they find the Tears of Hathor? Are they just legend or do they truly hold magical powers? While Clementine is beginning to see Will as someone she just might care for. Their journey is packed with adventure, danger, abounds with secrets, a hit of magic, snarky dialogue, bits of humor and betrayal, including by some she cared for.
I was given a copy for my opinion.
The story is very well written. However, I did have a couple of concerns that made me give this a four star instead of five. At the end, there is a man, met before, but unknown until the very last few pages. However, as I read it this person is an adult but if they are who they say they are, the age is way off. Secondly, there is a cliffhanger in both the book and the extended epilogue. This has a serious cliffhanger not only in the original book but there is a very welcome extended epilogue that brings up even more questions.
“Lady Clementine and the tears of Hathor” (The Extraordinary Treasure Hunters Book 1) was released November 29, 2024, however there is no mention of when the second book will be released, on the horizon. I have searched and even applied to the author to see if there might be an estimated date. While I don’t mind cliffhangers, it is sometimes difficult to have to way for extended periods of time for the next book to come out, so even a hint of when I might be available would be nice. Especially, since it’s my opinion that this would attract some older teens as well.
As a kid I wanted to be an archologist. When I first saw the Indiana Jones film, I thought this is what I wanted. However, in truth I would much rather be following Hunt and Clementine on their travels. So, I hope Camilla Taipalvesi will soon post a date for her next book.
I got a wonderful chance to read an arc of this novel for a honest review. Thank you so much Camilla!
Seeing the first hints of this story raised my interest immediately - I love adventure stories! And this book has everything; travelling in Victorian era, young noble lady seeking the destiny of her lost father, mysteries of ancient Egypt, oriental martial arts, hidden secrets - and a handsome stranger which makes lady´s heart to flutter.
I have always loved this theme and by the vivid storytelling I almost saw the story as a movie in my head. Like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft, was Clementine ready to take an active role what ever comes in front of her. I really liked her character, and was eager to know how she was getting on her quest finding her papa as well as the lost temple of ancient priestess.
Most of all I´m a character-based reader. I really loved Clementine and William and truly enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters. Their mutual wording was deliciously witty and still they thought quite fondly about each others. It is rare to find a book I´d be so thrilled about as I was of this one.
Only thing preventing me reading it all at once was the digital form. I tend to be slower when reading from the screen, as I take pauses. But it didn´t lowen my interest. Building of the story started slowly, and still I enjoyed the life at mansion and court, the action made me hold my breath when they actually got on their way to Egypt.
The book will be released in 29th November 2024 as e-book and printed book. I already made an order for a physical copy of the book and looking forward to re-read it! And I really hope there will be second book very soon, as the twist in the end left me craving for more.
🪭From the very first chapter, I was hooked on this book. The story is a thrilling blend of historical fantasy and adventure, following Lady Clementine Whitham as she defies societal norms and embarks on a perilous quest to find her missing father and a legendary relic.🪭
🪭The writing style is excellent, immersive, vivid, and perfectly paced. One of my favorite aspects was the playful quarrels between Clementine and the dashing Mr. William Hunt. Their chemistry added charm and humor to the story, making their partnership just as compelling as the treasure hunt itself.🪭
🪭Clementine is a standout heroine, balancing strength and vulnerability as she navigates both external dangers and her own identity. The Egyptian setting and the mix of mystery, danger, and romance reminded me of “The Mummy” and “Indiana Jones”. It’s an exhilarating ride from start to finish! I’ve been looking for a book with this vibe for a long time. 🪭
🪭I’m incredibly grateful to Camilla for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC. If you’re a fan of fast-paced adventures, strong heroines, and a touch of romance, this is a must-read. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series!🪭
This has the making of a remarkable story. I loved the foundation. I would guess this is not a seasoned writer and the depth of her chararcters and the storyline needs to be more refined and stronger. Lady Clementine has an unusual education, and her back story is interesting. It was well-written and edited. It just needs a bit more depth. Clemmie can hold her own in a fight, but she seems so young when managing her emotions. Being selected for a ‘mission,’ and cautioned on sharing details with strangers, she seemed a bit loose lipped. I was surprised that William was younger than he seemed to be portrayed. Really liked the Egypt connection, all the action, again it just needed a bit more robust. I am hoping to see growth in both her and William in the next chapter of their adventures. She just seemed so young, and she made me exasperated when she acted without real thought to her surroundings and the ‘mission’ she agreed to. I did love the surprise appearance of a relative at the end, which could evolve into more adventures and surprises as she comes to terms with her family story. I started this book yesterday and wanted to let you know my feelings about it. I think the plot was entertaining. It starts off with young unmarried Lady Clementine and we find out about her family and her extended family. In the course of looking for her father - we get to go to Buckingham Palace and see Queen Victoria then France, and Egypt. Clearly there was a bad guy, I mean if I had been there I would have been going "girl just keep your cards to yourself" - so that part wasn't unsurprising - but the double "spying" and twists and turns were - this is the first in a series.
This book touches on interracial children, and the racism they encountered in "Proper British aristocracy" and it also touches, on should countries be allowed to "culturally appropriate other countries heritages" - all coming from Lady Clementine. Defintely twists and turns to this book - and I have to say that I really enjoyed it!
I have to start by complimenting the author's writing style. It flows quite nicely and is easy to read which makes this book a perfect fun read without overly complicated language.
I also quite enjoyed the straightforward commentary on racial issues and the effects of it and how Clementine navigates those situations. I found it refreshing.
Clementine as a character is also quite interesting and dynamic. On one hand privileged, naïve and inexperienced but also quick-witted, courageous and strong-willed and watching her grow as a character was very delightful.
The only thing that I had an issue with was the pacing of the story and the character banter (although understandable) but it nevertheless at times felt a bit contradicting.
I recommend this books and look forward to the next book in the series!
Thank you Camilla Taipalvesi for sending me the eARC in exchange for an honest review! Lady Clementine and the Tears of Hathor is a YA historical fiction with a hint of fantasy in it. I really enjoyed getting to know Lady Clementine, a strong female lead - I loved the approach to her mixed heritage, especially with a book set in Victorian times. It was great to see her go on a Mummyesqe adventure and hold her own in a fight! I also really enjoyed the start of the romance between Clementine and William - I'm excited to see where that goes in the next book. I found the ending to be really gripping, full of twists I wasn't expecting and leaving me wanting the next book now! A great debut, perfect for fans of What The River Knows and The Mummy franchise!
This is a fun Victorian-era adventure with interesting themes explored throughout. The pacing is good and my interest was held by the high stakes the entire book. The writing style wasn't always for me; I found the FMC was almost stereotypical in how "un-stereotypical" she was and the dialogue between characters felt unnatural in places.
Regardless, I have no doubt this book will find it's audience and I would be interested in reading more from this author as their skill compounds over time.
**Thank you to the author and BookSirens for my advance reader copy of this book. As always, my thoughts and opinions are my own.**
This was a fun read! It was the first book by the author that I read, and I enjoyed it mostly.
The story sets off in the UK, where our heroine Clementine finds out her father, and explorer and seeker of ancient artifacts, has disappeared. Clementine loved her father dearly, and thus sets out to do one thing: find out where her father is, and if he is still alive.
The story then follows Clementine and her friends through a series of events that reminded me a lot of Indiana Jones movies. Once the story takes off, there is barely a dull moment as something always seems to be happening, and Clemmie is always "going through it" with a positive attitude (for the most part!).
It was also interesting to see a character interact with the rest of the world, fighting to prove herself worthy of respect and care (where that should just automatically be a given, but we all know how it was back then) as she is of mixed heritage. I also thought it was nice to give the character a chance to voice her opinions on that society, especially once the circumstances bring in racial and xenophobic stereotypes that that society might have had against people such as Clementine, but at times it felt a bit on the nose.
The only criticisms that I have with this book, was that the pacing felt a little off, and also that a certain situation did not really feel realistic (as far as realism goes, of course, in a historical fantasy setting) and thus was a distraction from the story for me.
I feel like the story really took some time to be set up, the first half of the book really taking its time. There were certain bits of information that were told to the reader, not showed, and I feel like that is one of the reasons that the first half of the book dragged on a bit. Not all the information we got was really useful to the story, as it did not really drive it forward, and the part I was personally most interested in being quite short and feeling perhaps a little rushed (without any spoilers, this was mostly towards the end). The part where the story really takes off happens later in the book, and I kept asking myself "how is the author going to round up this story in such a short amount of time/pages?" as I neared the end of the book, as it felt that it was progressing a bit slower than I expected. But then, the author managed to finish the story off in a way that I found myself intrigued about the second book!
Regarding the realism matter, there are a few moments where the language used and the attitude of the characters feels a bit too modern in a way that does not seem to fit the era. Which is not necessarily an issue if the goal is to have a whimsical historical fantasy (à la Bridgerton), but it felt a little unrealistic and sort of distracted me from the story. This happened a few times in the first half of the book, but gets better towards the end of it. It is by no means a big deal, but it just took me out of the story. But that might just be a taste issue!
Overall, for a debut, this was a fun read, and I will pick up the second book when it comes out!
Final verdict at the moment: 4/5 ⭐️
Thank you to the author for granting me an advance review copy for free in exchange for my honest opinion!
I can't believe it's launch day, but here we are: my debut novel is out and widely available as an ebook and a paperback! Thank you to all who have supported me during the whole process; your enthusiasm and kind words have been the fuel that helped me keep going towards my dream of becoming a fantasy author!
This book is for you if you love historical fantasy, slow-burn romance, treasure hunting, and female main characters who can save themselves! Enjoy Clementine's first adventure ❤️
OH this was right up my alley!! I love mummy and Indiana jones type of books. These stories are so enriching and full of warmth that I can't help but be drawn to the plot. I loved the characters and the banter between the leads. It was so delicious! I need the next book immediately.
