Rainey Bell #4

Colde & Rainey

Rate this book
When an old friend of Billy Bell’s is killed in a hunting accident, Rainey feels obligated to attend the memorial service.

The forecasted blizzard cannot deter her from fulfilling what she believes would be her father’s wishes. What begins as a trip to pay her respects deteriorates with the weather. As the snow begins to fall and temperatures plummet, Rainey finds herself once again in the crosshairs of a stone-cold killer.

Colde & Rainey is the fourth book in the Rainey Bell thriller series. Books two and three, Rainey Nights and The Rainey Season were both Lambda Literary Award Finalist in Mystery.

Once again an excellent thriller. This psycho might be my favourite so far. That being said I was genuinely scared when the psycho side came out to play. Well done

Rainey, Katie, the children and their family and friends is a rollercoaster of a ride. Filled with dangerous predators, humor, and above all love and family. I really like the supporting cast. I have not been disappointed. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A twisted Rainey edition

This fourth book was so great! It has such a soft beginning that you could almost believe that Rainey wasn't going out to find trouble. Which is true, cause it found her. A story of what first started out as respect for a family friend, leads to uphold the memory of her father to help this family. Where one question is answered a dozen more are right behind it with no clue if Rainey is even in the right path to find the culprit or culprits. Once again it seems she's sounded by shadows. And all Rainey wants to do is get home to her wife in time for their Valentine's retreat. An amazing conclusion you do not want to miss!

Retired FBI agent Rainey Bell is back with some of my favorite characters. Starts off by Rainey attending the funeral of one of her father's best friends, Captain Wellman Wise, who has been killed in a `hunting accident'. Rainey knew Captain Wise and his family through her father, Billy, and knew he was investigating a series of suspicious deaths in his small town. A blizzard strands Rainey after the funeral and she is asked by the family to take a look at Captain Wise's notes regarding his investigation. Her curiosity gets peaked, and the trouble begins as she finds herself a target once again.

This is a more chilled out Rainey than in the (3) previous books. She's more settled, happily married, a parent of triplets. Hard to believe she's challenged and content without the adrenalin rush, but that's her frame of mind at the start. Even when things start going off track, her edge is not as sharp, but still she's got that special something. The plot kept me engaged (finished in a day). I've read all of these books and Rainey has changed over time. Positive direction, I guess, but once the angst gets toned down and happiness creeps in, she becomes less interesting and complex. A reader would have to read the previous books to have context on Rainey. The ancillary characters, lawyer Molly and her partner Leslie were a great addition. Plus Danny McNally, Rainey's ex-FBI partner, is tried and true as ever.

Overall, I really enjoyed this for what it was...as far as where it ranks compared to previous? I'll leave that to others.

I was a bit conflicted about the 4th installment of Rainey Bell. It's a good book, no doubt about it, but as the author expalains in the beginning, it is not the ride the previous books were.

It makes sense tho, because after the Rainey Season, I had my doubts on how the author could possibly top the first 3 books. In retrospect, it makes sense to take a step down, and I think it was a good choice by the author just doing that.

That doesn't mean all the ingredients from the first three books weren't there. They were, but the sense of danger wasn't really there, until near the end.

I was dissapointed a bit, that the reveletion at the end of the Rainey Season wasn't followed up. I mean, where was Wendy? , but personally, I was dying to find out how that would be played out, but there was none of it.

I try to think of this one as an interlude, and I really, really hope this story is placed before Rainey and Wendy come to term with that one. (Well, it was clear for everyone, including Rainey, but still, I think that would have been an awesome storyline when Wendy figures it out).

Anyways, don't let the 4 star fool you, it is a very good book. For me, the Rainey Bell books are modern day classics.

Excellent

I truly enjoy this series and was happy to have come across this installment. The life of Rainey Bell, Katie and their friends is fascinating, fun, dangerous and intriguing. This story contained all this and more. I hope to read more about these ladies as well as Rainey's friends Mack, Junior and Ernie.

I love Rainey and her family. After I had read the first book, I downloaded the other three right away because I was addicted to the series. In spring 2015 should be a new Rainey Bell book and I can't wait to read this one as well!
