Matthew Holt uses his anger on the ice, gaining him the title of enforcer for L.A. Quakes and high minutes in the sin bin. But hooking up with a teammate’s little sister may earn him the highest penalty of all.
Ever since pee wee hockey, I’ve only known one way to play the sport I love – one hundred percent all in. My focus has always been protecting my teammates, so when the only team I’ve ever played for betrays me, trading me to a team thousands of miles from the family that needs me, who can blame me for taking angry and bitter to a whole new level.
Then Phoebe Anderson, the younger sister of my new teammate, literally falls into my arms and suddenly my life takes another, weird turn. Because believe it or not, my late sister voices her approval of the adorable klutz and refuses to be denied. Or am I going nuts? Either way, will our siblings prove to be too big of an obstacle to overcome? Or am I ready to let go of my anger and do whatever it takes to earn Phoebe’s love?

What a beautiful story about a brothers love and devotion and grief. Processing and understanding- overcoming, adjusting and finding love when and where he least expected and in such a funny and beautiful way as well.
Matt is such an incredible guy dealing and lost in so much grief. Phoebe is just a woman trying to regain control of her life and find her own way, after leaving a crappy relationship and readjusting on the other side of the US, having a close and tight relationship with her incredible and overprotective brother who happens to be Matt’s teammate.
Together they find strength in each other and blossoms into something so. Incredible . Loved this book great read.
Jean’s third entry in her Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series is a bruising, heartfelt romance that finds surprising tenderness beneath the grit of professional hockey. Matthew Holt, the Quakes’ notorious enforcer, has built his career on aggression, collecting penalty minutes as readily as bruises. Beneath the bruiser’s facade is a man trying to cope with loss. Haunted by his sister’s death, Matthew channels his guilt into punishing hits on the ice and simmering bitterness off it, certain redemption is out of reach. Then comes Phoebe Anderson, the younger sister of one of Matthew’s teammates. Recently humiliated by a cheating ex-fiancé, Phoebe is ready to start over. Will Matthew risk it all for a love that just might save him?
Phoebe's energy is almost the antithesis of Matthew’s. She is clumsy, wide-eyed, earnest, and ready to start over after a humiliating betrayal. Jean frames her klutziness as part of her charm, a physical expression of her vulnerability and openness. Their very first meeting sets the tone for a relationship built on contrast: her warmth against his hardness, her stumbling vulnerability against his controlled rage. The forbidden nature of the pair's attraction gives the romance its tension. As the sister of a teammate, Phoebe represents a violation of hockey’s unwritten “bro code,” and Jean uses that setup to probe questions of loyalty, family, and the cost of personal happiness. The conflict that arises doesn't feel manufactured. Rather, it grounds the story in the messy realities of adult choices.
Matthew is no easy hero. His emotional and physical volatility makes him a constant risk, but Jean avoids the trap of quick redemption. His anger is not hand-waved away but shown as an ongoing struggle. What makes him compelling is his awareness that he is spiraling and his uncertainty about whether he can stop. Phoebe, most essentially, is not cast as his savior. She is navigating her own journey of healing, rebuilding her confidence and independence after betrayal. Together, their arcs parallel one another, two wounded people learning to stitch themselves back together without losing what makes them strong.
Jean writes with precision. She draws a fine balance between adrenaline-fueled on-ice action and quieter, melancholy off-ice moments. Matthew’s conversations with his father and quiet graveside confessions to his late sister are among the novel’s most affecting passages. The romance itself is unapologetically physical, but its real heat lies in the emotional risks both characters take. In the end, the novel offers no easy victories, only the hard-won possibility of second chances. Raw, tender, and undeniably hot.
OMG!! Here comes the waterworks!! Matthew and Phoebe’s story is a teammate’s sister romance that is so heartbreaking and romantic at the same time. Matt has been through so much which explains his hard exterior in and out of the games. I love how Phoebe came into his life and made things better and brought out a different side to Matt. Their story has a few ups and downs when complications enter their life, but they slowly get through it and with the help of the teammates they came out stronger and more in love. I really enjoyed their story and love the relationships and friendships that these Hockey players find. I can’t wait to read the next one.
I voluntarily leave an honest review of this gifted advance readers copy.
Book Review: Matthew (A Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series, #3) by Alisa Jean
Rating: 4.2/5
Alisa Jean’s Matthew delivers a poignant exploration of redemption and emotional vulnerability wrapped in the high-stakes world of professional hockey. As the third installment in the Los Angeles Quakes Hockey series, this standalone romance follows Matthew Holt, a brooding enforcer grappling with betrayal, grief, and an unexpected connection with Phoebe Anderson—his teammate’s sister. Jean deftly balances the grit of sports drama with the tenderness of a sunshine-grumpy dynamic, creating a narrative that feels both visceral and heartwarming.
Emotional Resonance & Thematic Depth Matthew’s journey from anger to healing is the novel’s backbone. His internal struggle—torn between his role as a sin bin leader on the ice and his latent desire for emotional connection—resonates deeply. The haunting presence of his late sister (a clever narrative device) adds layers of grief and guilt, elevating the story beyond typical sports romance tropes. Phoebe’s sunshine personality provides a compelling counterpoint, though her characterization occasionally leans into clichés (e.g., the adorable klutz trope). Their chemistry, however, is undeniable, particularly in scenes where Matthew’s protective instincts clash with his fear of vulnerability.
The novel’s exploration of found family and sibling dynamics (both biological and team-based) is its strongest suit. Jean’s portrayal of hockey culture—especially the tension between loyalty to teammates and personal desires—rings authentic, likely drawing from her research or lived experience.
Constructive Criticism
Strengths: -Character Complexity: Matthew’s arc is richly textured, with his anger masking profound grief. The ghostly interactions with his sister are hauntingly tender. -Pacing: The balance between hockey action and romance is well-managed, with neither overshadowing the other.
Weaknesses: -Predictability: Some plot beats (e.g., the sneaking around conflict) follow genre conventions without subversion. -Secondary Characters: Phoebe’s brother/teammate feels underexplored, missing opportunities for deeper conflict.
How I would describe this book: -A penalty box heart meets a sunshine soul—Jean’s Matthew is a hat trick of heat, heart, and healing. -For fans of The Deal and Beartown, this hockey romance scores big on emotional depth. -Proof that the hardest hits aren’t always on the ice—5++ stars!
Personal Remarks & Gratitude I was struck by Jean’s ability to make Matthew’s anger feel raw yet redeemable. The scene where he confides in Phoebe about his sister left me teary-eyed—a testament to the book’s emotional pull. Thank you to the publisher for the review copy via Goodreads Giveaways; the sleek cover perfectly mirrors the story’s blend of toughness and tenderness.
Final Thoughts Matthew excels as a character-driven romance with a sports backdrop, though it occasionally plays it safe with genre conventions. Ideal for readers craving emotional depth alongside steamy chemistry, it solidifies Jean’s place in the hockey romance arena.
Rating: 4.2/5 (Docked for minor tropiness but elevated by its heartfelt core.)
Matthew is book 3 in the Los Angeles Quakes Hockey series and is a standalone in the series. Matthew is a story that can make you feel every emotion within just one page. This story shows how love from the people around you can help with grief and learning to heal. The authors did an amazing job of showing the process of how challenging it can be to overcome trauma and the anger that comes with it.
Matt is a guy who is dealing with the loss of his sister and the betrayal of his past team. He finds himself filled with anger at everyone around him, including himself, but the one person he can't see to be grumpy with is Phoebe. Matthew hears his sister's voice in his head all the time, and I think the authors did a beautiful job at showing the way someone can handle grief. My favorite moments of the story were between Matt and his sister. They were so pure, and yet broke my heart at the same time because that was the only way he could be with her. Phoebe brought Matt out of his shell and showed him that he can be happy without forgetting about his sister. She never once judged him and was there for him when he was learning how to be vulnerable. She was his safe place, and he needed someone like Phoebe to begin his healing.
Phoebe was a strong, independent character, and I love seeing FMCs like that. She is the younger sister of one of Matt's teammates, who is overly protective of her. Phoebe moved to LA to start over after leaving her cheating ex-fiancé. I loved seeing Phoebe finding herself again, especially with her new job. She was at first looking for a casual hook-up, but soon realized Matt was more important than just a one-night stand. She was the person Matt needed, but she also found that someone who she needed as well.
The reason I rated this book a 3.5 wasn't because of anything negative, but the book just isn't memorable to me like Luka is. I enjoyed this story enough, but not enough to reread it.
Overall, I do recommend this to my hockey-loving babes; it's a quick read with the right amount of angst and fluffy mixed.
Thank you, Torch Lit Link and Alisa Jean, for the ARC.
Matthew is the broody grump of the LA Quakes, but with good reason. His sister passed away shortly after he was traded and neither his old team or his new team supported him when it happened. He is grieving and has trust issues. Phoebe is getting her life back on track in a new city after being cheated on. Her brother’s teammate catches her attention. When Phoebe wants to irritate her bother, she flirts with Matthew and asks him to take her home. Matthew doesn’t care about his team, so when she propositions him, he accepts.
These two are fire. I love how they enjoyed each other and acted like adults. It was great watching them navigate starting to like each other and figure out what a relationship would look like knowing they both have issues. The spice was off the charts but flowed with the story. There are times when it gets a little heavy, but it was great and realistic. It was really great to watch their gloom crack and grow as individuals and together.
This was my first book by this author and I was impressed. I really enjoyed this one. I didn’t realize it was in the middle of a series. I think reading previous ones would have helped keep track of all the names and there were some comments that referenced prior books, but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything important to the story. I will definitely be going back and reading the backlog. 5/5⭐️ 5/5🌶️
Matthew by Alisa Jean completely captivated me from the very first page. The journey of the main character, a professional hockey player grappling with a deeply painful past and profound personal struggles, is depicted with such raw emotion and authenticity that I felt truly immersed in his world. His internal battles and unique coping mechanisms are incredibly compelling.
The introduction of the female lead brings a vibrant and unexpected dynamic. Her spirit, wit, and unwavering strength create a powerful counterpoint to his guarded nature. Their evolving relationship is a breathtaking blend of intense chemistry and tender moments, showcasing how two individuals can find profound healing and unexpected happiness together.
Alisa Jean masterfully crafts a narrative that seamlessly weaves together the adrenaline-fueled world of professional sports with deeply personal themes of emotional recovery and self-discovery. I was on the edge of my seat during the high-stakes games, and equally invested in the characters' personal growth and challenges. The portrayal of a competitive work environment adds another layer of intrigue, highlighting battles for recognition and integrity.
This isn't just a sports romance; it's a powerful and moving story about overcoming significant obstacles, finding resilience, and the transformative power of connection. The characters are complex, relatable, and easy to root for. I laughed, I teared up, and I was completely swept away by their journey. A definite must-read that will stay with you long after the final page!
The blurb caught my attention, teammate’s younger sister has been my catnip lately, and I requested an ARC from Hidden Gems.
This book was so good. Matthew is still grieving the loss of his younger sister, Sami, and still harbors tremendous anger towards his former hockey team’s choice to trade him knowing his sister was dying. The storyline is filled with some emotional angst as Matthew is challenged with fitting in with his new team as anew season starts. His grumpy demeanor is lightened when he meets Phoebe, the younger sister of a teammate.
The secret relationship starts off a one-time hookup to help Phoebe get over her ex-fiancé cheating with her roommate and best friend. Matthew and Phoebe strike up an unlikely friendship that develops into a secret romance with deep feelings. I loved seeing these two gradually open up to each other, and then work through some hiccups and keep growing.
I’m very interested in Phoebe’s brother Brian and his book. This is a new to me author and I intend to read more books by.
Thank you to Alisa Jean and Torch Lit for letting me read an ARC of Matthew.
Phoebe moves to LA after a break up to be close to her brother Brian who plays for the LA hockey team. Matthew, Brian’s teammate, is still reeling from his sisters death and is taking it out on everyone around him. This is a true grumpy vs sunshine romance.
I really enjoyed Phoebe and Matthew’s story. There were bumps along the way but nothing that seemed out of place or crazy. This is part of a series and I will definitely be reading more of them! I would definitely recommend for all of those hockey romance lovers out there!
I love a good hockey romance and this had it all, grumpy hockey player, a deep connection between the couple, healing, protective big brother, teammates little sister, dealing with grief. Apart from the excellent steamy bits I found the story very emotional, Matt having lost his younger sister struggles with his grief which affects him greatly, Phoebe seems to calm his anger when he’s with her, I loved how they help each other cope with the struggles they have.
Alisa Jean's "Matthew," the third installment in the Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series, offering a blend of romance, sport, and personal redemption.
The story centers on Matthew Holt, an enforcer for the L.A. Quakes, who grapples with feelings of betrayal after being traded from his longtime
Enter Phoebe Anderson, the quirky younger sister of one of Matthew's new teammates. Their first meeting was too cute, where she literally falls into his arms, this sparks a delightful and unexpected connection that challenges Matthew's hardened exterior. Phoebe’s charm and spirit provide a fresh contrast to his turmoil, and their evolving relationship just made me smile.
The emotional stakes heighten with the twist of Matthew hearing his late sister’s approval of Phoebe. The interplay of sibling dynamics introduces additional tension, can Matthew can truly embrace his budding romance with Phoebe amidst the obstacles their families present.
The author’s writing is engaging, blending humor and heart with the thrill of hockey. The pacing is steady, and the balance of sports and romance was spot on.
Ultimately, "Matthew" is a heartfelt read that explores personal growth, the desire for connection, and the power of love to heal wounds.
It’s perfect for those who enjoy sports romance mixed with emotional depth and character development.
A compelling entry in the series, it leaves us eager for more stories from the Los Angeles Quakes.
I enjoyed this read overall. The authors really know their hockey stuff! I don’t but it was still fun to read and pretend I did! I struggled connecting with Phoebe and Matt’s romance
Matthew, the third installment in Alisa Jean’s Los Angeles Quakes Hockey series, follows enforcer Matthew Holt as he navigates life after the devastating loss of his sister, Samantha. Grieving, guilt-ridden, and hardened by heartbreak, Matthew returns to the ice with a chip on his shoulder and a target on his back. But when he meets Phoebe Anderson, a sweet, klutzy marketing assistant with a past of her own, his world starts to thaw. Their passionate, complicated fling tests boundaries, including the sacred “bro code,” since Phoebe is the sister of one of Matthew’s teammates. Packed with emotion, scorching chemistry, and hockey grit, this story dives deep into grief, healing, and the jagged road back to love.
I was pulled in right from the first chapter. Alisa Jean’s writing is raw and vivid. Matthew’s voice, sarcastic, foul-mouthed, but deeply broken, felt so real I could practically hear him cursing in my ear. His visits to his sister’s grave wrecked me. I wasn’t ready for that level of emotional gut-punch, especially in a sports romance. And then there's Phoebe. She's charming and clumsy, but with just enough edge to hold her own against a man like Matthew. Their banter cracked me up. The way they fumbled (and then sprinted) into bed was spicy, but what surprised me was how tender those moments ended up being. This was about finding someone who sees past your wreckage.
The story sprints between emotional trauma, lighthearted flirtation, and steamy scenes without always giving time to breathe. Some transitions felt abrupt, especially between moments of intense grief and casual, almost comedic dialogue. And yet, I didn’t want to put it down. The supporting cast, especially the hockey boys, gave the story color and camaraderie, even if they sometimes felt like they belonged to another book. The tension between Matthew and Phoebe’s brother added great stakes, but I wished it had been explored a bit more. Still, I couldn’t help rooting for them.
Matthew is a messy, fiery, emotional rollercoaster of a romance with heart. It’s not just about two people falling in lust or love. It’s about falling apart and having the guts to let someone see the broken pieces. I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves sports romance with emotional depth, a broody alpha with a soft center, and heroines who trip in heels but still manage to land on their feet. If you like your love stories hot, hilarious, and heartbreaking all at once, this one’s for you.
5 plus Stars Alisa Jean writes a dramatic tale with Matthew
In Matthew, the reader is introduced to the titular character, Matthew, who is deep in grief with the loss of his sister. Matthew is part of the Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series, and this is volume three. I am a big fan of Alisa Jean and read whatever this author writes. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. I have to admit that this seems to be my favorite story of the series. It's the world of Hockey, and I am not familiar with all the ins and outs of it, but I do know some things about the sports, and Alisa Jean brings the reader into that world. Grief and anger are two things that can really fuel someone's fire, and Matthew has this fire to burn, as the enforcer of the team. Enter Phoebe, who is trying to start a new life after a major break up with her ex-fiancé. Phoebe is also a sister of one of the players on the team. The way the story comes together, feels like happenstance, and not forced. It's one of those stories that build up, and you aren't disappointed when it comes to fruition. There is tension and chemistry that jumps off the pages, not just between potential love interests, but the team as a whole. This story is a definite attention grabber, so much I couldn't put it down. It has a gripping and incredible storyline, making you want to read it again. If I could, I'd give it 5 plus stars. Matthew A Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.
Reeling from the grief of his sister’s death, Matthew takes his anger out on the ice. He’s got more minutes in the sin bin than anyone. When he hooks up with Phoebe, the little sister of one of his teammates, all bets are off. She makes him feel things he’s never felt before. Sneaking around takes its toll but what else can Matthew do? Can what he feels for Phoebe give him the courage to confess his love to the world?
Matthew is book three in this hockey romance series, and I have to admit, it’s my favorite so far. There’s so much emotion, tension, and chemistry in this romance. I couldn’t stop reading. Alisa Jean writes the ins and outs of hockey better than anyone. The descriptive narration propels the story and lays the foundation for the relationship between Matthew and Phoebe. It’s these two characters which make Matthew an unforgettable read.
Matthew is the grumpy, always angry, hero. He’s pissed off about everything, hiding the grief he’s burdening on his shoulders. He’s suffering and can’t seem to do anything without thinking about his sister. When he meets Phoebe, there’s something about her. She’s a total klutz but it’s endearing. She’s also perceptive. She can see the parts he hides from everyone else.
Even if you don’t read sports romance, you’ll fall in love with Matthew. The emotions will pull you into the story. The journey of healing will uplift your spirit while reading. The romance is very realistic. Don’t take my word for it, read Matthew for yourself.
My fave part of this story was Matthew and his sister. The amount of love and grief that was there was …ugh 😢. I loved that he still kept a piece of her with him, and how bittersweet it was too let it go. I also love how Phoebe didn’t push him, or make him feel any kind of way about it. How she knew that he needed acceptance and understanding and she gave it without hesitation. I loved the healing parts of this story, with Matthew, and his teammates and also with his family.
I really liked how Phoebe pushed him to be better. How she helped him to see the light through the dark. How she guided him to open up more and to let other people in. I loved how he felt comfortable enough to share his art and to let that part of himself shine with her.
Phoebe was interesting. I liked her, but I didn’t love her. For me, she came off a bit pushy in the beginning, and I know it was more so to piss off her brother, but it was also kind of using Matt in a way and putting him in a weird place with his colleague. I also thought the “klutzy” thing was a bit over used. I’m clumsy myself, but …. I did really love her passion for her work, and one of my fave parts was when she would rattle off hockey stats!! Go girl!!! I also loved how she stood up for herself at work, and how she made it more about “stopping the cycle” more than simply about her own job.
Overall, really good hockey romance with a slice of forbidden, teammates sister element 😏.
Grumpy sunshine Teammates sister Secret relationship Healing Dealing with grief
After reading Luka's story, I was eager to read Matthew, this was yet another story from this series that pulled emotions from me throughout. I enjoyed seeing Matt's growth in this, his reasons for how he'd been were understandable considering what had happened to him, he had been through so much, some by his own doing and a lot by others, it was nice that some of those people eventually could see their part in everything. I wanted to hug him so much reading this, but he didn't need me when he had Phoebe, the two of them went together so well, not just physically, they could talk about lots of things, they supported and encouraged one another, faced the good and the bad together, and learnt to accept a little help and support from those around them.
I believed in their connection and chemistry, I liked seeing their relationship evolve, and the impact that had on them individually. I thought Phoebe was a great character, she was such a mixture, just what what Matt needed, they were stronger together and I liked that their connection stayed strong, even through the tough times. I really enjoyed seeing these two come together and I liked that I got to revisit some things that had happened during Luka's book. I am enjoying this series and am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.
This is the third book in the series by Alisa Jean and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have read all three books and can say this one might be my top or a close second to Lincoln the first book in the series. I would recommend all three in general if you like a good hockey romance. I love the team dynamic you get in the all the books. This book does run slightly parallel to the second book but can be read as a standalone. It has your found family, teammates sister, grumpy/sunshine tropes to it.
Matt is the new defense/enforcer for the Quakes hockey team and he does his job extremely well...maybe a little too well. In fact, he has been told he needs to hit less and take his anger down a bit. While Matt has a reason for his anger and overall grumpiness, the team does not know that and really doesn't like him all that much. Enter Phoebe, his teammates sister who is an utter klutz but sunshine personified. When Matt saves her from falling off a couch, all bets are lost. He is utterly smitten with her even though he has no idea how to keep her. This book is a fun journey of watching the grump fight his feelings and win the girl all while dealing with team dynamics and issues from his past.
It is impossible not to fall in love with Matt in this book and Phoebe is perfect for him. Overall an excellent read and very enjoyable.
This is book three in the Los Angeles Quakes series. Matthew is the “bad boy” on the team. He is dealing with grieving heavily for his baby sister. His team traded him at the worst time, and he is processing guilt about what he missed. His goal is to make his former team pay every time he has to play them.
Phoebe is the sister of Brian. He’s one of Matthew’s teammates. She’s dealing with changes in her life after the betrayal of her boyfriend. She’s moving on her own and starting a new job. Her goal is getting her her own place and also getting under her brother’s skin.
What I loved about this story is that the grief that Matthew was feeling for his sister was definitely relatable. He would constantly have conversations with her in his head as he made decisions. That’s something that I found myself doing with one of my family members that I’ve lost. Phoebe made her way into his life, and she helped him change his ways. She had his grumpy behind opening up more. I will say I resonated more with Matthew in this one, but it was still a good read.
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink and the author for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What if the only person that might make you feel whole again is the only person you aren’t supposed to touch?
Matthew is a great read and one you don’t want to miss. If you don’t typically read sport related romances, I would still highly suggest reading this one. Jean brings a story of trauma, healing, and love that will keep you locked in.
Matthew and Phoebe’s story was fun, heartbreaking, and sweet all in one, and you never get just one of those feelings at the same time. From the heartbreak of loss and healing to the fun banter and the sweet slide of falling in love, Matthew and Phoebe have been my favorite couple in this series so far.
If you haven’t read Lincoln or Luka yet, you should catch up on those two prior to reading Matthew and Phoebe’s story to get the full picture of what is happening. You’ll still love Matthew and Phoebe whether you read the first two books of the series or not, but I loved having the full picture going into this one, and I think that made me love it and them more.
I loved getting to experience Matthew and Phoebe’s fun and sometimes quirky slide into love, and I think you will, too!
Matthew is everything I love in a hockey romance. It's witty, intense, emotional, and just the right amount of swoony. Matt is the classic grump with layers, and wow, does he have layers. From the outside, he’s the team’s enforcer- angry, guarded, and more than a little broken. But the more we learn about his grief and the weight he’s carrying after the loss of his sister, the more you realize how hurt he is. His inner dialogue, especially the way he still talks to his sister, absolutely wrecked me.
Then comes Phoebe. She's his teammate’s little sister and walking chaos. She’s sassy, and somehow manages to trip over air, but that only added to adoring her as a character. I loved that she wasn’t trying to “fix” Matt. She just saw him. And that kind of support is exactly what he needed. Their chemistry was hot, but it was the emotional build-up that really got me.
This book hit on all the tropes I love: secret relationship, teammates’ sister, found family, and slow but deep healing. There’s plenty of spice and banter, but it never overshadows the heart of the story. If you’re into sports romance with substance, grief representation done well, and characters who make you feel something, Matthew is absolutely worth the read.
Matthew is still grieving and is grumpy and taking it out on everyone in life and at work. He isn’t letting anyone in. He was betrayed by his old team and is having a hard time letting the new team and anyone else in.
Phoebe is getting over an ex who cheated on her. She is strong, independent, beautiful, and one of Matthew’s teammates younger sisters. She was starting a new job and loving it, but not necessarily the new boss who was taking advantage of her and not treating them right.
Matthew and Phoebe hit it off right away. There was an instant connection right away. At first it was an instant attraction and then a sexual attractions but the further it went they also became good friends and someone each other could depend on and started to care for. And Matthew began to find himself falling for her, letting her in, something he hadn’t done in a very long time. She became someone he really needed to heal and move on from the hurt.
It was always easy for the two of them. It was full of passion, lots of fun times, but there were also time of pain and pushing one another away. They both had to learn to trust one another and lean on each other.
🖤Hockey Romance 🖤Teammate’s Sister 🖤Grumpy x sunshine 🖤Secret Relationship 🖤Healing
Misunderstood Matthew has captured my heart. Matthew has a reputation of being a bad boy, short tempered and always fighting, but no one really knows him. He is closed off and has a hard time opening up to anyone. That is until he rescued oopsie-daisy, Phoebe, his teammate's sister from falling off a couch. Phoebe and Matthew had an instant connection towards each other and they became close friends. Phoebe has trust issues after her ex cheated on her and Matthew is still grieving over the loss of his sister. Slowly their relationship moved from friends to friends with benefits, meanwhile Matthew starts to fall for her and starts lowering his walls and confides in Phoebe. Their story is full of flirty banter, passion, deep conversations and learning to trust each other.
✨I received this book as an ARC for free in exchange for an honest review✨ Thank you Alisa Jean and Torch Lit Ink for this ARC!
NHL player Matthew has a reputation as an hockey “enforcer” and a grumpy guy. But that persona is masking a lot of grief from the loss of his younger sister and his caring personality. Phoebe is an internal optimist, despite just catching her long time boyfriend with her best friend. But she is also the sister of one of his teammates so off limits. But the more they get to know each other, romantically and otherwise, the more they know they cannot keep their relationship a secret. But when their professional lives blow up at the same time, can they be there for each other and build a real long-term relationship?
I have not read the other books in this series - I think this worked fine as a stand alone but now I want to go back and read them! I really liked the two main characters in this book and how they interacted with each other.
This is the third book in the LA Quakes Series, and I have read all of them through the Hidden Gems ARC program. This story was hinted at in the prior books and partially takes place in the same timeline as Luka’s story. Matt Holt is an angry defenseman who was traded to the LA Quakes at the worst time for his family. Because of this and much of his background, Matt is not very close to his teammates or anyone in LA. Yet, when he meets Phoebe Anderson, there is an instant connection. Since her brother is on the same team, they run in some of the same circles. Their relationship burns hot, and neither is looking for anything long-term. They both have personal and professional challenges that occasionally intersect. I recommend reading the books in order, as you will have a better understanding of their backgrounds and those of the other characters.
I love Matthew or Mattie. His story is heartbreaking but it explains so much about him from book 2 when they did speak about him. He is definitely a grumpy grump but with the help of Phoebe his character development was so good. His relationship with his sister made me think about my own little brother & how I would do anything for him. I enjoyed how there is more to him that no one knew. He definitely was an enforcer on the ice but deep down he was a big softy. And Phoebe is a girl who can’t stay on her feet literally. Never knew a person could fall so much lol. But it added to her sass. Them together made a great story. Tropes: hockey romance, secret relationship, teammates sister, healing, banter, found family, spice. Definitely worth the wait. Can’t wait to read book 4.
I eat up a sports romance & this was no different. Matt was a character who captured me in Luka and I needed to know more. Our poor broken bad boy is so misunderstood but that all changes when he meets Phoebe. She really brought him out of his shell and helped him handle the grief he’s been holding onto. Did he do some stupid things in the beginning? Yes. But he just wanted to be a better man for Phoebe. I loved seeing what a bad ass she was in the work force & stood by what she believed no matter how difficult it is. If you’re a lover of hockey, friends to lovers, and found family troupe then this is the read for you!
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink for the opportunity to read and review this arc!
I loved Matthew, and his development was amazing! However, I felt like Pheobe was a little flat. The whole clumsy thing was overplayed, and she just didn't vibe for me. I received a free copy and was very disappointed to find out that their chemistry was bland at best. However, I did find Luka's story interesting, so I might just go back and read that one. Also, this may be because I started reading in the middle of the series, but, honestly, it was a bit too hard for me to keep track of the characters, especially the teammates. There was a list given in the end, but I would have appreciated it more if it had been given in the beginning instead.
Thanks to TorchLitInk and Author Alisa Jean for the ARC!
Matthew surprised me. Beneath the tough, brooding exterior is a man completely unraveled by grief, and Alisa Jean does a great job exploring that. His connection to his late sister was emotional and deeply moving. Enter Phoebe, she's smart, assertive, and unexpectedly perfect for him. Their chemistry is electric, but what hooked me was the emotional safety they created for one another.
This is a great mix of forbidden romance (teammate’s sister!), emotional healing, and spicy moments that don’t overshadow the heart of the story. Phoebe’s character brought balance, and I appreciated her drive and resilience, even if she was a little too impulsive at first.
While it didn’t hit quite as hard as Luka for me, Matthew is still a standout in the series. It’s an engaging, emotional read that hockey romance fans will absolutely devour. Looking forward to book four!
