She thinks he’s a thief breaking into her house at Christmastime. It turns out, he might just steal her heart.
My plan, along with my fellow Outside the Bubble club members, was to surprise a woman in town by putting up her Christmas lights. But when she comes home unexpectedly early and catches me climbing a ladder to her roof, she assumes I’m the Grinch, coming to steal Christmas. Her dog gets in on the action, too, and before I know it, me, her, and the dog are on the ground in a tangle of holiday lights.
I find out that her name is Annette, that she’s an organized, driven executive with two grown kids, and that I feel a pull toward her unlike anything I’ve experienced.
Even though I’ve spent a lifetime staying away from relationships, sparks start to fly like fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and I learn that love can sneak right up on you like a spy on a midnight mission.
She can tell I’m keeping things about myself hidden. I was an intelligence operative in the field before her kids were even born, and I still work for the same top-secret government agency. So you could say that I’m full of secrets. She recently got divorced from her husband of twenty-seven years who hid plenty from her, so I get why she's wary. But I’ve spent my life in disguise—currently as Abraham in the office and Hammy everywhere else— and I’m not sure if I can show the real me.
Which leaves me wondering if our budding romance will get tangled up in more than just holiday lights.
Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is a festive rom-com novella with seasoned characters from the world of Romancing the Spy. It’s packed with heart, humor, a little adventure, and plenty of cocoa-flavored Christmas cheer.

Meg Easton is the USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romances and romantic comedies with fun, memorable, swoon-worthy characters, and settings you’ll want to pack up and move to. She lives at the foot of a mountain with her name on it (or at least one letter of her name) in Utah. She loves gardening, bike riding, baking, swimming before the sun rises, and spending time with her husband and three kids.
I came across this recently and thought it would make a cutesy holiday read. The book summary pretty much wraps up this short story. Hammy (aka Abraham) is a former field operative for a clandestine government agency. He recently retired from the field and now works a desk for the agency. Annette is a recent divorcee with trust issues especially with men who seem like they're hiding something. A couple of fun dates later and the couple are falling for each other but are hesitant about moving forward. It's a quick read and a cute holiday story. I'm looking at a solid three star read.
********************Update******************** I had the chance to listen to the audiobook of this one! Loved it so much! The story and characters were just as much fun the second time around. It was the perfect way to spend my time while wrapping gifts for Christmas! Adrienne Fleming is a narrator that I really enjoy. I've listened to many of the audiobooks that she's narrated and haven't been disappointed once with her talents! **********************************************
I loved being able to read Hammy's story! After seeing him as a secondary character in this author's Spy series, I was so excited that this was his story! And oh my, what a fun story it was! I swooned and sighed, I laughed and just loved it all! It's a shorter book than the other books in the Spy series but I was very happy with how it all tied together! And I wouldn't complain if the author ever decided to expand this one!
Annette was a delightful character and I loved her spunk. Especially during that first scene of their "meet-cute!" Hahahaha!!! I loved watching their friendship develop and them experiencing the fun spark and chemistry of a new love interest. So many fun interactions and Christmas type activities that they participated in that had me wanting to go do the same with my family. And of course, Hammy is a spy and so him trying to play that off and trying to be honest with her and dynamics of her past relationship all make it a little complicated. But I loved how it all came together.
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses and nothing further.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is part of the Christmas Kisses & Cookie Crumbs series- a multi author series of short and sweet holiday standalones. This one also takes place in the same world as the author's Romancing the Spy series, so those who have read that series will already be familiar with Hammy... but this could definitely be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.
Meg Easton's Romancing the Spy series is an absolute favorite of mine, so spending more time (no matter how brief) in that world and seeing Hammy get his happily ever after was so fun! This one didn't have a whole lot of spy action but was a fun little peek into that world still. Admittedly, later in life romances aren't always my cup of tea, but I found I really enjoyed this one very much! From the fun meet-cute, I was drawn into Hammy and Annette's sweet story. It was fun and festive and kept me smiling throughout. This is definitely a very quick read--- at under 100 pages, it can easily be read in one sitting- but felt like just the perfect bite sized holiday romance! I also love that each book in the series includes a fun recipe to try too!
Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
This was another cute book by Meg Easton. It's a novella, which is great for the busy holiday season. This is about Hammy, one of the side characters from her spy series. It's a later-in-life sweet romance, which is not my go-to trope, but it was a good story. I've always thought Meg Easton is really good at writing novellas, and this is no exception.
This book is adorable and the perfect cute quick read for anyone wanting to finish a book in one sitting. This book can easily be finished in 1 hour. 💚 I think the one downside to such a quick read is the speed at which the couple have to fall in love. It moves a little faster than I’m usually a fan of, but this book still managed to make it realistic. I love how this book shows that it’s never too late to find love or start fresh!
Main Tropes: 💚 Secret Identity 💚 Divorced FMC 💚 Christmas Time 💚 “Seasoned” Romance 💚 Found Family 💚 Happily Ever After (HEA)
If you have been reading Meg's Spies book you'll know that Abraham is a staple and I'm so glad he got a HEA! I loved that this was a later in life romance! I loved how it shows that being with the right person makes all of the difference.
If you're looking for a quick, holiday romance during a quick and busy month, week, day....this is the one you need to grab. You'll have this read in under an hour!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Triggers: mention of divorce, finding yourself, trust, romance-kisses only.
What a fun read! It was quick and easy to read but definitely packed a great story in there. Their story had such a perfect Christmas meet-cute!
Abraham and Annette were so great for each. They had such fun! It was a perfect book for Abraham to get his story. He was one of my favorite side characters in the Romancing The Spy series.
I’ve had the busiest, craziest couple of weeks ever and I’ve been dying to just sit and read Christmas books, eat Christmas candy, watch Christmas movies, and listen to Christmas music. This was the perfect book for the season–short, sweet, swoony, and a spin-off to the spy series.
Hammy is such a fantastic character and his first meet with Annette had me laughing so hard. Trying to be an elf, but accused of being a grinch, this story started off with a literal bang and the momentum kept going. It was fun to see a romance unfold between a middle aged couple. The literal hot cocoa cookies sounded so interesting, but it was the constant connection and Christmas magic that stole my heart, especially amid the secrets.
This one hit the spot!
Content: mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
The stories in this series are just right for when you want a short, sweet, clean romance imbued with Christmas atmosphere. In this installment, Abraham and Annette, our 50+ protagonists, engage in festive fun, experience the joy of family, and embark on their happily ever after.
This book was more so 2.5. Not bad, per say, but not one I would recommend either.
I listened to this book on audio and found the narrators voice to be ...percussive? Over headphones all consonants just sounded very scratchy and overdone that it took me out of the story.
The plot itself had the potential to be good but it was just very rushed. One second they are meeting, the next they are in an "epic love". I get it was meant to be a cute, simple novella but the character arcs and relationship could have been ironed out more and elaborated upon.
Also what kind of name is hammy 🤣 I ain't falling for that. And naming the chapters felt juvenile maybe? They took me out of the moments when I was listening.
A fun new Christmas story full of yummy things. I enjoyed reading about older romances and all the thoughts of love at an older age. The story was entertaining, with all the “spy” stuff running through it. The characters were relatable and easy to connect with. The author created a story that had adventure, holiday cheer, and endearing pictures of community, love, and acceptance. Meg Easton writes stories that are clean reads, have sweet moments, and have fun banter. I recommend you pick this book up as a cute read before the Christmas holiday business takes over.
This was a super quick read-- it only took me about an hour. This tells a later-in-life love story featuring Hammy from the Romancing the Spy series! When I heard that, I knew I wanted to read this one.
It's cute! If you like the Romancing the Spy series, you'll enjoy this one too.
Hammy works for a private spy agency and is a master at disguise. While on a secret mission to do a good deed (hanging Christmas lights) he meets a co-workers mother. A fun premise and the result is a sweet and fun book of spies, secrets, and finding love later in life. Fun addition to the original spy series!
This later in life short rom com really hit the spot for me. The heroine and hero had an interesting dynamic and I liked how they interacted with each other. A sweet Christmas read that I recommend!
3.5 okay, super cute actually! This one is a couple in their 50s finding love and I was here for it. These sweet little novellas are giving me way more Christmas vibes than the dirty amazon ones. 🤷♀️
We know Hammy from previous books by @ spy series. This is little story is another reason why I adore him. He awkwardly meets Annette while trying to put up her Christmas lights. I always love a story about a slightly older couple. Hammy is just so lovable and I can’t get enough of the Lancaster Family. You can also listen to the audio on YouTube! Loved it!
This is the best Christmas fun novella ever! There are characters from Meg’s popular Romancing the Spy series. Thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommend. I received an ARC from the author. I am writing a voluntary, honest review.
~She thinks he’s a thief breaking into her house at Christmastime. It turns out, he might just steal her heart…
“I’m not here to steal Christmas. I’m here to...bring Christmas cheer.”
-HOLIDAY LIGHTS & Cocoa Cookie Nights, is a delightful, festive rom-com novella with seasoned characters from the world of Romancing the Spy. It’s deliciously filled with heart, humor, a little adventure, and plenty of cocoa-flavored Christmas cheer, to warm your heart, and have you smiling along the way. This is definitely a very quick read— at under 100 pages, but don’t let that turn you away from such sweetness and fun within! Sparks definitely fly in this story in all the best ways! Watching an older ish couple show that romance is possible later in life was lovely! Plus, there’s a delicious cookie recipe at the end of this cute story to enjoy as well! This is a packed holiday romance, worth the read! 🙌🏻📚🎄
“I’ve never known anyone as incredible as you. I’ve never been captivated the way you’ve captivated me. I’ve never wanted someone to see the real me before you came along.”
I'm glad it was a quick read, so I pushed through and finished in one sitting. The storyline is so boring, this did not hold my attention at all. I found it cheesy, and fake.

Memorable Quotes: Before I can open my mouth to explain, she’s almost to me, fists on her hips, eyes narrowed like I’m a thief in the night, and says, “Why are you climbing to my roof?” Her puppy, sensing either tension or excitement, seems determined to join the action and races forward, yanking the leash from the woman’s hand. It’s not a big dog but it’s an enthusiastic one, and it’s headed straight for my ladder. The string of lights I’ve just started putting up is wrapped once around my arm so the weight of the part still coiled on the snow below won’t pull the other end from the two clips I’ve already secured it in. I attempt to get free of the lights so I can better respond to the threat to remaining in my precarious position that’s coming at me in the form of a black-and-white powerhouse fur ball, but the puppy pounces into my ladder too quickly. Before I know it, my ladder is wobbling, the woman is yelling, “Spark, no,” and the dog is grabbing the string of lights, which pulls my arm and makes me completely lose my balance. I fall onto the shrubs below that cushion me a bit before I tumble off them and onto the snow, right on top of the Christmas lights, the fall knocking the air out of me. The other end of the lights breaks free from the two clips at the edge of the roof, and the string trails behind, landing on top of me. Okay, falling from ten feet up a ladder as a fifty-four-year-old is definitely different from falling as a twenty-something. The woman shrieks as the puppy dives into the mess of lights, dancing all over me and the lights. It barks like it caught a fugitive. I’m on my back in the snow and tangled in the lights, the Boston Terrier is now tangled in the lights, and the woman—who must feel the need to either stop the Grinch here to steal Christmas or join the fray to save her dog—has slipped onto her rear and is also tangled in the lights. I push up onto my elbows. The woman and I are trying to get free from the strings of lights but the puppy is soaking in every bit of fun from this game of lights-and-new-people, and the only thing we’re accomplishing is to make the lights tighten around us. The leash that’s tangled in the mix isn’t helping, either. The dog must decide that “new people to play with” is the better part of the game, and it gets right on top of my chest to lick my entire face. The woman is searching her coat pockets. “Where’s my phone? I’m calling the police.” I’m trying to lift the pup off me long enough to sit and get free of the lights, but it keeps jumping back onto me like I’m the best part of this new game. The woman stops trying to find her phone and says, “Hey, Siri. Call nine-one-one on speaker.” Then she says to her dog, “Spark! Stop. Licking. The. Burglar!” “I’m not a burglar!” I say as a muffled-in-a-coat-pocket voice says, “Nine-one-one, what’s your emergency?” Hearing the operator’s voice helps the woman find her phone and she pulls it from a pocket. “I’m trapped in front of my house with a burglar! Send help quickly!” She tries to pull the puppy off me but the strands of lights hold her back. She gives the 9-1-1 operator her address, the dispatcher says they have an officer nearby, and then the woman narrows her eyes at me. “Nice try, but just saying you aren’t a burglar isn’t getting you out of this. I wasn’t born yesterday.” I can tell she’s got a good amount of adrenaline coursing through her by her dilated pupils, fast breathing, and tense muscles. So I say, “I’m not the Grinch,” in a calm voice, hoping a different tone and phrasing will work better—a trick I learned in the field. “I’m Santa’s elf.”
Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is Meg Easton’s newest Christmas novella and the second book in the Christmas Kisses and Cookie Crumbs series. It is a sweet Christmas romantic comedy which contains no sex scenes or profanity. The Christmas Kisses and Cookie Crumbs series is a collection of 12 stand-alone short and sweet romcoms that are written by different authors. While Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights contains cameos from characters in her Romancing the Spy series, it can absolutely be read and enjoyed as a standalone. 54-year-old Abraham was a field intelligence operative for many years, and still works for the same top-secret government agency. Because of his career, he never married or had children. He acts as an honorary uncle to his close friends’ children. He’s still concerned about former enemies discovering his true identity, so he wears a disguise outside of work that makes him appear bald and in his 60s. Through his honorary niece, he meets the lovely 52-year-old Annette, a career driven divorcee who is the mother to two young adults and a mischievous Boston Terrier, Spark. Abraham decides to perform a random act of kindness and is encouraged to install Christmas lights on Annette’s house while she is away on a business trip. When she returns home unexpectedly early and catches him climbing a ladder to her roof, she suspects he is a thief. When she accosts Abraham, her dog, Spark, dislodges the ladder and all three of them get tangled up in Christmas lights. Once they figure out that Abe/Hammy is trying to do a good deed, Annette invites him inside for some hot cocoa and Christmas cookies. They quickly bond but Annette can tell that Abraham is hiding something. Abe doesn’t know how to reveal his true identity and full-headed younger appearance to the suspicious Annette. Meanwhile, he takes her on some small adventures to encourage her to revisit her fun side.
Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is a super-sweet Christmas novella that features older, successful main characters. It feels like a Hallmark Christmas movie, with the vivid descriptions. While the reader knows that Abraham and Annette will find their happy ending, they are kept in suspense as to when and how Abraham’s identity will be revealed to Annette. Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights is a fun and quick Christmas read!
I received an advance review copy (ARC) from the author for free and also purchased a published copy from Amazon, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
– this is part of a series but meant to be read as a stand-alone
– this is connected to Meg Easton’s Romancing the Spy series & the series does not have to be read to enjoy this story, but it may be more enjoyable to read at least Spies Don’t Fall for Their Asset before this short story (just to get a better idea of who Abraham/Hammy, Charlie, & Charlie’s family are to each other and their occupations)
– this is told from Hammy (Abraham) & Annette’s points of view
– it is mentioned that a character has issues with trust
– it is mentioned that a character’s parent died after their information was leaked (past event)
Review:
This is such a quick and sweet story! I love that we got a story for Abraham/Hammy to find his own happily ever after! I’ve enjoyed getting to know him in the Romancing the Spy series and how much he cares for his friend’s family members like they were his own. I loved that we got to see him with them in this story and that we got a deeper look into why Hammy likes to disguise himself outside of work.
Summary:
Hammy has been enjoying his time with the other Outside the Bubble club members as they go do things they might not normally do. For the holiday season, Hammy is assigned with two other members to help decorate one of the group’s mother’s house for the holidays since she’ll be unable to. But when Hammy is left alone at the house while the other two are collecting supplies, he finds himself in a precarious position of looking like an intruder coming to steal the homeowner’s Christmas when Annette shows up earlier than expected. After things calm down, Hammy finds that he loved the fire Annette showed in taking control of the situation and asks her on a date. He falls fast and hard for her over their outings, but wonders if he can truly have a relationship worthwhile if he’s still hiding parts of himself for the sake of his occupation…
Annette is baffled and irritated to find someone trying to break into her home upon returning. But when he finally comes down and her daughter comes at the same time as the police, Annette’s a little embarrassed to discover that she’d jumped to conclusions. Though when her would be robber’s charms sets her at ease, she finds herself agreeing to meeting with Hammy to have some fun. When he leaves that day, Annette begins to worry about the upcoming time with the man she’s possibly attracted to because of having been out of the dating game since she’d divorced from her ex. Does she still know what it takes to build a relationship? Or will her past issues rise up and make it impossible?
This is the 2nd book to release in the 12 book multi-author series. All short & sweet novellas, stand-alone & can be read in any order. Each with their own cookie recipe as well!
I completely adored this later-in-life sweet romance! Novellas can be very tricky to execute packing in enough information to feel like its a complete story without being rushed, enough emotion to connect to the characters, enough entertaining dialogue with fun & romantic situations to keep you interested, etc but the author nailed every bit of it! I loved everything about this one!
Hammy (Abraham) & Annette have the sweetest & most real relationship. What started out as an adrenaline filled meet cute of mistaken identity quickly morphed into something truly special. It was a light hearted, easy & enjoyable read that I didn't want to put down full of relatable emotions & all of the vulnerabilities of an older couple thinking about starting over again on the dating scene. Making each other feel young again just by being in each other's company, putting aside previous insecurities of past relationships & braving every fun loving experience they could during the holidays was the best.
The quick comebacks & ongoing secret spy conversations made me giggle. It was such a fun aspect to a story & for them to have running jokes about it while he really was one made it even more hilarious. I was just really impressed by the range of emotions that were written into such a short story. I giggled, I teared up & I completely related to these two because it reminded of me of my very own later-in-life story! 💗Add in all the childlike wonder of a Secret Santa event, a found family & spicy cookies (yep...I said SPICY COOKIES 😉) & this was a perfect little holiday treat that I would totally recommend everyone adding to their holiday lineup this year! Just a reminder: if you're reading in KU, be sure & save the recipe at the end before returning your book!
Fav: "Good luck, have fun, & don't die." 😉
This was a new to me author but I will absolutely be picking up the rest of her spy series to continue on with this theme and in this world!
Before I begin, I would like to thank Meg Easton for allowing me to read her upcoming novelette, Holiday Lights and Cocoa Cookie Nights, which is part of the multi-author series, Christmas Kisses and Cookie Crumbs, and will be available on Amazon on December 1st, 2024.
Hammy is part of the local Outside-the-Bubble club and is one of the multiple members that decides to put up someone’s Christmas lights for them. But then, the owner of the home, Annette, arrives at home unexpectedly and thinks Hammy is trying to break into her house. Somehow, he finds himself, Annette, and her dog tangled up in lights, and then Annette and him keep being drawn to each other. But Hammy has always been in a disguise of some sorts, and he’s not sure who the real him is. Can Hammy confide in Annette and have the courage to let himself pursue a relationship with the woman he likes, or will he retreat into what he’s always known?
This novelette was cute. You have Hammy, a fifty-some-year-old special agent that has long retired from being a field operative and spends his time with his friend group and the Lancaster family. You have Annette, a sweet, successful, and kind executive that is protective of her kids and sharing her heart with someone new. Spark, the dog, was adorable, and those cocoa cookies sounded tasty. I enjoyed seeing the Lancaster family again from Easton’s Romancing the Spy series, and I appreciated how both of the main characters were open to being honest with each other before starting a new romantic relationship in earnest. Overall, if you like humor, great family dynamics, cute dogs, Christmas, cookies, and a short and sweet later-in-life romance with low amounts of spice, then I would highly recommend this book. Abraham has spent his life staying away from relationships, focusing instead on his job as a intelligence operative. But when he meets Annette, who mistakes him for a thief, and they end up tangled in the ground in Christmas lights, he begins to wonder if it is finally time to take a risk and show someone his real self.
What you'll love: short story later-in-life romance dual pov beloved character hilarious meet-cute sledding sweet kisses!
This was a bite-sized Christmas treat that was the perfect length to give me all the holiday feels but short enough to read in one sitting! I don't read a lot of later-in-life romances - simply because I don't know of many - but this one was so very sweet and it always makes me happy to see someone finally find their happily ever after. The romance progressed pretty quickly but I guess when you are older and you know you have found your person, why wait around?
LOVED the meet-cute and the fun laughs along the way and of course, all of the cameos from the Lancaster family! Another sweet romance with endearing characters from one of my favorite authors! 4.5 stars
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
This was such a sweet holiday novella! Although this book is just over 60 pages the characters and the story are well written and enjoyable. I absolutely loved Hammy and Annette. This is a later in life love story.
Hammy is part of the Outside the Bubble Club and his plan was to help a local woman put her Christmas lights up for her. But when she ends up arriving home and she finds him climbing the ladder to her roof she thinks he's the Grinch, coming to teal Christmas. One thing leads to another and he is falling head over heels for Annette and he's spend a lifetime staying away from relationships.
As Annette and Hammy get closer she can tell he's hiding something. He was an intelligence operative in the field before her kids were even born, and he still work for the same top-secret government agency. So he's spent his life in a disguise currently as Abraham in the office and Hammy here. Will she be able to handle the truth? Will there love be enough? Grab this book to find out!
I had such a great time reading this novella and would definitely recommend it! There is also a delicious cookie recipe at the end of the book!
Thank you Meg Easton for allowing me to read this ARD for my honest opinion.
