A tried and true adage for first-time novelists is write what you know. Writing novels is a difficult endeavor (as W. Somerset Maugham famously quipped, “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are”) and the seasoned author controls everything they can.
According to George Yuhasz’s back-cover bio, he is a “former US Government special agent, intelligence officer, and contractor. He has also worked in the private sector as an investigator and security consultant.” It is clear he wrote about what he knows in Righteous Allegiance, which takes far-right White Christian Nationalism, especially among former members of the military, as its central subject.
Written with the technical expertise of an insider (I mentored a novelist for many years who was a former lieutenant colonel in Army intelligence, and I recognize the signs), Righteous Allegiance is topical and frightening. Yuhasz’s extremists articulate their positions well—especially the Big Bad, a Major McArdle, whose charisma is noted by more than one of the characters with whom he interacts, including a journalist and member of law enforcement. Their reasoning for their actions is important to consider, because it is how they draw others to their cause. Understanding brings us to the Complexity of the current atmosphere in the United States, which legacy and social media are designed to reduce to overly emotional dichotomies such as Us and Them without offering any insights into why such worldviews exist.
The American novel has its basis in social commentary and change. Yuhasz sits squarely in this tradition, opening up the parameters and circles of social and cultural interaction in what could have been simply an action thriller in the tradition of Tom Clancy and by the incorporation of several Indigenous characters from a broad array of tribes. Their traditions (and the echoes of Westward Expansion, Manifest Destiny, and forced relocation, for which robber barons like Morgan and Rockefeller used the US military as their personal instruments) serve to deepen the psychological aspects of Righteous Allegiance, adding in a spiritual aspect, embodied in the pervasive presence of a fox as events escalate and unfold.
I mentioned the author’s expertise in his chosen material. While it is highly detailed, Yuhasz never strays into a central rookie mistake: the narrative-dragging Info Dump. Instead, he delivers the bulk of the necessary details of the military intelligence world through the experiences of his central character, Will, who also serves as a bridge between the Indigenous and modern worlds. Will, who reminds me of the Star Wars: A New Hope version of Luke Skywalker, struggles to reconcile these worlds amid his answer of the Call to Adventure and navigation of the dangerous worlds of terrorism and geopolitical chess playing.
Yuhasz also navigates the macro and micro with a seasoned, self-assured hand. While national stakes are set, giving the novel its insistent pace (most strongly with the upcoming reelection campaign of an incumbent US president whom Aaron Sorkin could have penned), the small town in which the central action unfolds is the kind of microcosm of economically, politically, and socially diverse characters that makes Stephen King such a master of human psychology. Like King, Yuhasz shows us the often dire consequences of the ultimately petty aims and dynamic tensions inherent in small-town interactions. We encounter farmers, journalists, teachers and school administrators, national and local law enforcement, students, medical professionals, secretaries, and homemakers, all of whom are expressions of our sociopolitical landscape.
Yuhasz does not give us false hope in these tumultuous times. Losses are merged with wins and there are no storylines tidily (and unrealistically) wrapped up in a bow. As we know from events such as the Oklahoma City bombing, 9/11, and the siege at Waco, terrorism is not stopped; it is merely thwarted if all the pieces fall into place, girded by luck and timing.
All indications are that this is the first book in a series. If this is so, and I hope it is, I look forward to watching the continued Hero’s Journey on which the lead character has embarked and how the poisonous residues of the core incidents of Righteous Allegiance seep into the psychological waterways of society, macro and micro, in surprising and insidious ways.

A young man of Native American heritage is employed by a shadowy government agency in “Righteous Allegiance” by George Yuhasz. He is embedded with White Nationalists who initiate an attack on the US, seeking to establish their own homeland.

In the community of Harmony, county seat of a rural Pennsylvania borough, the radical Patriots Alliance secretly assemble to carry out their plot. The hodgepodge of ex-military members, many with a grudge against the government, is led by charismatic Elias McArdle, a former army major. On the appointed day the extremists initiate a series of violent acts that stun the nation while taking hostages and scheduling a news conference to state their demands.

But first reporter Abigail Rafferty, an expert on the White Supremacy movement, gets an exclusive interview with McArdle which delves deeply into the radicals’ agenda. Later at the news conference, he calls for federal land to be ceded to a White Supremacist government or else they plan to set off a widespread mass casualty event. The government’s efforts to stop the plot unravel and the only hope left is the undercover agent, Will Manley. Steeped in the Cherokee lore of his ancestors, Manley relies on native spiritual beliefs and mindset to stay alive in the violent faceoff that ensues between the government and the radicals.

Yuhasz has written a book that looks formulaic in the beginning but as the plot develops the story takes on some twists that leave the reader guessing. Much is due to the McArdle character who not only has an elaborate plan that leaves law enforcement playing catch up, but the militia leader is shown to be a complex individual, revealing aspects of himself that are admirable. He has a beguiling influence on both Rafferty and one of the hostages with whom McArdle has a near-violent confrontation.

Yuhasz’s prose is crisp and flows easily in the descriptions of family, relationships, ancestry, and heritage and he depicts immersive settings. Information about Native American culture, the military, and other subjects shows the author is both knowledgeable and has done proper research. The author also gives exacting details on technical aspects of the story such as military hardware and explosives. This approach lends authenticity to the narrative, adding realism and bringing the reader into the fictional world the author has painted.

A minor problem with the story is the abrupt transitions from one setting (Philadelphia) to another (town of Harmony) told through the dialogue of two different characters in disparate locations suddenly switching and indicated by nothing more than a paragraph break.

Despite minor faults, “Righteous Allegiance” is at times unpredictable, and readers will turn the pages to find out what happens. It’s at its best when staying true to its Native American motif. When very young, the hero is told by his guardian,

“In the world of humans, there is good and evil. In the natural world, good and evil do not exist. Only balance.”

The story comes full circle in “Righteous Allegiance” by George Yuhasz.

Suspense and action converge seamlessly in George Yuhasz’s gripping novel, Righteous Allegiance, a story that takes readrs on an exhilarating journey through loyalty, danger, and resilience. This novel introduces a memorable protagonist and explores profound themes that resonate deeply in today’s world.

The story centers around Will Manley, a young and highly intelligent government agent raised with spiritual values in the serene yet rugged mountains of western North Carolina. From his upbringing steeped in the love of nature and strong family bonds, Will’s character emerges as both relatable and inspiring. He is called to serve his country, navigating situations far removed from the ordinary—experiences that test his dedication, courage, and unyielding strength.

Yuhasz crafts a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. The stakes are high, the challenges intense, and the motivations of the characters intricately layered. Through Will’s eyes, readers are exposed to dangerous scenarios that stretch the limits of human perseverance and question the moral and ethical lines one must sometimes cross. Beyond the pulse-pounding action, the story’s issues and themes compel readers to reflect on societal values, personal sacrifice, and the complexity of human decisions in extraordinary circumstances.

A hallmark of Yuhasz’s writing is his vivid, cinematic style. Each page feels like a scene in a movie, with descriptions so richly detailed that the reader is effortlessly transported into Will’s world. Whether it’s the tranquil beauty of North Carolina’s wilderness or the tense atmosphere of undercover missions, Yuhasz’s prose breathes life into every setting and moment.

Adding to the depth of the narrative is the author’s evident appreciation for nature and his emphasis on enduring family values. These motifs ground the story, providing a sense of balance against the intense action and suspense. Will’s spiritual grounding, influenced by his upbringing, becomes a vital part of his character’s evolution and the overarching narrative.

The supporting cast is equally compelling, including Rebecca Hurney, a wise Lenape elder whose wisdom and kindness leave a lasting impression. Her presence adds a layer of spiritual introspection and cultural depth to the story. The enigmatic Major Elias McArdle, a former U.S. Army commander, presents an intricate antagonist with motives that challenge the protagonist’s resolve. And let’s not forget the mysterious red fox, a character whose symbolic and literal significance enriches the tale.

In Righteous Allegiance, George Yuhasz delivers a masterclass in suspense storytelling, blending action with moments of introspection and heart. The novel is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in service to a greater cause and the enduring power of values rooted in love, family, and faith.

Highly recommended for readers who appreciate fast-paced action, rich character development, and thought-provoking themes. Righteous Allegiance is a testament to Yuhasz’s storytelling prowess, and it will undoubtedly leave readers both entertained and deeply moved.

Righteous Allegiance is a captivating, intricately woven political thriller that pulses with action and features complex characters. Author George Yuhasz takes readers on a breathless ride through a meticulously crafted narrative filled with suspense shocking them with the potential cost of unwavering allegiance.

Will Manley, a young U.S. government agent, struggles to balance the traditions and ways of his Native American roots and dedication to serving his country. Skilled and easily assimilating to any environment, Will is deployed to life-threatening undercover operations. Embedded in a dangerous mission, Will is confronted head-on with the struggle of being caught between two worlds. Can he stay true to his identity while still serving and proving loyalty to his country?

Major Elias McArdle, a brilliant former U.S. Army commander, is the enigmatic mastermind orchestrating an insidious plan to destabilize the U.S. government. Under his command, a group of collaborators carry out an assault that will terrorize a peaceful community. Charismatic and intelligent, readers will be drawn to his conviction for a cause so deep-rooted that he is willing to sacrifice the very system he once served.

Rebecca Hurney, a wise and kind Lenape elder. Her wisdom and hope serve as a potential source of healing not just for the ones she loves in her community but for a fractured nation on the brink of turmoil.

A mysterious red fox adds a layer of mysticism, intrigue, and symbolism. His presence suggests that we are all connected through nature and spirituality, but his significance leaves readers questioning whether he is merely a symbolic figure or something more meaningful.

Yuhasz expertly builds tension, allowing readers to develop an emotional connection with his characters. The exceptional plot is intellectually stimulating and layered with engaging relationships and romance. Yuhasz’s fast-paced action rises with each chapter, and the political intrigue is gripping. With its timely message about the volatility of unity in a deeply divided world, Righteous Allegiance is an exhilarating read, leaving readers with much to ponder long after the final page.

With genuine thanks to author George Yuhasz for the read of his Righteous Allegiance.

All opinions are my own.

Righteous Allegiance is a fast-paced and thought-provoking thriller that pulls readers right into the heart of political chaos and moral struggle. The story follows Will Manley, an undercover agent trying to stop a dangerous domestic terror group. As he dives deeper into his mission, he finds himself torn between his loyalty to the government and his Native American heritage. The way the author weaves Will’s inner conflict with national-level suspense makes the book more than just a spy story: it feels real, human, and emotional.

What makes this book stand out is its mix of action and depth. The political tension feels authentic, but the author doesn’t just focus on guns and missions. He explores identity, faith, and the clash between modern power and ancient wisdom. Elias McArdle, the ruthless mastermind behind the chaos, is a chilling reminder of how dangerous blind belief can be. Every move he makes raises the stakes higher and keeps you glued to the story.

Ron Shortridge, the FBI agent, adds another strong layer to the plot. His investigation and sharp instincts balance Will’s undercover journey, and together, their paths build suspense until the very end. Then there’s Rebecca Hurney, the Lenape elder, who brings a calming and spiritual presence amid all the darkness. Her guidance and the symbolic red fox add a touch of mystery and hope that makes the story richer and more meaningful.

Overall, Righteous Allegiance is gripping, emotional, and surprisingly reflective. It’s a thriller that makes you think about who we are as a society and how easily things can spiral when hate takes the lead. The writing flows smoothly, the pace never drags, and the characters stay with you long after the last page. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys thrillers with purpose and heart.

The book starts off by introducing us to Will Manley, an orphaned kid, strongly attuned to his native american heritage. We grow to like this young man as he slowly orients himself toward becoming a government agent. George Yuhasz adroidly presents Will's crisp learning curve and his early missions. And you can see that the author's own career graph as a special agent and intelligence officer has supplied him with all the right background to write this book. As we anticipate more adventures from Will, he disappears and we are introduced to a host of other characters in a town called Harmony. What happened to Will I wondered for a long time?

When Harmony is threatened by a group lead by a powerful leader Major Elias McArdle, former U.S. Army commander, a mysterious and inscrutable mastermind of an enterprising plan a whole lot starts happening. The Major's plan affects the whole country if he succeeds. It is for the reader to figure out what is Will's role as the drama evolves. Will he be able to save the day?

This book has been meticulously and factually researched. But at the same time it is full of action and suspense. I would call it realistic imagining because one can truly imagine such situations arising in the world today. While being focused on the action and the facts George Yuhasz has also intuitively built an emotional connect with his characters. All in all - a superb 5 star read.

The writing is solid in Righteous Allegiance and author George Yuhasz has a compelling narrative inside the pages of this book. He would have had a sturdier story had he relied solely on his background by embellishing upon it to design additional, dangerous scenarios for the main character.

There are many subplots with an abundance of characters, but more importantly is that the main character Will, integral to the story and plot, appears strongest in chapters 5 and 6.

The author has several stories to tell and perhaps this book could have been carefully crafted into a trilogy because of this.

Yuhasz is serious about the political thriller genre and pulls off something that Cormac McCarthy does—he uses Spanish without translating it in important scenes. I very much admire that writing technique and he pulls it off well.

The author provides the reader with many characterizations and is proof positive that he has the wherewithal to produce powerful fiction. I would happily read any future writing project Yuhasz publishes.

Righteous Allegiance by George Yuhasz deserves a space on a shelf with books from Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, John Grisham, and many other top thriller writers. The story is well written and researched, characters were well developed, and the pace kept my attention throughout the book. The story unfolds around a young orphan boy, Will, who is raised by a single woman and an itinerant border, the reader learns the boy is intelligent and hard working as well as committed to his Native American heritage and practices. When Will goes to college, in Washington D.C., his work ethic at school along with the classes he is taking is noted by several U.S. agencies and Will is groomed for a future as a U.S. operative. The book follows Will on his first two missions. As the story progresses, the outcome isn’t always obvious and, in some cases, surprises keeping the readers engaged. Mr. Yuhasz is an author that deserves more attention from readers as well as publishers. I sincerely hope Righteous Allegiance one day becomes a movie.

Righteous Allegiance is a masterfully woven thriller that simmers with suspense while probing the deepest layers of identity and ancestral wisdom.

As Will Manley, a young man imbued with profound spiritual values, navigates the treacherous world of domestic extremism, readers are drawn into a chillingly plausible web of radicalism and political manipulation. I was particularly struck by the thoughtful portrayal of Native American philosophy – Cherokee through Will Manley, and Lenape through Rebecca Hurney and the enigmatic red fox. These elements bring a transcendent depth that balances the gritty realism of the plot.

Tension gradually escalates throughout this novel, leading to a climax that is both riveting and intellectually stimulating. I found it to be an intensely engaging book that grips the reader and invites reflection on the ideological fault lines shaping America’s present and future.

Yuhasz’s writing is both engaging and thought-provoking, offering nuanced characters that reflect the struggles of making righteous choices amidst adversity. The backdrop of socio-political turmoil adds depth to the storyline, making it a relevant read for anyone interested in the intersections of personal integrity and societal expectations. George Yuhasz brings a rare level of authenticity to his writing. With a career spanning U.S. government service, intelligence work, and private-sector security, his experience clearly informs the tension, realism, and moral complexity in his storytelling especially in Righteous Allegiance, which feels grounded, urgent, and credible rather than exaggerated.
What stands out most is his range. It’s not common to see an author move convincingly from a pulse-pounding thriller to a gentle, uplifting children’s book like Imagine That: The Magic of the Mysterious Lights. Both reflect thoughtful intent whether provoking reflection or inspiring imagination. His numerous international awards feel well earned, and his work shows a clear commitment to meaningful storytelling rather than just entertainment.

A Must Read for These Divisive Times

Brilliant award-winning author George Yuhasz has again delighted his fans with his remarkable story-telling ability. Although RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE is a work of fiction, the writing skill of George Yuhasz immediately captures our attention and gives life to the characters, the setting, and the multi-layered plot. We quickly become emotionally invested due to the reality and drama of this amazingly timely story. Will the plot to divide our country and leave us vulnerable be stopped in time?

The research is flawless. The plot is gripping. The story necessitates a sequel. And the time is ripe for RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE to be made into a movie!

I don't often find a well-built action story with deep characters and lots of texture in the settings and action. The author has pulled it off quite well.
The story is very timely as White separatists or nationalists are in the news cycle more frequently and nearly always in a negative way. I feel some of their pain but I don't agree with their methods.
If you are looking solely for a fast-paced action thriller, this book won't fill the bill. If you have never read a story like this then give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised by the difference.
I am committed to no spoilers so I won't say more. Because I am picky about certain things, I award this book 4.7 stars.

The author has created a thought-provoking political thriller. This book moves at a fast pace and the story held my interest from beginning to end. The characters are relatable, complex and at times inspiring.
This is a timely book with an important reminder to us of the sacrifices that others have made, and the scars they carry both physically and mentally for the greater cause of their country. The story gently reminds us about the importance of values rooted in family, faith and love. I would recommend this entertaining and yet serious read.

Without a doubt, Author Yuhasz rivals Tom Clancy. I said it as I read through it, that it read like a Clancy novel and for those who enjoy the intrigue, here it is! I was absolutely amazed at the amount of research and knowledge that must have gone into this book, let alone the time spent crafting it. I am in awe of this author and wish him many wonderful days of writing in the future. No spoilers from me dear readers, but you won't be disappointed!

I liked the author’s descriptions very much. I liked his inclusion of political dangers and challenges in these trying times. I liked the inclusion of Native American view points. It was hard to follow so many characters. I am not a suspense reader and found it confusing to follow the story line especially as it jumped around right in the middle of a chapter.
